The Pennant season is now underway and unfortunately the weather isalready having an impact on the games. At this rate, there will be more rained-out games to be played at the end of the rounds, than were playedduring the rounds.

Winners take chancesLike everyone else, they fear failing,

but they refuse to let fear control them.Winners don't give up.When life gets rough,

they hang in until the going gets better.Winners are flexible.

They realise there is more than one wayand are willing to try others.

Winners know they are not perfect. They respect their weaknesses whilemaking the most of their strengths.

Winners fall but they don't stay down. They stubbornly refuse to let a fall

Winners accept responsibility for their lives.

Winners are positive thinkers who see good in all things.

From the ordinary, they make the extraordinary.

How remiss of me – in the MarchJournal I overlooked mentioning that onthe February 12, I had opened the NSWWheelchair Singles Championships whichwere played at Everglades Bowling Clubon the Central Coast. Once again I washumbled by the talent displayed bythese players who came from all over theState. Playing in this event was StateSelector, Lynn Smith, who again had awonderful tournament and won theWomen’s Singles for the second year in arow. On page 10, read of Lynn’s successin winning a Gold medal at the AustralianChampionships in Melbourne. Well done,Lynn.

Wednesday February 22, the RegionalRepresentatives met at Head Office, andit was the first opportunity to get somefeedback as regards their acceptance intheir regions. Bearing in mind it is earlydays yet and the Reps are still workingtheir way into their roles. As a result ofthe meeting, it is obvious that a lot morecan be done by the Association to guidethem on their way.

On Thursday March 1st, PatriciaCousley (Chairman of Social) accompanied me to North Ryde RSL’sColleen Renwick’s President’s Day. As myright arm was still in a plaster cast I wasnot able to bowl, and would you believe,Bennelong’s District President, SueHardacre appeared with her left arm in asling, and there we were, just like “bookends” one each side of PresidentColleen. But what a great day we had,and I must thank President Colleen andher ladies for their warmth and friendship.A big “thank you” also to Pat Cousleywho drove me to and from Hornsby station.

I have long held the idea that theAssociation needed to “touch base” withclubs in our State who have member-ships of 12 and under. These clubs fightfor survival and would have no opportunity of ever having a StateRepresentative attend a President’s Day.During the course of making arrange-ments, I had the opportunity of communicating with the CommunityDevelopment Officer, Adam McIntyre who

works out of Wagga Wagga. Adam is aLeeton man and as such has a wonderfulinsight into the needs of country clubsand I am sure that with the area’sRegional Representatives, Joan Stair andCarol Manton, in collaboration withAdam, these regions will be well serviced. I have mapped the clubs andhad intended visiting Junee Ex-Servicesand Yerong Creek in the Central Riverinaregion, and Urana, Oaklands, Rand andWalla Walla in the Riverina. Unfortunatelynature prevailed and the tour had to bepostponed due to the floods. This willnow take place after Easter when it is expected that the waters will havereceded.

Since our last issue I am pleased toannounce that CEO Heather Welch hasgraduated from the University of NSWwith a Master’s Degree in Business andTechnology. This is a particularly wonderful achievement considering thatduring the five year course, Heather married and became a mother to William. Our Association will benefit tremendouslyby her knowledge of business and thefact that she has the expertise to trulybring us into the technological age.

At the March Meeting of the Board, the appointment of the new Region 16Representative was ratified. PamelaAndrich from Asquith Bowling Club willbe a welcome addition to the Committee.

There are still vacancies on someCommittees:

Match, Selection, Coaching,Umpires and Constitution RevisionBoard.

For more information, please refer toMemo 164a dated December 15, 2011and amended January 17, 2012.

The Association is a volunteer organisation and its success dependslargely on the calibre of its people. TheCommittees will function much better ifthey are at full strength, and the workloadshared. The Association is looking forenergetic, young-minded, proactive people who will continue with the visionwe have for a progressive future.

In 2010 a National Census was initiated by Bowls Australia to helpidentify who the Bowling Club members are, what the participationis for competitive, corporate, pennant and social players, to monitor and plan the developmentof the game of bowls aroundAustralia.

This is a great source of informationfor the strategic planning in NSW forNSWWBA Inc and Australia for gamedevelopment and benchmarking for thesport of Bowls in Australia.

