From the Desk of Our Principal

1

Greetings!

Well, here we are at the end of the school year – and what a year it has been!

For those of you that have been following the life of our school, you know of our academic, athletic and extracurricular successes this year. We are the 2017-2018 Centennial League champions in Boys’ Soccer, Girls’ Tennis, and Girls’ Golf; we are the State Champions in Girls’ Golf and 4-Speaker Debate; we are Regional Champions in Boys’ Soccer and Girls’ Bowling; we are the Sub-State champions in Volleyball. Our spring sports are in full swing and doing quite well!

Our extra-curricular and co-curricular programs continue to flourish. Our Air Force JROTC unit received “Exceeds Standards” on their evaluation earlier this year. Our Band recently completed a fabulous trip to Orlando, Florida. 152 band students participated in the ‘You’re Instrumental’ Workshop as a combined concert band at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and marched down Main Street in the Magic Kingdom Parade. Our Debate and Forensics squads have won close to 500 team and individual awards this year. We are currently ranked 7th in the nation in terms of our chapter strength (a combination of number of competitors and success) with the National Speech and Debate Association. Add to that qualifying 18 students who will go on the represent us at the National Tournament in Fort Lauderdale this summer, and one quickly realizes that the parents, staff, students and community which WRHS serves have much to be proud of. It has been a truly exciting year!

Of course, this time of year also brings a great sense of excitement and anticipation for the upcoming summer months. In the past, some of this excitement has been shown in ways that reflected poorly on our school – most notably the graffiti that frequently appears on road signs, streets and the personal property of homeowners in the district. It is disheartening to receive calls from the community when this occurs – particularly from the elderly, many of whom are not physically able to remove the graffiti themselves. If we all communicate the costs of such behavior, I am sure we can collectively address this concern in an effective manner!

On behalf of the staff at WRHS, I would like to wish you the best of summers! It has been an honor and pleasure working with you this year.

Best,

Ed [email protected]

CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATIONSponsored by:

Join the Junior Blue

Crew!

As our year comes to a close, here is our recap of how the 2017-2018 school year treated the WRHS Bank. We opened 95 new accounts, spoke to the entire Class of 2021 about financial success and the options they have at WRHS for accomplishing this—including business classes and saving money at the WRHS Bank—and continued processing all credit card transactions for The Shack and Common Grounds.

This year we were fortunate enough to get support from many local businesses for our Junior Blue Crew monthly giveaways. These businesses include The Blue Moose, Eagle Auto Wash, Five Guys, PKMR Engineers, Cambridge Quartz and Granite, GreatLife, HyVee, Papa Murphy’s, Cold Stone Creamery, Mikoleit & Associates, Sheridan’s Frozen Custard, and the WRHS PTO. We thank these community members for their support, without their generous donations the Junior Blue Crew would not be possible. The grand prize drawing for the Junior Blue Crew is quickly approaching. We are all eagerly looking forward to this $500.00 giveaway.

Our main pride at the WRHS Bank is our customers. This year we were able to continue serving the WRHS PTO by processing all of the cash for the concession stands at WRHS. We also were able to serve the WRHS Drama department by selling tickets for their fall and spring plays, as well as their two musicals this school year. We were able to serve multiple sports teams by collecting money for their annual banquets. We were also able to serve WRHS STUCO by selling dance tickets to homecoming, formal, and prom. Last, but certainly not least, we were able to serve our WRHS Student and Staff customers.

This year our amazing bank staff included President Mindy McKinley, Vice President Parker Beal, William Baker, Abby Glynn, Jackson Glynn, Haley Hutton, Anna Parish, and Baylie Sigmund. Lauren Florea and Emma Getsinger were auditors. Mrs. Teresa Golden was the bank sponsor.

Thank you to our customers, staff members, and sponsors for an amazing year.

Congratulations WRHS Art Students

We wanted to take a minute to share how proud we are of our talented art students who were recognized this year in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Out of the 2,300 entries received at the Regional level, we had 14 students recognized. As a school we received 13 Honorable Mentions, 2 Silver Keys, and 4 Gold Keys.

All of the Gold Keys from every region of the country go on to the National level, and we had one student, Ben Tilghman, receive a National Silver Medal!

Linked below is a short video that showcases all of the award winning artwork. Please join us in congratulating these students for all of their hard work!
