3natural awakenings April 2012

Recently, a couple of potential clients have asked us if we ever going to ‘go glossy’ in terms of our cover and

paper. It’s a great topic for our Green Living issue and Earth Day! Natural Awakenings was founded on the principal of Healthy Living and a Healthy Planet and that con-tinuing commitment is evident in our conscious choice to publish Natural Awak-enings in the most environmentally-friendly way possible.

While glossy pages look beautiful, they are created by baking either kaolin or calcium carbonate clay onto the paper. Not only is this harder to recycle (because the clay gunks up the re-pulping of paper) but calcium carbonate is harvested by sheering off moun-taintops. After the clay is baked on, it’s ‘fi xed’ with petroleum-based varnishes, aqueous solutions that require heat or a UV-coating which also contains petroleum.

We start with recycled, recyclable and chlorine-free paper. Then we insist on soy-based inks to print Natural Awakenings because they have virtually no VOC emissions. Finally, we use a cold-set printing process that uses less energy and chemicals while also uti-lizing recyclable printing plates. Our local printing partner, Signature Offset, has an entire website dedicated to green printing: Defi ning-SustainablePrinting.com.

We know from our national surveys (independent CVC Verifi cation Council) that our readers are well-educated and savvy. Yes, looking good is important, but our readers know that the content and the conscious intent of our magazine are even more so. That’s why you trust us over internet, tv and radio for your health information. Per-haps we could attract more clients or readers with an eye-popping glossy cover, but our principles dictate that we are solution-focused and we walk the walk.

After you’ve read the articles, checked out the ads and circled your calendar events, go ahead and use us to compost, as ground cover, etc. While we don’t advise you to eat it, it wouldn’t kill you if you did.

coverartistMother Earth by Jenness Cortez

Renewal and purpose are repeating themes in the contemporary works of Jenness Cortez, symbolically portrayed in luminous layers. Internationally recognized and collected as a master realist painter, Cortez is revered for her remarkably intimate landscapes. Her vision comprehends all nature as a manifestation of the divine. Inspired by the light, color and form of the great mas-ters, Cortez’s dynamic and rich compositions invite the viewer’s eye to move eagerly through her paintings again and again, savoring every nuance. Cortez says she hopes her work inspires the beholder to rediscover, revalue and reintegrate their own creative force into the hurried regi-men of modern life. “I want to lead people to something good and eternal,” she says. The Indiana-born artist began her studies under the guid-ance of noted Dutch painter Antonius Raemaekers. She further developed her fi ne arts background as a graduate of the Herron School of Art, in Indianapolis, and a student of Arnold Blanche, at the Art Students League of New York. View the artist’s portfolio at CortezArt.com. Cortez is also co-founder of the nonprofi t American Meditation Institute (AmericanMeditation.org).

EFFECTIVE, LASTING TREATMENTS FOR ACNE

Despite the fact thatacne manifests on the

skin, it is a condition that originates within the body.

There are at least five separate root causes of acne in Chinese Medicine. Each one can combine with any of

New Tower Garden System

The Tower Garden, developed by Tim Blank, Chief Hor-ticulturist for the Epcot Exhibit, is a vertical aeroponic

growing system that can be used to grow any non-root veg-etable and herbs, in large or small spaces. “The Tower Garden is great for wanna-be gardeners who don’t know where to start. It’s easy to install and maintain, requires no weeding, is less climate-sensitive, and you can grow indoors during the winter,” said Heather Clark, Tower Garden representative. The Tower Garden offers a higher yield of crops in a smaller space, is safe and ecologically friendly, using less than 10% of the traditional amount of water, and grows stronger, healthier plants, faster. globalbriefsGlobal GardensNew Global Warming Planting MapThe color-coded map of planting zones on the back of seed packets is being updated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to refl ect climate changes brought on by global warming. The new guide, last updated in 1990, refl ects, for instance, that the coldest day of the year isn’t as frigid as it used to be, so some plants and trees can now survive farther north. Nearly entire states, such as Ohio, Nebras-ka and Texas, are now classifi ed in warmer zones. The new guide uses better weather data and offers more in-teractive technology. Gardeners using the online version can enter their Zip code and get the exact average coldest tem-perature. For the fi rst time, calculations include more detailed factors, such as prevailing winds, the presence of nearby bod-ies of water and other local topography. Boston University Biology Professor Richard Primack ob-serves, “There are a lot of things you can grow now that you couldn’t grow before. People don’t think of fi gs as a crop you can grow in the Boston area. You can do it now.” The changes come too late to make this year’s seed packets, but they will be on next year’s, says George Ball, chairman and CEO of the W. Atlee Burpee seed company.

