A Word from Pastor Mike
On Sunday, April 16 we will cele-
brate Easter as a Cary United Method-
ist Church family. I love the chorus of
the hymn, Because He Lives, written
by Gloria and Bill Gaither: “Because
he lives, I can face tomorrow, because
he lives, all fear is gone; because I
know he holds the future, and life is
worth the living just because he lives.”
This is the center of our Easter cele-
bration. All the flowers, all of the
cards, all of the Easter feasts point to
one central reality: God raised Jesus
Christ from the dead.
Historians and scholars will point
out the existence of other messianic fig-
ures who lived in the first century. Many
claimed to be the answer for the Jewish
people, but only Jesus of Nazareth was
authentic. His followers, who were once
so devastated by his death, participated
in the greatest movement in human histo-
ry. They moved from cowardice to cour-
age because he lives. They embodied
the truth of the words the Apostle Paul
wrote to believers living in the city of Cor-
inth: “For as all die in Adam, so all will be
made alive in Christ.” (1 Corinthians
15:22) The good news of Easter has
profound meaning for each one of us.
Because he lives, we live fully, abundant-
ly, eternally. No challenge, no tragedy,
no illness, even death itself can
take our hope away.
Of course we will be tested
and tempted. We will face pain and
grief and loss in the course of our
lives. We will face them differently
because he lives. The message of
Easter is the promise that we will
ultimately live in the very presence
of God. Revelation chapter 21
promises that when God draws us
close, every tear is wiped away,
even pain and death disappear.
This is what we cling to on Easter.
This is the truth that sustains us.
This is what we believe. Come and
celebrate with us on April 16. We
will worship together at 8:30 and
11:00 and share an Easter Break-
fast at 9:30.
May God in Christ bless you richly,
Pastor Michael Hickok

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! By Lois Voss Our annual church rummage sale transformed Fellowship Hall into the greatest bargain store in McHenry County. We celebrate earning money for the United Methodist Women mission giving for the needs of women, youth, and children. We cheer earning money for our much needed church kitchen remodel project. A huge thank you to the Scouts, our church youth, and adults who helped in many ways. The greatest needs are always the Sunday drop-off times and the Saturday clean-up. The 2 days of sorting and pricing plus the sale days are busiest in the mornings when our core group of volun-teers are on hand. Awesome meals and snacks arrived thanks to Amy Peterson, Elena Mularski, Lois Voss, Elfine Hansen, Janie Oberheide, Cassandra Booker, Vicki Oberlies, and the United Methodist Men. Plus each day we had a special donation of bakery goods from Panera Bread in Fox River Grove. Please thank these folks when you see them: Dawn & Jim Ferree, Glenda Arnold, Shawna De La Rosa, Amy & Mark Peterson, Church Youth: Amshul & Priyanka George, Sofie Rank, Emi-ly Liautaud, Adrian Coetzee; Troop 160: Craig Carlson, Emerson & Mark Brashear, Alex An-derson, Travis Holmes, Josh Mishall, Duncan Raner; Carly, Jason & Nathon Splitt, Janie Ober-heide, Linda Hickok, Donna Miller, Carolyn Downs, Julie Lilly, Sib Yount, Daniel Lee, Bruce Oberlies, Rich Heizer, Joyce Fernekes, Christina & Dan Rank, Verica Liautaud, Barb Meckl, Carroll & Carl Wagus, Elfine Hansen, Sara Kelly, Pat Van Allen, Geri Burhop, Joan & Tom Prather, Mary & Bill Koenig, Cassandra & Barry Booker, Lynn & Andre Coetzee, Dave DCamp, John Murphy. We were able to use SAVERS in Crystal Lake to pick up our unsold goods—and they will pay us for the donation plus also make a donation to the Chicago area Epilepsy Foundation. We have a small amount of goods for S.C.A.R.C.E. located in Glen Ellen, a non-profit collecting a multi-tude of goods for educators and community groups. We had a bag of stained clothing, raggy towels, and other material that will be taken to the Sparrow’s Nest and then sent on for textile recycling in Chicago.
Again, we thank you for all your donations and service!

Maundy Thursday Worship Thursday, April 13, 7:30pm "Maundy" comes from the Latin mandatum, which means "commandment." On Maun-dy Thursday, also known as Holy Thursday, we remember Jesus’ last night before his betrayal and arrest when he washed the feet of his disciples giving them a new com-mandment to love one another as he had loved them (John 13:34). Our worship will in-clude the act of washing of hands. Prayer Vigil Friday, April 14, 12-6pm (Sign up for a time slot in the narthex.) A prayer vigil is when believers gather for a designated length of time to focus on seek-ing God’s will. As we pray, we believe that we can discern God’s specific will for our church, we grow closer to God and to one another in unity. Good Friday Worship (Tenebrae: A Service of Darkness) Friday, April 14, 7:30pm A service of Tenebrae or Darkness originated in the twelfth century and is an extended meditation on the passion of Christ. The sixteen scripture readings that will be read are a translation from the Gospel of John, chapters 18:1 - 19:42, by James H. Charles-worth. Easter Sunday Sunday, April 16, 8:30 and 11am He has risen! The reason Sundays do not count as a part of Lent is because all Sundays are considered to be small Easters. We celebrate Christ’s resurrection every Sunday. Worship with us as we celebrate Christ’s resurrection! Easter Breakfast Sunday, April 16, 9:30-10:30 am Fellowship Hall Come and celebrate Easter morning with breakfast prepared by the United Methodist Men! A free-will offering will be taken. If you have any questions, please contact our office at (847) 639-7627 or by email at [email protected].

