Forget It and Drive On — Anger Management for MotoristsWhen mobility turns to mayhem on the road

Driving is a remarkably revealing prism for how our minds work and the ways we interact with others. Aggressive driving—intentional, dangerous behavior that jeopardizes the safety of everyone—is a serious problem on America's roads. It's a factor in up to 56 percent of fatal crashes, according to data from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Less common—but far more dangerous—is road rage, deliberate, uncontrolled anger that sometimes leads to violence and death.

While aggressive driving can be frightening and often violates traffic laws, road rage is a crime. Consequences can include fines, suspension of your driver's license, and imprisonment.

Robert Ingersoll, the noted 19th century orator, once said “anger blows out the lamp of the mind.” What aggressive driving and road rage both have in common is that they're unpredictable can be ignited quickly and can occur at any time. The AAA Foundation study found that events precipitating violent outbursts are often remarkably trivial.

Violent traffic disputes are rarely the result of a single incident, but rather the cumulative effect of a variety of stress factors. The traffic episode that turns ugly is often “the last straw” for someone who is having a very bad day. Everyday annoyances, such as stealing a parking space, cutting off another motorist, tailgating, and failure to use turn signals are common triggers.

The pressures of sitting in traffic, or being cooped up in your car can turn even the most mild-mannered motorist into the road warrior. A poll by the Washington Post found the number of drivers who admitted to feeling “uncontrollable anger toward another driver” doubled between 2005 and 2013. So, what should we do to avoid road rage in others, and in ourselves?

When you merge into traffic, make sure you have plenty of room to enter traffic without cutting someone off. If someone cuts you off, take the high road and give them plenty of room.

When someone wants to pass, be courteous—move over and let them go by. Never pass another driver, and then slow down to teach them a lesson.

Always allow adequate room between you and the car in front of you. Never tap your brakes or lose your temper if you’re being tailgated. Illuminate your turn signal, pull over and allow them to pass.

Nothing provokes another driver more than rude or obscene gestures. Keep your hands on the wheel and avoid making any gestures that might anger other drivers.

Never honk your horn at someone who’s driving slower than you want them to, or who doesn't move quickly enough from a traffic signal. It can set off an altercation or potentially cause a collision.

Even when it’s unintentional, a driver can “snap” and the situation turns dangerous. What can you do if your personal safety is at risk from a hostile motorist?

Steer clear — Stay calm and never respond to drivers who cut you off, tailgate, or try to intimidate you. Give angry or aggressive drivers plenty of room. Do not, under any circumstances, pull off to the side of the road and try to “settle things.”

Avoid eye contact — Looking or staring at another driver can turn an impersonal encounter between two vehicles into a blood feud. And once it gets personal, things can get out of hand fast. Forget about winning. No one wins in a crash.

Get help — Never underestimate an irrational driver’s capacity for mayhem. If you think someone is following you or trying to provoke a confrontation, call the police on your cell phone. Drive to a safe public place such as a police or fire station. This will often discourage a would-be assailant from following you. Don't go home until you're certain the aggressor is gone and it's safe.

Remember, someone else’s driving has nothing to do with you personally. Concentrate instead on the safety of you, your passengers and your vehicle. Stay cool, get out of the way and let other drivers deal with their own issues. Make FIDO your mantra: Forget It; Drive On.

HIGH WATER — Water damage routinely tops the list of homeowners insurance claims.

Water Loss Myths — After the FloodYou might be surprised at what is — and isn’t — covered By Robin Jones

Given how much water modern homes require for their appliances and plumbing systems, it shouldn’t be a surprise that water damage routinely tops the list of the most common homeowners insurance claims, far outpacing fire and extreme weather damage.

What can be surprising, though, is what your insurance company will and won’t cover when it comes to water damage. To help clear up some of the confusion surrounding water losses and homeowners insurance, here’s a quick rundown of some common myths and realities.

Myth: If my home is flooded in a natural disaster, my homeowners policy will cover the damage.

Reality: This is about as cut-and-dried as it comes: Private insurance companies do not cover losses resulting from weather-related flooding. However, you can buy separate insurance through the federal government’s National Flood Insurance Program. There’s even a good chance that if you live on a flood plain, your mortgage lender will require this when you buy a house in a flood-prone area. Not sure whether your home is on a flood plain? The Federal Emergency Management Agency maintains

flood-hazard maps; you can look up your area on the FEMA website.

