The Man Who Brings Southeastern Antique &

Collectible Lovers Together in PersonWork began early in 1981 as the

clearing started on 100 acres on theOld Hwy 421 Road in Liberty.

Only thousands of rocks lay aheadwhen the key of the tractor’s turnedand the first of a whole bucket loadsof rock began to fill.

Vito and Mary Sinco had no ideathat the burden of the first rock wouldbe easy in comparison to the ton ofpaperwork that laid ahead for the next35 years to help thousands of smallantique dealers to sell their wares inan environment of the highest qualityon the East Coast.

As the dealers grew, so theattendance one, two, three, five, andlater ten thousand. More employeesfor parking food service lodging issurrounding areas. Which meant jobs, jobs, and more jobs.

Non believers just could not stayhome and joined in the celebration ofthe excitement of the Liberty AntiquesFestival.

When I sat in Vito’s modestcommand center, all I could think ofwas how much he had done for NorthCarolina, small businesses, and thesubsequent increasing of visitation to

our state’s Zoo.Liberty is small

but magical asRhonda Murray ofBarn Art and OleTime HardwareStore that takes youback in time.

As I had lunchwith Bob Moweryafter I met Vito, wetalked about the organic event thatalways coincides with the LibertyAntique Festival – the run up of mile-to-mile yard sales that line the highwayto Liberty in Randolph County.Places in town like the Ya’ll ComeBack restaurant and Chef Mark andPamela Rutzen’s Smokehouse Bistroare always glad to see folks drive into their small community to sell andbuy treasures. The conversation soonturned to deep inventory for thePickers, Pedals, Passions, & Blundersand the future possibility of brick-n-mortar stores.

Yes, Liberty is a special place andas this semi-annual event grows in thefuture, who knows?! Maybe the smalltown of Liberty will give a good shot

at topping theGuinness WorldRecord ofRecords when

it comes to the longest yard salerecorded!

Remember that as-tronaut who sangDavid Bowie's"Space Oddity" onthe InternationalSpace Station? ChrisHadfield is makingheadlines again—orrather, his flight suit is.Somehow the blueoutfit ended up in aToronto thrift store,CBC reports.

"I thought, wow, what is a flight suit likethat doing up there?"says Dr. JulielynnWong. When she saw the "ChrisHadfield" badge on the jumpsuit, "Myjaw just dropped," she says.

She bought the suit for a mere $40.To make the find even more incred-ible, Wong, who studied space medi-cine, actually knows Hadfield, ABCNews reports: "I trained with him; weactually had lunch," she says.

She contacted him on Facebookand was able to confirm the suit'sidentity with a photo and some de-tailed information. So how did it end

up in a thrift store? The former ISScommander himself doesn't know, telling Wong it's "a mystery to me."He's "had many flight suits over theyears," Wong tells ABC.

"It's possible that it inadvertentlygot placed in a donations bag whenhe moved back to Canada after liv-ing abroad for 20 years." Now, sheplans to use it in lectures she gives onspace supplies.

"This way, the flight suit is muchmore inspiring for the next generation

of space pioneers andinnovators," she says.(Click to watchHadfield's version of"Space Oddity.")

Go the Extra Mile for Your

Customer by Providing Them

Reference Material on Items

The man holding your creamwarebaby’s plate is frowning. The longerhe looks at that piece of pottery, thedeeper the frown becomes. He’shearing voices in hishead.

Once voice iscalling himunflattering names.“You idiot!” itscreams. “How couldyou have left theRoseville book athome? How are yougoing to decide if this unmarked pieceis really Roseville or just some well-made imitation?”

Note from Editor

This excellent excerpt is takendirectly from Don Johnson &Elizabeth A. Borland’s book SellingAntiques & Collectibles.

The other is a kinder, gentler voice.“Sure, the piece is Roseville,” itreassures him. “It looks like Roseville, feels like Rosevill. If it walked like a

duck and talks like aduck...”

The voices onlyconfuse him. He’llbuy the plate if he’ssure it’s Roseville. Buthe has no way ofdetermining whether itis. If only you had aRoseville book he

could borrow. But you don’t. Thepiece of creamware goes back into

your display. The sale goes down thedrain.

Providing reference material withyour displays is an excellent way toboost confidence and promotegoodwill. More than that, it cancreates sales. Your unmarkedcreamware might have been part of aRoseville juvenile set. That pottery-buying customer would have boughit if he had been able to verfiy itsmaker.

Customers will especiallyappreciate reference material if youspecialize in a specific type ofmerchandise.

Rebuilding My Beloved Foxfire Book Set

Renee Warren is theEditor of PickersPedals Passions &Blunders. She grewup around antiquesand collectibleswhile living in bothNC & SC but justwishes she had paid more attention toher grandmothers about their love of an-tiques and collectibles. Her favorite cat-egory is anything Asian or Oriental.

In one of the last issues nearly fiveyears ago, I wrote a small piecefeaturing a very unique set ofinstructional manuals that comprisewhat is known to Deep South nativesand residents as the Foxfire Series.