Better ThreadsRug Industry Tackles Child Labor InjusticeThe nonprofi t GoodWeave organization works to end child labor in the rug industry and provides educational opportunities for kids in weaving communities worldwide. The GoodWeave label is given solely to rug com-panies that only hire employees of legal work-ing age. GoodWeave, offering the world’s only independent child labor-free certifi ca-tion for rugs, makes unannounced inspec-tions of looms overseas to ensure that standards are upheld. Programs funded by GoodWeave-certifi ed rug sales have helped nearly 10,000 children in Nepal and India to attend school instead of working on looms. An estimated 250,000 children are still weaving today. “It’s widely documented that children are exploited to make all sorts of products in our global economy,” says Nina Smith, GoodWeave USA executive direc-

tor. “But in the case of carpets, consumers can do something to put a stop to these inhumane prac-tices. By buying a certifi ed rug, you can change a child’s life.”

GREEN VEGGIES BOOST IMMUNITYResearchers reporting in the journal

Cell have found another good reason to fi ll our plates with plenty of green vegetables like bok choy and broc-coli: Tiny chemical compounds found in these healthful greens interact with the immune cells of the gut, known as intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL), by ef-fectively protecting them and boosting their numbers. IELs, white blood cells that inhabit the lining of many body cavities and structures, are concentrated in the gas-trointestinal tract, where their primary purpose is to destroy target cells that are infected by pathogens. Because patho-gens frequently enter the body via the gastrointestinal tract, a high IEL count ben-efi ts overall health.

DIABETES LINKED TO DIRTY AIRHealth wise, the air we breathe is

just as important as the foods we eat, according to a recent report pub-lished in the journal Diabetes Care. The report is based on one of the fi rst large-scale, population-based studies linking diabetes prevalence with air pollu-tion. According to researchers from Children’s Hospital Boston, a strong, consistent correlation exists between adult diabetes and particulate air pol-lution, an association that persists after adjustment for other risk factors such as obesity and ethnicity. The relationship was seen even at exposure levels below the current U.S. Environmental Protec-tion Agency safety limit.

CHAKRA Health BasicsChakra is the Sanskrit word for spinning

wheel. The human body has seven energy centers situated around the spine (Sushumna). Each chakra vibrates at its own frequency in a circular pattern like ripples in a pond. Blocks to energy fl ow in any Chakra have physiological or psychological effects in the body. Each chakra has special functions but functions in systems just like the organs. Imbal-ances contribute to conditions such as excessive infl ammation or overactive stress hormones and can lead to physical and mental manifestations of poor health. The Seven main chakras are: Root Chakra–survival, security, energy, trust and power to achieve. Associated with skeleton, legs, bones, spine and large intestine. Sacral Chakra–feelings, self-awareness, self-love and creativity. Associated with the kidneys, bladder, sexual organs and the reproductive system. Solar Plexus Chakra–personality, self-respect and self-confi dence. Associated with the digestive system, small intestine, skin and nervous sys-tem. Heart Chakra–love, compassion, sharing and forgiveness. Associated with the heart, chest, lungs, arms, hands and circulation. Throat Chakra–cre-ative self-expression, communication and inspiration. Associated with the throat, neck, nose, mouth and teeth. Third Eye Chakra–intuition, understand-ing, insight and realization. Associated with the eyes, ears, base of skull and nervous system. Crown Chakra–knowing, wholeness, perfection, enlighten-ment and unity. Associated with the upper skull and skin. Chakras can be brought into balance through yogic practices such as asanas, meditation and sound to improve physical and mental health and increase internal bliss. Medicine for Mother EarthSandra Ingerman, author of “Medicine for

