THANK YOU!

From the Betty Etter family:

“Your kind expressions of sympathy

mean so much. It has been a privilege

having such a wonderful Church fami-

ly. Our family has been blessed with

many notes, and food from friends and

family at this time. Thank you from

the whole Etter Family — Laverne,

Linda, Mark, Karen and Jon (and as-

sorted grandkids, great grandchildren,

wives and husbands).”

Our UMW ladies would like to

thank everyone who pitched in to help

set- up and clean-up for St. Patrick's

Pot Luck after church on March 12th.

You were very much appreciated!

On The Road To The Cross by Rob Burkhardt. The

author’s comments on the road to the Cross allow

you to experience Easter through the eyes of the

everyday people who witnessed the triumphal en-

try, saw Jesus drag his cross to Calvary, and cried

through Christ’s last words. Each new perspective

opens to a fresh consideration of Easter

and its impact on their lives and ours.

There’s always a place at the table, so we

hope to see you there.

I felt for everyone involved and the folks from Moon-

light really didn’t have the chance to celebrate in an open

way. In fact, the next few days were about how a mis-

take of this magnitude could happen at such a crucial

moment, and how each year has an historic quality all

its own.

Moving on and preparing for Easter, the celebration of

a living historical event, I couldn’t help but think that

there were people, and the institutions they represent-

ed, that when they heard that Christ had risen from the

dead -- thought it was a mistake. The disciples had the

teachings of Christ, but who can blame them at this mo-

ment that they are in hiding and wondering what will

happen next for them.

But Christ had risen and was fulfilling the needs that

we have as human beings. They heard His voice and

touched Him, and then they were able to worship. Far

from being angry at their lack of faith or their lack of

anticipation for this moment, Christ was ready to com-

fort them and then, speaking with words, He called the

disciples to an even greater purpose.

Resurrection is real and all of our mistakes are certainly

forgiven now and always. We are meant to be persons

of great purpose and, in these uncertain times, we are

meant to declare in the spirit of the resurrected One

that there is nothing impossible with God!

It gives a whole new meaning to these favorite words.

And the winner is………

See you in Church, Pastor Aaron

ST. MATTHEW 28: 9 “Suddenly Jesus met them and said, 'Greetings!' And they came to him,

took hold of his feet, and worshipped him.”

You probably agree with me that there are some things

that, if you were told they were going to happen in

advance, you would say "no way.” That happened to

me in watching the Oscars -- one of entertainment’s

biggest nights. The previews and staging on that

evening are just so big. I can’t imagine all of the hours

in preparation, both in a technical sense -- and of course

preparation for the host, presenters and so forth.

I don’t watch the Oscars every year. Sometimes I forget

when they are going to be on. But in my limited

knowledge, I thought the movies that were nominated

for best picture this year were very diverse in their style

and message, and I was curious to see who the winner

would be.

But finally the moment came, and the words came out -

- and the winner is La La Land . The actors, and others

who had been involved took the stage and you could

see their excitement all around. Suddenly, you could

see and even feel that something else was happening. It

was then that a courageous member from La La Land

came forward and said, "the winner is Moonlight." The

cast and crew of Moonlight must have thought it was a

joke, and finally the person from La La Land said,

"it's not a joke" as he held up the correct envelope.

Hi Church Family,

This is John Almgren and I’m chair of RUMC Trustees

for 2017. The other members of Trustees are Jeremy

Riggle, Kevin Yake, and Bill Crawford. We are doing

our best to keep things in good working order here at

our Redlands UMC. We’ve got a lot going on around

the church for the next few months and I wanted to let

you know about some opportunities where you can

bring your service to help with maintenance and up-

keep of our church.

As many of you know, our church building is aging

and, like all facilities, it needs regular maintenance

and repairs to keep everything in good condition.

Other than our contract cleaning service, we do not

have paid staff to provide maintenance and repairs to

the church. We depend on volunteers like you to lend

a hand where able.

I personally get a great deal of satisfaction with help-

ing. This is a form of service that many of us can pro-

vide by volunteering a few hours per year, per month,

or even per week. Some areas to consider offering

your help include:

Clearing sidewalks of snow (I think we are done

with that for this season)

Helping with deep cleaning of the church on our

spring and fall church cleaning days.

Maintenance and startup support for the 16 roof-

mounted swamp coolers in the spring.

Maintenance and shutdown support for these

swamp coolers in the fall.

Mowing the grass. Consider signing up for a cou-

ple of different weeks this summer. Ask a

friend or family member to partner with you

and you can be done in 1-1/2 hours. (We will

have a signup at the Welcome Center soon.)

Upkeep and maintenance of flower beds and land-

scaping. Nan McNees has agreed to be the volun-

teer coordinator for this activity. (See page 10 of this

newsletter.)

Maintenance of the irrigation system. Several (8)

Maxi-Paw lawn sprinklers need replaced. We could

use help with purchase of replacement units.

Upkeep and maintenance of the audio-visual sys-

tems. Due to a very generous contribution (THANK

YOU!), we were recently able to upgrade the over-

head projector in the sanctuary. We still need help

with the soundboard in the sanctuary and the am-

plifier in the fellowship hall. Jeremy Riggle has tak-

en leadership of these projects, so if you can lend

support, please talk to Jeremy.

Weed control of the area along Broadway is an un-

budgeted expense. Any help in this area would be

greatly appreciated.

And many other endeavors: boilers, plumbing, toi-

lets, paint, roof repair, etc.

Next on the agenda is “Spring Cleaning.” We are hav-

ing a heck of a time getting a weekend scheduled to

wash windows and get swamp coolers up and running.