For those readers out thereunfamiliar with what started out as asimple high school class conceptended up becoming a huge successin the print world of recorded oralhistory of Appalachian natives, do

some researchinto this fantasticmust-have set ofbooks that reallyshed a lot of lighton the old waysof living.

I had a halfcomplete set avery long time agoand lost them alland several othertreasured booksin a move. So, Istarted rebuilding

my collection with some help fromother PPP&B staffers who gave meseveral books for gifts.

The reason I love these books somuch is 1. for historical value(tremendous!) and 2. one neverknows if/when one is knocked backinto the Stone Age by either a folly ofman or whim of the Universe.

By gosh, I know how to build afire without a match or lighter! I wasa Brownie and Girl Scout and those

life lessons that led to badges reallypaid off when it comes to survival ofhard times possibly to come.

I have fond memories of my greatgrandparents living in small ruralcommunities here in North Carolinaand so much of what is in these bookstotally resonated with me because itwas an accurate accounting of life insimpler times.

I highly recommend this bookseries for those out there who are intosurvival and prepper info, historicalinfo on daily living in Applachianmountains, and a whole different subculture living in deep hollers.

It’s Prom Season...Does Your Daughter Want to Wear

a Vintage Gown?Oh, the rites of Spring passage is

the yearly procession of formal dancesand proms that occur all across ournation.

Men, make no mistake about it,this is a seminal event in a youngwoman’s life and not some trivial gig.The dress is EVERYTHING!

So, your daughter has decided shewants to be different than the crowdand has expressed interest in wearingsomething ‘vintage.’ Parents, do notpanic. First you must establish withyour daughter what her definition of‘vintage’ is compared to yours. A

whole lot of scrappin’ and fightin’ canbe avoided by this first step.

Once everyone is on the same pageabout said dress, then it’s relativelyeasy to go shopping. In mostmetropolitan places, there is at leasta small handful of shops that carry oreven specialize in resale of vintageclothing. Often times, treasure trovesof vintage clothing can be had atEstate Sales and auctions.

Perhaps there is a female relativewho owns a vintage dress that iswilling to loan out in hope that newlife would be breathed into it.

There are shops online for thosewho have slim pickings in yourimmediate area. The photo below iscited from a cool website http://w w w . r u s t y z i p p e r. c o m /vintagedresses/prom/

And of course, for the moreadventurous of those out there willingto tackle sewing your daughter’sdress as a reproduction, there isalways a pattern out there for alltastes. And for those who can’tmanage to keep from sticking pins-n-needles in your fingers, there mightbe a talented tailor in your area.

Golf in the Great North State

North Carolina is a state known formany things but what stands out themost - our wonderful love of golf.

Our state is home to some of themost well known and best belovedgolf courses in the world. Many aplayer has passed through our grandstate swinging an iron or wood.

Perhaps NC’s long historyregarding this esteemed game is rootedin the fact so many settlers of this statewere the Scots and the Irish. Theybrought their love of the game to theNew World and indeed, set deep rootsdown in NC.

We wanted to tip our hat to oneof the sport passions that could onlyyield up jokes such as ‘the reasonwhy it took all day and all night toplay 18 holes is because of fact thatdragging dead partner (heart attack)around the golf course.’ ☺

Yeah, we’re pretty serious aboutour collegiate basketball AND ourgolf, folks.

As for me, even though I’m a bornand raised Tarheel with deep Scots-Irish roots, I never warmed to thegame of golf.

Don’t get me wrong! There is a

whole lot of Zen in knocking a tinyball into a small hole from a greatdistance.

But when someone hands me agolf club, I tend to do somethingcompletely different with it(remember, I am a martial artsteacher). ☺

- Renee WarrenA Brief History of the Golf ClubFrom blunt wooden instruments of the old days to today's adjustable, insanely high-tech drivers, golf clubs have been getting better and bettersince the Scots gave us this frustrating, exhilarating pastime.

960–1279: Royals from China'sSong Dynasty play chuiwan, hittingballs into holes with a set of 10 be-jeweled clubs.

1400s: Despite earlier evidence ofproto-golf in the Netherlands, Scot-land gets credit for inventing the game.

1800s: Par for the course, golfmakes its way to the United States.Players use 20 to 30 wooden clubs ofvarious functions to hit featheries, hardleather balls stuffed with feathers.

1856: America's hickory trees getthe shaft when Robert Forgan exportsthem to Scotland to make golf clubs.Harder persimmon wood is used forthe club heads until drop forging al-lows for mass-produced iron heads inthe late 1800s.

1931: Billy Burke becomes the firstgolfer to win the U.S. Open usingsteel-shafted clubs painted to look likewood. But there's no faking Burke's

unique grip—he only had three fin-gers on his left hand.

1932: Pro golfer Gene Sarazenthinks outside the sandbox to de-velop the modern sand wedge, anduses it in his British Open victory.

1939: Golf's rule-making author-ity decrees the use of no more than14 clubs in a round but puts no limitson dorky apparel.