The 2nd National Census (2011)results have been broken down into asnap shot of each State and Territories. The results for the 2nd National Census(2011) are available on line from theBowls Australia website. (www.bowlsaustralia.com.au)

An introduction to the 2011 NationalCensus results for NSW

In NSW alone the census identified ofthe 214,836 bowls club members inNew South Wales: (note the men’s andwomen’s statistics are not separated in

the table below, however if you look atthe full report on-line they have been)

• 14.3% were registered pennantplaying members

• 23.2% were non pennant playingmembers

• 62.5% were non playing members • 66.4% of members were located in

Country New South Wales.

An introduction to the 2011 NationalCensus results for Australia

One of the main areas the census ismonitoring is the participation of Bowlsin Australia. There were 490,090 partici-pants in bowls in 2011 (in competitionsand programs of at least 4 weeks/games duration), comprising;

• 148,055 Pennant Participants• 164,337 Pennant Participants• 140,533 social and corporate

competitions/programs participants• 37,144 school participants.

Country participation outweighsmetropolitan participation (59.5% of participants were in country regions).

decreasing for about 30 years, at anincreasing rate. Throughout the 2000'sthe decrease has been 2.9% per annumon average and between 2010 and2011 the decrease was 5.7%. This hasoccurred during a period when the totalAustralian resident population hasincreased by 49% (from 15.29 million to22.73 million).

Decreases in formal membership ofbowls clubs have been offset by growthin social, corporate and other participa-tion by non-members of bowls clubs, afunction of Australia's time poor population, seeking 'compact' or 'packaged' forms of recreation.

Laws of the Game andDomestic Regulations

It is the responsibility of all players tobe fully aware of the Laws of the Game, the Domestic Regulations and Conditionsof Play under which their Championship/Competition is being played.

All Club and District Championshipsare played under the Conditions of Playas set out by NSWWBA (Blue Book) andfor Club Competitions, the Club mayhave conditions of play FOR THESECOMPETITIONS that are different to theBlue Book, Law 17.2.2 and Appendix A1 sets out conditions which may be included by the Club for these competitions.

Ignorance of the Laws is no excusefor a breach of the Laws or Conditions ofPlay which may lead to disqualification, which can be heartbreaking for the players concerned, and cause a lot ofdisquiet within a club.

Intended PlayerAn intended player is one whose entry

has been accepted in a team or side fora particular competition. From the timethat the entry is lodged until the gamecommences the player is an intendedmember.

Up until the close of entries, andbefore the draw is done, the intendedmember is only a name on the entrysheet, and may be changed.

Replacement PlayerA replacement player is one who is

appointed to take the place of an intended player prior to the start of thecompetition (prior to their first round) fora reason accepted by the ControllingBody.

Some examples which are beingoverlooked by competitors and couldlead to disqualification are as follows:-• The introduction of a Replacement

Player without notification and approvalby the Controlling Body that it is intended to have a replacement. DR 4.1.4

• The introduction of a Substitute Pre-competition without permission of theControlling Body DR 4.4.1

• The introduction of a Substitute duringcompetition without permission of theControlling Body. DR 4.7.1

• A Substitute playing in the position ofSkip. The substitute should play in anyposition other than Skip, and the other

members of the team can rearrangetheir positions as necessary. Law 51.4.and DR 4.7.2.3

• Introduction of a substitute for an afternoon game without permission ofthe Controlling Body. Permission havingbeen granted for the morning gamedoes not apply for the afternoon game.Permission must be sought before thestart of each game in a competition, should a substitute be required.

• The introduction of an ineligible playerin the team. This could be a player whotransferred from another club or a newmember and was not a member of theclub when the nominations closed for aChampionship-Club or District.

• A substitute must be chosen fromavailable eligible players whose playingability should not be taken intoaccount. DR 4.7.2.1

• The introduction of a player who is anintended member of another team toplay as a substitute.

• If an intended player, team or sidewithdraws without being constituted, the member(s) will be regarded as nothaving entered the competition and beeligible to be a replacement player orsubstitute in that competition. DR 4.2.1

• A member of a team who has receivedor given a forfeit in the competition andacts as a substitute in another team inthe same competition. DR 4.2.2

• A substitute for an original member of ateam of pairs which had introduced areplacement player PC and the originalmember of the team was unable toplay. DR 4.7.5.2

As players you must always have apositive self reinforcement in your

training and the need to analyse whatyou and your coach have done in thecoaching session – both now and inthe past, remembering only the POSITIVE aspect of your experiences.

