Council is sponsoring a workshop,
“Ge�ng Started with the Cultural
Data Project”, at the SMAC office
in Marshall on April 16, from 7:00
– 8:30 pm.
We strongly encourage all SMAC-region arts organiza�ons to
a�end this workshop, presented by Cultural Data Project
(CDP) staff, to learn about how to enroll in the project. At
some point in the near future, arts organiza2ons may be
required be enrolled in CDP in order to qualify for SMAC
grants. Having created a CDP profile will also be helpful if
you’re planning to a8end the Nonprofits Assistance Fund
financial training on May 21.
SMAC will provide mileage reimbursement to a8endees from
arts organiza2ons in the 18 coun2es of Southwest Minnesota.

On May 21, Nonprofits Assistance
Fund (NAF) is coming to the
SMAC region to offer special
financial training for arts
organiza2ons!
Through funding from the MN State Arts Board,
NAF is able to provide training on financial
assessment and planning for arts organiza2ons,
including addi2onal informa2on about
fundamental nonprofit financial topics. Thank
you to all the arts organiza2ons who took 2me
to fill out a survey about their specific needs for
this workshop, which is now able to be tailored
to SMAC-region organiza2ons.
The training will be held on May 21 from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm
at the Marshall-Lyon County Library. SMAC will provide
mileage reimbursement and lunch to arts organiza2on
representa2ves from within the SMAC 18-county region.

Here are just some of the opportuni2es and ac2vi2es
planned for the weekend:
• Bobbie Alsgaard-Lien, a painter from Rushmore, will
guide you through a fun, hands-on pain2ng ac2vity.
• Saara Myrene Raappana, a Pushcart Prize-
nominated poet from Marshall, will show you how
to set your wri2ng free by using form techniques.
• Kelley Nemitz of 360 Design House in Canby will talk
about how to start a website to feature your
artwork.

What is the Cultural Data Project?
Once per year, arts and cultural organiza2ons enter
financial, programma2c, and opera2onal data into
CDP’s online form, and can then produce a variety of
reports designed to help increase management
capacity, iden2fy strengths and challenges, and inform
decision-making. They can also generate reports to be
included as part of the applica2on processes to
par2cipa2ng grantmakers.
An emerging na2onal standard, the CDP also
empowers researchers and advocates with informa2on
to make the case for arts and culture, and equips
funders with data to plan and evaluate grant-making
ac2vi2es more effec2vely.
Ge4ng Started with the Cultural Data Project - New
User Orienta�on
In this introductory session, we'll discuss how
consistent data collec2on can help your organiza2on
make decisions, plan for the future, and build
convincing cases to stakeholders.
Our new user orienta2on will also provide an overview
of working with the CDP, including:
• Registering your organiza2on
• Naviga2ng the CDP website
• Entering your organiza2on's data into a CDP
Data Profile
Designed with first-2me users of the CDP in mind, this
session will also provide 2ps on how to help your
organiza2on get the most out of the CDP through our
useful repor2ng tools and other resources.

The Toulouse-Lautrec
collec2on is housed at the
Herakleidon Museum in
Athens Greece and has
traveled outside of Europe
for the first 2me — a once in a life2me opportunity to see
this collec2on in the United States.
At the center of this exhibi2on is a rare collec2on of
approximately 150 works on paper by Toulouse-Lautrec.
Many of the works are accompanied by appropriate
passages from French literature, photographs, and other
objects, in order to be8er capture the social atmosphere of

Financial Assessment and Planning for Arts Organiza�ons
As an arts organiza2on, you know that financial assessment and planning is at its best when you have the most relevant
informa2on to aid your decision-making. It is important to know which tools will help you get a handle on your
organiza2on's current financial situa2on and how to use that informa2on to plan for the future. At this interac2ve training
designed specifically for small arts organiza2ons, Nonprofits Assistance Fund will teach you to:
• Use trends to get a picture of your organiza2on's future
• Develop annual and mul2-year budgets with planning in mind
• Recognize the components of business models in your organiza2on and how they work together
• Communicate your financial posi2on in a way that accurately tells your organiza2on's story
This training will u2lize reports from the Cultural Data Project (CDP) to demonstrate these financial concepts. If you are
currently par2cipa2ng in CDP, you are strongly encouraged to bring your own organiza2on's reports from CDP, including
trend reports, comparison reports, and the Financial Health Assessment . If your organiza2on is not currently par2cipa2ng
in CDP, a8end the “Ge�ng Started with the Cultural Data Project” workshop at the SMAC office in Marshall on April 16,
from 7:00 – 8:30 pm.

how their projects turned out.
• Anna Metcalfe from Springboard for the Arts will present “Legal
Considera2ons for Ar2sts”. Learn about copyrights and contract basics
regarding selling and licensing your work, as well as ge�ng into
business.
• Sam Hathaway, actor (“Sweetland”), director and producer (“Once
Upon A Whitsun”) from Montevideo and Dana Johnson, director and
producer from Appleton will speak about their real world experience of
filmmaking in SW Minnesota.
• Charlene Buescher, a watercolor ar2st from Hendricks, will teach “Watercolor for Everyone”, focusing on the following
techniques: wet in wet, dry brush, super-imposed layering, and nega2ve and posi2ve spaces.
• Get your ques2ons about the SMAC grant process answered by a panel of previous applicants and staff from SMAC and
the MN State Arts Board.
• “Prairie Lotus” from Walnut Grove will give a performance of Hmong
tradi2onal dance.
• Andrew & Lisa Bergh, ar2sts from New London will introduce, “The
Traveling Museum Visits Danebod”, a collabora2ve art project for
everyone to work on as they have 2me throughout the day.
The cost of the retreat is just $15 for a full day of workshops, networking