the Earth: How to Transform Personal and Environmental Toxins,” studied alterna-tive methods of reversing pollution for 20 years and spoke about this spiritual practice at the United Nations on July 27, 2006. “Us-ing these principals in ceremony,” she stated, “has been scientifi cally proven to change polluted water back to a more neutral state.” These same principals were used in 2004 in a heart study at the University of Michigan. Patients who continued to use this daily prac-tice are doing better than those who have not been exposed to these techniques. A Medicine For The Earth gathering teaches ways to embody the divine and be fully present with it. Participants learn to move beyond their physical form, con-nect with “divinity,” and bring that power through their very being. They radiate this energy throughout their bodies, out to the earth and to those around them, by trans-muting disharmony and bringing it back into its natural state of coherency. These skills enhance all spiritual or religious prac-tices. Ingerman says, “When we apply these principles and spiritual practices to our lives, the focus is not ‘what we are doing’ but ‘who we are’ that changes the world.” For more information, please go to Shaman-icTeachers.com, email [email protected] or call Karen at 303.665.0175

Energy Healings for our PetsAccording to the Centers for Disease Con-

trol and Prevention and the American Veterinary Medical Association, our pets are not only family companions, they are also benefi cial to our health. Keeping a pet com-panion has been proven to decrease: Blood pressure, Cholesterol, Triglycerides and Feel-

ings of loneliness or depression. Pets also improve our chances of exercising outdoors and connecting socially. As wonderful healers in our lives they sometimes need healing too. From an energy standpoint, they can hold onto negative energy just like us. A pet energy healing can benefi t pet and owner alike and is something you can learn to do yourself. You can invite the Angels to lend healing to your pet with a few easy steps and you don’t have to hold any specifi c beliefs to do this. Simply close your eyes, take a few deep breaths and ask Archangel Raphael to be by your side to give your pet an energy healing. During the healing, energetic blocks will be removed and pain or discomfort will be released. This will start the healing process for any physical injuries. You may notice a calming sensation, see images in your mind’s eye or even have a knowingness of what is happening between your pet and Archangel Raphael. Don’t forget to ask for healing for yourself! Whether your pet is healthy or ill, an energy healing can strengthen the bond and improve the relationship between owner and pet. Your pets will fi nd the attention and energy fun and may surprise you with their receptiveness. Anita Destino is the founder of Journey Within, a safe place for people interested in creating change in their lives. Pet Energy Healings will be held Saturday, April 21, see calendar for details. 720-413-7303, [email protected] or AnitaDestino.com.

QiGong Promotes Well-BeingQigong is an ancient art and science of health care and

energy management that has been practiced in China for thousands of years. It is a combination of deep-breathing, medi-tation and isolated movements which connect an individual to himself while eliminating daily stressors and frustrations. According to a Swedish study presented in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine by Terjestam, et al, students who practiced QiGong twice weekly over eight weeks reported decreased stress, improved well-being and self-image. Researchers were interested in whether or not the traditional practice of Qigong would help improve student’s whole body health.

The students in the Qigong group reported feeling more relaxed, increased self-awareness and improved confi dence in their academic performance. The non-QiGong control group saw increased levels of stress, anxiety and depression over the same eight weeks. Today’s fast-paced, over-stimulated lifestyles can be softened with a bi-weekly QiGong practice that is great for adults and kids alike. It is also a great bonding activity that can be done together, just tell your kids that “we’re going to a ‘martial-arts’ class!” QiGong is considered as a ‘soft’ martial art because it focuses on breathing, poses, movements and spiritual concentration, which are the foundation for all ‘hard’ martial arts. The benefi ts of having fun, reducing stress and bonding with your kids can be enjoyed by anyone. David Stevens is owner of Yoga of the Mind. Their next monthly Qigong & Meditation workshop is April 15, 1:30-4:30pm. $35. 303-668-2358. Yogaofthemind.com.