Nurture Team
Sunday School (Pre-6th Grade)
During Lent Each Sunday during Lent, we have been exploring the different stories of Jesus before his death and resurrec-tion. One of the stories we learned about was when Jesus got angry at the Tem-ple. We might think that Jesus was always nice and happy but that’s not true! Jesus got angry and even over- turned the tables of the money chang-ers when he saw them cheating people. Together, we learned that it is okay to get angry but we need to be angry at the right things like bullying, lying, stealing, anything that harms someone else. We played real life Angry Birds to practice getting angry at the right stuff. Then, we learned about control-ling our anger by making glitter put-ties! We also learned about the last meal Jesus had with his disciples. There, Jesus taught his disciples to serve oth-er people. Jesus set an example by washing the disciples’ feet. Yuck! We practiced this during class by washing each other’s hands. We want
Join us every Sunday, 9:45-10:45am in Wesley Wing, as we grow in love for God and our neighbors through games, science, cooking, drama, mission and spiritual practice! No class on Easter Sunday, April 16.

All Church Bunco Night
This year, our Nurture team has been focused on getting our entire church, young and old, to come together for a night of games, desserts and conversation. In February, we planned a Bunco night which is an easy and fun game that anyone can learn to play and forces everyone to mix between rounds.
We had a feast-like spread of delicious desserts to share. Everyone enjoyed spending the night together laughing and getting to know one another.
Of course, games are
not fun unless we
have prizes. Here are
the winners of this
year’s Bunco Night!
Keep a look out for
other Nurture team
events and bring your
entire family.

At Panera in Fox River Grove, As we discuss the book.
We Are Called to Rise by Laura McBride. “Your heart will break, then soar” (Redbook) when, far from the neon lights of the Vegas strip, three lives collide in a split-second mis-take and a child’s fate hangs in the balance. Avis thought her marriage had hit a tempo-rary rut. But with a single confession in the middle of the night, her carefully constructed life comes undone… Luis only wants to make the grandmother who raised him proud. As a soldier, he was on his way to being the man she taught him to be until he woke up in Walter Reed Hospi-tal with vague and troubling memories of how he got there... Every day, young Bashkim look forward to the quiet order of school and the kind instruc-tion of this third grade teacher…Bashkim open his heart to his pen pal, a US soldier. When these lives come together in a single, shocking moment, each character is called upon to rise. “You’ll be thinking about these characters long after you finish this haunting, heart-wrenching, and hopeful book” (Houston Chronicle).

Outreach Team
For the months of March and April the Outreach Team will be focusing on the Tree of Life Min-
istry. They are a part of the working hands and feet of God to the Lakota Nation residing on the
Rosebud reservation serving body, mind, and soul. They feed, clothe, shelter, and love. They
demonstrate HIS love, power, and grace to a broken, hurting society. Their purposes include:
1. To provide a ministry of service and presence in furtherance of the missions and outreach of
the United Methodist Church.
2. To provide opportunities to raise awareness of Lakota culture and foster relationships with
the Lakota People.
3. To help the most vulnerable members of the community meet their basic human needs in the
Rosebud Lakota Reservation (Sicangu Oyate) and surrounding communities and rural areas.
4. To facilitate communication between various service agencies and organizations as their ac-
tivities pertain to charitable and educational purposes and to encourage community involve-
ment to outreach projects.
If you would like to contribute, you can write a check to CUMC with the #123615 in the memo
line. Also we have “Tree of Life” pendants hand-crafted by Kim Brackett of K B Designs. Each
one is unique. For the cost of $30 you can pick from one of the Trees below. More than 80%
goes towards Tree of Life. Don’t forget Mother’s Day will be here soon! Also, keep an eye out
for news of our 2018 mission trip to Rosebud!

Vacation Bible School 2017 (VBS)
Monday, June 19- Friday, June 23
Our Summer VBS is one of the major ways Cary UMC reaches out to the families in our community. Through VBS, children can experience the love of God in fun and ex-periential ways. They even get to participate in missions, helping other children in a different part of the world. Our own youth and adults also have an opportunity to wit-ness to our community through their gifts. Would you like to be a part this great experience? We have plenty of opportunities for you to serve! Check out the "I Can Do This!" sign-up sheet in the attendance books in each pew on Sunday and the Nurture bulletin board. Let us know what you can do to support this very important ministry to our community! Registration has begun! Go to www.caryumc.org to register your kids! Registration closes, Sunday, June 7.

Confirmation Class of 2017
We spent a part of the day participating in their Make It, Take It, Eat It program, cooking
pizza, making Lemon Shake-ups and crafts.
We also gave the church a much-needed cleaning. We dusted, polished, swept the floor and moved furniture around. We were glad to serve our United Methodist family.
On Saturday, March 18, we went to our sister church, Redeemer Calvary United Meth-odist Church in Chicago, to spend a day learning about connectionalism. Connectional-ism means that no local church is the total body of Christ. All United Methodist Churches are connected by a common mission to love God and love our neighbors. We met with Pastor Shirley Pulgar-Hughes, who gave us a tour of the church and shared its history with us. While we were amazed at the size of the building, we were also sur-prised by all the repairs it needed.

Greetings CUMC Family from Zihuatanejo, Gro., Mexico
So many of you sent items, cash and prayers with me to this impoverished area which captured my heart years ago. Your generosity and good will have touched many lives here, all to the glory of the God we love and obey and in the name of Jesus. I under-stand fully now a saying I have heard over and over for many years; God doesn’t call the equipped. He equips the called. He has led me on many unexpected, unplanned, and unpleasant paths these last 6 weeks; however, it’s been a grand adventure and, I believe, the blessings I have received along this journey are too numerous to count. I have relied on your prayers for my endurance, answered prayer, indeed.
¡Muchas Gracias! Mi corazón rebosa de gratitud.
