Talk About It

Did you know that you don’thave to be a great singer tojoin; you just have to enjoy

singing? If you are interestedin joining the Choir, pleasesign up in the Activity Book

located in the Main Lobbiesof Buildings 1 and 2. The choir

is the voice of AmericanHouse.

‘Sing’ Is OneHow many words can

you come up withusing the letters in

“springtime”?

‘Q’ Up forScrabble

In a game ofScrabble, it’s allabout the luck of thedraw—the letter tilesplayers draw on eachturn. One tile that canearn double-digitpoints is the letter Q.However, the odds ofhaving amuch-needed letterU at the same timearen’t favorable. Youcan still score big bymemorizing somewords that use Qwithout a U. Try oneof these: qi, qat, cinq, qaid, faqir and tranq.

Wild World: Mallard DuckThe most common wild duck in

the U.S., the mallard is also thoughtto be the most abundant andwide-ranging duck in the world. It isfound in fresh bodies of waterthroughout North America, Europeand Asia. Male mallards, calleddrakes, have a green head, a whiteneckband and a brown and graybody. Females have mottled brownand white feathers all over theirbodies except for an iridescent bluepatch on their wings. Mallards aredabbling ducks, meaning they tiptheir bodies vertically into the water, with their tail in the air, to feed onfish, frogs and plants. Femalemallards quack, but males do not;instead, they make a soft, raspy“kreep” sound.

Memorable Melody: ‘Aprilin Paris’

This ballad about springtime lovein the City of Light was originallycomposed by Vernon Duke and YipHarburg for the 1932 Broadwayrevue “Walk a Little Faster.” It wasremade as the title song for the1952 film and sung by star DorisDay. But it was the playfularrangement by the Count BasieOrchestra in 1956 that made it ajazz classic, famous for its trumpetsolo and fake-out ending in whichBasie directs the band to play “onemore time,” not once, but twice.
