Now that the weather is finally showing signs of warming up, we would like to remind you of our Dress Code.
All clothing must fully cover the midriff, buttock and chest area with an opaque material. No language or images depicting drugs, alcohol, profanity, or violence. Students found wearing inappropriate clothing will be asked to cover up or call home for a change of clothes.
Thank you in advance for your support.
"Hi! My name is Samantha Langer. I grew up in a town
in northern Alberta called Slave Lake. I started my
degree at Red Deer College and graduated with my
Bachelor of Elementary Education from the University
of Alberta. I love to spend my free time with my
animals, dancing or out on a golf course. I am so happy
to be working at Cremona School for the remainder of
the year and I can't wait to meet everyone that is a part
of the Cremona School community!

From the Principal’s Desk Social media has become an increasing influence in our society these days, particularly for
our students and last month we were fortunate to host a Safer Schools Presentation for
grades 7-12, teachers and parents. Some of our students had the privilege of attending
further training on internet safety, responsible social media use and digital footprints.
They will be presenting what they learned to the younger grades.
Students often encounter problems when social media and personal devices are not used
appropriately. One of the suggestions for the parents who attended the social media
presentation was to do regular checks of your child’s personal device to see what they are
posting, receiving, messaging, sharing or taking pictures of.
A person’s “digital footprint” starts earlier in their lives than it used to due to increased
access to technology. It is very important that students are informed, responsible and
ready to engage in the online world. Once something has been posted on the internet or
shared on social media or even private messaged, it is there to stay, and can affect a
person’s life many years later.
The internet operates 24 hours a day and screen time amongst students continues to
rise. Children should have defined boundaries around when and where is appropriate to
access the digital world. We encourage families to ensure ‘down time’ for children to
disconnect from social media and just be themselves.
Even though devices in our school are monitored and our internet is safe, social media
issues from outside of school affect us here at school. Please assist us in helping our
students be safe online.
Just a reminder that spring is here (maybe?) and that we do have a dress code at
school. We do ask that students dress appropriately for ‘work’.
Still waiting for those May flowers!

Bouquets & Celebrations We had a great turnout to our meeting, hopefully parents left
with a better understanding of what we do in High School and hopefully the students left with a better idea of how to maximize achievement in the next 3 years. We want them to have as many choices as possible for life after Cremona School and the process starts in Grade 10! Call me with your questions! Mme. Dougherty
A huge and very grateful thank you to The Sutter Fund and the
Diegel Family for their cash donations to the school's Breakfast Program. Students and staff alike are very appreciative that breakfast is available, due in part to the thoughtfulness of people like them! Thanks again!
Thanks to Mme. Dougherty for all of you work in organizing the Western Heritage Day
Thank you to our amazing bus drivers who always do their jobs with a smile and keep our children safe. Thanks for making it look effortless!
We would like to wish Mrs. Nickel all the best as she begins her new family! We will miss you!
We would like to welcome our newest staff member to the Cremona School team. Miss Langer will be taking Mrs. Nickel's position for the remainder of the year.
A special thanks to Rocky Dave owner of the Cremona Bottle Depot (he counts our school's bottles). On April 10, he came into Gr.5 and taught us about starting a small business and doing math on the job. We peppered him with questions and he enjoyed answering!

Counsellor’s Corner
WORLD OF CHOICES CAREER FORUM 2019
Cochrane Ranchehouse
What a great opportunity for our students! The majority of our grade 10s and most of the grade 11s attended this “round table” event on April 3rd. It was a chance to listen and ask questions to about 35 people involved in many different careers! A Private Investigator, “Forestry”, Dental Assistant, The Zoo, Mechanical Engineer, Physiotherapist, Fire Fighter, Paramedic, Powerline Technician, Photographer, Project Manager, Journalist, Vet, and the Armed Forces were only a few! The students were able to choose the table/career and then switched after about 10 minutes. There were lots of prizes to be won and lunch was excellent! This was a free event due to the contributions of local businesses and individuals in Cochrane and was organized by the Junior Achievement Southern Alberta. We were lucky to have been invited and I’m very proud of our students taking the time to research their futures and careers! As always, they were great ambassadors for our school! R. Dougherty
GRADE 12 PARENTS: Grade 12 students who have committed to any post-secondary— you should apply for RUTHERFORD SCHOLARSHIP in late Spring or Summer. There are no set deadlines any-more. Go to Alberta Student Aid, you must apply online. Please note that IF your teenager takes a “year off” and THEN attends post-secondary, he/she will still qualify depending on marks. They will apply when they decide to return to school. “Rutherford scholarship” is available to any Alberta student who had 75% and over in 5 subjects (including options) in grades 10, 11, and 12. THEY MUST BE ATTENDING A POST-SECONDARY TO GET THE MONEY. Even if your teenager says “My marks aren’t good enough!”, he or she should still apply as even work experience marks are included!! The form can be found in the Scholarships area of the ALIS website. Our school code is “5103” and it takes about 10 minutes to complete online. If you have any questions, please contact me.
As the Academic Advisor, I’m always looking for ways to assist, educate, and improve on career and post-secondary selection of our students, be it a job, university, or college. Each month I ask
someone “how can our school best prepare students for “life after high school?” I have asked for answers from many people - a recent university grad, an elementary parent, a local employer. This month it was a university TA, the person who marks, answers questions and assists first year students with labs and course work.
Her response: “They have to work hard - I find many students WANT to do well, they expect good grades but are sometimes not willing to put in the time it takes to study and complete assignments.” University isn’t always hard but it’s a lot of work!”

