MESSAGE FROM THE POTENTATEIllustrious Sir, Gerry Massey

Lady Janet and I just got back in from the Pote’s Ball and we are absolutely exhausted! We had the best time this weekend, dancing, spending time

with old friends and we even made one or two new friends. We heard over and over how this year’s Ball was the first one many had ever attended, and we are honored you chose to make this year’s Ball your first and spend the weekend with us.

We have already had to re-order more pistachios and the sales look like they are going well. We encourage you to ask your unit or club leadership to participate in this program as it is just starting to take off and looks to be a great fundraiser for not only the Shrine, but the units and clubs as well. Don’t forget to keep track of who is selling the most bags! We are looking at a pretty nice reward for the highest individual seller by the end of the year!

March was a very busy month, but April looks like it is not going to give us much of a break in our schedule either. WSA, Mounted Patrol’s Spring Ride, Motorcycle Unit’s Antique show and Swap Meet, D-Backs game, Easter, Shrine Golf Classic and Temple Guard’s annual picnic (just to name a few) should keep your Divan pretty busy!

Finally, a quick note to our Ladies organizations. Lady Janet and I would like to congratulate LOS Past-High Priestess Dee Berkebile-Wright

and DON Past Queen Christena Weisman on their successful terms in their leadership roles. We would also like to congratulate the new High Priestess of Sphinx Court #65, Ladies Oriental Shrine, Gina Baird and Queen of Qadesh Temple #35, Daughters of the Nile, Betty Gough on their installations. We look forward to working with both of you and wish you the best in your terms.

Yours in the Faith,Gerry

THANKS FOR CARING ABOUT THE SHRINE!

The Program is QuiTe simPle...Nobles and Ladies,We are now enrolling many of you in the 365 Pay It Forward Team.Through your choice to join the team you are helping the future of the operations of El Zaribah Shriners and the work we do to serve our Hospitals and our Shrine Children. Donations from individuals and corporations to help the operations have been going down over the last several years. The other

programs we have in place and the actual fund raising events we have do continue to help the operations on a yearly basis. What we have been missing is the additional contributions that have made the overall operations run smoothly.

By choosing to enroll as a team member you are not only paying your dues forward for each year you are also giving an extra hand to El Zaribah Shriners. We have the proper accounts being set up and look forward to having you join the team.

Please see the flyers and sign up information available in the Red Fez Room, in the Shrine Office or from any Divan member. The initial signup is open until February 28, 2014. If you choose to sign up after that date please contact either George Mather 480-254-5328 or Phil Houghton 480-395-5237. They will help you with the process.

Shriners Hospital for Children in Salt Lake City, Utah is one of 22 hospitals operated by our fraternity. Shriners Hospital Salt Lake is a pediatric specialty hospital that has been providing

life changing care since 1925. It offers state- of-the art pediatric orthopaedic care for a wide range of diseases and disorders of the bones, muscles and joints. Children up to the age of 18 receive care in a family centered environment, regardless of ability to pay.

The hospital serves patients from Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona, plus the 2 Northern States of Mexico. The hospital sponsors several outreach clinics yearly, providing service throughout the region. The Salt Lake City hospital had over 13,000 visits, did 1,173 operations, and fitted 3,800 orthotics/prosthetics in 2013 and has an award winning Computerized Gait Analysis Lab.

Members of the medical staff are engaged in leading edge research into the treatment of spinal and joint disorders, and have introduced several treatment regimens worldwide. All of the physicians at Salt Lake are members of the faculty at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Additionally the hospital provides clinical rotations to multiple allied health (Physical Therapy, Recreation Therapy, Nursing and Pharmacy) students yearly.

It is an honor to serve El Zaribah and its nobility as a member of the Salt Lake City Hospital Board of Governors.

Arabian TalesVolume 32 – Issue #4Hospitals

When Taylor Hall, 22, of Moorhead, Ky., became a member of El Hasa

Shriners in March of 2011, it was a moment he had been looking forward to for many years.

