(NC) Spring is the time to lighten up, and there’s no better way to get ready for the season than with a fresh coat of paint in your home. An abundance of inspiring hues are in full bloom right now and Sha-ron Grech, the colour and design expert at Benjamin Moore, shares her favourite colour palette picks, as follows:

All about blue: It is the colour of sea and sky, and it’s a top choice for paint and accessories this year. In fact, Benjamin Moore named Breath of Fresh Air, a light, ethereal blue, its 2014 Colour of the Year. Breath of Fresh Air accompanies a palette of 23 Trend Colours that both stand on their own and work in harmony, allowing the transitions of spaces and colours to flow seamlessly. “This is a direct result of the fresh colour cues and pastel trends we’ve seen throughout the home furnishing, fashion and even pop culture landscape,” says Grech. “This colour has a filtered, nostalgic air that lends itself to any room in the house and is the perfect coloured neutral. Paired

with classic grey or camel textiles and burnished metals, it feels freshly sophis-ticated. Plus, when paired with white,” she points out, “it’s simply serene.”

Pastels contin-ue to please: Soft pastel shades are a popular choice among designers and homeowners alike, as they bring

an instant sense of relaxation to any space. When choosing pastel paint colours for the home, Grech recommends Lavender Mist, espe-cially when accentuated with crisp, natural linen textiles and pops of natural greenery for a look that is fresh and inviting. For a delicate and feminine look, Peach Parfait is a sweet and soft choice – and to keep the final result from being too saccharine, pair this peachy-pink tone with a complex grey to add weight to the space.

Accessories add the perfect finishing touch: Now is the time to switch out any dark, heavy decor accents for lighter and brighter options. Warm metallic accessories like an impactful picture frame or a beautiful vase provide a welcome contrast to this refreshing spring palette. A linen throw and textured cushions help lighten the room for a fresh, inspired look.

(NC) The bathroom is one of the most highly traf cked and important rooms in the house. When it comes to installing a new bathroom it is important to establish a plan and a budget. This can be challenging as install-ing plumbing and drainage lines can be very time consuming and costly.

Here are some tips to estab-lishing a cost-effective budget without sacri cing functionality and design.

Know your DIY limits: Assess which aspects of the project you can complete yourself, and which ones you will require a professional. Over-estimating your DIY ability will be effective for the budgeting stage, however unrealistic self expectations can set you back both nancially and time wise.

Ventilation: Moisture can be your bathrooms greatest long-term foe. If your bathroom is not properly ventilated mold and

mildew can cost you a fortune down the road. If possible, include windows for natural light, and ventilation. If it is not possible to include a window, then be sure to install a ven-tilation fan, which pulls air out and allows fresh air to draw back in. The size of the ventila-tion fan is dependent on the size of your bathroom.

Macerating toilet systems: Known as the new generation of plumbing, macerating toilet systems are a fast, cost-effective, and eco-friendly op-tion for bathroom in-stallations and renova-tions. With macerating systems, the water is routed through the toilet into a macerator where a rotating blade reduces waste and

toilet paper, so it can be pumped through ¾ inch pumping to the nearest drain line. This allows drain lines to run without opening up walls and oors. The system

not only saves you money on conventional plumbing costs, but it uses approximately 38 per cent less water per ush.

Tips for installing a co$t-effective bathroom

Smelly fi replace? After a long season of use, replaces need to be cleaned. Many homeowners

think this is a job that can be put off until the fall, but spring is an ideal season to have the chimney and ue cleaned and inspected. One reason to include scrubbing the chimney as part of spring cleaning is to cut down on odor. After using a replace, a buildup of creosote forms in the chimney. As the weather gets warmer, creosote deposits can start to smell sour and that odor will seep into the home. In addition, moisture can mix with the creosote and start to degrade the ue liner, necessitating costly repairs. The sooner a chimney and ue are cleaned the better. A chimney sweep can do a thorough job of scrubbing down the chimney and replace and ensuring that everything will be in working order come next season.

Home projects perfect forThe rejuvenating spirit of spring makes this beloved season an ideal time

for homeowners to take stock of their homes and properties and address any issues that arose during the winter.

While some projects are best left to the professionals, others can be tack-led even by those homeowners with little or no DIY experience. The following are a handful of projects tailor-made for spring.

Inspect the GuttersGutters tend to bear the brunt of harsh winter weather, and come spring

gutters are in need of inspection if not repair. Winter winds, snow and heavy rainfall can compromise the effectiveness of gutters, which can easily ac-cumulate debris and detach from homes during winter storms. In addition, gutters sometimes develop leaks over the winter months. As a result, home-owners should conduct a careful inspection of their gutters come the spring,

being sure to look for leaks while clearing the gutters of debris and reat- taching gutters that might have become detached from the home. When reattaching loose gutters, make sure the downspouts are draining away from the foundation, as gutters that are not draining properly can cause damage to that foundation and possibly

lead to flooding.

Take stock of roof shingles

Much like its gutters and downspouts, a home’s roof can suffer significant damage over the course of a typical winter. Shingles may be lost to harsh winter winds and storms, so homeowners should examine the roof to determine if any shingles were lost or suffered damage that’s considerable enough to require replacement. Summer can be especially brutal on shingles, especially those that suffered significant damage during the winter. If left unchecked or unad-dressed, problems with dam-aged shingles can quickly escalate into larger issues

when spring rains and summer sun inevitably arrive, so homeowners should prioritize fixing or replacing damaged shingles as quickly as possible.

Check for freeze damageFrozen temperatures can be hard on humans and homes alike, but unlike

humans who can stay inside when temperatures dip below freezing, homes are forced to withstand the elements throughout the winter. External hose faucets are often susceptible to freeze damage. To inspect such faucets, turn the water on and then place a thumb or finger over the opening of the faucet. If your thumb or finger can completely stop the flow of water, the pipe where the water is coming from is likely damaged and will need to be replaced.

