This assessment is administered to all Grade 3 and Grade 6 students at Bayview Glen P.S. and in Ontarios other publicly funded school system by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO), an independent agency of the Government of Ontario. While the exact dates for the administration of Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics, Primary Division and Junior Division are still being finalized by the school, we would kindly ask that you avoid planning appointments, vacations or breaks that may make your child absent during this two week period. And to ush- er in the new season, we held our huge- ly successful Spring Fling fundraiser, which culminated in an amazing School Dance hosted by Bounce Entertain- ment. With your support and generosity, we raised close to $10,000! Thank you Bayview Glen P.S.! We look forward to sharing with our community about the technologies and program enhance- ments we invest in for our students in the months ahead. Spring also means that we are entering into the final three months of the school year, our busiest time. As a school, we continue to work on supporting student learning and well-being, while at the same time, we are beginning to plan for many facets of the 2019-2020 year ahead. But by no stretch of the imagination is the school year even close to being done! Youll be happy to hear that there are still many exciting school events planned for the weeks and months ahead including a number of Spirit Days, an author visit on April 11th (Grades 3-6), a Spring Book Fair start- ing on April 23rd, a Welcome to Kin- dergarten evening on May 2nd (for new students registering for kindergarten), a school-wide talent show as well as a production of Shrek the Musical (dates to be set). And as always, our School Council re- mains very active and is planning for its annual community Fun Fair, scheduled for June 12th. Administrator’s Message While it still doesn’t quite feel like it out-side, Spring is indeed here. And to ush-er in the new season, we held our huge-ly successful Spring Fling fundraiser, which culminated in an amazing School Dance hosted by Bounce Entertain-ment. With your support and generosity, we raised close to $10,000! Thank you Bayview Glen P.S.! We look forward to sharing with our community about the technologies and program enhance-ments we invest in for our students in the months ahead.

Summer Institute Program Looking for summer learning and fun activities for students entering Senior Kinder-garten to Grade 8? Summer Institute offers academic, recreational and athletic programs and activities with intentional links to the Ontario Curriculum. The pro-gram runs for six weeks during July and August. It is offered at 11 school sites across York Region.

International and Indigenous Languages Program 2019-2020 Did you know that the International and Indigenous Languages (IIL) Program provides children with the opportunity to read, write and speak a new language or maintain heritage language and culture and has over 20 languages to choose from? IIL Program Registration for the 2019-2020 school year will begin on Thursday, April 11, 2019. To facilitate registration on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at 4:00 pm, online registration will be available for the first time through Edsby on YRDSB's International and Indige-nous Languages (http://www.yrdsb.ca/Programs/ConEd/Pages/International-Languages.aspx) page.

Currently there are approximately 15,000 students registered in International and Indigenous Languages programs across the Board. Students from SK to Grade 8 are eligible to take language classes that run once a week during weekday evenings (from Tuesday to Friday) or Saturday mornings for two and a half hours. There are many new and exciting things in store for the upcoming 2019-2020 school year, such as the opportunity to learn the Indigenous languages Ojibwe and Cree. Please note that due to space limitations, registration applications will take place on a first-come-first-serve basis. Classes may be cancelled due to low enrolment or lack of teacher availability.

There are many opportunities to engage your chil-dren in conversations about money. From a very young age children are interested in learning about money and leveraging these conversations can have lifelong benefits. From learning the value of coins and dollars, to budgeting and finances, talking about money supports many different mathematical concepts (e.g., adding, subtracting, percentages and estimation). Here is a parent guide with more information about supporting financial literacy at home: http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/parents/financial_literacy_parent_guide_en.pdf. Among oth-er things, it points out that “financial literacy builds students’ understanding of personal finances, the local and global economy and the results of their choices as consumers” (p. 1). Financial Literacy - Learning About Math and Money

Help in Planning for 2019—2020!

Our school is well underway in planning for 2019- 2020. In some respects, the work we do now in the

offices is especially important, because our accuracy with anticipated enrollment helps us better plan,

and optimistically, minimizes the need to move students across classes (‘reorganize’) in September.

We’ve been especially fortunate this past year to have had only minimal reorganization to classes,

though it is important to recognize this is always a possibility in any given year, especially as enroll-

ments decline overall in the community.

We would ask our community for its help in this work!

If you know you will be moving out of the area in the months

ahead, please let the office know as soon as possible, to help

us be accurate with our enrollment estimates. Similarly, if you

have a child who will be joining us at the school for the first

time in junior kindergarten and have yet to register, we would

ask you to do so at your earliest convenience. And if you meet

someone moving into the community, encourage them to reg-

ister sooner rather than later!

Monthly Wellness Tip

Head injuries are the leading cause of serious injury and death to kids on wheels. Wearing a properly fitted, certified helmet can reduce the risk of serious head injury by 85 per cent. Children and youth under 18 years of age are required by law to wear a helmet when bicycling. Helmets must fit properly to protect your child in the event of a crash.

Remember the 2V1 Shake, Shake, Shake rule:

2: The helmet should cover the top of your child’s head and sit two finger widths above his or her eyebrows. A helmet that is too big will not provide proper protection

V: Adjust the side straps so they form a V-shape under your child’s ears 1: Only one finger should fit between your child’s chin and the fastened straps Shake, Shake, Shake: Have your child shake his or her head up and down and side to side to make sure

the helmet is snug

Skateboarding safety

Skateboarding is a great way for children to be physically active. However, it involves a tricky combination of balance, coordination and speed on hard surfaces, so there is always the risk of injury. Injuries from falls are common due to a child’s limited judg-ment skills and strength, and the challenge of maneuvering a skateboard on pavement. Younger children have slower reaction times and a higher centre of gravity, and chil-dren and youth who skateboard in the street are at an increased risk of being hit by motor vehicles. Tips: Always supervise children between the ages of five to 10 Make sure children wear skateboard helmets and other protective gear such as elbow pads, knee pads and

wrist guards Go to a supervised skate park, or find places for your child to ride such as playgrounds, parks and rinks

School Organization Determining preliminary class placements for September begins during the month of April and continue well into June before being finalized. Having worked with your child throughout the year, your child’s teacher has developed a good understanding of his or her strengths and areas for growth. In consultation with grade team partners, appropriate support staff and administration, we are begin-ning to put together classes for next year, considering many criteria, among them providing for gender balance, a range of academic abilities, and ensuring there are good learning partners for all students. Social dynamics are considered, as well, though the central concern is developing classes that provide for an effec-tive learning environment. To this end, we do not accept requests for particular teachers or for students to be placed with certain groups of friends. As you can appreciate in a smaller school such as ours, creating balanced classes is a significant task, and is done with care. Teaching assignments and our school organization for next year have yet to be finalized, and will be subject to ongoing revisions over the summer and even in September, giv-en potential changes in student enrolment and Ministry mandates and policies around class sizes.
