EDITORIAL

Welcome back for our second newsletter for the year.

A few things have been on the move since our last newsletter.

We have been able to secure a more permanent spot to hold our meetings and workshops, more of this on the next page.

We held our Joy Eagles workshop at Helen & Ken’s home on 11 March to which there were 8 people attend, both members and non-members. We had a couple of ladies inquire as to member-ship of our branch.

We have also had members entering the Sydney Royal Easter Show, members enjoying a cruise and members attending work-shops in Albury with Margie Carter learning the finer points of making a 3D drag-on and a 3D elephant.

We will get some reports on these events at our next meeting.

If there is anything you would like to see in our newsletter or if you have an arti-cle that you think maybe interesting then please forward it to the Secretary.

Hope we see you soon until then stay safe and happy decorating.

MEMBER PROFILE: Sue Burke

I have been making and decorating cakes since 1977,

following on the family tradition of decorating cakes

like my Grandmother before me. I enrolled in a night

Cake Decorating certificate course at Penrith TAFE,

and completed this in 1989 with 1st place and a high

distinction grade; I wanted to know so much more. I

was like a big sponge in a small bucket of water at

that time. There was nothing like what there is today

in the way of cutters and moulds, let alone pettinice

by the box and now in comes in colours too. Coloured

chalks were all we had and we had to scrape these

extra fine with a scalpel to achieve the results we got.

Shimmers were non-existent as were gel colours,

sprays, lace moulds, covered boards and information.

I have been a branch member of the Camden, Goul-

burn and Wagga Branches of the Cake Decorators

Guild of NSW for over 20 years, holding the positions

of Vice President, Delegate and Secretary for the

Wagga Wagga Branch. My main love is in Sugar Art

and Novelty Work.

I opened my own cake business in Penrith in 1989, working from home as I had small children at the time and working full time as an apprentice Pastry Chef in a busy Restaurant. I have been a long time serving member of the Wagga Show Society and I am also the Head Show Steward in the Decorated Cakes Section since 1998. In 2006, I completed the NSW Cake Decorators Guild Judges Course. I have judged at numerous Country and Re-gional shows throughout NSW,CDG “Challenge events” as a Judge and an Over Judge, and various in-house branch competitions within NSW and ACT.

At the present time, I work from home running a very successful children’s birthday party business, along with my cake decorating business. My other interests lie in genealogy and I have been tracing my family’s roots, along with my mother’s help, since I was 13 years old. She has since sadly passed away so it is now up to me to . Oh yes… I do have several convicts (earliest is from the 4thFleet) in my family and very proud of it too!

NEWS FLASH

WE HAVE A NEW HOME!!!! A week or so ago we approached Kooringal Community Hub with the view to holding our meetings and workshops at their premises. We are pleased to report that they have agreed to let us use their facilities. There is no fee for the use and we can use all of the kitchen facilities, computers, internet. The address is Wilga Street, Kooringal, just behind Zeigler Ave and the Zeigler store. So our very first meeting to be held there will be on Sunday 30 April 2017 commencing at 10.00 am followed by lunch and our work-shop. Helen Robinson will be showing us how to create the “Wedgewood” look.

JOKES AND QUIZ CORNER

WOMEN'S REVENGE

'Cash, check or charge?' I asked, after folding items the woman wished to purchase.

As she fumbled for her wallet, I noticed a remote con-trol for a

television set in her purse. So, do you always carry your TV remote?' I asked.

'No,' she replied, 'but my husband refused to come shopping with me, and I figured this was the most evil thing I could do to him legally.'

WORDS

A husband read an article to his wife about how many words women use a day.

30,000 to a man's 15,000. The wife replied, 'The reason has to be because we have to repeat everything to men...

The husband then turned to his wife and asked, 'What?'

Crusting White Chocolate Buttercream 1 1/4 cup Crisco 4 oz cream cheese 1/4 cup unsalted butter 8 oz white baking chocolate (not chips) 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar 2 Tbsp meringue powder 2 tsp vanilla Instructions:

Cream Crisco, cream cheese and butter together in te mixer. Over a double boiler melt the white chocolate and set aside to cool. With the mixer on low, slowly pour the white chocolate into the creamed mixture and add the vanilla. Incorporate the sifted powdered sugar and meringue powder to form a smooth buttercream. The icing is a medium consistency. This can be used to make roses or thinned with water for easy icing. The icing crusts nicely in the fridge and is smooth for piping and decorating. The white chocolate lends an understated decadent taste while the addition of the cream cheese cuts the sweetness. The colour is a light golden cream but takes gel colours easily