Obesity rates in the U.S. are currently 33% and still another third of the population is overweight. Diabetes rates are projected to increase to 1 in 3 by the year 2050; truly staggering numbers which go hand-in-hand with other health issues such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, stroke, and cancer. Early signs of insulin resistance (or pre-

diabetes) can even be seen in children and teenagers when weight gain around the mid-section starts to appear. Diet is at the root cause of these situations and numerous factors can play a role, yet public nutrition and weight loss advice can be very confusing and sometimes downright hazardous. Weight loss protocols must be personalized to your unique health situation and medical supervision may be necessary. Learn about making healthy, permanent lifestyle changes with Karin Dietrich, Master Nutrition Therapist, at a free presentation on proven, effective health and weight loss protocols. Topics presented include glycemic-load balanced meal planning, which is a very foundational concept for good health and especially anyone with blood sugar issues. We will also discuss the usefulness and application of cleansing, modified-elimination and anti-inflammatory diets, the Paleo-Diet, and the concept of the ‘Metabolic Reset Diet’ for those whose metabolism is really ‘stuck’. Gain insight into which food, environmental and lifestyle triggers may be causing your weight problems and how to address them with dietary measures. The presentation will be held on April 26that 6pm in the Clear Sky Medical conference room. Call today to register at 303-790-7860.

Organic Spring Lawn RejuvenationBy Josh Studer

If your lawn isn’t thick, lush and

healthy, it may be frus-trating to hear that the best defense against weeds and other pests is a thick, healthy lawn. How do you convert a bare, weed-infested lawn into a self-sustaining, healthy lawn? Springtime is a good time to start the conversion process. Start the rejuvenation this year with the following three steps, keeping in mind that it can take two years to complete the transformation depending on the current condition of your lawn.

THATCH ASSESSMENT: A thick thatch layer (consisting of dead roots, stems and organic matter accumulated near the soil surface) suggests heavy prior use of pesticides and chemical fer-tilizers. This layer prevents water, fertilizers, and other amend-ments from reaching the soil. Thatch removal can be done with a powered vertical mower, manually with a thatch rake, or com-post top-dressing after aeration. Applying a top-dressing after a thorough aeration is effective in spring because this allows mi-cro organisms to mix with the soil to promote decay of thatch.

WEEDS: There is no such thing as a completely weed-free lawn, but an abundance of weeds indicate the lawn isn’t healthy enough to sustain itself. Build a healthy soil for grass to thrive and choke out the weeds. Weeds are vulnerable in the spring so they tend to have a tougher time surviving when disrupted. Battle them early and often by pulling off the fl ower before the weed produces seeds. Spraying them with an organic herbicide is another effective method of control. Then, overseed to fi ll in the bare spots with new grass.

MAINTENANCE: Build soil health and microorganism activ-ity by applying a slow-release organic fertilizer-very poor soil will need more frequent applications. Cut grass to a longer length (2.5-3.5 inches) to grow a thick, healthy grass blade with a stronger root system which will also provide more soil shade to reduce the amount of weeds and evaporation. Water late at night or early morning to prevent fungi growth and water evaporation. Water deeply, infrequently and only as needed for healthier roots.

Now you are on your way to building and/or maintaining a healthy organic lawn. Just remember that patience is key and if you have questions regarding your lawn’s condition, call an experienced lawn care expert.

Josh Studer is with Clean Air Lawn Care, a locally owned and sustainable, organic lawn care service. 303-681-4543. Clea-nairlawncarecherrycreek.com. See listing page 28.

focused mainly on helping people who suffer from thyroid condi-tions or people who have thyroid-related symptoms (foggy-headed, fatigue, weight gain for no reason, constipation, depression, dry skin and hair, low libido, among others) but isn’t managed by their physician because they are in the “acceptable” ranges of good thyroid health.

Drs. Ian and Karen Hollaman and their practice at Red Tail Wellness have been of particular interest to me because I have hypothyroid, diagnosed for about 7 years now. I was told by the fi rst physician who diagnosed me that I would likely be on medication the rest of my life due to a family history of thyroid disorder. Recently, my physician increased my dosage because it isn’t working as effec-tively as it was 2 years ago.

Does this sound like you? I had a chat with Drs. Ian and Karen to talk about how they help their thyroid or thyroid-symptomatic patients improve their health and why it’s important to partner with different practitioners for your opti-mum health.

Red Tail Wellness By Terry Chriswell

NA: Tell me why I shouldn’t just take a pill every day for my thyroid for the rest of my life?

I&K: First, everyone should have an MD on their health care team, however, understand they are trained for a certain standard of care they are obligated to fulfi ll, and can be subject to litigation if they don’t. Therefore, their standard of care is to manage your symptoms and make you feel better, which a daily pill can do in the short term.