1959: Engineer Karsten Solheiminvents a putter with more weight atthe heel and toe of the blade and athinner, lighter sweet spot. The noveldesign makes it easier for golfers tohit the ball straight. He quits his dayjob, creates the golf-equipmentbrand Ping, and makes a fortune.

1971: Alan Shepard takes onesmall swing for a man, one giant drivefor mankind when he hits two golfballs on the moon at the end of the

Apollo 14 mission. The second trav-els over a mile.

1973: Lightweight graphite-shaftclubs become popular among womenand senior golfers. The rest of theworld

—ahem, PGA Tour players—catches on by the mid-1990s.

1980: In Caddyshack, RodneyDangerfield's character stocks his bagwith a driver that dispenses beer.

1991: Callaway rocks the golfworld when it introduces the Big Ber-tha stainless-steel-headed driver. Per-simmon-headed clubs quickly be-come garage-cluttering relics.

2013: TaylorMade's R1 driveradjusts to 12 different lofts and sevendifferent face angles, adapting the clubto playing conditions. Isn't thatcheating?

Passions....

The History of Golf, as per WikipediaOriginsA golf-like game is,

apocryphally,[1][2] recorded astaking place on 26 February 1297,in Loenen aan de Vecht, where theDutch played a game with a stick andleather ball. The winner was whoeverhit the ball with the least number ofstrokes into a target several hundredyards away. Some scholars argue thatthis game of putting a small ball in ahole in the ground using golf clubs wasalso played in 17th-centuryNetherlands and that this predates thegame in Scotland. There are alsoother reports of earlier accounts of agolf-like game from continentalEurope.[3]

In the 1261 Middle-Dutchmanuscript of the Flemish poet Jacobvan Maerlant's Boeck Merlijn mentionis made of a ball game "mit enercoluen" (with a colf/kolf [club]). Thisis the earliest known mention in theDutch language of the game of colf/kolf as played in the LowCountries.[4][5]

In 1360, the council of Brusselsbanned the game of colf:“... wie met colven tsoltes om twintich scell’ oftop hare overste cleet ...”(he who plays at colfpays a fine of 20 shillingsor his overcoat will beconfiscated).[6]

In 1387, the regent of the countyof Holland, Zeeland and Hainaut,Albrecht of Bavaria, sealed a charterfor the city of Brielle, in which it wasforbidden to play any game formoney. One of the exceptions to thisordinance was “den bal mitter colvente slaen buten der veste” (to play the

ball with a club outside the townwalls).[7] Two years later, in 1389,the regent Albrecht offered the citizensof Haarlem a field called ‘De Baen’(the course) to be used exclusively forplaying games – especially colf –because these were too dangerouswithin the city walls.[8]

In 1597 the crew of WillemBarentsz played "colf" during theirstay at Nova Zembla, as recorded byGerrit de Veer in his diary:

Den 3. April wast moy claerweder met een n.o. wint ende stil, doenmaeckten wy een colf toe om daermede te colven, om also onse ledenwat radder te maecken, daer wyallerley middelen toe zochten.[9]

(The 3rd of April the weatherwas nice and clear with a north-easterly wind and quiet, then we madea colf [club] to play colf with, and thusmake our limbs more loose, for whichwe sought every means)

Early golf in ScotlandThe modern game of golf is

generally considered to be a Scottishinvention. Aspokesman for theRoyal and Ancient GolfClub of St. Andrews, one of the oldestScottish golf

organisations, said "Stick and ballgames have been around for manycenturies, but golf as we know ittoday, played over 18 holes, clearlyoriginated in Scotland."[10][11] Theword golf, or in Scots gowf [g?uf], isusually thought to be a Scots alterationof Dutch "colf" or "colve" meaning"stick, "club", "bat", itself related tothe Proto-Germanic language *kulth-

as found in Old Norse kolfr meaning"bell clapper", and the GermanKolben meaning "mace or club".[12]The Dutch term Kolven refers to arelated sport.

The first documented mention ofgolf in Scotland appears in a 1457Act of the Scottish Parliament, anedict issued by King James II ofScotland prohibiting the playing of thegames of gowf and football as thesewere a distraction from archerypractice for military purposes. [13]Bans were again imposed in Acts of1471 and 1491, with golf beingdescribed as "an unprofitable sport".Mary, Queen of Scots was accusedby her political enemies of playing golfafter her second husband, HenryStuart, Lord Darnley, was murderedin 1567. George Buchanansubsequently wrote that she had beenplaying "sports that were clearlyunsuitable to women". Golf wasbanned again by parliament underKing James IV of Scotland, but golfclubs and balls were bought for himin 1502 when he was visiting Perth, and on subsequent occasions whenhe was in St Andrews andEdinburgh.[14]

An entry in the Town CouncilMinutes of Edinburgh for 19 April1592 includes golf in a list of pursuitsto be avoided on the Sabbath.[15]

The account book of lawyer SirJohn Foulis of Ravelston records thathe played golf at Musselburgh Linkson 2 March 1672, and this has beenaccepted as proving that The OldLinks, Musselburgh, is the oldestplaying golf course in the world. There is also a story that Mary, Queenof Scots, played there in1567.[16][17]
