Fourth Grade “In the Spotlight”
Fourth graders have been very busy this year working on a lot of things!
Reading: We are using Reading Workshop to structure our language arts block and close reading strategies to
make reading comprehension meaningful. Students have more independence and choice in their reading and
they are able to make connections to their everyday life. We have read “Because of Winn-Dixie,” “Little House
in the Big Woods,” “Caddie Woodlawn,” “Journey Back to Lumberjack Camp,” “Snot Stew”, “Guinea Dog,” and
“A Cricket in Times Square,” just to name a few.
Math: We started out the year working on place value and patterns. We have moved on to much harder math
concepts including: Multiplication, Division, Multi-digit Multiplication, Division with Remainders, Measurement,
Patterns, Algebraic equations, and Elapsed Time. We are working on Fractions and will continue with those for
some time.
Social Studies: We are busy studying the fourth of five regions on the United States. We have memorized the
states, capitals, and postal abbreviations for the other three regions. We took our 3rd T-C Capitol Field trip at
the end of February. We finished our agriculture unit and planted our potatoes.
Science: We have completed the following units- plants and animals, human body, and lights, sound, electricity.
We are now starting on weather. We will conclude our year with Rocks and Minerals.
In addition to our academics, we enjoy our monthly Heart to Heart events, the Pacer and snow-shoeing in PE,
playing recorders in music, our 2D and 3D unit in art, and recess time. We have many spring field trips planned,
many more Common Core and District academic standards to meet, another round of STAR testing, the 1st ever
FORWARD Exam testing language arts, social studies, science, and math, and many more 4th grade memories to
make.

Mallory Altenburg, 9th grade,
is an outstanding student and
an exceptionally kind and com-
passionate person. Mrs. Lara
Nugent said Mallory strives for
excellence in academics, activi-
ties, and being a strong leader.
Ms. Tara Groth said Mallory
is a constant joy to have in
Spanish class. She catches
onto concepts very quickly and
is always volunteering to par-
ticipate. She works very hard
in class and inspires those
around her to do the same.
Her sense of humor is a wel-
come presence. According to
Mr. Bill Femal, Mallory has
accomplished many things this
year. She recently completed
the Solo & Ensemble contest,
performing a very musical solo
on trumpet. Mallory is always
friendly, prepared for class
and working on the challenges
ahead.
10th grader, Caitlin Eisner, has been
a leader all year for our program
and the flute section said Mr. Bill
Femal. She has performed at her
church and has just participated at
Solo & Ensemble contest at Pacelli.
Caitlin’s positive attitude and self-
motivation has been a pleasure to be
around.
Randy Shaw, 11th grade, is
one of those fly under the
radar students, but his dili-
gence in class and his will-
ingness to engage in a les-
son is rare said Mr. David
Krystowiak. This benefits
his understanding of a les-
son, but also aids in the
learning of his classmates as
he engages in discussion
and serves as a positive ex-
ample for his peers. Randy
engages in activities that
are new and challenging
with exceptional effort and
a positive attitude. He is a
pleasure to work with and
Mr. Krystowiak is glad to
have him in class.
12th grader, Jacob Kealiher, has
been putting forth a lot of extra
effort in his academics and on
the basketball court said Mrs.
Julie Senft. He takes pride,
now, in what he does and con-
tinues to work hard toward his
goal of graduation! According
to Mr. Bill Femal, Jacob is a
senior that we will all remem-
ber. He is full of energy and has
a love for basketball, music, and
making people happy. As his
coach and teacher, Mr. Femal
has had the opportunity to be
around him during the daytime
and many long bus rides in the
evening. Jacob is the guy that
everyone knows and enjoys
talking to.
Karen Stainbrook, 8th grade, has been attending the Tri-County School District since kindergarten according to Mr. George Weir. She is a very hard-working and responsible student who does very well in all of her classes. She is an active member of the student council, was a member of the 8th grade volleyball team/track team and is an excellent clarinet player in the M.S. Band. Karen is also a caring and helpful classmate. Her outside interests include: doing outside activities with her family, hiking, downhill skiing, and hunting and trapping. She has a bright future ahead of her when she graduates from Tri-County. Congratula-tions Karen!
7th grader, Baylee Woiak, has been attending the Tri-County School District since kinder-garten. Mr. George Weir said she has been a very active member of the M.S. Band and choir programs, a participant in the middle school play and enjoys playing softball. She is a very hard worker who ex-cels in all of her classes. Baylee gets excellent grades and is a friend to everyone she meets. She loves to read and write in her spare time, go swimming in the summer and spend time with her fam-ily. Baylee is a very caring young lady and is aspiring to become a pediatrician when she graduates from high school. Congratulations Baylee!

The entire staff here at school works very hard, but we also like to have a little fun from time to time! A few years ago, a small group of teachers and administrators came together to discuss how to promote literacy in our district. We decided to create a video of staff and students involved in a number of different literacy activities. At our Family Reading Night, we unveiled our video for the first time. As you’ll see in this video, reading skills are necessary in all areas of the curricu-lum here at school, and all of us use reading in some form or another every day. Please check out the link on our school website to watch this fantastic video!
Literacy Video Committee: Mrs.Ertl, Mrs.Jepson, Mr. Mari-nack, Mr. Hansen, Mrs. Schroeder, Mrs. Jagielo, Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Jasin, Mrs. Eppinger, Ms. Bechard
The school year is coming to an end and your yearbook staff has captured all those great memo-ries and compiled them all into a great keepsake for you for years to come! The yearbook staff has 10 extra copies of the yearbook available if you are still interested in a copy bring $60.00 to the high school office and reserve your copy! If you have any questions please feel free to email Kathy at [email protected] or Ann in the high school of-fice 715-335-6366 ext 4910.