NA: And the long term?

I&K: Did you know that the “normal” ranges for thyroid function for LabCorp is different than Qwest? No wonder there are so many people with symptoms but are considered within normal ranges! What we understand as chiropractors and holistic functional medicine practitioners is the gray area – it’s not just about the numbers. The gray area is outside the scope of standard medical training. Ninety

percent of hypothyroid is an autoimmune response, which means the pill doesn’t work to correct the underlying cause of your hypothyroid issues. Over time, the autoimmune response will continue to attack your thyroid tissue, destroy it and you will lose more and more of the thyroid hormone, see your dosages consistently increase, have more side effects, more symptoms that you can’t even supplement for anymore.

NA: Scary. And then what?

I&K: Maybe in your 40’s you see these thyroid symptoms increase, but by the time you are 60, you could have joint problems, or cognitive decline which is now correlated to thyroid hormone use, more infl ammation and neurodegeneration. By that time, we can most likely only manage but not necessarily reverse. If you knew in your 40’s that your 60’s were going to be riddled with health problems, wouldn’t you do something in your 40’s about it?

I&K: So when I was in my 20’s and had the sense to realize my family history could affect me so profoundly, I could have found someone like you and avoided my hypothyroid issues today?

I&K: It is a misconception that your genetic background determines your health. It is mostly about your environment and your lifestyle choices including food, exercise and stress that determine your level of health. Epigenetics teaches us that your DNA is consistently rearranged or “expressed” so you are literally a different person than you were even a year ago. So yes, we could have taught you how to eat properly and how to handle stress, bring back a healthy biochemistry, repair and rebalance your immune system, help you enjoy your life throughout your life span so that it decreased the likelihood that you’d develop problems in your 40’s and beyond.

NA: What are the biggest, preventable problems you see these days?

I&K: First is probably personal re-sponsibility. People need to take the time and have a level of willingness to understand what it means to be healthy.

We are too often prone to instant grati-fi cation. Even if you know you will be healthier in a month, even healthier in a year, in 5 years, in a decade or two, there are a lot of people who don’t want to think that far ahead, or take the steps necessary to make life-long improvements. Second is blood sugar. Processed carbs and sugar foul up everything. Lots of people can’t handle carbs, are hypoglycemic or pre-diabet-ic, but again, instant gratifi cation wins. I want that Snickers now. Trust me, it will hurt you now and down the road. Last would be gluten. Again, one inci-dence of eating a cinnamon roll can be in your system for 6-9 months, caus-ing infl ammation. Our bodies haven’t properly developed the enzymes to break gluten down AND because of

bio-engineering, the gluten molecule is constantly changing. Our bodies don’t know how to use it. It’s like putting diesel gas in a premium engine.

NA: You talk a lot about optimum health, and I see you are experimenting on yourself with your new favorite supplement, turmeric. What does optimum health mean?

I&K: Redefi ning your health at every level. It not only means you have no visible symptoms, no daily pills, but you feel great. Then you say, “What can I do to feel even better now and down the road?” And we take you to the next step. Could be cleaning up bacteria in your gut, changing your diet, anti-infl ammatory supplements, applied kinesiology, you name it. We

motivate you, provide proper support and expectations and give you honest communication. This is for you, your family - especially kids - for future pregnancies. It’s about the best output possible. We learned this for ourselves, through our own medical issues, to help others empower their lives.

Green living is being embraced by more folks than ever, in ways both large and small, giving the Earth

some much-needed kindness. If you’re interested in some good ideas that fall be-tween a total home solar installation and basic recycling—with many delivering big impacts—check out Natural Awak-enings’ room-by-room green checklist. You’ll fi nd inspired, practical changes that are doable starting right now.

KitchenThe kitchen can be a hot spot for waste. Eileen Green, with EcoEvaluator.com, says that reducing waste, conserving water and increasing energy effi ciency are all important considerations within an environmentally friendly kitchen.

Eat up food. Each year, a typical household discards an estimated 474 pounds of food waste, ac-cording to University of Arizona

research—at large economic and environmental cost. Buying more fresh food than we can eat before the expira-tion date is up and allowing leftovers to expire in the fridge are culprits. “Draw-ing up menus and avoiding buying on impulse can help,” advises Green. Compost food scraps at home or sign up for curbside composting, if it’s offered locally. Disposing of food in garbage disposals or landfi lls is not environmentally sound.