This is a simple process in which youcan change your ‘Way of Thinking orATTITUDE’ to condition your mind to thinkpositively both either your process of theshot and your technique.

Positive ReinforcementTo have a condition change to your

thinking process you must exercise positive reinforcement –

• Remember exactly what happenedwhen a good shot was played.

• Remember how the team reacted.• How important the shot was to the

match. • How you felt after the shot.

As a player it is vital that you learn torecall these details and recall, picturethem again and again and again in yourmind, keep reinforcing yourself with a

mental ‘pat on the back’. If you don’t youwill gradually forget how good that shotwas on the day and how good you playedunder pressure – if you do not relive thatshot you will only remember the game isan abstract or a summary in a non positive sort of way.

Players who draw on this skill underpressure and remind themselves they canplay well, have done the hard yards atpractice respond best in a tough situation.

‘How do ‘YOU ‘learn the skillof positive reinforcement?’FIRSTLY

• Make a list of GOOD words or phras-es known as ‘Trigger words’ thatyou can learn and use during a gameand use during practice of the shots.

• For example, REACH 6 inchesbehind shot – Terrific TRAIL SHOT –Great on Shot.

• Continue to go through them andwhen the time is right remind yourselfhow well you played. Every time youplay a good shot or do somethingwell in a match tell yourself, with

Coaching Report

enthusiasm, how good you playedthe shot. The person you need toconvince is yourself .

SECONDLY• Remember memorable occasions –

how you felt-how the team membersfelt and reacted when they congratu-lated you on a “TOP SHOT”. Alsowhen club members tell you how wellyou played in the game say THANKYOU and remember the feeling.

THIRDLY• Look for and discover weakness in a

particular part of your game – this iswhere a Club coach will assist you.

• Finding a weakness gives you thechance to practice that shot andmake it a strength and you and yourcoach know that with continual practice it will become a strength.

When you continually think positivethoughts you will come to believe in themif you believe you have done the hardyards and you know you have and thinkwith a determined positive attitude you willcontinue to improve and the games youmay have lost by a close margin you arenow winning. ‘A winning attitude beginswith a planned program of purposefulgoals and continued practice’.

Elite players in all sports rehearse theexact form of a skill, they rehearse it bothphysically and mentally more consistentlyand for longer periods than mediocreplayers. It is better to err on the side oftoo much mental rehearsal than too little.

Mental rehearsal should not be generalbut must be detailed and specific to theevent that is about to happen and theactions that you need to take as a playerat that moment.

Jack Nicklaus, I am sure you have allheard of — his no ‘1’ skill is playing hisshots using Visualisation. It is said that hebecome so good at it that he could seehimself playing the shot watching as aspectator .

Practice your visualisation and mentalrehearsal as you practice your game skills, you never know your skill could becomeso good that you do it in colour and it willbecome automatic to play your game in aplanned, positive and relaxed manner.

PRACTICE HARD PLAY EASY

The Positive Attitude or Way of Thinking

“Triumph over Adversity!

A Gold Medal! You will never play bowls for Australia as an able-bodied player,

but you will win gold as a disabledbowler”. These words were uttered byLynn Smith’s sister, Trudianne Flack asLynn recovered in Intensive Care sevenyears ago after succumbing to anepidural abscess, which left her anincomplete paraplegic.

In 2007 Lynn joined Wheelchair SportsNSW and participatedin many competitions. At the AustralianOpen held in Darebinin February 2012Lynn representedNSW in the Singlesand defeated KaytlynSmith of Queenslandin the final of theBWD Women’sAAWD (AustralianAthletes with aDisability).

With her husband, Ted, this very excited lady was presented with a goldmedal by Neil Dalrymple, CEO of BowlsAustralia. It has been a long journey ofrecovery supported by her family and thebowling fraternity. Lynn has played bowlssince 1980, achieving NSW selection 7times and Round Robin four times.

She nominated as a State Selector in2004 and holds this position at the present time. She is immediate pastPresident of Roselands WBC, where shehas been a member for 25 years.

In recognition of Lynn’s determinationand courage, Trudianne commenced thevery successful “Lynn Smith Over 60’sLadies Pairs Classic” five years ago. Lynnis recognised by her crooked walkingstick! Lynn’s remarkable success is due toher wonderful family and the many friendsmade through lawn bowls.