“Shriners are great people to be around because they want to help children and have fun,” said Taylor. “I couldn’t wait to become one of them.”

Taylor was born with spina bifida, a condition that involves the incomplete development of the spinal cord or its coverings. Taylor has been a patient at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Lexington since he was 3 months old. The expert care Taylor received from the health care system not only helped Taylor improve physically, but emotionally as well.

“The doctors and nurses always made me feel special and that I was part of their family, said Taylor. “I almost didn’t feel like I was at a hospital.”

One moment that stands out for Taylor was attending “Camp Beelieve.” The annual one-week camp is an opportunity for patients with spina bifida from Shriners Hospitals for Children — Lexington to go on field trips to movies, restaurants or amusement parks.

“Whenever my mom came to get me after camp was over, I never wanted to leave,” said Taylor. “I’ll never forget all the friendships I made with the other campers, counselors and the nursing staff.”

The camp had such a positive impact on Taylor’s life he wanted to make sure future patients would have the same opportunity. For the past few years, Taylor has made it a goal to raise money for the camp program.

“Being a Shriner has been a great experience because I now have hundreds of brothers who want to help and support me,” said Taylor.

Three of those Shriners are Taylor’s older brothers, Don Jr. and Joey, and his father, Don Sr. Since becoming a member of El Hasa Shriners in 1991, Don Sr. has been very involved with the fraternity. He is a Past Potentate of his temple.

“I really did not know too much about the fraternity until Taylor was a patient at the Lexington Shriners Hospital and I saw first-hand how devoted Shriners are to helping children,” said Don Sr. “I’ve enjoyed every moment and to be able to share the experience with three of my sons has made it even more special.”

Just like his father, Taylor is extremely active within his temple. He enjoys the camaraderie and the opportunities to participate in fundraising events for the health care system.

“Being a Shriner is a chance for me to continue helping my favorite hospital,” said Taylor. “I’m very excited about all the possibilities the fraternity offers.”

While it doesn’t really apply to the Hospital Office, I would like to thank all of those who participated in the Super Kids Days for the Scottsdale School System. We had three motorcycles, four

little cars, two Greeter mobiles, a four wheeler, a clown and a number of Shriners and Ladies helping out. There were hundreds of kids and they had a blast climbing all over our vehicles and pretending like they were on the race track. Even the mascots from the Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona Cardinals, Phoenix Coyotes and the Phoenix Suns got into the game. I’m not sure who had more fun; the kids or all of us watching the big smiles on the kids.

2014 Parade Information

Out & About

This year, J C Reece and Randy Peters have been working to get our newest Nobles introduced to our Shrine Family through our parades.

We have made contact with all the parade Units and Clubs who occasionally have trouble getting members to attend parades. Because of attendance, many Units and Clubs have little cars that do not get driven. Members who could be marching or playing an instrument are instead driving a truck that pulls a trailer. In some instances, nobody has been there to handle the camels so they have had to stay home. These are a few examples of problems we have had.

We are now in contact with the parade groups to find out if they have cars that will not be driven, trucks that pull trailers that need a driver, help with camels, etc. Then, we contact the new Nobles.

We also ask all new Nobles to sign up for the El Zaribah WebNet Google Group (left side of el-zaribah.org) for event notification. When they are available they need to contact the Oriental Guide or the High Priest & Prophet. All who can help us out, are assigned to a Unit or Club.

This has been working since the Tempe Veteran’s Day parade last November. We have had up to 6 empty parade positions in the past few months that we have filled with new Nobles.

It is working well. We not only help the Unit or Club get a full roster, but the new Nobles meet and get to know many of the Nobles in the Units and Clubs. This is not a recruiting tool, but a way for new Nobles to get an idea of what each group is about and help utilize our parade attractions.

If you are a new Noble to El Zaribah, and would like to help us out and allow our Units and Clubs to utilize all of their parade equipment, cars, animals, etc. please contact J C Reece (Oriental Guide) 602-531-6545 or Randy Peters (High Priest & Prophet) 480-296-3957 .