Myth: My insurer will pay to repair the damage to my home if a sewer or drainpipe leading to my house backs up and causes my sinks and toilets to overflow.

Reality: Depending on where you live and the origin of the backup, your insurer may not cover this type of loss. In some regions, for example, insurance companies will pay for repairs if the pipes that backed up are on your private property, but not if the backup is on city or county land (in which case, the municipality may be responsible for any necessary repairs to your home). In other regions, insurance companies don’t include this type of coverage in their base policies but will allow you to purchase an endorsement for the coverage. Talk with your insurance agent to find out what’s included in your policy.

Myth: If my roof starts to leak during a rainstorm, my insurance will cover any resulting damage.

Reality: Unfortunately, unless that leak comes as a result of wind or a fallen tree branch that rips a hole in your roof, the damage may not be covered. Insurers consider a leaky roof to be maintenance-related and usually won’t cover it.

Myth: My insurance won’t pay for flooding damage to my floors or walls if a pipe or appliance in my home suddenly springs a leak.

Reality: Good news—this is one of the things most insurance companies do cover. In fact, some insurers may also cover what they call “access,” or the cost of getting to the burst pipe. So if your plumber has to jackhammer through the foundation to make the repairs, your coverage might pay for that part of the claim.

Insurers, however, won’t pay to repair a burst pipe or appliance. In addition, if your insurer believes that the leak resulted from a lack of upkeep—say you had a slow leak that you didn’t do anything about—it may deny your claim.

Having a water damage claim is no fun. Managing emergency services, repairs, and some-times, additional living expenses can drain your time and resources. That’s why it’s important to know what’s covered and ways to prevent damage from happening in the first place. If you do have a loss, be sure to contact your insurance company immediately.

You may think identity theft could never happen to you, but each year millions of Americans become victims. What’s worse is that a growing number of identity theft victims are children. Thieves can use a child’s Social Security number to open bank and credit card accounts, apply for a loan or government benefits, rent an apartment, or set up utility service.

Children can have their identity stolen by family members or family acquaintances, but identity thieves are often perfect strangers who specifically target children knowing it can take a long time before the crime is discovered.

Fortunately, parents who are AAA members and sign up for the ProtectMyID® Deluxe identity theft monitoring program can enroll their children, as well. The program is a new benefit for members.

Enrolling in ProtectMyID® Deluxe is a critical step to help protect the identity of you and your minor children. ProtectMyID® Deluxe, a comprehensive Identity Theft Monitoring product by Experian®, is just $8.95 a month—a 56 percent savings for AAA members and associates.

The ChildSecure™ feature of the ProtectMyID® Deluxe product helps detect identity theft of your children by searching for an Experian credit report, monitoring the report, and alerting you if someone applies for credit or opens credit accounts using your children’s personal information.

How could a child have a credit report? Most commonly it is because his or her parents added them to their credit card accounts as an authorized user.

With a multitude of advanced benefits and service AAA Premier takes the traditional benefits of AAA membership and supersizes them. Benefits like Roadside Assistance with up to 200 miles of free towing; Car Rental Reimbursement; and up to $100 Home Lockout services.

Just as AAA Plus expands Basic AAA coverage, Premier is an enhancement to AAA Plus. It’s all about having the freedom to select the membership option that works for you. And AAA Premier is AAA to the maximum.

Members who want to go the distance will find that AAA Premier can deliver one tow of up to 200 miles per household, in addition to up to 100 miles on remaining tows per membership year.

If your vehicle needs to be towed, AAA Premier steps up by reimbursing you with up to $55 in rental car fees. Premier members are entitled to a free Hertz Gold Plus Rewards membership. And when you rent from Hertz (in conjunction with a tow) you’ll receive the second day free on a minimum two-day emergency rental, courtesy of Hertz.

Suppose your trip is delayed or interrupted due to a collision, mechanical failure, vehicle theft, illness, injury or even severe weather. You’re more than 100 miles from home, and what do you do? AAA Premier members are eligible for up to $1,500 Trip Interruption benefits toward the cost of transportation, accommodations, meals or related expenses. Premier is so generous it even

Going the Extra 100 Miles for MembersAAA Premier® Offers 200 Miles Free Towing and More

pays up to $500 to return your vehicle to your home if these issues result in the use of substitute transportation.

With free Global Emergency Assistance, the next time you’re on a domestic or international vacation one call is all it takes to arrange medical provider referrals, prescription replace-ment, lost ticket and document replacement and emergency translation services.