Due to other conflicts, it looks like this activity will get

pushed back to May 20. However, that is too late to get

swamp coolers up and running, so we are going to

break up the work on swamp coolers to a couple of sep-

arate sessions in April…. dates and times to-be-

announced.

Along that line, we need to find a better way to com-

municate specific needs of Trustee volunteers to inter-

ested people and potential new volunteers. I’ve done a

little research and I’d like to use a notification applica-

tion called “Remind.” If you are interested in helping

with maintenance of the church and would like to get

notifications from time-to-time, then please talk to one

of the Trustees about getting signed up. There is no obli-

gation- just a better way to stay informed.

Thanks in advance for your help!

John Almgren

Meet the 1st & 3rd Thursdays each month at 9am at

RUMC to maintain our beautiful flower gardens. Great

benefits - learn what gardening tasks need to be done

when, how to do them and take home extra plants!

THANK YOU SO MUCH for the great privilege

of joining this very special congregation as one of your

musicians! I am VERY much looking forward to be-

coming acquainted with all of you. My husband, Pas-

tor Al, and I have been with you in recent services and

are duly impressed with all of you and the quality of

your service. Thank you for making us feel totally at

home...even back to our first Sunday with you.

Now, I'm not sure how much you want to know

about me, but I've been a church musician for a lot of

years in various denominations. However, I always

come back to the Methodists! I LOVE the service and

fellowship! The biggest factor is you, the people with

our common bond in our Lord and Savior, Jesus

Christ.. I am thrilled about the prospect of worshiping

together in joy and happiness as we express our

love and praise through music. I do hold a degree in

Music Education from the University of WY.

As a possible note of interest: Your recently re-

tired organist, Laine Cross, and I both attended the

same school (Campion Academy) near Loveland, CO.

My parents moved us there from Chadron, NE where

my grandfather had been a frontier judge. They wanted

us to attend a Christian school. All of us, my brothers

and sister (me, the middle child of five) were in elemen-

tary school at that time. One of the first things I no-

ticed in church were the "academy kids" who played

the organ for services. They played the organ ... not

only with their hands...they played with their FEET! I

asked my parents to sit close to the organ so that I

could watch that amazing "feat! (feet). During that peri-

od of time, one of those organists would most likely

have been Laine!.. my first inspiration to become an

organist (Small World)!

Anyway, so much for "Story Time!" To put it

mildly, I am excited about our future together!!

In the New Testament Gospel of Mark, we meet Jesus,

the man who is King. But this king comes to serve--not

to be served. He eats with sinners rather than royalty.

His crown is made of thorns instead of gold. This study

guide introduces you to the compassionate, suffering,

astonishing King who calls us to follow him.

This Season of Grace, deepen your faith in a God who

so loved the world that He gave us His son. You’re

about to meet three women named Mary, each of

whom has a life-changing encounter with Jesus...Mary

of Bethany, Mary of Nazareth, and Mary Magdalene.

(Due to the Women’s Walk to Emmaus during GJ

ShareFest weekend, April 28/29, RUMC’S will be held

Saturday, May 6, instead. See volunteer and need

sign-up sheets at the RUMC Welcome Center. RUMC

ShareFest leaders are Kathy Hillman & Jan Cortez.)

What is ShareFest?

Churches go out into the community and show the love

of Jesus in tangible ways. Different churches and de-

nominations come together and serve the community in

the name of Jesus. People of all ages work on projects

including cleaning yards, sewing lap quilts for care cen-

ter residents, walking through neighborhoods picking

up trash, painting mobile homes, and making care

packages for college students. The Church comes to-

gether, and it is a sight to behold.

How does it happen?

Participating churches and their volunteers decide

which day(s) they are going to serve. Volunteers get

together in groups, adopt a project, and choose a team

leader who, with someone else, visit the project sites to

evaluate the projects and then work with the volunteers

to set the time they will meet, determine tools and sup-

plies needed, and prepare any other logistics for pro-

ceeding with the projects.

To be determined through Visioning Process

Spring has sprung and the Leadership Team

is busy getting the church ready for the season. At

our meeting last week we discussed many of the is-

sues the Trustees deal with to keep our church doors

open. If you see a Trustee give them a hug because

they do an awful lot for our church.

We also want to welcome Carolyn Woolman

as our new organist. Come listen at the 11am ser-

vice. We think you’ll agree she is the perfect person

to replace Laine Cross who so faithfully was our or-

ganist for so many years. Thank you Laine.

Another item of business we discussed is the

upcoming 7:30am Easter Breakfast. The Leadership

Team has taken on this task and will be providing

muffins, juice, fruit and casseroles that morning. If

anyone in the congregation would like to help us in

providing a welcoming brunch for our Easter guests,

we would encourage you to sign up at the Welcome

Center. We appreciate your help.

We also want to thank the congregation for

your patience with our sound issues in the Sanctu-

ary. The company that we are working with is in the

process of moving and it would be very hard for us

to get the sound board to a company in Glenwood to

look at it. It will only be another week or so before

the local company can come help us with the situa-

tion. Please pray for an easy solution.

It is so nice to drive by and see our church

being used by so many members of our community.

It is also nice to welcome new members into our con-

gregation. Keep up the good work. With more

hands we can serve more meals at HomewardBound

and other great causes around our community.

As the Lord said to Abram in Genesis 12:2 “I

will make you a great nation, and I will bless you. I

will make you famous, and you will be a blessing to

others.” We are all blessed to be members of Red-

lands United Methodist Church, so how will you be

a blessing to others today?

Until next month,
