Member CRITIQUE
Dave Flitner is leading our critique for April 5th
Critique is held promptly at 5:30 pm to 6:45 pm prior to the General meeting. Paintings and drawings do not need to be framed. Unfinished pieces are welcome for suggestions to finish them. Those members arriving with work after 6:30 risk not having their work critiqued depending on volume of work brought in earlier. Please, only 1 painting per person.
~ Jim Garrison, Critique Master
April 5th Guest Presenter
Nicolae Sinu uses Asian Stain Painting to produce
abstract pieces with very beautiful glowing color. The process
is very calming, relaxing and unusual medium for very
contemporary work.
Nicolae was born in Long Beach, CA. He studied in Europe
and has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from France and
Industrial Design from Italy. A few years after returning from
duty in U.S. Army, he started taking Chinese art classes given
by Joan Yen at the Shemer Art Center, a retired teacher from
Scottsdale Community College and a marvelous artist who
mixes Chinese and Western art, stains and collages. He has
exhibited at the Herberger Theater, Shemer Art Center and
across the Valley of the Sun.
He has travelled to Europe and Asia on numerous occasions
and will be able to study art in China in 2011.

Thanks to Erica Cero-Wood for the very nice
brochures for the Desert Botanical Garden
paint-out, to Rita Goldner for juggling the
volunteer schedule, and to Wil Coe and John
Fontana for taking care of the tee shirts. And
welcome to Debra Jones, who will occasionally
do our critique. These are some of the people
who make it possible for our League to succeed.
Now that spring has “sprung”, take advantage
of the lovely weather and visit the tents! Many
of our members and friends are at Expo; several
of our friends are at Celebration.
You will have a grand time!

Artwork of the Month Rules
1. You must have attended 3 meetings as a
dues paid member in the last 12 calendar months.
2. A two dimensional art must be framed or on
gallery wrapped canvas must be 1 ½ “minimum.
3. If you have had your art critiqued at that meeting,
you may not also enter it in “Artwork of the Month.”
4. If you are a first, second, or third place
winner, please remain after the meeting to
be photographed for the Art Beat.
5. Each artist may win first place only
once a year (January to November).
6. All monthly first place winners will bring a piece of
artwork to the December meeting to vie for “Artist of
the Year.” Monthly winners may enter any piece of
work they wish in the December “Artist of the Year”
contest. This allows sales and gives artists the
freedom to exhibit what they feel is their best effort.
Dear SAL Members,
Everyone seemed to enjoy Red
Rohall’s presentation and eye-
catching paintings. Thanks, Red,
for an interesting and
informative talk! Particularly
appreciated was his focus on
what works for him as an artist
rather than what everyone
“should” do.

PRESENTED MARCH 19TH AT THE ARIZONA ART ALLIANCE GALLERY IN SCOTTSDALE.
Learn how to take control of your digital camera with internationally published photographer Joel Wolfson. Digital Photo
Basics in Scottsdale, AZ March 19, 2011 (9AM-5PM) For those new to digital photography. Do you love to take photos but

introduction to digital photography. You'll walk away understanding how to take your camera off full automatic and use the
controls on your camera to your creative advantage. We start with the basics and shooting out in the field to reinforce the
techniques you learn in the class. We then evaluate the photos you shot and learn the creative ways to capture the kind of
images you really want. Location: Arizona Art Alliance Gallery, 9011 E. Indian Bend, Suite E-1 in Scottsdale Pavilions. We
only accept very small groups so we can emphasize individualized instruction with a hands-on learn-by-doing approach.

Happenings!
CALL TO ARTISTS !!! A local organization will be hosting a Hot Rod Car Show at the Pavilions on the weekend of March 26. This event will be held right outside our gallery in the parking lot, and we are really looking forward to it as it is estimated to bring 1,000's of visitors
to the Pavilions Center. Do you paint cars? Do you draw cars? We are looking for artists to demo, to show, and to sell their work that weekend right out in front of the gallery, on the sidewalk! You pick the hours you want to participate!
Call the gallery at 602-870-7610, and sign up for a spot on the sidewalk.
Congratulations to Judy Delmonico-Roll for winning1st Place in Acrylic for her painting "Hand-Picked" in the Glendale Arts Council's 48th Annual Juried Fine Arts Exhibition.
March winner of Artwork of the Month at GVAL Kai with 1st place „Simply Treasures’ and 2nd place with ‘Treasures Remembered’
Both are of still life in acrylic on canvas.
A paid teaching position(s) for a drawing class & a watercolor class will become available at the end of April. Contact Washington Activity Center, 2240 W. Citrus Way, Phoenix, AZ 602-262-6971 OR http://phoenix.gov/ PRL/wac.html for further information.
Sue Hunter had paintings accepted in the Mid-Southern Watercolorists in Arkansas and a painting in the AAG Exhibit.
Whoa……Kudos to Pat Beans!! Chandler Presbyterian Church honored Pat Beans with an art exhibit and reception. We cleared out all the seats in the sanctuary and set up a "gallery". Linda Phillips, Judy Delmonico-Roll and Alan Arne also showed a few pieces. It
was a great reception. We had a good turnout. AND...get ready for this.... Pat sold ten paintings. Judy and Linda each sold one also. Then on Sunday morning in church, Pat sold another one.
And Monday morning got a commission for yet another. Was a great weekend! [Hey, we know who to go to for advice on selling now.] Congratulations, Pat!
I‟m a local artist, but not a member of a guild. I‟m moving & need to downsize. I have some very large rolls of canvas to sell & thought someone in your group may be interested. One of the rolls is 10 feet X 14 yds (42 feet) (420 sq ft). The other is 8 feet X 6 yds (18 feet) (144 sq ft). They are brand new, never were unrolled or anything. I cut 4 yds off of the larger roll, but the remaining 14 yds were never unrolled. Both have been stored inside & away from light, heat or moisture & both are in the very thick protective rolls they shipped in. Both are Fredrix acrylic white primed. The cheapest I‟ve seen the large roll was $878, & the cheapest I‟ve found the small roll was $240. I‟m asking $600 (save $278) for the large roll & $170 (save $70) for the small roll, so it would be a pretty significant discount for anyone who‟s looking to buy. If interested, please e-mail or call 623-694-3282. Thank you so much, Dana Kindred
BIG NOTE HERE: DEBRA JONES won BEST IN SHOW at the Arizona Veterinary Show AND got picked for their card! GO DEBRA GO!!!!!