While traveling on a domestic or international trip of at least 100 driving miles from home AAA Premier provides “24-7” Concierge Service, for assistance in securing tickets, reservations, golf tee times, and more.

Monitor Your Child’s Identity

When you enroll your children in ProtectMyID® Deluxe, their information is used to monitor for the presence of an Experian credit report. Parents must provide the following information for each child: first and last name, date of birth and Social Security number. Your children’s information is used only to verify their identities and to begin monitoring new credit information.

Once a child is enrolled, their priv-acy and security are of the utmost importance. For that reason, parents are not allowed to view any of their children’s personal information--such as credit reports--until their own identity can be

With game-changing “firsts” including a skydiving simulator and an observation capsule that lifts guests more than 300 feet in the air, there’s only one word to describe Anthem of the Seas: Wow!

Spanning 18 decks, Royal Carib-bean’s latest ship makes her debut this month sailing a schedule of European and Canary Island cruises. Transformative venues on the 4,100-passenger ship include Two70°SM a multi-sensory great room with floor-to-ceiling glass walls and the line’s most advanced staterooms with upscale customizable layouts and larger, more intuitive storage solutions.

And every one of the 2,090 staterooms will have a view thanks to “virtual balconies.” Inside cabins will become outside cabins thanks to 80-inch LED projection screen mounted on the wall that stream live images from cameras mounted on the sides of the ship.

Ever wonder what it feels like to freefall from 10,000 feet without jumping out of an airplane? First-time flyers and seasoned skydivers can enjoy the adrenalin rush of skydiving risk-free on RipCord by iFly, the only skydiving experience at sea. Before you can say

“Geronimo” you’ll get suited up and be floating on a column of air inside a 23-foot tall transparent glass flight chamber on the top deck.

A marvel of maritime engineering North Star is taking guests to new heights — literally. The jewel-shaped, glass capsule will transport you on a spectacular 15-minute journey more than 300 feet above the ocean. The view alone is worth the trip with unobstructed views of sunrises, sun-sets, ports of call and the boundless ocean.

Anthem’s Dynamic Dining opens up a whole new menu of culinary creations. There are no set dinner times, and no required formal nights. Instead let your appetite be the guide to 18 tantalizing possibilities. The American Icon Grill offers a new take on the classic American road trip, pulling together best-loved regional favorites into one big road atlas of comfort foods. Silk brings the subtle flavors and spices of the Far East to adventurous palates through an exotic Pan-Asian menu. With its elegant décor, supper club ambiance and sophisticated cuisine, every night is formal night in The Grande.

The SeaPlex Dog House — the first food truck at sea — serves up gourmet hot dogs inside a flexible sports and entertainment venue that lets you cut loose and connect with your playful side. Fly through the air on the circus school’s flying trapeze, or shoot some hoops on a regulation size court. Thing go “bump in the night” with the first-ever bumper cars at sea featuring all the fun and excitement of a midway.

Spectacular South Africa continued from page 1

tour a working ostrich farm and, if you choose, ride one of these flight-less and largest of living birds.

After that, a goblet (or 2!) of great wine may be in order. Fortunately, the Cape Winelands region is next. South Africa has produced wine since 1659; at Stellenbosch, one of the region’s oldest European settlements, enjoy wine and chocolate tastings.

One of the world’s most multicul-tural cities, Cape Town hugs a visu-ally stunning harbor with a moun-tain forming a dramatic backdrop. With its plateau more than 3,300 feet high, Table Mountain is surrounded

by near-vertical cliffs. Ride a thrilling cable car to its top for breathtaking views. (When a thin strip of cloud forms over the mountain, locals call it their “tablecloth.”)

Explore charming towns on the Cape Peninsula, where strong winds known locally as the Cape Doctor blow away impurities and clean the air. Stop for a visit with the penguins at Boulders Beach and explore Kirst-enbosch Botanical Gardens, home to more than 5,000 species of plants native to South Africa. Enjoy a tradi-tional African dining experience.

In the unlikely event you haven’t

been totally blown away by this point on the tour, get set! Fly to Zimbabwe for a walking tour of Victoria Falls (the indigenous name Mosi-o-Tunya means “smoke that thunders”), 1 of the world’s 7 greatest natural won-ders. The full width of the Zambezi River plummets in a single vertical drop into a chasm 5,604 feet wide. The depth of the chasm, called the First Gorge, varies from 260 feet at its western end to 354 feet in the center.

