A NEW LEADERSHIP PROGRAM IS COMING TO THE KEWEENAW!!! That’s right! The Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce is starting a new Leadership Program with the help of business and community member’s support! We will be taking applications from companies who would like to send a key employee(s) and individuals who would like to participate in this great new program which will create new, engaged leaders in our community! More information will be coming if you are interested in supporting or attending the program, please contact the Chamber office.

Also, GREAT NEWS!!! We have been selected as the host site for the Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities Conference! The Chamber submitted Houghton/Hancock as the host sites on our application this winter and we were notified in early February that we were selected! This is a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with many organizations, communities, businesses and those interested in an entrepreneurial communities success and growth. This is the first time the program will be in the U.P.! We hope practitioners (community leaders, stakeholders, colleagues, and coworkers) whether working in economic development, arts and culture, government, philanthropy, nonprofit or education attend. LEARN, SHARE, EMPOWER, GROW… “We all have a part to play in supporting local businesses and entrepreneur development in our communities.” SAVE THE DATE: Wednesday, October 7 and Thursday, October 8, 2015!

We are actively engaged in the community and collaborating on projects to strengthen the area. The Chamber has proposed a Regional Chamber Alliance with other Western U.P. Chambers of Commerce and are meeting for further collaboration in all six counties (Houghton/Keweenaw, Baraga, Ontonagon, Gogebic and Iron). We are working together to have a stronger voice in business advocacy.

We are also working with Connect Michigan and WUPPDR to address Broadband concerns in the area, we would like to thank our business members and others for taking the Broadband Survey. We collaborated with many partners in the State of Michigan to address the service needs of the Upper Peninsula by encouraging the collocation on Michigan public safety communications system to provide service in a service needs area. We hope over the coming months to continue making progress on service for the community.

We have been busy strengthening the core programs of the Chamber of Commerce. I would like to encourage all of our Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce members to reach out to other businesses to join and support the areas business community. We welcome Chamber members to be actively engaged in recently identified volunteer opportunities. We would love to engage some retired business people in the community as well. The more involvement and engagement, the more exciting opportunities “Your Chamber” can provide. Please contact the Chamber office to volunteer your time and further support “Your Chamber” – great things happen, when we all come together!

Safe & Reliable Electricity

Customer Service

Proud Community Supporter

Our roots run deep in the Keweenaw, going back to 1884, just five

years after Edison’s incandescent bulb put electricity at the fingertips

of people. That year, Peninsula Electric Light and Power Company

was organized in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Because Peninsula

Electric Light and Power was our original predecessor, you might say

UPPCO grew up with the electric utility industry. From the Edison

bulb to high-tech electronics, our company has been providing energy

to the area and U.P. for more than 100 years.

While trying to minimize traffic impacts by scheduling closures at night, these closures may impact public transit, school athletic schedules or other activities. The Michigan Department of Transportation has sent the Chamber a PDF document to provide some initial information about the upcoming Portage Lake Lift Bridge rehabilitation project. If you would like the document emailed or mailed to you please contact the Chamber. Phone 482.5240 or email: [email protected].

Construction of the new Aspirus Keweenaw

Hospital in Laurium is right on track with phase one

set for completion in July.

The 34,000 sq. ft. project includes a new

emergency center, ICU and medical/surgical unit.

The emergency center will have expanded trauma,

procedure and exam rooms, in addition to a drive-

under canopy at the entrance for patient drop-off.

There will be new in-patient hospital rooms,

including eight new pre- and post-surgical recovery

suites, and upgraded technology and

communication systems.

Designed with patients and visitors in mind, the

new hospital brings increased privacy, efficiency and

flow.

“The project is right on track and will live up to its

promise of bringing an incredibly functional, cost-

effective and efficient health care facility that is best

suited for the care of our community,” said Chuck

Nelson, Aspirus U.P. Regional CEO. “All in all, we are

giving an already great medical team and the

community a world-class facility we can all be proud

of.”

Miron Construction Co. broke ground on the

three-phase project July 21, 2014. Phase one includes

all new space. New pre- and post-surgical suites will

be completed during phase two. Phase three

includes new conference rooms, blood draw and an

entryway to registration. Target completion is

spring 2016.

Miron hired more than 15 local sub-contractors,

from plumbing and electrical to excavating and

roofing. Project Superintendent and Lake Linden

resident, John Griffin said Miron Construction is

recognized nationally for building excellence.

including the Aspirus Houghton Clinic that opened in

June of 2014,” Griffin said. “Miron brings the

expertise, and the quality of their work is top-

notch.”

