Quilting is cheap therapy. being here isn't enough inspi- raon then there are the quilt shops and bead stores I'm finding everywhere I can. Bill can't believe he's come 5000 miles and he's sll waing outside quilt shops. I hear the weather at home has been kind of rough so hopefully you're all looking forward to a fun meeng next week. Harebrained Happen- ings is starng us off right at 1pm with their presentaon and will also have their paerns for sale so come prepared. Chris has planned a real variety of interesng speakers and programs taking us right to the end of the year so there really is something for everyone. We won't have me this month for our My Favorite Things segment fea- turing a guild member but I plan to do it again in May. I hope we have some adven- turous members who have already started on their piec- es for President's Challenge. I can praccally see the eyes rolling all the way from Maui! That's okay...it is supposed to be a challenge! I've heard the comments " I don't do art Aloha ! I'm wring this note from Maui and thought you might like a lile peek at the views we see all around us. If you look really hard at this photo you might see me perched on my suroard out there in my thong waing for the next wave......not a chance! Being here is just an amazing me to appreciate colour. There is the clear blue of the sky, fuscia, yellow and orange of the blossoms, every shade of green in the leaves, the palms and the foliage, the brown, black and earth col- ours of the volcanic rock, the light taupes of the sand and the rainbow of colours on surf boards and clothing. Even the waves aren't just one colour but a wild combi- naon of colours and hues. We saw a beach dweller walking with a huge parrot on his shoulder yesterday and all I could think was that the parrot would make an amaz- ing wall hanging! And if just quilts" or "I'm not interested in a landscape". All I can say is keep an open mind to it, start with a small idea and see where it takes you. I have an interesng book by Mary Lou Weidman called "Out of the Box...Unleash your creavity through quilts". She uses wild and wacky colours, very "out there" designs and a very humorous approach to her work. Throughout the book she imparts some of her ex- perience gained in many years of teaching her classes. Her thoughts on creavity, imaginaon and having the confidence to express your- self in your own style despite what others might think ring very true. I'll leave you with a quote from her book which really is a good lesson to get us out of our comfort zone and be adventurous...... “We’re all about to be Harebrained!”
“Always wanted to see a hippo wearing pink ballet slippers? Or maybe you dream of lions in green shoes. Check out the delightful works made by Trisha and Mary at www.harebrainedhappenings.com . We will have the pleasure of their company – and the company of all of their critters – at our April meeting. Put a smile on and come see what these two Canadian “Crafty Ladies” are doing.”
Trisha and Mary will be giving us a trunk show of quiltworks from their original patterns and will have the patterns for sale during our break. They gladly accept cash or cheque, prices includes tax.
They will be starting their program at 1:05 and patterns will be for sale at our break from 2:00 to 2:30.

The Sunshine Quilt Show committee met for the first time after our regular meeting in March. Thank you to the ladies who stayed for the meeting and offered to help organize the show. They are as fol- lows:
Chair: Marilyn Lippert
Evening Guild Liaison:
Members’ Market: Dar Whyte, Joanne Colton, Linda Hartwick, Joyce Smith
Publicity:
Raffle Quilt: Loretta Hughes, Pat Hill
Tea Room:
Volunteers: Nikki Watt
However, we still require a co-chair for volunteers, publicity and tea room co-chairs.
The show will be held April 12 & 13, 2014 at Trillium Manor. The residents of Trillium love the activity and excitement the show creates. We are fortunate that we do not have to pay for the venue since Trillium Manor is a Simcoe County home. As well, we are not charged for the quilt display racks. A portion of the 2010 raffle quilt proceeds was used to purchase a wheelchair accessible table shuffle board game that the residents use frequently. The balance of the 2010 and the 2012 proceeds have been used to order a piece of physio equipment. Our show not only displays our creative output but greatly assists the residents of Trillium Manor.
The instructions for the raffle quilt block were published in last month’s newsletter. Our aim is to have all our guild members participate in the construction of the 2014 raffle quilt.
The intent forms for displaying items in the show and for purchase at the Members’ Market will be available in the fall. It’s never too early to start thinking about what you are going to put into the show.

