April 2017 Newsletter From the Principal Dear Central Park Families, Happy Spring! I would like to thank all of the parents, families and staff who volunteered to make our Spring Fling Carnival a success! A special thank you goes out to our PTA leaders, for their organization and planning of this event. Your time and effort was appreciated by our school community!! Spring is also a great time of the year for us as a school to highlight with children the importance of reading everyday. There is research that shows students who read independently for 20 minutes or more a day will typically score far better on standardized tests. It is no wonder though, since a child who reads independently for 10 minutes a day will read a little more than 622,000 words in a year, but a child reading 20 minutes a day will read about 1,823,000 words. With numbers like that it is evident the impact reaches far beyond testing. Imagine all of the information and background knowledge a child picks up from reading nearly 2,000,000 words in a year!! It is also the time of year that all students grades 3-6 will be doing The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs). These are important and required state tests which measure student progress toward Minnesota's academic standards. Please reassure your child that they have been working toward these skills all year. It is not something to worry about, but rather an opportunity to show what they know. We also know success is measured in many ways beyond the scope of a test score. We are proud of our students and know they will do their best! You may access more information about MCA tests by going to the Minnesota Department of Education website at: Parent Fact Sheet - MCA. You may also access sample test items there as well under MCA Item Samplers. The seasons are once again changing. Spring is here! We are looking forward to being able to go outside for phy. ed.when the weather warms up!

We will start the month working on some tumbling skills. Students will work onflexibility, core strength, and balance. After our tumbling unit, we will begin our spring fitnesstesting. Students will be tested on the same physical fitness tests we did in the fall:  sit and reach,sit-ups, and long-distance running. The goal of this fitness testing is to try and improve thestudent’s scores from the fall.

Please remember that tennis shoes are required for physical education class. For safety reasons, students will not be allowed to participate in sandals or flip flops.