Maryann lives with her husband,David, in God’s country, the BlueMountains. She says they are emptynesters now, except for Buzz, the foxterrier. Their beautiful daughter livesand works in the city but thankfullyvisits often. Maryann is still a proudmember of her local club at Glenbrook, where she rolls up often. When and where did you start to playbowls?

I began playing bowls at Glenbrook inthe beautiful Blue Mountains becausethey advertised a free sausage sizzle anddrink one Sunday lunch in August 1998.

What encouraged you to take upbowls as a sport?

I was playing a lot of tennis and golf atthe time but I knew that the physicaldemands of both sports would eventuallytake their toll and I was looking for a lowimpact sport that I could play until at least90. Plus the coach told me I was a “natural” and that was really all it took.(Ha ha!)

In a previous life what was your working background?

I’ve worked in large corporations, mostly in the area of Human Resources.Eventually, I branched out and started myown Corporate Training Business, fromwhich I recently retired.

What size bowls are you playing withthese days, and do you still have time toplay pennants?

I play with a Size 3 GreenmasterPower and I definitely still play competi-tive bowls with my club, St. Johns Park.I’ve just returned from the Australian

Open where I luckily played in all disciplines.

What do you find very special about playing bowls? Or what do you enjoyabout playing bowls?

I guess what drew me to bowls, keepsme playing, and that is the competition. To me it’s like a game of chess with a littleexercise thrown in. You don’t understandthe level of strategising and skill until youcommence playing and then you’rehooked. The bonus is the people youmeet along the way and the life-longfriendships that follow.

Has your love of bowls led you into someother interesting directions?

It has now. When I retired last year Igave away my business suits, threw outthe alarm clock and packed up the training notes. I never anticipated becoming a member of the board, buthere I am.

If you could go anywhere you like, wherewould it be and with whom?

I do not travel long distances in planesvery well. Having said that, the Caribbeanwould definitely be on the list and I’d goof course with my wonderful, very under-standing and patient husband of 27years, David. He doesn’t bowl!

You have won a competition to have dinner with three other people, whowould you choose and why?

I guess I’d be restricted to choosingpeople who are alive today, otherwiseMartin Luther King would be on my list.Of the living, I’d choose Sarah O’Hare, because of her grace and style, RickyGervais because of his comedic abilityand Edward De Bono. I’m fascinated by his intellectual theories on brain dominance and thinking styles.

What is your wish for the future of bowls?I want so much for our sport. Media

coverage is essential for growth and marketing to the right demographic willbe critical for maintaining momentum. The Board is progressive and forwardthinking and I want to see bowls growmore professional without killing theenjoyment for our grass roots players, who participate simply for the socialopportunities which are abundant. Thebeauty of bowls is that you can play atthe level you choose. We should neverlose sight of the fact that the tree mightflower and flourish at the top but makingsure the roots are stable and well nourished is critical to a healthy and longlived plant. That’s how I see bowls.

Following the spectacular AustralianOpen, the National Selection Panel

has named nine women and sevenmen as the Australia ‘A’ squad, mark-ing them as potential internationalrepresentatives.

Established to serve as a feeder system into the national squad, thenewly formed Australia ‘A’ squad is anamalgamation of the existing Australia‘A’ and Emerging squads. The new format ensures the squads are closeraligned with the Australian SportsCommission’s recommended athletetiering system.

In a bid to further re-energise theteam, the new squad includes a healthyinfusion of young blood with recentlycrowned Under 18 Female Bowler of theYear, WA’s 17-year-old Kristina Krstic, securing a berth alongside 17 year oldSA’s Renee McPharlin, who has

advanced from the Under 18 squad. The two young-guns will be joined by

experienced bowling heavyweightsNSW’s Julie Keegan, who until last yearhad been a member of the nationalsquad since 2007, and Victoria’s 2006Commonwealth Games bronze medallistBarrie Lester.

National coach, Steve Glasson, isconfident the mix in age and experiencewill result in a successful combination.

“After their exceptional performancesat the Australian Open it's pleasing tosee newcomers like Renee McPharlin,Elise Cowan and Rechelle Cole join thesquad alongside experienced playerslike Anne Johns and Barrie Lester. Theexperience of the older players will nodoubt rub off on our younger athletes.”

The national squad will be reviewedfollowing the Super 6’s and AustralianSides Championships in Qld in April.

Would you like to share some of yourhistory of playing in pennant teams?