Clown UnitThere are some that may be

wondering what it takes to be a clown or if they have “The Right Stuff”. Well, talk to one of us and find out. There are many of you

out there who have felt joy in making others smile or laugh. The Clowns are always looking for members and will train you in the art of clowning. Join us for some fun. We’ll be looking for you.

For all current Clowns... Do you have an interest in building a new parade prop? Do you want to try and design a new clown face for a new character for yourself? If you say yes to any of these questions or want to find out more about clowning, please send me an email and we’ll schedule a clown class at our next meeting. I am here for you, but I have to know what is on your mind. Bill “U-Hoo” EnloeClown President 2014

Culinary UnitThe Culinary Unit has been busy

over the last month. Somebody raised the Pote’s desk to new heights using concrete blocks under his office furniture. Quite an improvement!

Our new “Mascot,” is Anthony, Bob Lute’s eight-year-old grandson, who passed his Food Handlers test with a perfect score and is very proud to have assisted with the last two stated meetings’ dinners. If you meet him at one of our upcoming dinners, notice his card hanging from his neck and congratulate him. He is as proud as we are to have him join us behind the line.

Well, that is all of the news from behind the line for this month. Hope I have piqued your interest in joining our Unit. Remember it is always safer to be on our side!!Ken Conner, Scribe

El Dulabs UnitWanted: Fun loving Nobles who

love Automobiles.El Dulabs has openings for

Nobles who like to have fun, like automobiles, and like to be in parades. El Dulabs help our Temple by providing rides for parade participants at the request of the Potentate.

We use convertibles and Desert Chariots to haul the Divan and dignitaries. Ownership of a parade vehicle is not required to be a member.

Hurry... membership is limited to the first 500 Nobles!

Rick Fasano, President

Greeters UnitSeveral of us weathered the

parade in Chandler. It was sort of dry during the parade but the Ostrich Festival soon turned

to a Festival for Ducks. Ted Brownell has volunteered to head up a

fundraiser. It will be a Fishing Contest sometime in June. We will be joined by legendary football coach, Frank Kush, who will offer fishing lessons with his own, unique style, and flair. There will be contests, prizes, and awards. Additional details will follow as soon as they are discovered.

Like the Marines, we’re always looking for a few good men.Ellis (Nick) Nichols 1st VP

Legion of Honor UnitWe had a great Joint OV with the

Mobile Nobles and was one of our high social points of the year.

Parade activity is underway. We participated in the Wickenburg,

Apache Junction, and Chandler parades. We are indebted to LOH member and Oriental Guide J C Reece for providing the trailer towing vehicle. He gets an “Atta Shriner” from us.

The Legion of Honor Unit consists of Nobles who have served Honorably or are currently members of the armed forces of their country. It’s an Honor to belong to the Legion of Honor Unit. You served your country and now have the opportunity to serve the Shrine and have fun at the same time. We lead the El Zaribah Shrine Parades, present the “Colors” at Stated Meeting, and various other functions as requested by the Illustrious Sir.

Eligible Nobles and their Ladies are invited to check us out.Scribe - PC / Adj. /Fin. Officer - Virgil Johnston

Motorcycle UnitWhat a great time of the year

it is. We are right in the midst of parade season. Lots of time people will walk by as we are

waiting and talk to us about the Shrine. Some say they have seen us in parades, have heard about our hospitals and like what we do. Others have said they were Shrine kids and that is the most heartwarming. I know that on the ride home I have more of a smile on my face than when I left. Parade days are good days.

As I write this column we have just returned from the Chandler parade and the rain gods did not rain on our parade. Jim Moulder and Tom Ritter rode home, however, through heavy rain and tell me they have invented a new riding position called NOW nose on windshield.

Be safe and watch for that driver talking on the phone who is about to turn in front of you.