Stay at the Edwardian-style Victoria Falls Hotel, the “grand old lady of the falls” hotel, built in 1904. Take a lei-surely cruise on the Zambezi, witness-ing the majestic African sunset. In the morning, enjoy an elephant-back safari, then lunch with a local family and meet residents of their village.

An included excursion to Botswa-na’s Chobe National Park, home to an abundance of wildlife and game, is another highlight of this vacation! Glimpse wildlife from both your river cruise boat and open-air land vehicle.

This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity no lover of wildlife and natural scenic beauty should miss.

Southwest landscape is a symphony made of stone Go Canyoneering in America's National Parks Millions make the trek to Arizona each year to experience the Grand Canyon. Nature's most astonishing spectacle is both exhilarating in its grandeur, and humbling in its scale. Mornings and late afternoon are the best time to admire the Canyon's vast dimensions and shifting palette of colors, but few realize that it's just one of the region's many canyons, all equally rich in color, history, beauty, and splendor.

Located on Navajo tribal lands, the towering buttes of Monument Valley are familiar to movie buffs as the locale of classic John Ford Westerns like Stagecoach and The Searchers. John Ford Point marks the legendary director's favorite camera location; the place where 500 million years of mesas, and sandstone pinnacles, provide a spectacular backdrop to what John Wayne called "where God put the West."

Perched high above the Colorado River in southern Utah, Arches National Park is punctuated with oddly eroded sandstone pinnacles, balanced rocks,

and spires. The name comes from the world's largest concentration of natural arches - more than 2,000 sandstone arches covering some 73,000 acres - along a 40-mile scenic drive with numerous overlooks.

Capitol Reef National Park is characterized by slot canyons, ancient petroglyphs, and a 100-mile long bulge in the earth's crust known as the Waterpocket Fold. Scenic Highway 12 takes travelers into some of Utah's most mesmerizing landscapes with extra-ordinary views of the Capitol Reef, the Circle Cliffs, and the Henry Mountains.

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument sprawls over 1.9 million acres of rose-colored Navajo sandstone, wild rivers and thousand-year-old pinyon trees. It's a landscape so remote it was the last area in the continental United States to be mapped.

Bryce Canyon's natural amphit-heaters are etched into the side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. The smallest of Utah's five national parks houses thousands of oddly humanoid red rock spires known as hoodoos. The Bryce Amphitheater displays many of the parks

best-known form-ations, including the much photo-graphed Thor's Hammer, and the Queen's Castle. Watching the sun come up at Sunrise Point is a ritual here as a fine mist climbs the canyon walls in response to the morning sun, revealing a rocky palette of rose, coral, amber and vermilion.

Zion National Park follows the winding Virgin River surrounded by red and gold stone monoliths that climb more than 2,000-ft high. Located at the junction of the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin and the Mojave Desert, Utah's oldest national park is known for its soaring temples, sculpted sandstone and

spectacular views. Famous hikes include the Narrows, Subway and Angel's Landing, which is definitely not for people with a fear of heights.

The Zion Canyon Shuttle runs through the most traveled area of the park stopping at nine locations including the Temple of Sinawava and the Court of Patriarchs, three sandstone monoliths named after the Old Testament patriarchs Abraham, Issac, and Jacob.

Choosing the perfect family vacation can be a challenge. For parents seeking an alternative to the traditional summer road trip, or week by the seashore, a cruise may be just the solution Cruise vacations offer an attractive, stress-free way to travel and the almost-all-inclusive cruise experience appeals to families in particular. And with homeports like Baltimore and New York, families can avoid the high cost of air travel and drive right up to the pier. Virtually all lines feature extensive, supervised children's programs where kids are placed in age-appropriate groups.

If you have teens, who may be less than enthused about going on a family vacation, don't fret. Most cruise lines are packed with opportunities for them to do their own thing. They can participate in teen-only activities like DJ lessons, head ashore on an outdoor adventure, or party it up at night without being embarrassed by your dated dance moves.

Meanwhile, parents can stretch out on adults-only sundecks, relax in hot tubs, or take an enrichment class. On warm summer nights, babysitting services allow grown-ups to "paint the town," including Broadway-style shows, dining, dancing, and moonlit walks on deck.