Assessing potential property damage is a rite of passage for homeowners in the spring. Though some damage is significant, oftentimes even novice DIYers can work their homes and properties back into shape in time to enjoy spring and summer.

A patch of dead grass on an otherwise lush lawn can be a frustrating eyesore for

homeowners. Whether lawn care is your passion or just something you do to maintain the value of your home, dead grass can be exasperating.

But as unsightly as dead grass can be, addressing it and restoring the dead patches can be somewhat simple. Before you can restore grass, however, you must first identify the source of the problem. Grass often dies because of urine damage, which is typically characterized by a dead spot surrounded by otherwise green grass. Grub infestation might be at fault when dead grass appears, and such an infestation often produces patches of light brown grass that are scattered throughout the lawn. It’s also possible that dead grass is a result of human error. If your lawn was overfertilized, then patches of gray-green grass may appear. Fungal disease is another common culprit behind dead grass, and such disease can manifest itself in different ways. Once you have identified why the grass is dead, which may require the help of a professional, then you can begin to treat your lawn.••• URINE DAMAGE

Urine damage is often limited to a particular area of the grass where your family pet routinely relieves itself. Once a particular patch of grass has worn down, the pet may move on to another spot. But if you quickly notice a dead spot due to urine damage, you can train the animal to urinate else-where, limiting the damage it causes.

When repairing the grass, dig a hole that’s roughly four inches deep and fill it with fresh soil until it’s level with the soil surrounding the dead patch. Then you can sprinkle seed on top of the freshly laid soil and water the spot. Grass should grow in and stay green so long as you prevent further urine damage.••• INSECT DAMAGE

Addressing dead spots caused by insect damage can be a little more complicated, and some homeowners may prefer to hire a professional. If you want to handle the problem on your own, apply pesticide to the af-fected areas so the insects behind the problem are killed. Once the insects are no more, cut the grass, raking the affected area to remove the dead grass and any additional debris. Scat-ter grass seed over the affected areas and then apply an appropriate fertilizer and water immediately. Professionals may know just the right fertilizer for your lawn, so even if you want to go it alone, visit a local lawn care center to ask for advice about addressing your particular problem.••• FERTILIZER DAMAGE

Fertilizer damage can also prove difficult to address, as applying fresh seeds too soon can kill any freshly growing seedlings. So grass that has been damaged by overfertilization must first be allowed to fully die. Once that has happened, the grass can be cut and any remaining debris or dead grass can be removed. Seed can then be scattered, and you can even add some additional soil before laying down an appropriate amount of

fertilizer and watering the lawn im-mediately. If you don’t trust yourself to use fertilizer correctly, then hire a professional to do the job for you. This will cost a little more, but you likely won’t wake up to more dead patches of grass down the road.

Dead grass can be unsightly and turn an otherwise lush lawn into a patchy eyesore. But addressing dead grass can be easy and can quickly restore a lawn to its green grandeur.

Here we are in the middle of Spring already. One of the items on the Spring to-do list is getting ready to do up hanging baskets and planters. Here are some things to consider when deciding what to do, how and when.

All hanging baskets should be started with fresh soil every year. Old used soil is often a bed for bugs and viruses. It is usually full of old roots and stems and is very dry and void of any food content. Using old soil in your hanging baskets makes it very hard to get your fresh new plants to grow properly without struggling.

In your planters and pots though, you only need

to clean the top 12” or so out and replace with new soil. In larger pots and containers you only need to use soil about 12” deep if you are just growing annuals in them. If you are growing trees and overwintering larger perennials you will need to have more soil depth.

You can place Styrofoam, bark mulch, chips or even pots you don’t use in the bottom of the planter and then fill up with good soil for planting.

Remember to use liquid feed (20-20-20) lightly 3 – 4 times a week. The more you water the more you need to fertilize. Starving plants don’t perform well. Also, clip your petunias and long trailers once a month or so to keep the flowers all along the stem instead of just at the ends.

Remember to plant sun plants with sun plants and shade with shade for easier growing conditions.

Have fun making up your beautiful baskets and planters for all season joy.

Selecting a contractor can feel like a daunting task. Sometimes a person doesn’t know where to start. Here are a few questions that can help make the process a bit easier:

• Who are the key people that will be working on the project? How long have they been with the company? What are their qualifications? Do they have trade tickets & certification?• Does the company use the same sub trades for every project? A company that has an established relationship with their sub trades provides consistency and added reliability during a project.• Do they require a contract? A contract that clarifies responsibilities and details related to the project is important for both parties.• Do they take care or permits for each element of the project?• How is billing handled? For example, do they have an hourly rate and how do they handle extras? This should all be covered in the contract.• Are all of the workers covered with WCB? Is the company is good standing with WCB? Proof of this should be provided.• Does the company carry liability insurance? How much? Proof of this should be provided.• How much of a down payment is required upon signing the contract? 10% is a reasonable amount. If a company requests more than this, it could be a sign of cash flow problems, which can escalate into bigger problems such as unfinished work.• What is the guarantee on material and workmanship?• How do you handle warranty issues & who is responsible for dealing with them?• Can the company provide references for both the company & the suppliers?• Can the company provide samples of their work?

(NC) No matter the season, your mud room is the hardest working room in your house. Whether it’s hats, gloves and boots…or cleats, shin guards and duf e bags, everyone in your family nds something to keep in the mud room. All those items can lead to clutter, so now is the time to try a few quick and easy DIY projects to add order to mud room mayhem.Space to Hang

Feel like you never have enough space to hang jackets or a place to hang laundry to dry? If you have an old straight ladder, here’s a solution. A coat of spray paint can give new life to the

ladder and provide an excellent solution for hanging items or cre-ating shelving in your mud room.