The new Keweenaw hospital is one of many

exciting events taking place at Aspirus in recent

months. Aspirus Keweenaw received two significant

awards and implemented a state-of-the-art medical

records system. Aspirus Keweenaw received the

2014 Governor’s Award of Excellence for significant

achievements in health care quality, and was named

one of America’s Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals by

the iVantage Strength INDEX.

Construction progress continues with the installation of frames and

windows on the new hospital.

Dianda Wants DNR to Acquire Land Around Houghton-Douglass FallsTallest Michigan falls are must-see, but on private land

State Representative Scott Dianda (D-Calumet) today introduced House Resolution 38 urging the Michigan

Department of Natural Resources to acquire the land surrounding the Houghton-Douglass Falls in the Keweenaw

Peninsula. The falls are on Hammell Creek on private land.

“Tourism is significant part of the U.P. economy. It’s just common sense for the DNR to step in and acquire this land so

people know where our most stunning waterfalls are and can hike to them safely.

While recently updating their recreation plan, Houghton County officials found much public support for public

acquisition of these lands. The falls consist of several streams bouncing off sharp, volcanic rock. The view from the top

is of Torch Lake in the valley below. The 63 acres surrounding the waterfalls border state-owned rail trails and state

highway M-26. Many guides list it as a “must-see” attraction, but visitors are technically trespassing when they make

the hike in search of the falls.

“Houghton-Douglass Falls are the tallest in Michigan, but I bet right now there are people who drive by every day on M-

26 and don’t even know that they’re there.” said Dianda. “People plan whole vacations around seeing the waterfalls in

our area. I hope we can all come together to support a strategic DNR acquisition that will ensure greater public

access.”

2015 Placemaking Strategy Development Workshop

The MIplace Partnership Initiative is a statewide initiative that has Michigan at the forefront of a national movement known as placemaking. It’s a simple concept. Communities that offer a high quality of life and amenities that are important to talented workers can be very competitive in the global economy. Communities that don’t have these features and do not enjoy these economic benefits can create them through a process called placemaking.

The intended audience is city council and township boards; local, county and regional staff; county and planning commissioners; and key developers and community members. Communities will need multiple participants to maximize synergy and benefit for the community.

Placemaking as an economic development tool concept that is sweeping Michigan, the nation, and the world. Don’t be left behind. Be in the know! There will likely not be a more affordable (free) opportunity to ready your community to capture future, limited resources.

The event in Hancock will be on May 28th at Lakeview Manor, 1401 Quincy Street, Hancock.

While RSVP’s are required for this event, the workshops are free of charge. Please RSVP at least one week prior to each workshop.http://web2.msue.msu.edu/events/admin/eventdata/placemakingstrategy/2015PMBlitzWkshps_StatewideFlyer_022015.pdf

Houghton County Poised to Save Energy, Money . . .

and Win $5 MillionFree/Low-Cost Programs Help Businesses Cut Energy Costs

Every month when they open their utility bills, businesses and residents throughout Houghton County get a

rude reminder of the region’s high energy costs. Now a group of volunteers has banded together to lower

those bills--and maybe win the county a multi-million-dollar prize.

Houghton County is one of 50 semifinalists for the Georgetown University Energy Prize, which challenges

communities across the US to reduce energy consumption. The winner receives $5 million to pursue energy-

saving initiatives.

The Houghton Energy Efficiency Team, or HEET, is working with utilities and other groups to boost ongoing

energy conservation efforts. Here are several free and low-cost resources to help area businesses cut their

energy bills.

Michigan Retired Engineer Technical Assistance Program

MI-RETAP’s teams of retired engineers conduct free, confidential energy- and waste-reduction assessments.

Over 1,300 businesses (including manufacturers) have used this service, with cost savings averaging more

than $45,000. See www.michigan.gov/retap or contact David Herb at 517-284-6863.

Michigan Saves!

This a nonprofit offers financing up to $250,000 for a variety of energy upgrades, including lighting, HVAC,

food service equipment and more. The financing is structured so the energy savings are equal to or greater

than the business' payments. See http://michigansaves.org/business or contact Todd O’Grady at 248-701-

3058.

Efficiency United for UPPCO and SEMCO customers

Efficiency United’s Commercial and Industrial Program includes the following:

● The Prescriptive program provides incentives for replacing old systems with high-efficiency lighting, HVAC and agricultural equipment.

● The Custom Program provides rebates for the installation of innovative and unique energy efficient equipment.

● The Continuous Improvement Programs gives customers up to $5,000 in cash incentives to become more energy efficient.