Private islands are a popular perk on most Caribbean cruises, and family vacationers consistently rate them as among their favorite ports of call. Half Moon Cay - with its beautiful, crescent-shaped white-sand beach and warm, blue-green waters is a staple of most Holland America Caribbean itineraries, as well as Carnival's Eastern Caribbean departures.

Lapped by calm blue water and thick with powdery sand, the 700-acre lagoon is ideal for watersports and you can spend the day soaking up the sun or playing with the kids in the nearby Aqua Park. The Pegasus Ranch riding tour is one of the island's most popular excursions, and the 40 or so resident horses enjoy a lifestyle that would make Trigger envious.

Surrounded by the gentle, translucent waters of the Bahamas lies the secluded island of CocoCay. Reserved exclusively for Royal Caribbean and Celebrity guests, this 140-acre tropical paradise is home to one of the largest aqua parks in the Bahamas, with in-water trampolines, floating icebergs, and water sports like reef snorkeling, parasailing and jet skis.

A secluded tropical paradise, Labadee sits along the mountainous

north coast of the island of Hispaniola. This semi-private island paradise is a staple of Royal Caribbean's Western, Eastern and Southern Caribbean itineraries. Once the home of the original pirates of the Caribbean, this wooded peninsula features five spectacular beaches and a treasure chest of amenities.

Columbus Cove Beach offers a

variety of attractions including water slides. Nearby Splash Bash is a pirate-themed water playground, featuring a "sunken" pirate ship.

Adventure-hungry guests will find a fresh variety of activities including the new Dragon's Tail Coaster, a high-speed joyride through 2,232 feet of tropical flora and rock formations.

Law-enforcement personnel have plenty of barriers when it comes to reducing drugged driving. However, one nationwide program supported by AAA is increasingly becoming an effective tool in the fight.

A growing number of officers are becoming Drug Recognition Experts, or DREs, part of the Drug Evaluation and Classification program run by the International Association of Chiefs of Police with support from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A wide range exists in how intensely states are involved. As of June 2014, California led all states with 1,215 DREs, followed by Texas (417), Arizona (370) and New Jersey (349). In AAA East Central’s area, New York had 185 DREs, Pennsylvania had 130, Ohio had 94, Kentucky had 67 and West Virginia had six. At the lower end: Delaware had one and Virginia had two.

“The association considers the DEC program to be our best frontline defense against drugged driving as of today,” said AAA Traffic Safety Advocacy & Research Director Jake Nelson. “AAA has been working with states to uncover barriers to growth of the program locally.”

Beginning in 2013, AAA worked on a range of efforts across the U.S. to better leverage the DEC program to curb drugged driving. While some AAA clubs leveraged state policy summits to identify program improvement and growth opportunities unique to a state, other clubs have partnered with their state coordinators to grow the program and have even sponsored training for law enforcement officers.

Since Minnesota’s DRE program started in 1991, arrests solely for drugged driving have grown steadily, increasing “from 5 or 6 per year to 1,100,” said Minnesota State Patrol Lt. Don Marose, the state’s Standardized Field Sobriety Testing/DRE coordinator. Minnesota has 184 DREs with representation from 93 law-enforcement agencies.

“We are gaining about 15 DREs per year,” Marose said. “The upswing in drugged-driving arrests is partially because of DREs and partially because of better training for road officers. I think we’ve gained a lot of traction.”

An arresting officer who performs a field sobriety test and suspects that a driver’s level of impairment is not consistent with the breathalyzer results would call a DRE to perform a 12-step evaluation process that includes eye examinations, readings of vital signs, measuring pupil sizes under different lighting conditions, looking for injection sites and requesting urine, blood or saliva samples. Occasionally, DRE evaluations are conducted at the roadside, but typically they are completed post-arrest.

Officer Bryan Duncan, a DRE instructor for California’s Glendale Police Department, received the state’s Traffic Safety Excellence Award in 2012 and has been honored for his high number of DUI arrests. He also was instrumental in forming Glendale’s DUI task force that focuses heavily on drugged driving.

“Stats clearly show that alcohol-involved traffic fatalities have hit a plateau,” Duncan said. “In one sense, that’s good. However, far too many people die of alcohol-related collisions each year. My own personal view is that drugged driving will surpass alcohol-related driving within the next year, if it hasn’t already.”

DRE training includes two weeks of classroom training, followed by 40 hours of field testing with DRE instructors present. A comprehensive test must then be passed for certification.