Simply sand and clean the lad-der surface and spray paint in the colour of your choice. Next, using hooks and chains suspend the ladder from your ceiling to cre-ate an instant hanging rack. For added air, spray paint the hooks and chain to match your ladder or choose a contrasting colour.Space to Call Your Own

Assigning a space for each family member to store their belongings is the start to ex-cellent organization…and the end of excuses for lost items. A canvas wardrobe organizer, the

kind used to store sweaters, can be the perfect solution to create cubbies for each person to keep smaller items neat and tidy.

Try stenciling labels along the outside of the organizer to ensure everyone knows what goes where. Whether labeling with each family member’s name or initials, school or sports activities, or simply days of the week, spray

paint works wonders on fabrics to label each compartment and ensure that you stay organized.

If there’s a mess in your mud room, a couple quick and easy DIY organization and storage projects, like the ones described above, can give you and your family order over the chaos.

You may have noticed, coconut coir (coy-er) has grown in popu-larity for both indoor and outdoor gardeners. Although it has been around for centuries, it’s recently become the growing medium of choice.

What is coco coir? It is a natural fiber extracted from the outer shell of coconut husks. Yes, those little hairy strings that seemed so insignificant actually have a myriad of benefits over peat moss. Contrary to popular belief, peat moss is an acidic substance which makes it difficult for plants growth. Coco coir on the other hand, has an ideal ph range (6-6.7) which facilitates healthy plant growth. The acidity of peat moss allows fungi and other plant-based diseas-es to grow and spread.

Coco coir is naturally free of bacteria, plant disease, fungi, weeds, and pathogens. Also, these fibers are resistant to salt solutions, which is important because of salts found in traditional fertilizers… particularly popular inorganic nutrients. The fibers resist packing deterioration, holding 22% air even when fully saturated which provides excellent aeration to the root zone. It holds 8 to 9 times its weight in water. Excess moisture simply runs through the medium and out the bottom of trays and containers.

The aerating and hydrating properties of coco coir make it a per-fect solution for every type of soil, even sandy or clay-like soil. The elimination of additional fertilizers creates the perfect environment for planting and growing indoors or outdoors.

Coco coir is a natural, renewable resource that is also com-postable and contains valuable nutrients that aid in plant growth. It’s also an effective and environmentally friendly way to achieve healthier, tastier more fragrant plants, flowers and vegetables.

It’s a fresh new world

(NC) Spring cleaning tasks are upon us, so be sure to add some cost-saving, energy-efficient measures, before turning on the air conditioner this summer.

Replace your filters – This will ensure clean air throughout your home. Clogged filters mean your air conditioner must work harder to move cool air through the house. By replacing them now, you will be ready for the heat of the summer – and this should be done every three months.

Prepare the air conditioner – Be sure to remove the winter cover and gently clean the coils of the outdoor unit with a garden hose. Make sure it’s clear of debris such as leaves and branches from the fall and winter.

Clean and rotate your ceiling fans – Make sure all the fans in your home are working properly and are dust-free. In the summer, the blades should operate in a counter-clockwise direction to move the air downwards and maximize air circulation so your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard.

Change outdoor bulbs – When replacing them, remember that an en-ergy-saving light bulb can last up to 10 times longer than a normal bulb and use up to 75 per cent less energy. You’ll save yourself some money and won’t have to worry about them burning out this summer.

Check for leaks –Examine the seals and insulation around windows and doors. Up to 30 per cent of a homes heating and cooling costs can be lost through poorly fitted windows and doors.

FRESHEN UP YOUR HOME

Fresh Furniture Trends to Watch For in 2014 From freshome.com

1. GLAMOURWe all appreciate a bit of over the top showiness every now and then, and it’s

likely we’ll be seeing it more and more over the next few years as ‘glamour’ is in, big time. Opt for opulent furniture that oozes with excess lavishness. Try to create that ‘wow’ feeling in a guests mind and let you’re extravagant side free. Glamour has been around for a long time, but it’s made the 2014 list as it’s one of the stron-ger growth trends in the furniture market.

2. CUSTOM MADE FURNITUREIndividuality is a big thing, and it seems to be something which the wealthy

feed on through expensive personal customizations and products that only they have. Customized made furniture can be extortionately expensive, but it can also be accessible and affordable enough to the average Joe. Custom doesn’t have to mean expensive as all it takes is a person who creates these pieces as a passion, who isn’t as interested in huge pro ts, but rather takes pleasure in the joy of creat-ing the piece.

3. STATEMENT DINING TABLESEnjoying a meal with friends and family is ne dining but why not make a

statement to your family and friends at the same time with a unique dining room table. Embellishing your dining room with a standout furniture piece is a trend we have seen in recent exhibitions.

This striking wooden dining table feels like it could be straight from a knight’s banqueting hall yet the light wood tones and contrasting white chairs make this a modern day statement of style and class that also shows your guests the impor-tance of environmental natural furnishings.

4. SMALL FURNITUREUncluttered rooms and open space are the theme for 2014. As apartments

and houses are generally becoming smaller in size due to housing shortages

and population explosions, the furniture within the house also has to adapt with the size of the house. This trend, in that sense is a double edged sword, where uncluttered and open meets smaller apartments and houses. Look for tight, com-pact furniture, something that’ll simply do the job, but with class of course!

5. TECHNOLOGICAL FURNITUREAs the use of smartphones and tablet computers increase in popularity this

year so will the furniture options that facilitate and enable your furniture to become one with your technology.

Look out for hidden wireless charging docks that are concealed in a bedside table, USB charging ports in a dining room cabinet or audio and video connectors linked to your TV or Hi-Fi system. This trend is also seen in devices such as sau-nas that often offer an audio auxiliary input from your smartphone.