Dispense with disposables. Replace disposable paper and plastic products with durable, lasting alternatives: cloth napkins instead of paper; dishwasher-safe serving ware instead of single-use paper or plastic; glass or recycled food storage containers in place of throwaway plastic bags and wrap; and natural fi ber dishcloths to replace paper towels and plastic sponges.

Clean naturally. Chemical power-houses have become the

norm in household cleaning products, but they are not essential. Non-toxic clean-ers are up to the task, from

cleaning a sink to an oven.

Shop for the Energy Star logo. Appli-ances bearing the Energy Star logo are up to 50 percent more energy effi cient than standard ones. This translates to signifi -cant savings in annual operating costs.

Filter water with less waste. Bottled water is expensive and wasteful. In-stead, purchase a home-fi ltering system that uses recycled or reusable fi lters. On the road, carry tasty fi ltered water in a reusable glass bottle.

Conserve water. Run dishwashers only when fully loaded and fi ll the sink with water, rather than running it down -*9water only to wet and rinse; other-wise turn it off.

Phase out non-stick skillets. Tefl on coatings can leach toxins when dam-aged or overheated. Play it safe and begin assembling a set of cookware that includes properly seasoned cast iron, which is naturally non-stick.

Avoid cheap reusable shopping bags. Flimsy reusable bags end up as trash within a few months under nor-mal use. Buy a set of high quality reus-able bags that will give years of use.

Bedrooms“Most people spend more time in the bedroom than in any other room of the house,” remarks Huffi ngton Post Eco Etiquette columnist Jennifer Grayson. “So it’s important to focus on mak-ing bedrooms as green and healthy as possible.” She advocates paying special attention to sleepwear, bedding and fur-niture people sleep on.

Start with a good foundation. Box springs can be constructed of plywood or particleboard, which commonly contain formaldehyde, classifi ed as a probable human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and a toxic air contaminant by the state of California. Choose those that have been certifi ed as formalde hyde-free or with low emissions. A platform bed made of Forest

Stewardship Council-certifi ed wood, sourced from sustainably managed forests, is a healthy alternative.

Don’t sleep on a cloud of chemicals. “If your face is pressed up against a conventional mattress for seven hours a night, then you’re going to be breathing in whatever chemicals are off-gassing from that mattress for seven hours a night,” warns Grayson. Mattresses are commonly treated with fi re-retardant chemicals to comply with U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commis-sion rules. To avoid toxic chemicals like the hydrocarbon toluene, emitted from mattresses stuffed with polyurethane foam, instead look for untreated, wool-covered mattresses (wool is a natural fi re retardant) fi lled with natural latex or containing a spring system wrapped with organic cotton batting. Non-organic cotton production relies on lots of hazardous synthetic chemi-cals in its production. Organic cotton, linen and wool bedding are safer bets, especially when certifi ed to meet strict environmental standards.

Block the afternoon sun. During the day, shut off air-conditioning vents inside bedrooms and block the afternoon sun with interior or exterior solar shades. By day’s end, even in warm climates, bed-rooms should be cool enough for sleep-ing with the addition of a slight breeze from an open window or a slow-running fl oor or ceiling fan.

Go wireless. It’s impossible to com-pletely avoid electromagnetic radiation from today’s technologies, so lower exposure in the bedroom by removing electronic devices and placing electrical items at least fi ve feet away from the bed.

Forget fabric softeners. Most fabric softeners contain highly toxic chemicals that latch onto sheets and can be inhaled or absorbed directly into the bloodstream through skin. Instead, add a quarter-cup of baking soda to the wash cycle to soften sheets and other laundry.

Leave the lights off. Motion-detect-ing nightlights save energy while allow-ing safe passage in the wee hours.