Mounted Patrol Unit Howdy Y’all. Greetings and best

wishes to you and yours from all of us in the Mounted Patrol. We had 3 riders at the Wickenburg parade; Capt. Phil, Al McDonald, and our super 1st

Lt. Shorty. We also had three ground support, Denise Thompson, Rosie Summers, and me, Fat Boy Nate. We were there ready to help the riders and provide refreshments.

It was a sad thing to lose Larry Kesselring, as he was a friend of our Unit and even rode with us on a few occasions. We send our prayers to the loved ones left behind. Keep the faith and please stay in touch with your friends in the Mounted Patrol.

All members please make all the meetings and functions you can.

Giddy up team and Vaya Con Dios

Patrol UnitFebruary was busy. We

participated in the Yuma, Buckeye, Wickenburg, Apache Junction, and

Chandler Parades. Our annual carport sale this year was held

at Fred and Lil Rogers’ house and was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who contributed to, helped with, and bought stuff at the two day sale. It was a lot of hard work but also a lot fun.

To all the new and recently initiated Nobles, we hope you consider joining the Patrol Unit.

We are very active and have a lot of fun. We also supply those cool uniforms that you see us wearing. So check us out. We get together

with our Ladies in the Red Fez Room for dinner prior to our monthly meeting.Capt. Ken

Transportation UnitWe are heavy into the parade season.

Our little trucks have appeared at all of the Temple parades with some fresh vehicles and some new drivers. Jim and Phil took the trucks to Shepherd of

the Valley Pre School for a transportation day presentation. It was a great way to give back to the community and support the development of our community youth.

We have plans to travel to Yarnell to support their initial parade since the fire disaster. This will give us an opportunity to support a community that has suffered a tremendous tragedy. We invite you to join us.

The Transportation Unit continues to make donations to the various funds at the Temple. Most of these donations come courtesy of Galpin Ford and we are proud to carry their name on the side of one of our trucks. They are great Shrine Supporters and we thank them for what they do.

Mobile Nobles Shrine ClubWow!! Where did the winter go? By

the time you read this a good many of our Mobile Nobles, who live up north, will be leaving or getting ready to leave for home. We have had a great year

with attendance at our meetings being very good and a lot more interest in members being involved with the club.

The Nobles working the aluminum can project report that the revenue is about the same as last year so a big thank you goes out to all of those workers.

Our OV/Dinner Dance co sponsored with the LOH was a huge success with many favorable reports that everyone had a great time. Thanks

to all of you who helped with the set up and the clean up after the dance.

Have a safe and healthy summer and we will see you in the fall.

in February and it was well attended by our Provost Officers. Illustrious Sir Gerry Massey and his Lady Janet were

our guests of honor and have some great ideas so let’s support their goals. At the OV we also honored Provost Dave McKelvey for being selected the Provost of the year for 2013.

Whie Mountain Shrine ClubThe White Mountain Shrine Club

promoted the Shrine Burn Awareness Month with the aid of the Linden Fire Department (a suburb of Show Low)

and visited three grade schools. We distributed the Shrine Burn Awareness workbooks to approximately 400 students. The kids got to look at the fire truck, climb inside of it, talk about fire issues with the firefighters, and even wear the Shriner Fez. A great time was had by all.

We will be joining the Show Low, Pinetop, and Lakeside Fire Departments at their October Fire Prevention Fair to distribute additional Burn Awareness workbooks and talk to the kids.

Most of the club members are off the mountain but we will start our meetings in March. The new meeting place will be the Porter Mt. Steakhouse on Porter Mt. Rd. in Pinetop.

Yuma Shrine ClubWell, the snowbirds are back up

north. The fair has come and gone and thanks to all who helped. Now we can rest for a while. The Prescott Valley

parade is coming up. We hope you all will welcome our new Noble, David McHone. He has already gotten a parade truck so hopefully we will see him at the parades.

We have a few Nobles looking for parade vehicles, so if you hear of one let me know (928-210-8404) and I’ll pass the message on.

Again THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. We can’t do it by ourselves. If we work together there is nothing that can’t be done. We hope to see you in Prescott Valley. Dale