6. MULTI-FUNCTIONAL FURNITUREWe are seeing the use of multi-functional furniture making more of a state-

ment in 2014. Is it a coffee table, storage shelf or a chair? – well it is actually all three and while its design may not be to everybody’s tastes this type of furniture is very practical in a modern minimalistic home design.

Other types of multi-functional furniture include beds that transform into work desks or chairs that conceal hidden drawers. For a smaller home this type of furni-ture is certainly something that you should consider.

7. LIGHT TONED WOODSIf you’ve read some of our other trend articles, you’ll have seen that light

toned woods are popular all around the house in 2014, therefore it’s no surprise that they’re making a triumphant statement in the furniture market. We’re seeing high quality and durable light woods such as oak making a strong statement in the market. The great thing about this trend is that it’s dif cult to go wrong, as natural is beautiful and light toned woods can be used to craft any type of furniture.

Homeowners who want their homes to make strong first impressions must prioritize curb appeal. Homes with strong curb appeal sell well and can impart a welcoming feel to all visitors. Improving curb appeal

need not be expensive, and the following are a handful of ways to improve the appearance of your home.

1. Install a bold-looking door in a vibrant color or one with a custom design. This helps the home stand out from other properties in the neighbor-hood.2. Edge the driveway to create a distinct border between the driveway and

the lawn or other landscaping features. This helps homes appear neat and well kept.3. Use outdoor lighting to make a home more inviting. Outdoor lighting also

makes properties safer to traverse at night.4. Clean a home’s exterior to remove mildew or discolorations from the

siding, driveway, patio, and other outdoor elements.5. Improve landscapes with fresh plants and seasonal color. Homeowners

without the time to plant can consider container gardens, which don’t take much time to assemble but still add appeal to a home’s exterior.6. Prune planting beds and add new mulch to restore color.7. Add shutters and accent trim to a home’s exterior to improve on the

beauty of the house.8. Install new fencing or give a fresh coat of paint or stain to an existing

fence.9. Replace concrete paths with tile or stone walkways to make entryways

more impressive and inviting.

SWAN LAKE NURSERYLAND... We’re More Than Just A Garden Centre

When designing their landscapes, homeowners may envision grandi-ose gardens and lush lawns that are the envy of the neighborhood. But such designs can be difficult to maintain, and homeowners often find they are not worth the time or money.

Avoiding such costly mistakes allows homeowners to fully enjoy their lawns. The following are a few landscaping mistakes homeowners may want to avoid so they can spend more time enjoying their landscapes and less time working around the yard.~ Planting the wrong trees and shrubs: When planting new trees and

shrubs around your property, choose varieties that won’t overwhelm the property by growing too large. Such trees and shrubs can mask other elements of a landscape, and they can also take a substantial amount

of effort to maintain. Avoid spending too much time pruning trees and shrubs by opting for those that only grow to a particular size.~ Choosing non-native plants: It’s always best to choose plants that

are native to a particular region. Native plants have already adapted to the local climate, meaning they can withstand the worst weather that climate has to offer without homeowners having to put in much effort. For example, if you live in an area where drought is common, avoid planting trees, shrubs, flowers, or grass that need ample amounts of water. Instead, opt for those varieties that can survive without significant amounts of water. Exotic plants might add aesthetic appeal to a proper-ty, but that appeal is often short-lived or costly to maintain when a plant is not in its native climate.

~ Too much lawn: While a large and lush lawn appeals to many homeowners, a yard that is all grass can be difficult and expensive to maintain. Lawns without trees are susceptible to damage from the hot summer sun, and homeowners often respond to that threat by overwa-tering their lawns. Overwatering not only weakens root systems, but it also leads to higher water bills. Homeowners can downsize their lawns by planting more trees around the property, adding a garden in the backyard or even adding landscape features to their property.~ Planting without a plan: When planting new trees around a proper-

ty, some homeowners plant without first considering the ideal locations for new trees. This can prove an expensive mistake. Planting too close to your house may eventually threaten your home’s foundation, as roots grow deeper and deeper into the ground. Planting too close to a home also may prove a security threat down the road, when the tree has grown to full height. Such trees may threaten the home during a storm, so consult a landscaping professional when planting new trees so the trees are located in a place that does not threaten the value of your home or the safety of its residents.

(NC) Staining brings out the best in a wood surface. Adding stain to a wooden surface not only aligns the colour to match a room’s décor, it also emphasizes the natural grain pattern on any wood. Staining and finishing fur-niture, picture frames, and other wood surfaces is a simple DIY project that will refresh the look of any room.

Here are some staining tips that focus on pre-staining procedures and appli-cations that will ensure the best results for your finished product:

Equipment for project:• Fine grit sandpaper • Disposable rubber gloves• Wood Finishing Cloths • Clean ragSanding: Always prepare the wood with a light

sanding. Sanding the wood surface ensures you get a nice even coat of stain when the time comes. Always sand in the direction of the grain to avoid leaving un-sightly scratches. Use a fine grit sandpaper or even a very fine grit to get a smooth down appearance. Make sure to remove all the sanding dust before moving on.

Preparation: To keep hands clean, wear gloves.Application: Using a wood finishing cloth wipe in the direction of the wood,

working the colour into the surface. After the stain has been applied, wipe the stain off immediately for a lighter tone, or for a deeper tone, leave it on 5-10 minutes before wiping off using a clean rag. Similarly to the application of the stain, make sure to wipe off any excess stain going in the direction of the grain of wood. Never allow any excess stain to dry on wood surface—it will cause all sorts of adhesion and other issues.