DREs are important not only in bringing charges after a drugged-driving arrest, but also in the prosecution phase, where their expertise and testimony can often convince prosecutors, juries and judges of a motorist’s impairment.

“Defense attorneys know the courts and prosecutors are not trained very well in drugged driving cases,” Duncan said. “It’s very difficult to overturn a .08 percent blood alcohol test because the general public has been educated and accepts that level as being impaired. Drug cases are harder to prosecute, because the public doesn’t know what some of these drugs are or the adverse effects they have on the human body and mind. Defense attorneys exploit this and know they only need to put doubt in one juror’s mind.”

In California, where cannabis is legal for medical reasons and penalties were weakened in 2011 for anyone possessing less than 1 ounce of the drug, Duncan has seen a substantial increase in DUI-related collisions involving cannabis. Since 2012, he said, about half of all DUI arrests he has made have been related to marijuana.

“The potency of cannabis in 2015 is dramatically higher today vs. the 1970s,” Duncan said. “This is not your parents’ weed.”

Marose said even though drugged driving arrests have increased, the numbers remain grossly underreported.

“Many times, resources aren’t used to test for other substances if a driver is found to have a .08 percent or higher blood alcohol concentration. I had our lab go back and test about 260 samples that were .08 or higher to see what else was there, and 45 percent had another substance in them. It’s a much larger problem than people think,” he said.

Other law enforcement obstacles include the lack of a reliable roadside drug test, especially for marijuana, and the absence of a zero-tolerance approach to drugged driving in many states.

“It’s difficult to get a clear, concise law that can address thousands of substances that impair the ability to drive,” Marose said. “It’s tough to do the things we do. There are still a ton of gray areas.”

APRIL 201520

Drivers know it can be dangerous to drive at night, when your vision is compromised by poorly lit roads, glare from other vehicles and a host of additional hazards. Such obstacles can easily cause car accidents, roughly one-third of which occur at night.

But while external factors like inadequate lighting on roadways or glare from other vehicles can contribute to poor driving conditions, nighttime accidents are often caused by a driver’s own vision. A driver’s visual acuity is reduced by 70 percent at night, a figure that is even higher among older drivers. The human eye is simply not adapted for nocturnal vision, so colors tend to disappear and contrast fades away while driving at night. Fortunately, there are several things motorists can do to improve their vision when driving at night.

Switch your rearview mirror to the night setting —

You can still see the lights from the cars behind you, but their light will be less bright preserving your night vision. When following other vehicles, use your low beams so you don’t disturb the other drivers.

Inspect headlight lenses — The plastic headlight lenses used on

today’s cars can yellow and get hazy from the effects of ozone, road debris, pollution, age, and even trips to the carwash. As a result, headlight lenses can become ineffective. An easy to use headlight lens restoration kit can restore the lens to “like new” clarity. Clean your headlights after driving in inclement weather to remove dirt, film, and road grime buildup.

Check wiper blades and windshield washer fluid —

A thunderstorm is no time to discover your wiper blades are no longer working. Replace worn blades and be sure to check and replenish your windshield washer fluid.

Check and replace any burnt light bulbs —

When replacing headlight bulbs always change headlight bulbs in pairs to maintain an even field of illumination. Consider upgrading to high performance light bulbs that offer a dramatic improvement over traditional halogen bulbs. Bulbs like Philips Upgrade Headlight Bulbs are designed to put substantially more light on the road while creating a better beam pattern.

Routinely clean your vehicle’s glass and mirrors —

Rain splatter and film buildup can increase glare and reduce vision. Make cleaning the glass and mirrors inside and outside of your vehicle a priority. When cleaning side view mirrors, be sure to properly adjust them to eliminate blind spots.

LED lights employ new technology that is designed to replace the standard

incandescent bulbs that most vehicles use for brake lights, taillights and backup lights. Unlike traditional incandescent bulbs, LED lights are brighter, and turn on instantly, making it easier for other drivers to see you and react to any sudden stops you may have to make. That instant response time can reduce braking distance by up to 20 feet, even at speeds as high as 75 miles per hour.

There are two really good reasons to consider a green car: to save money and to save the planet. Reducing automotive emissions and boosting fuel economy offer huge benefits for society, including improvements to the environment, public health, and energy security. According to the EPA cars and light trucks are responsible for 17 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions.

And even with lower gas prices, buying a high-MPG car is still the most effective way to spend less money on fuel. But car buyers looking for fuel efficiency, low emissions, and solid driving performance are often confronted by unfamiliar terminology and a bewildering array of choices in terms of fuels and technologies.