Laundry RoomIn a typical U.S. home, the washing machine accounts for 21 percent of home water use and combined, the washer and dryer comprise 5 to 8 per-cent of home energy demands. Diane MacEachern, founder of BigGreenPurse.com and author of Big Green Purse: Use Your Spending Power to Create a Cleaner, Greener World, explains that a good way to conserve key resources is to use these appliances less—reducing the number of loads and drying items on outdoor clotheslines or indoor racks. MacEachern says, “You can probably wash things like sweatshirts and blue jeans less frequently without much con-sequence, and a clothesline requires no energy other than the sun.” Also, make sure that whatever goes into the washer or dryer with clothes is non-toxic, or else you’ll be wearing toxic chemical residues next to your skin all day, cau-tions MacEachern.

Select cold water. On average, only 10 percent of the energy used by a clothes washer runs the machine; the other 90 percent goes to heat the water. The typical American household does about 400 loads of laundry each year, resulting in much energy squandered on hot water. With the exception of laundering greasy spots or stubborn stains, routinely wash in cold water, using a cold-water eco-detergent.

Install a clothesline. Running a dryer for just 40 minutes can use the energy equivalent of a 15-watt, compact fl uorescent bulb lit for a week. Stretch out a line and hang clothes outside to dry in the fresh air to save about $100 a year on electric bills. The sun imparts a disinfectant benefi t as a bonus.

Replace an old machine. A washer or dryer that is older than 10 years has hidden costs. EnergyStar.gov notes that an

“Spring Green Rehab,” at Tinyurl.com/3nhan6s.

older machine uses more energy and can cost from 10 to 75 percent more to oper-ate than a new, high-effi ciency appliance.

Choose eco-friendly laundry products. Conventional laundry soaps contain chemicals that can be problem-atic for us and wreak havoc on marine ecosystems. Look for cold-water brands that are fragrance- and phosphate-free.

Switch to concentrates. Concentrated detergents translate to less energy used in shipping, less waste and more value.

Stop static cling without dryer sheets. Never over-dry clothes and al-ways dry natural fi bers separately from synthetics to prevent static cling.

BathroomThe smallest room in the house is a disproportionately large contributor to household environmental impacts. In an average non-conservation-minded American home, 38,000 gallons of water annually go down the drains and toilet. “Along with that water,” says MacEach-ern, “You’ll be washing lots of personal care and cleaning products down the drain, as well, where they could get into local natural water supplies and make life diffi cult for birds, frogs and fi sh.” Sara Snow, television host and author of Sara Snow’s Fresh Living: The Essential Room-by-Room Guide to a Greener, Healthier Family and Home, cautions against personal skin care products with questionable chemical ingredients. “A good percentage of them are being absorbed right into our bloodstream, so focus on ingredients that do no harm; ones that help our bodies instead, such as nourishing and healing botanicals.”

Slow the fl ow. Ultra-effi cient show-erheads use as little as 1 gallon per minute (gpm); aerated types that mix air into the water stream to enhance pressure provide a good soak and rinse using less than half the water than some other low-fl ow showerheads. At the sink, aerators should fl ow between 0.5 and 1 gpm—plenty of pressure for brushing teeth and washing hands.

Flush responsibly. According to the EPA, the toilet alone can use 27 percent

of household water. Replace older toilets (pre-1994) with new, higher effi ciency models for savings of two to six gallons per fl ush.

Heat water wisely. A tankless water heater supplies instanta-neous hot water only as needed. Or, install a timer on a traditional water heater to cut warming time to a few hours a day at most.

Shun a plastic shower curtain. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has been called “the poison plastic” for its highly toxic life-cycle, which includes the release of dioxins into the air and water. These toxic chemicals persist in ecosystems and can cause cancer. PVC shower curtains are also a short-life product that can-not be recycled, so switch to a PVC-free alternative. Organic hemp is the eco-shower curtain gold standard.

Ban antibacterial products. Triclosan is a popular antibac-terial agent found in many household cleaners, hand soaps, cosmetics and even toothpaste. It’s also a registered pesticide and probable human carcinogen that’s showing up in the environment and children’s urine. The Mayo Clinic suggests that triclosan may contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant germs and harm the immune system, making us more susceptible to bacteria.

Install a shower fi lter that removes chlorine. Chlorine, which is increasingly being linked to some cancers, is used by many municipalities to disinfect water supplies. People ab-sorb more chlorine through the skin and by inhaling chlorine vapors when bathing and showering than from drinking it.