Evaluation: After letting the finish sit for an hour, evaluate your work. If you are satisfied do not apply any further stain. However, for an even deeper color and sheen, wait one hour, then apply a second coat, using a fresh cloth. Re-member – Stain provides colour, but not protection. Once the stain has dried,

apply a clear finish product to protect both the stain and the wood.www.newscanada.com

(NC) Canada may be known as the Great White North, but that certainly doesn’t stop Mother Nature from delivering hot, muggy weather every summer.

When you’re in the middle of a heat wave, you want to make sure your central air conditioning system is in top working order. As many of you know, it’s not pleasant to have your system break down just as the temperature edges into the 30s.

The good news is that complica-tions such as these can be avoided with some basic, regular mainte-nance, and spring is the best time to tackle this.

For starters, you can clean up around your outdoor condenser – there should be no leaves, twigs or other debris in the vicinity. Following that, with the power turned off, hose down the unit regularly to make sure it’s free of dust.

Then, check your furnace lters and clean or replace them. The air conditioner needs the furnace to circulate air, and a dirty lter will push

dust and other particles throughout the house, cutting down on ef cien-cy. It can also reduce air ow, forc-ing your HVAC equipment to work harder and leaving it vulnerable to malfunction.

Remember that it’s bene cial not to overwork your AC system. Easing up on your cooling will help prevent breakdowns and increase your equipment’s lifespan, possibly by

years. So close off vents in unused rooms or your basement, where it is naturally cooler; use ceiling fans to circulate air; and close your drapes or shades on sunny days. Also, turn off the humidi er in summer months. Leaving it on will only increase the cooling load.

Set the thermostat below the room temperature and never below 20 degrees Celsius. This can cause a

multitude of problems for your unit, including freezing up. Ideally, the thermostat should be set to 25.5°C when at home and 29°C when away.

Most importantly, call in a licensed HVAC contractor for an annual main-tenance visit. Your air conditioner is a complex piece of equipment, and not all warning signs will be obvious. The refrigerant, for instance, might be leaking – a serious and possibly hazardous problem that only a pro-fessional can detect. To ensure the contractor gets accurate readings on the gauges, make sure the outdoor temperature is 21 degrees Celsius or higher.

We all know it’s easy to turn on the switch and forget about the hard work your AC is doing for you. But proper maintenance can save you thousands of dollars in repair costs, and keep you cool on even the hot-test days.

The DO’S and DON’TS of basement finishingRemodeling a basement is a popular home improvement project. A finished

basement makes the space more functional and, when done correctly, can add a considerable amount of living space to a home.

Finishing a basement pays dividends in additional space in a home that doesn’t require the same level of investment as putting an addition on the house. Also, the groundwork for a finished room is already there, as most basements are already set up with a poured concrete floor and some walls, usually cinder blocks. Some electrical components, plumbing and the creature comforts of drywall and a more inviting floor might be all that’s necessary to finish a basement. The process can be labor-intensive, and many people prefer to leave it to a professional contrac-tor. Whatever finishing method is chosen, homeowners should follow the proper procedures when doing the work.DO start with a detailed plan. Measure out the basement and mark any items

that cannot be moved, such as a furnace, water heater or pipes. Create a design board that showcases the materials you plan to use on the project. Think about ways you plan to arrange furniture and consider all of the possible uses for the room. Will it be a home theater? Will someone be sleeping down there? Each scenario will require certain amenities and safety requirements.DON’T plan to finish the entire basement. Doing so will leave you without a

storage or utility area where you house holiday decorations, tools, luggage and similar items. DO get the scoop on building codes. Knowing what the municipality allows

in basement remodeling will help you to customize a plan that is functional, safe and legal. Plus, failure to meet building codes could mean the work that has been done must be torn out and redone. DON’T overlook adequate lighting in your refinishing plan. A basement is likely

one area of the house that has limited natural light pouring in. With traditional-ly small windows, or no windows at all, a basement needs ample lighting in its design scheme. DO take into consideration moisture issues in the basement. Many basements

are plagued by moisture issues ranging from water seepage to condensation forming on walls. These situations may vary depending on the weather throughout the year. Certain materials may need to be used to mitigate water issues before finishing can take place. The installation of water-barrier systems, drainage, sump pumps, or encapsulation products could drive up the cost of a basement renova-tion. It is essential to have a professional assess the basement water issues prior to starting any finishing work.DON’T simply cover up potential hazards, such as mold or mildew. Have them

treated instead. Otherwise, you could have a breeding ground behind drywall that could lead to unsafe conditions in the home.DON’T limit furniture choices to one type. You may need to be flexible in your

furniture choices, even selecting modular pieces, like sectionals, because entry-ways to basements may have small doorways or obstructions that make adding furniture more challenging.

Gardening is an age-old activity that was once a necessity but has transformed into a hobby for thou-sands of people. While gardening still serves practical purposes, many gardeners still consider it a hobby first and foremost.

Time-tested gardening techniques have prevailed, but there remain certain myths about gardening that are best dispelled. The following are some of the more common myths associated with gardening.

MYTH: Compost tea is more ef-fective than traditional compost. All over North America and the United Kingdom, gardeners have jumped on board the compost tea band-wagon. Compost tea is a fertilizer created by steeping compost in water mixed with sugar in brewing kits. The mixture is allowed to sit and aerate to encourage benefi-cial organism growth before it is sprayed on plants. According to supporters, compost tea suppress-

es disease and boosts plant yields. However, there is no evidence to suggest that compost tea works any better than adding compost in its normal state to the soil. In fact, leaving buckets of the “tea” around to ferment could actually create a breeding ground for E. coli and other bacteria.MYTH: Plants under stress

should be fertilized. This is not the case. Horticulturists advise that fer-tilizing plants that are not deficient in nutrients can actually add to ex-isting stress levels for plants. Plants are not often stressed by a lack of food, but rather heat or space constraints. A fed plant will use the energy to absorb the nutrients instead of defending against a blight or establishing better root systems.