I am playing. I received a phone call atwork to fill in when a lady hurt her backmid-season back in the ‘90s. So after afew phone calls, I was allowed to takeannual leave one day each week to play.Got hooked, have played ever since andloving it. We won No. 2 Grade and wereelevated to the 1’s. After a few years, became stronger and won back to backflags in 2008-09.

The Soldiers Point ladies surprised usone time when we travelled up there. Alleight of them greeted us with white wigson. Their reason was they had to keep upwith the Alder Park “Glamour Pusses”.

Have you had any challenges in yourbowling career?

My biggest challenge was againstKaren Murphy at Warilla in the final of theIndoor Singles. I was petrified. My mainconcern was I did not know anyone thenand even though I was very well lookedafter by the Warilla ladies and the State, the thought of playing in front of so manypeople, and the worry that I would notscore a shot and make a fool of myselfwas very confronting. However after 5ends I scored, settled down, and endedup a draw in each of the 2 sets. Karenwon the tie break.

Have you always been good at bowls?I have always been pretty steady,

always keen and competitive in any sportor competition.

Have you had some successes withyour bowls and what were they?

Yes I have been pretty lucky. Kept trying in the Indoor at Warilla and won theevent in 2007. 3rd in the NSW MasterSingles. District and Zone Singles, DistrictTriples x 3, Fours.

What is so special about playingbowls?

You get to meet many interesting people wherever you go and are alwaysmade most welcome. I have made somany wonderful friends, one of whom isMeg McClure. Meg and I have been going

It must have been about 18 years.

Please tell us how you came to be interested in bowling and what keepsyou going on playing?

I used to play carpet bowls with mumand dad on a Friday night, enjoyed it somuch, got into the competitions and didOK. After a few years, I received every-thing needed to play lawn bowls (including double-fronted full petticoat and pantyhose) and the rest is history.

You live up towards Kotara, what isyour bowling club?

Alder Park in New Lambton.

Can you tell us a bit about the regionyou are representing?

There are three districts, from as far asMurrurrundi in the Upper Hunter to TeaGardens in Newcastle, with Hunter inbetween.

What size and colour are your bowls?Size 3 in a mottle green.

Tell us a bit of your history with bowls. Is this the only club you have belongedto and a brief summary of the highpoints at this club or others to whichyou have belonged.

I have always been at Alder Park. Mymum and I played in the club gamestogether when she transferred. We wonthe Fours the week of her 90th birthday in2008. She was the oldest bowling member (male and female) at the time. She died in May 2009. I have played forNSW Country in the past and been in theNewcastle Representative side since2000.

How many days a week do you bowl? That’s hard to say, quite a few at times,

depends what is on. A few years back, 16days in a row (a bit much). Our districtgames are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday.

away playing together in different eventsfor quite a few years now. We even allowJohn to join us when his health is OK.

What information would you give tobowlers to help them along.

You should learn all the rules and etiquette. Be a good sport, and play withconfidence.

Have you had any funny or interestingexperiences you would like to sharewith us?

My first rep game for D Group was inthe days of long skirts and hats. We travelled to Lithgow and froze. There I wasin this dowdy skirt and hat. Went to theladies, when leaving, turned the wrongway, faced this bowler, and being myusual friendly self, said “Gooday”, andthen realised it was a mirrored wall, and Iwas talking to myself. Luckily no one elsewas in there at the time.

If you could go anywhere on a dreamholiday, where would you go and whowould you take to share it with you?

I would go on a European river cruisewith the love of my life.

What makes you proud to be a bowler?I was nominated and received a

Commonwealth Sports AchievementAward which I most humbly accepted.

Would you like to share you favouritetelevision programme and what makesit so good for you to watch?

As I love to cook, I enjoy watching anycooking shows. I also enjoy Dancing withthe Stars and any talent shows. AustralianStory is another favourite, and of course, any bowls.

What is it like living in Kotara, can yougive us an idea of where this is please. If you could change your life whatwould you do, where would you live?

Kotara is a great suburb to live. Only10 minutes from town, the beach, myclub and Charestown. I think the onlything I would do different, not get marriedso young.

Maree, bowlers who went to last year’sState Carnival will remember you as atap dancing expert. When did you starttapping and do you still go to lessons, when, where and how?

I retired in late 2008, left my husbandin 2009. Then took up tap dancing. Wehave an over 60’s group in Cardiff withlessons on Mondays and Fridays. Weentertain at nursing homes, retirement villages and charity events.
