New Philadelphia News Across the PAstors Desk We will convene a Congregational Council at precisely 10:15 a.m. on Sunday May 5. The council will have but one order of business: The election of delegates for the Quadrennial Synod of 2014 of the Southern Province of the Moravian Church in America. The 11:10 Service will begin immediately after the adjournment of the council. Those who wish to guarantee themselves the full worship experience, should make plans to attend the 9:00 a.m. service on that day, but we anticipate (and hope and pray) that the 11:10 service will take place as scheduled. The 2014 Synod will be held in at the YMCA’s Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, North Carolina from April 3 to April 6, 2014. There will be several pre-synod meetings, beginning in late summer of 2013, and the frequency and length of the meetings individual delegates attend will be determined by the Committee to which they are assigned. A synod delegate is free to vote his or her own convictions and conscience, as opposed to a “representative,” who is bound by the obligation he or she has to the people that elect them. Moravian Synods are comprised of delegates, not representatives. Synod is a wonderful opportunity, and we would like for as many people as possible to experience attending at least one synod during their tenure as a Moravian. New Philadlephia will elect 9 delegates. Pastors under call and full time certified DCE’s will automatically attend Synod, and do not count toward this number. It is important that we have delegates that will represent all the adults present here at New Philadelphia, from those just starting out in life, to those who are already in retirement. We realize that some delegates will be forced to take vacation time to attend, but the experience may be worth it to YOU. I say this to you because if you would like to be considered as a delegate, I would like to hear from you by the 15th of April. You may email me at [email protected]. Delegates must be at least 18 years of age, and a member in good standing of New Philadelphia Moravian Church. At least two of our delegates must be elected members of our Elders or Trustees. If you would like to know more about the responsibilities of a delegate, please contact me. I ask that everyone pray for the integrity and efficiency of this process. May God bless you richly The Pastor PAstor John Writes: Many thanks to our youth and families who helped with our pork shoulder butt sale during February and March! It was an incredible fundraiser for our summer youth mission trips, and we’re grateful for the great food and such tremendous support. Our youth also served the Lenten meal on March 10, which was a fun event for everyone involved. This summer, we’re returning to Laurel Ridge for Eco Mission Camp during the week of July 28-August 2. This week is open to any Middle High or Senior High youth, and it will be our eleventh year as a part of Mission Camp. As always, we’ll be serving our neighbors in the Alleghany and Ashe County areas, but this session is the first Eco Mission Camp for Laurel Ridge, and our projects will focus on helping the environment. Our Senior High youth will be serving on Staten Island, New York, from July 6-13, in an effort to help families affected by Hurricane Sandy several months ago. We have many activities coming up in April, including a hiking trip for Middle & Senior Highs at Stone Mountain on April 7. There is a Moravian Youth Rally at Friedland Moravian on April 21, and Youth Sunday will be April 28. We’re looking forward to this meaningful time of worship for our congregation, with our church’s youth leading all parts of the service. In between worship services, we’ll have a reception for youth and families. Congratulations to the Rev. Zach Dease on his ordination as a deacon of the Moravian Church on March 17! Zach was an active part of our youth program before graduating from high school, and he served as an intern with our congregation during the spring of 2009. We’re excited as he begins his ministry as the pastor of Mayodan Moravian Church. I look forward to seeing you in April! In Christ, The Rev. John G. Spotlight on.......Lib GreeneLib Greene’s name still comes up when people – especially women – talk about past Bible teaching at New Philadelphia. For many of her 50+ years as a member of the congregation, Lib taught Sunday School and led the Bethel Bible series in addition to numerous Bible studies. Countless adults and children have been affected by her service to the church and its body; in fact, it is that service that has given such meaning to her life. “It was the most

rewarding thing (leading Bible studies). It gave me such a good feeling about my life and the lives of those learning with me.”

The priority given to church life was part of Lib’s childhood. “My mother and father saw that it was the most important thing: They wanted to make sure that we gave time to the Lord every day.” Lib laughs when she talks about how she came to New Philadelphia. When I married my husband, Gene, he was Episcopalian and I was Presbyterian. We visited several churches, New Philadelphia among them. Someone from the pastoral staff visited us several times until Gene told him we’d join the church if he’d stop visiting.”

As Lib leafs through New Philadelphia’s pictorial directory, she stops at many of the photos and reminisces. “I’m so fond of Joan and Dale Bodenhamer…..Dale used to always bring me sweet potatoes.” And the Transous. “We traveled to Hawaii with Sue and Bill….that’s where a bear got after Bill!” As a high school Health and Nutrition teacher for 30 years, many of Lib’s students sit in the pews at New Philadelphia today, among them Karl Stimpson, Marilou Bradley and Tony Ebert. Lib’s beautiful apartment at Homestead is filled with furniture and accessories made by her husband who was an accomplished craftsman. Much of his handiwork can we found in homes throughout the New Philadelphia congregation. While she is unable to attend church services regularly, Lib stays in touch with many of the friends made over her years of active involvement, and prays for the continuing good work of the church and its people.

Missions AnD sociAl concernsAt our March meeting Charity and Kevin Manous brought us up to date on their mission work. Our committee helps them with their expenses yearly with a pledge of $8000. We disperse the monies monthly in the amount of $667.

This month we will disperse $1500 to the Braimas in Sierra Leone, $2000 to Samaritans Purse and $2000 to Amani Childrens Foundation.

We appreciate your continued support to our committee and the persons and organizations that we contribute to. We know our pledges are down this year, but we feel the Lord will continue to bless us with the funds to support His work here and around the world.

Acts 1:8 “You will be my witnesses-in Jerusalem, in all of Judea,in Samaria, and in every part of the world.”

Our next meeting will be April 14 at 5PM in the Banquet Room and enjoy Hayley Geis as she tells of her exciting plans for our brothers and sisters in Labrador. Come join us!

Changes Coming to Open Door LunchDesignated giving and special action by the Trustees have resulted in the Open Door Lunch being underwritten for the remainder of 2013. Your donations will still be accepted at the lunch and donated to a different non-profit organization each month. These actions enhance the ministry of the Open Door Lunch: While it will continue to be enjoyed by church members and their friends, the business community and people in our neighborhood, it will also impact men, women and children being served through some of our city’s finest charities. The benefitting not-profit for April is Sunnyside Ministries and representatives from that organization will be joining us for lunch.Another change is already underway, thanks to several dedicated volunteers. Open Door meals are being delivered to church members who are homebound. As one volunteer explains: “This is a way of us taking care of each other!”Please come out to support Sunnyside Ministries on April 3rd and enjoy a meal of baked ham, sweet potato casserole, steamed broccoli and croissants.

And remember: We always enjoy homemade desserts! Please help if you are able.