MYTH: Young trees need stakes. It may be tempting to stake that little sapling to protect it against the weather and strong winds, but doing so may actually work against the foundling tree. Staking trees to inhibit swaying may not stimu-late the tree to grow thicker, lower trunks that will help the tree in the long run. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends that saplings be staked for around one year and then have the stakes removed to encourage the tree to be strong and stable on its own.MYTH: Water droplets and

sunshine lead to burnt leaves. Gardeners have been told to resist watering their plants during the hot-test times of the day. Many assume it’s because water droplets lying on leaves will magnify the sun’s

rays and burn the leaves. Watering during the hottest points of the day is not advised because water evap-orates and gets wasted.MYTH: Sand added to clay

soil makes it looser and better for plants. Clay soil is a deterrent to gardening because it can be so hard to dig and difficult to cultivate, but some feel it’s best to add sand to the clay to make it a better soil mixture. You would need a great deal of sand to do this in the right manner, but many gardeners simply dig a hole, add sand and hope for the best. However, water runoff will pool in the sand and not be absorbed by the clay, potentially causing the plants to drown.MYTH: Adding compost or

potting soil to the planting hole for

a tree or shrub is beneficial. Gar-deners frequently add compost or potting soil to the hole where the root ball of a tree or shrub will be placed. But this encourages the roots to grow only in this nutri-ent-rich area, rather than spreading throughout the landscape to form a stronger and more durable root system. If you are going to amend the soil, do so evenly across the landscape.MYTH: Use gravel or rocks in the

bottom of planting containers to im-prove drainage. Rocks and gravel can actually impede the growth of plants and take away space for roots to grow. The drainage may be affected as well, as water will sit above the gravel or stones and saturate the roots. Stick with plain soil for better drainage results.

After a long winter of snow and ice, many people are ready for the warmth and sunshine synonymous with spring. But dirty

windows can block that sunshine from finding its way into a home. Washing windows can be quite an undertaking, particularly in those homes with many windows on multiple levels. However, there are several time-saving

tips available that can cut the work considerably.

* Save window washing for a cloudy day. Otherwise, the warmth and sunlight may dry the cleaning solution too quickly and you will be left with streaks on your windows.

* Vacuum windowsills and tracks first to remove a good deal of dust and debris. This will reduce the amount of dirt you smear onto the windows while cleaning them.

* Use a combination of a sponge soaked in cleaning solution and a squeegee to get really clean windows. The squeegee helps to prevent streaks and cut down on the time it takes the windows to dry, all the while helping the windows to sparkle.

* Window screens may be the culprit behind dingy windows. Hose down the screens with water to clean them, using a mild cleaning solution if water is ineffective.

* Working with a partner can make the task go much more quickly. One person can clean the exteriors of the windows while the other does the interiors.

* A mild dishwashing liquid diluted in water can cut through dirt and grime. For stubborn dirt, wash windows with diluted ammonia or vinegar.

* Use a glass-cleaning tool to clean hard-to-reach windows. A telescoping cleaning tool and pad can make it safer to reach windows that are high up.

Garages are often targets for homeowners hoping to target clutter. Once a space reserved for cars, ga-rages are no longer strictly for vehicles, used instead to store items that simply do not t inside the home or a backyard shed.

Organizing the garage is typically a weekend or several-day project. Here’s how to turn a garage from a cluttered mess into a space suited for storing items of all shapes and sizes.

• Decide what is important to keep. Start the organization process by clear-ing out the garage and taking inventory of what you have. Items that have not been used for several years can likely be tossed. Make a pile of what will be kept and then put the rest at the curb or donate useful items to charity.

• Give thought to where you want to store particular items. Tools and items that are used more often should be stored within reach or where easily visible, while items that are not used as frequently can be stored higher up. Think about how you operate in the garage. Recycling bins can be stored closer to the door into the home, while bicycles and skates can be nearer to the garage door for easy access.

• Group like items together. Categorize items that will be kept. Garden tools, camping gear, sporting equipment, and automotive supplies should be categorized and stored in their own areas of the garage, determining if certain items can be stored inside the home to free up garage space.

• Move boxed items into clear storage containers. It’s much easier to see what you have when it is stored in clear containers.

• Invest in vertical storage systems. Moving items from the oor and putting them on shelving or behind cabinets can make the garage more organized. Hooks and bins also can be used. Employ a peg board full of hooks for oft-used tools or other items you need at the ready.

• Leave space for hobby and work areas. Garages are where many im-provement projects begin or where hobbies, such as woodworking or craft-ing, take place. Leave space for these tasks and hobbies.

• Give the space a fresh coat of paint. Some garages are dingy and dark. Bright paint on the walls and oor can open up the space and, when com-bined with more lighting, can make it lighter and brighter.

Garage organization is a common spring cleaning project. But it shouldn’t be reserved for this season alone. Periodic checks of the garage and straight-

ening up can keep a garage clean and organized throughout the entire year and make yearly spring cleaning much more manageable.

The simplest way to care for your lawn in the Spring is to spread down new grass seed throughout, to give any old lawn a fresh look. Then add a granual fertilizer. Spread fertilizer especially to an old lawn, but also to new lawn as well. This puts new nutrients in the lawn that may have been used up over the years. On my own lawn I add grass seed and fertilizer in the fall, and then again when the snow melts in the spring. The rejuvenation cycle of the earth beneath the grass has already started.

MPC maintenance could aerate your lawn. This process will cut small deep holes in the

lawn and allow the new grass seed and fertiliz-er to fall in the holes, and as well this makes a place for water to sit and better rejuvenate the dirt and water the lawn. It also helps air to get beneath the grass to grow better. Leave the dirt remainder on the lawn to break down and again fertilize the lawn.