AAA’s Green Car Guide — produced annually by the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Automotive Research Center Consumers — is designed to help consumers make informed choices about hybrids and low emission vehicles. Developed by the Automobile Club of Southern California’s

Automotive Research Center (ARC), it not only defines what a green car is, but explains the differences between various types of green vehicles so potential buyers are able to determine which green car best matches their lifestyle.

Filled with information on plug-in hybrids (PHEV), battery electric vehicles (EV), partial zero emission vehicles (PZEV), compressed natural gas powered vehicles (CNG), clean diesels (TDI) and fuel economy leaders, the 140-page guide features reviews and rankings of vehicles ranging in price and size from the Tesla S, to the Nissan Leaf, Audi A7 TDI, to the Chevrolet Spark.

For those who don’t know a ULEV from a PZEV, the guide also explains:

• Differences between technologies and the advantages and disadvantages of each;

• EV charging 101;• Fuel economy tips, alternative

fuels and automotive acronyms.“The Green Car Guide is a resource

for car buyers and enthusiasts seeking information on fuel-efficient vehicles and

low-emission tech-nologies,” said ARC Manager Megan McKernan. “It pro-vides consumer-friendly data and real-world evalu-ations to help car buyers make in-formed choices.”

ARC engineers and specialists eval-uated the more than 80 green vehicles in the guide in 13 categories (including emissions, mpg, acceleration, handling, interior noise, ride quality, and cargo capacity). Each category is scored on a basis of 0-10 points. Scores were totaled to determine top vehicles. Then, each vehicle’s total score was divided by its as-tested price to determine its cost per point for best value. The guide lists vehicle specifications, test scores, data and observations in a summary of the car and lists their strengths and weaknesses.

Tailgating may be great before a Jimmy Buffet concert, but in traffic, not so much. Rear-end crashes make up more than one in four collisions reported to police each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) — and many are preventable. They recently announced support for two advanced driver assistance systems, crash imminent braking and dynamic brake support under their under its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).

While this endorsement does not require automakers to include these advanced braking features on new vehicles, NHTSA hopes to encourage buyers to consider these features, and automakers to expand their availability.

Crash imminent braking, also known as automated emergency braking, applies the brakes automatically to help prevent or minimize a collision if a driver fails to react in a timely manner when a

potential crash is detected. Dynamic brake support, also known as brake assist, automatically applies maximum braking power when a collision is imminent and the driver is not applying sufficient braking to prevent or minimize the impact.

Systems like Chevrolet’s Front Automatic Braking — available in the 2015 Chevrolet Impala, Tahoe and Suburban — can automatically slow or stop the vehicle under certain conditions, for example, if the driver does not respond quickly to an alert.

“Many of us have been in driving situations where the car ahead of us suddenly slows — or we momentarily look away at the wrong time — and we have to slam on the brakes to avoid a collision,” said General Motors Active Safety Technical Fellow Raymond J. Kiefer. “Front Automatic Braking provides a layer of driver assistance to help prevent this common crash situation.”

In a report earlier this year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

estimated that forward coll-ision alert tech-nology applied across the en-tire passenger vehicle fleet could prevent 879 fatal crashes a year.

The auto industry has focused on re-ducing rear crashes for decades. Systems such as the Center High Mounted Stop Lamp — or CHMSL — have been in effect since 1986 in passenger cars and 1994 in light trucks. Over the long term, these have helped reduce rear crashes.

AAA supports the NCAP program and believes automated braking systems and other safety-related technologies offer great potential to reduce crashes or their severity. However, in order to

achieve a net safety benefit, drivers will need to fully understand what these systems can and cannot do. Drivers must guard against relying on these systems in ways that reduce their potential safety benefits, such as following the vehicle ahead too closely.

While cars have become much safer over the last few decades, drivers have not. Active safety technologies like automated emergency braking are helping to bridge the gap between man and machine.

CLOSE CALL — Automated emergency braking can help prevent or minimize a collision.

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that 10,000 people will turn 65 every day from now until 2030. Understanding the safety and mobility needs of these newly-minted seniors is a pressing concern.

The Longitudinal Research on Aging Drivers (LongROAD) is a $12 million project by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, that will allow researchers to better understand the role of physical and cognitive functions, medical conditions, medications and vehicle technologies in driving safety.