LEADERSHIP UPDATE
Spring is here and we are ready to dive into an exciting month! We are hoping that the spring weather is here to stay and will be planning to start our gardening soon. Now that we may be able to wear shorts again, let’s show off our socks on “Crazy Sock Day”!
We had a great time at the middle school dance last month, thanks to all that came out to have some fun.
We would like to take a moment to recognize our wonderful bus drivers. You are an amazing team and we cannot thank you enough for your dedication to your jobs. Thank you for keeping our most precious cargo safe and sound!
The role of School Council is to inform parents, school staff, students and community members so we can work together to enhance the student experience. School Council offers advisory input to school administration.
The presentation at the April meeting was by the Safer Schools organization. They had presented to various grades and staff during the day and then tailored an evening presentation to parents. It was quite amazing to be reminded of the amount of information embedded in any quick photo, and the potential compromises that could result. And how many times do we need to be reminded that ‘delete’ does not often guarantee that we have erased something? Karma exists with a smart phone – what you wished you hadn’t said may well come back to bite you.
Our May meeting will give the administration the opportunity to explain the financial side of school life. How do they allocate their budget resources? Where does the money go?
The grades 9 and 10 will be participating in ‘Spring Sweep”. This gives them an opportunity to raise funds for their grad by undertaking jobs for those in the community. Give me a call if you have a job that you would like some help with.
Thank-you for wanting to take an active involvement in your child’s education.
Contact Michael with any questions at 637-3973 or [email protected]
Congratulations to all of our badminton athletes on a
wonderful season this year. Of our 10 senior badminton
athletes, seven of them qualified for zones in
Strathmore. We also had a very strong showing with our
Junior athletes and we wish Riley Harms the best of
luck at zones as well. With the unpredictable Spring
weather we're starting our track season a little bit late
but we're hoping to get going and have another great
season with that as well. Good luck to all of our athletes
in the upcoming track season!

Ensuring the highest levels of safety A Message from the Superintendent Everyone in Chinook’s Edge works extremely hard to maintain the high standards of safety that has allowed our
division to achieve COR (Certificate of Recognition) status for several years now. Our annual external safety audit is
currently underway and, although final results are still a few weeks away, the division’s past scores have reached over
90 percent. This is an achievement which is continually impressive to auditors, and Chinook’s Edge is known across
the province for our efforts to surpass safety standards in our schools and departments. This diligent attention to safety is practiced in every classroom, at every building and on every school ground in our
division. Our staff members maintain a strictly itemized safety protocol, and each step plays an important part of this
overall priority in Chinook’s Edge. We are pursuing optimum safety because we care about the people in our facilities
– our students, staff, parents, volunteers and guests – and this priority ensures everyone continues to thrive in our safe
and caring schools. Kurt Sacher Superintendent of Schools
Election Update from the Board of Education:
Greetings:
We wanted to thank you for your interest in our Board’s information campaign prior to the provincial election. We
heard from many of you and are pleased that our Board’s priorities for Education became part of your discussions and
reflections leading up to the election.
The Board has sent letters of congratulations to Alberta’s Premier-designate and the three MLAs who have jurisdiction
in our school division. We look forward to working with them and the entire legislative assembly to ensure adequate
supports for the students and school communities we serve. We wish each of them every success in their important
roles, and we thank each of you for your continued involvement in moving our division forward.
Colleen Butler, Chair
Chinook’s Edge Board of Education