Some clients request the lawn be cut short, this just kills the lawn as the sun has an easier chance to get down to the roots. 2 1/2 inch to 3 inch is ne. Remember not all lawn is the putting green at the golf course. That’s a whole different style of grass and process. But we all wish our lawn was that nice. If you want lawn like that in a residential backyard, you’ll have

to get the green scape (plastic lawn look alike installed).

Watering your lawn is the most important. Have irrigation installed, which saves water due to timers and keeps the lawn moist. You don’t have to get crazy with sprinkler heads, you just need enough to spray all the areas of the lawn.

Finally, rake any sand or snow piles form your lawn as soon as you can in the spring to give your lawn an early chance at getting the sun and spring rain.

For any other questions on lawn care or any services that MPC maintenance plus has to offer call, text, or email: Mike Carey (owner), or check out mpcmaintenanceplus.ca

_ Grass is de ned as any plant of the family Gramineae, a group of vas-cular plants that grow across the globe.

_ There are as many as 10,000

varieties of grass in the world. These range from grass to rice to wheat to bamboo.

_ Many grasses are annual or perennial herbs with brous roots and rhizomes.

_ Grass can withstand many differ-ent climates and has been discovered at the North Pole and at the equator.

_ Twenty percent of Earth’s vegeta-tion is comprised of grass.

_ Grasses have been transformed into paper and home decor items.

Bamboo, which is a type of grass, is frequently used for ooring because it is durable and sustainable.

_ Grass is mostly comprised of water, which makes up about 80 per-cent of grass and 90 percent of grass clippings.

_ A typical lawn will have about six grass plants per square inch. Some lawns may have millions of grass plants.☛ The average lawn releases enough

How to inspect for ROOF DAMAGEMany homeowners do not think twice about their roofs. But when leaks

develop, roof repairs and the subsequent costs of such work shed light on how important it is for homeowners to pay closer attention to the roofs over their heads.

Though certain roof issues, like shingles lost to inclement weather, are unforeseeable, many problems can be avoided with routine roof inspection. Checking roof conditions twice a year can help homeowners avoid potentially costly repair work or even more expensive roof replacement projects.

Spring is a good time to inspect roofs, which are often at the mercy of harsh conditions throughout the winter. Heavy snow, ice and biting winds can do significant damage, making spring the perfect time to assess if any such damage occurred and address any issues.c Start the inspection in the interior of the home. Before breaking out the

ladder and climbing up to the roof, inspect the home’s interior, pinpointing potential problems that may indicate roof damage. Check for stains on the ceiling which may indicate leaks that need to be addressed. Homeowners with attics should enter their attics and look for signs of water damage, making note of any damp or wet insulation. This will let you know if water has been entering the attic all winter. Pay attention to the location of any wet spots or stains so you can match them up to the exterior of the roof later on. Musty smells also may be indicative of moisture problems, even if there are

no visible leaks.c Inspect the roof out-

side. Grab a set of binocu-lars and inspect the exterior of the roof. Look at the roof flashing, including around the chimney and other areas of protruding pipes and vents. If the flashing is warped or damaged, moisture might be settling underneath. Sealant around dormers or skylights can also degrade, resulting in

leaks. Check for spalling on masonry, such as the mortar of chimneys. Po-rous areas will allow water to infiltrate.c Go directly on the roof and check. Work with a partner and carefully

climb on the roof while someone holds the ladder below. Walk on the perime-ter of the roof, looking for peeling or warped shingles, missing shingles, holes, or scrapes. If the roof is compromised in any way, it will need to be repaired. The problem will only grow more significant and repairs more expensive if damage is ignored. Sometimes a repair can be as simple as patching a leak with a new shingle and roofing cement. Popped nails can be pounded down and any curled shingles can be nailed or cemented back into place.c Consult a roofing expert. If you are unsure if your roof has made it

through the winter unscathed and would like a second opinion or if you find there is considerable damage, contact a roofing contractor. This person will offer a professional assessment of what can be repaired or if the roof should be replaced. If your roof is metal or features clay tiles, you may not have the expertise to make repairs yourself and will need to hire a professional.c Check the gutters, too. While you are up on the roof, inspect the gutters

and downspouts as well. Cracked or damage gutters will cause water to leak down the side of the home, potentially damaging the foundation. Clear any debris or leftover leaves from the gutters to ensure the rain can wash through unobstructed.

A post-winter roof inspection can protect homeowners and their families from the elements and reduce the likelihood of potentially costly repairs down the road.

Rainwater collection is a way to conserve water that can be adopted by both private homeowners and businesses. Harvesting water during peak times of precipitation ensures water will be on hand during drought or when water restrictions are implemented. Making use of rainwater reduces reliance on under-ground wells or municipal water systems. Harvesting rainwater also can help prevent flooding and soil erosion.

• Determine your roofing material. Potable water can be harvested from homes with sheet metal or slate roofing. Clay or adobe tiles also may be acceptable. Asphalt, wood shingles and tar roofs may leach toxic chemicals into the water, making it unsafe for drinking. This rainwater may only be col-lected to use for irrigation methods or washing cars and outdoor items.

• Check gutter materials. Some gutters are made with lead soldering components. A commercial lead swab test can help you determine if there is lead present in your gutters. At a later time you can choose to replace the gutters if you desire a potable supply of water.

• Invest in a collection tank or barrel. A number of manufacturers offer prefabricated rain collection systems complete with collection barrels. Oth-erwise, you can use your own barrel or tank to house the collected water. Ensure it is large enough to handle the volume of water collected.

• Purchase and install leaf guards. If your home is surrounded by many trees, you probably accumulate leaf and tree debris in your home gutters and downspouts. Leaf guards will help keep the gutters clear and increase water flow through the water collection system.