Use recycled and unbleached paper products. Using recycled bath tissue helps close the recycling loop on all the paper we dutifully recycle at the curb. Unbleached varieties keep chlorine byproducts like dioxins out of the environment.

Remove bad odors instead of covering them up. In a Uni-versity of California study, chemical air fresheners were found to have higher concentrations of polluting volatile organic compounds (VOC) than any other household cleaning prod-uct. Long-term exposure to some VOCs have been linked with adverse health effects.

This Natural Awakenings checklist suggests steps that are possible in making any home healthier, safer and more en-joyable. Start checking off items today and begin shrinking the family’s ecological footprint right away.

Parents schooled in environmental principles strive to guide their children in like-minded directions. How can we inspire them to join in addressing larger challenges without coming across as a lecturer about yet another

obligation? Thankfully, there are many ways to make green living a feel-good, even easy and fun habit.

Cutting ConsumerismThe most important factor is to live as an example. Parents best teach children to buy less by buying less themselves. Discuss various consider-ations and ask for their opinions. According to a recent study by Empower MediaMarketing, kids see 12 to 14 minutes of commercials for every hour of television screen time. Talk about ads that target kids and how some retailers manipulate young audi-ences. Compare the advertised benefi ts of a new toy with their own experi-ences with it; does it measure up? Give kids attractive options and practice in making choices. “I tell them what a product contains and if it’s proven to cause health problems,” says Mary Marsh, a mother of three in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. “I also will tell them about a natural alternative. I really want them to make these im-portant decisions themselves. I can’t decide for them later on.”

Taming TrashChallenge children to fi nd reusable alternatives to disposable household items. Turn it into a game; conduct ex-periments to see how well the alterna-tives work and try their ideas. Put a spin on recycling. Instead of rinsing milk jugs and putting them out for recycling, save some to create an igloo indoors. Unwind that old sweater and use it in artwork. Cut apart old jeans and turn them into skirts. Decorate glass jars and repur-pose them as storage for pantry foods and miscellany. Take children to the local dump to identify items that could be recycled or reused. University of Utah research attests that half of all U.S. garbage could be recycled. In practice, we settle for about 2 percent. Encourage youngsters to make their opinions known. When a toy’s package is much larger than it needs to be, help them write the maker a letter asking the manufacturer to green their business.

Creating ConcernHelp children become experts. “Kids can inspire their friends and parents

20 Denver/Boulder Mile High Edition MileHighNaturalAwakenings.com

to be more environmentally con-scious,” advises Dr. Moshe Lewis, chief of physical medicine and rehab at the California Pacifi c Medical Cen-ter, in San Francisco. Surround the family with nature. “Kids are naturally curious. As they learn about the natural habitat of animals, their importance in the ecosystem and how beautiful they are, they develop an appreciation for the diverse fl ora and fauna species on Earth,” says Lewis. Barbara Smith started the Bow Wow Meow Kids Club at the Almost Home humane shelter, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, so that more children could visit the animals. “Volunteering at the shelter has more benefi ts for kids than just playing with cats and dogs,” says Smith. “It teaches how to be kind, how to earn trust and try to heal. It teaches them to be humane.” Involve kids in choosing good food. “I like to produce some food at home so we can lessen our footprints a bit more,” says Marsh. Two of her children help care for the family’s quails and collect eggs. The third cre-ates cartoons about the downside of factory farms.

dren feel fearful or even guilty that they can’t help. A parent can help calm their nerves, offer constructive perspective and help them feel like part of the solution. “Keep the tone of conversation on possibilities, rather than impending doom,” counsels Licensed Mental Health Counselor Brooke Randolph, of Indianapolis, Indiana. “Focus on what could happen, instead of what will.” Look for the positives. “A single choice is not causing global warming or the extinction of a species; rather, it is a build-up of several choices, made by many people, over and over again.” Talk about current incremental changes that are helping. Make doable, Earth-friendly goals and act together to make a difference. “No matter how small it is,” says Randolph, “if children feel they are doing something positive, they can feel more in control.” Finally, encourage self-expression. “For kids, being able to verbalize or express their feelings is critical,” says Lewis. “Sometimes, this requires more than just talk therapy. I have found that art and other creative ex-pressions are a way to work through various emotions.”