Library
Okay, my courses are finished, with varying degrees of success, and I can turn my attention back to the library. We have a few new acquisi-
tions.
Sewflakes by Kathy K. Wylie. This is the book by our March’s guest speaker where she shows how she takes a theme and then creates an im-
age that she places in a snowflake type of paper folding to create a wreath that she appliqués. The quilts she makes with these blocks inter-
spersed with traditional pieced blocks are quite beautiful and the book is a wonderful resource for our members that are lovers of appliqué (or
who like to dream about “someday I’m going to try that.”)
Create Your Own Free Form Quilts by Rayna Gillman. This is a perfect book for those who have an itch to do some sewing but don’t really
have a big project in mind. It shows a technique that takes scraps and ways to sew them together to make blocks that can be accumulated to
make some fascinating free looking quilts. I gave it a try and had a fun time in my sewing room for an hour with no pressure. I even ended up
with a block that I loved by just using leftovers.
Adventures in Design by Joen Wolfrom. This book is for those of you who really want to explore the concept of creating your own art quilt. It
has a variety of geometric as well as representational quilts to illustrate the principals of art. Any of you who have studied art will recognize the
content so it acts as a wonderful refresher of what you already know but as it relates to quilting. She also gives exercises to help you explore
your own creativity.
In addition to books that I purchased for the Guild, there are a few books that were donated that will fill some niches in our catalogue.
Quilting Curves by Vikki Pignatelli. As the name suggests, this book is all about sewing curves by machine so that there are no raw edges. This
information will definitely increase your flexibility when designing quilts whether they are representational or abstract in content.
Simply Amazing Spiral Quilts by RaNae Merrill. Again, for the designer who wants to push the envelope with spirals. The front cover design is
intimidating, but the book goes through the process of creating designs and then paper piecing and by the time you have read through it, you
begin to believe that you, too, can scare people with the complexity of your design. It looks challenging but in a fun and doable way.
Quilted Adventures By Sara Nephew. Another donation, this book creates charming pieced blocks of such things as fish, sailboats, trains, cars,
hot air balloons and more. Obviously, this is a super book for anyone considering a child’s quilt.
We appreciate any donations and those that won’t work in our library for one reason or another can still be sold to members. Thanks to all
who have donated.

I would l ike to update your gui ld on the IPM being hosted by Simcoe County in 2014. Many of you wi l l
a lready be aware of what the IPM is. For those who don’ t I wi l l g ive a l ittle background and how qu i lting
fits in .
The first IPM was held in 1913 at Sunnybrook Farm in Toronto (now Sunnybrook Hosp ita l ) . I t ran every
year ti l l 1941 and was postponed through the war years . In 1946 it resumed in Huron County and has
been going st rong ever s ince. This event br ings together both the Rura l and Urban communities from far
& wide and plays a very important ro le in keeping the r ich her itage and t raditions o f our past . This year
marks the 100th anniversary o f the IPM and it i s be ing hosted by Perth County. To get a l l o f the deta i l s
of the 2013 match, just Google IPM 2013 and you can get everything you might l ike to know.
In 2014 , S imcoe County i s hosting the 101st match. A long time part o f the IPM has been the “Qui l t
Tent” in the L i festy les area o f the Tented C ity . The tented c ity is a 100 acre park made on a farm for the
duration of the match. I t wi l l be held on the farm owned by Ivan & Barry Degeer in 2014. I t i s located
on the 20th s ide road, Essa Township, d irect ly across from the new “Essa Agr ip lex” (Barr ie Fa irgrounds) .
As the Simcoe Qu i l t , Rug and Craft Fair runs the same week as the match, rather than compete with each
other we fe lt i t was o f benefit to both events to move the Fa ir to the Match. The Qu i lt Tent in 2014 wi l l
be - “The S imcoe Qu i lt , Rug, and Craft Fai r” . We have the committees in p lace with the exper ience of
running the Fa ir and the Museum and County i s total ly supportive as the IPM is a County sponsored
event.
There wi l l sti l l be the “Show” portion of the Fa ir , where you can exhib it your qu i l ted creations. There wi l l
a l so be a Qu i lt Competition that i s a trad itiona l part o f the Qu i lt Tent at the match. I t wi l l be a choice to
enter your works in the competition categories or exh ib it your works in the show for viewing only .
Another tradition of the IPM Qui lt Tent i s a “Qui lt Block Cha l lenge”. Each year Northcott Fabrics from
Vaughan, Ontar io, donates fabr ic to the chal lenge and b lock k it s are made and sold as a fundra iser to
help with the costs o f running the Qui l t tent at the match. I am here today at your meeting to make you
aware of the IPM and to make avai lab le the “Qui lt Block Chal lenge” K it s . They sel l for $10.00 and a l l in -
st ructions are c lear ly stated in the package. On return ing your completed b lock, you wi l l receive a ticket
on the completed qui lt s and be entered into the “Viewer’s Choice” Judging o f the b locks. The winning
b locks wi l l receive a n ice cash pr ize, 1st -$100.00, 2nd - $75.00, 3rd - $50.00. The completed b locks
must be returned by September 30, 2013! We are p lanning an even ing event at the museum for the
“Viewer’s cho ice” judging and wi l l update you when final approvals are given.
Th is i s an exciting opportunity for the “Qui lters” and a l l Qui lt re lated businesses in S imcoe County to
show what a great “Qui lting” County we l ive in! I was very exc ited when I heard the Theme of the 2014
IPM - “Good Old Days – Modern New Ways”
Now can ’t that be re lated to our Qu i lting World? I real ly hope that you wi l l take the opportun ity to get
involved in any way you can, whether i t be to volunteer at the IPM (we wi l l need many! ) submit your
qui l ted creations in the competition or show, complete a b lock for the b lock chal lenge, or attend any of
the fundra is ing events pr ior to the match. Let ’ s make the 101st match a great opportunity to exhib it the
Qui lting and Qu i lters o f S imcoe County!!