• Create a water collection area. A portion of the gutter system should be removed so that it connects to the collection barrel or tank. As the rain falls, it will run down the roof and into the gutters before it streams into the down-spouts. The downspout connected to the tank will deposit the water directly inside. Filters can be installed to help block the flow of debris.

• Outfit the tank for overflow and water usage. A spigot and hose connec-tion makes it easy to use the collected water for outdoor purposes. Many rainwater collection systems are designed with an overflow safeguard that will prevent the water from backing up through the system. It will divert the rainwater back out of the downspout when the barrel or tank is full.

A rainwater collection system harnesses a natural source of water to be used for gardens and other outdoor purposes. This water doesn’t contain chlorine or other additives, making it relatively clean and safe to use. Home-owners should check to see if a permit is necessary to install a rainwater collection system and then begin gathering water for various uses.

How to create a rain harvesting system

Rather than have rainwater flow out of downspouts to the ground, homeowners can collect that rainwater in barrels to use it as a sustainable source of water.

Planting a garden can add aes-thetic appeal and functionality to a property. Vegetable gardens can transform landscapes while putting healthy and homegrown food on the table. By growing their own fruits and vegetables, homeowners have total control over what foods can be harvested, and they can ensure sustainable, safe practices are used to care for the plants.

Vegetable gardens can be com-pact or expansive, depending on how much space is available to cultivate. However, first-time gar-deners may want to begin small so they can hone their skills and experiment to see which plants are most likely to thrive in their gardens. Expansion is always a possibility down the road.- Choose a location

Spend some time examin-ing your landscape. Vegetables generally need ample warmth and

sunlight to thrive, so find an area of the yard that gets several hours of direct sunlight per day.

A sunny spot is good, but you also want a location with adequate drainage so your garden does not succumb to flooding or fungus during and after heavy down-pours. Don’t place the garden too close to rain gutters or near a pool, where splash-out may occur. Select a location that is isolated from pets so the plants are not trampled and cats and dogs do not relieve themselves nearby.- Decide what to plant

When deciding what to plant, consider what you eat and how much produce the household con-sumes, then choose vegetables that fit with your diet. Some veg-etables, like peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, and squash, produce throughout the season. Others, such as carrots and corn, produce one crop and then expire. Plan accordingly when you purchase plants or seeds, as you want enough food but not so much that it will go to waste.

Choose three to four different vegetables and plant them in the garden. Select varieties that re-quire similar soil conditions, so that you can adjust the pH and mix of the soil accordingly. This will serve as good practice, particularly the first year of your garden. After you have mastered the basics, you can branch out into other produce.- Know when to plant

Many of the foods grown in veg-etable gardens, including tomatoes and peppers, are summer vege-

tables, which means they reach peak ripeness after the height of the summer season. Pumpkins, brussel sprouts and peas are planted to be harvested later on. These plants may be put in the ground a little later than others.

It is less expensive to start seed-lings indoors and then transplant them to a garden when the time comes. Seeds can be started three to four weeks before they would be put outdoors. Many vegetables are planted outside in

April or May, but definitely after frost conditions have waned. Read seed packets to know exactly when to plant or consult with the nursery where you purchased established seedlings.

Vegetable gardens can become central components of outdoor home landscapes. Not only do gardens add aesthetic appeal, but also they produce fresh fruits and vegetables to enjoy throughout the season.

Improve your home and diet with a vegetable garden!

Lawn and garden enthusiasts know that water, sunshine and the proper nutrients all work in concert to promote a healthy lawn. Although nutritional material is inherent in the soil, many gardeners feel soil must be amend-ed with some sort of fertilizer to give plants a healthy boost.

All-natural fertilizers are growing in popularity, and home gardeners have a variety of such products at their dis-posal. Organic fertilizers, or those that are derived from living organisms and not manufacturered through chemi-cals, can provide sufficient nutrients

and minerals to grow healthy plants.Bone meal - In order to store energy

and reach maturity, plants need phos-phate. This mineral is released over a long period of time from finely ground rock. However, a faster way to supply it to the landscape is through bone meal. Bone meal is a mixture of finely and coarsely ground animal bones that are a waste product from meat-pro-cessing plants.

Manure - The waste from herbivores (animals that feed on grass), including rabbits, horses and cows, can make super fertilizers. The best produced

manures are allowed to compost for at least nine months and are mixed with hay or straw. They should not produce an offensive odor and will provide plants with a host of nutrients.

Fish and seaweed - Fish emulsion, a mixture of ground fish and water, is a good nitrogen source. Nitrogen gives plants the energy to grow. Seaweed, which is actually a type of algae, contains the primary nutrients that plants need in order to thrive, including phosphorous, nitrogen and potassi-um. It also serves as a food for natural bacteria that break down nutrients into the soil, making them easier for plants to absorb.

Worms - Earthworms are vital to soil health. They burrow and wiggle around in the dirt, helping to aerate the soil. But the castings, or waste, of the worms also provide valuable nutri-ents to the soil. The castings contain beneficial microorganisms from the

worms’ digestive system that help break down organic matter into a form that plant roots can use. Many gar-deners participate in vermicomposting, or farming worms in order to use their castings as fertilizer.

Compost - Compost is one of the most widely used soil amendments in vegetable gardens. Yard refuse, fruit and vegetable peelings, eggshells, coffee grounds, and other items can be added to a compost pile. Natural bacteria will slowly break down these materials into a product dubbed “black gold.” Compost can be mixed into soil before planting and used as a dressing after plants have been established.

Gardeners can experiment with dif-ferent ratios of fertilizer to create a mix that enhances the soil. Test the soil to determine which, if any, nutrients the soil is lacking so the fertilizer can be adjusted accordingly.