Researchers will also examine how older drivers self-regulate to avoid difficult driving conditions, and the causes and consequences of driving cessation. This project will generate a wealth of data by tracking a large group of older drivers (roughly 3,000) for an extended period of 5-10 years.

The University of Michigan Trans-portation Research Institute (UMTRI) is one of five national test sites selected by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety to address the well-being of older drivers.

AAA is Taking the LongROAD for Senior Driver Safety Understanding the needs of tomorrow’s older drivers David Eby, research professor and head

of UMTRI’s Behavioral Sciences Group, is a co-principal investigator of the overall project.

“Like most people, older adults consider driving to be essential to independence and well-being,” Eby said. “With aging, however, comes a higher likelihood of medical conditions that can affect safe driving ability. Thus, it is important for society to both help older adults continue driving for as long as they can safely do so and to help people stay mobile once they have decided to stop driving. This multi-state project will provide much needed information to help us solve this pressing societal issue.”

Researchers at University of Mich-igan, Columbia, Johns Hopkins Univer-sity, University of California-San Diego, University of Colorado-Denver, the Urban Institute and the Bassett Research Institute will recruit a total of 3,000 active drivers ages 65-79 at five study sites (600 drivers at each site). They will follow these drivers over time through annual assessments and interviews, and will fit each driver’s vehicle with a GPS device

to learn about their driving pat-terns.

Each partic-ipant’s car will be fitted with an automatic data collection device that will record where the vehicle is being driven and some other vehicle-based data. All naturalistic driving data for all sites will be processed at UMTRI by the Behavioral Sciences and Engineering Systems groups.

All participants will engage in a comprehensive assessment of physical, mental and perceptual functioning every two years; have their vehicles visually inspected every other year; complete a questionnaire on health, well-being,

attitudes and driving every year; and have all driving trips recorded. The project will also collect medical, crash and driving history records for all participants.

This study will provide AAA with the scientific backing needed to advocate for effective policies and programs. The database it creates will also serve as a “go-to” resource for answering the most pressing questions about senior safety and mobility for years to come.

Although vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death for teens, fewer new drivers are participating in what used to be considered a rite of passage — driver education.

State funding and requirements for these programs have declined over recent decades, leaving uneducated teen drivers vulnerable on America’s roads. New research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reveals that teens who skip this important step are involved in more crashes and receive more traffic convictions compared to their peers that participated in driver education.

This research confirms what conventional wisdom tells us — driver education makes a difference. Despite recent declines in participation, the overwhelming majority of Americans believe new drivers should take part in this critical step of the learning-to-drive process.

This study assessed examples of U.S. and Canadian driver education programs using a variety of evaluation methods including surveys, driver’s licensing tests,

More Crashes and Convictions for Teens That Skip Driver EdNew report looks at teen driving behavior

driver simulators and the review of driving records. The results revealed that several key differences exist between teens who receive driver education and those who do not, including:

Driver education is associated with a lower incidence of both crashes and convictions — reducing crashes by 4.3 percent and convictions by nearly 40 percent.

Teens that completed driver education not only scored higher on the driving exam, they also demonstrated modest increases in knowledge over their peers who did not take any formal training.

“Overall, the findings suggest that driver education can make a difference, but there is still much room for improvement in most existing programs,” noted Peter Kissinger, President and CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “This underscores the need for states to adopt the NHTSA-supported Standards that are designed to enhance the scope and quality of driver education.”

AAA, a vocal advocate for teen driver

safety for nearly 80 years, works at the state level to improve driver education programs and prioritizes five of the NHTSA-funded Novice Teen Driver Education and Training Administrative Standards, owned by the driver education community:

• Requiring a teen’s parent/guardian to attend an educational seminar;

• Ensuring that classroom instruction is completed in no less than 30 days;

• Requiring annual continuing education for driving instructors;

• Ensuring standards are met by public and private driving schools;

ROAD SCHOLAR — Teens that completed driver education scored higher on the driving exam.

• Adopting a comprehensive graduated drivers licensing (GDL) system that integrates driver education.

AAA and the AAA Foundation are committed to helping teens stay safe on the roads and have developed comprehensive resources including TeenDriving.AAA.com, a state-specific website to help parents navigate the learning-to-drive process, includes StartSmart Online Parent Session, a two-hour webinar that explains the licensing process and parents’ role, and demonstrates how to maximize the practice driving that parents/guardians are required to do with their teen.
