April 2020 1

From the Readers– Hilary SuttonI am an avid watcher for the Spring! From the minute the Christmas deco-rations come down and everythinglooks a bit drab, I’m on the look-outfor signs that winter really won’t lastfor ever – it just feels that way! Cat-kins, flowers and bird song all reassureme that Spring is on its way.

It is a natural thing, I think, to look forsigns of new life, particularly after thebleakness of winter. In former times, the signs of new growth were to becelebrated, as the food stored to getthrough the winter months was run-ning low and green shoots meant thatmore could soon be grown. Eggs arean ancient symbol of new life, firstpainted or dyed and latterly madefrom chocolate and devoured in theirthousands as part of Easter celebra-tions.

The Christian festival of Easter ofcourse, also happens in Spring. This isbecause it celebrates the events sur-rounding Passover in Jerusalem morethan 2,000 years ago and Passover is aSpring festival in the Jewish calendar.Secular Easter cards may be coveredwith pictures of flowers, chicks, lambsand that strange phenomenon, theEaster bunny, but Christian cards willoften show another and rather sur-prising symbol of new life – surprisingbecause it was, in fact, an instrument

of torture and death used by the Ro-mans. I’m talking, of course, about thecross – that most recognisable of allChristian symbols because it was on across that Jesus suffered and died onthe first Good Friday.

But why, then, do I call it a symbol ofnew life? I can say this because Jesus’death on the cross wasn’t the end ofthe story. Three days later, his disci-ples discovered the tomb where hisbroken body had been laid was emptyand angels told them that Jesus wasnot dead but alive. Understandablyslow to believe they soon met the ris-en Jesus many times – not dead butvery much alive, cooking and eatingbreakfast with them on one occasion!

Christians believe that in dying, Jesusremoved the barrier between humanbeings and God – the barrier that wecreate by our inability to stop gettingthings wrong, behaving in ways weknow aren’t right or kind. He took thepunishment that we should receiveand then he rose again, he defeateddeath, he is the ultimate symbol ofnew life. This is not something hekeeps to himself – it is something he

offers to anyone who believes in himand what he did for them. I don’t thinkit is uncommon for people to wishsometimes that they could just startover again. It is a futile wish on ourown but with Jesus, it is a reality. ThisEaster, as the world around us turnsgreen and blooms and lambs jump inthe fields, maybe you would like to findout more about this gift of new lifethat Jesus holds out to you.

If you would, come along to one of theEaster services and celebrate with us.Ask us questions about how we feltnew life start within us, as we becameChristians – everyone will have a dif-ferent story but everyone will be ableto tell you what a difference it hasmade to them. Happy Easter!

Memorial ServiceOn Sunday 26th April at 6 pm we will hold the first of this year's MemorialServices. These services are an opportunity to remember and give thanks forthe lives of the people whom we love and who have died.

Anyone who has arranged a funeral through our clergy in the past 12-18 monthswill receive a personal invitation, but the service (like all services at St Andrews)is open to anyone who would like to come. It does not matter how long agoyou lost the person you will want to remember; grief does not know any timelimits.

The service will include hymns, prayers, a talk and time for quiet reflection as weremember our loved ones. A Roll of Remembrance is read out, during whichyou will have the opportunity to light a candle and (if you wish) place a flowerthat you have brought; if you would like a name included on the Roll pleasecontact the Church Office on 01892 837617. However, you are most welcomejust to come and remember someone privately as well. We have held theseservices for many years and people frequently say how helpful they find them asthey come to terms with the loss of someone precious.

We look forward to welcoming you.

Fair Trade MusingsHaving just returned from the 8 o’clock Holy Communion service, I found myselfcontemplating Peter’s Hungerford-Welch’s words, how Jesus was tempted in thedesert and how we as individuals can use this to think about our environmentalimpact on the world during Lent.

On getting home, I flicked on the kettle, being careful to put in just the right amountof water to fill our cafetière and got the Fairtrade ground coffee out of the fridge. The packet was marked £3.90, I sighed as the price of coffee is constantly going up.However, thinking about it, I paid £3.90 for a large decaf skinny latte in town theother day. Yes, it was lovely, but it got me thinking exactly how many coffees can Iget out of one bag of ground coffee from the Fairtrade shop? 20-30 I would guess?Surely this is the best way to look after our environment? Shop locally, shopFairtrade - producers can enjoy a secure and sustainable livelihood, and together wecan help lessen the impact on the environment.

Also, that bag of Fairtrade coffee for £3.90, or box of 1000 Fairtrade teabags for£24.60 is not just a single cup of tea or coffee. It’s 1000 opportunities to have afriend over, put the kettle on and catch up on their news, listen to someone, or justsit back and contemplate Sunday’s sermon. Surely this has a bigger impact and is somuch more than a quick decaf skinny latte on the go!

(And why not grab a box of Fairtrade cookies at £1.60 to go with it - cheaper than aflapjack at Starbucks!!!)

Taketime is a Fresh Expression ofChurch, inspired by IgnatianSpirituality. It enables people to meetwith Jesus in their imagination and tofind a nondirective, experiential, transformational spiritual reality.Taketime meditations use yourimagination to provide a calm, comfortable space in which to meetGod. Anyone can use thesemeditations, regardless of backgroundor religion, and you can meditateanywhere you like.

Taketime provide guided 5, 10, 15 or20 minute meditations- they areavailable on the Taketime website:www.taketime.org.uk or bydownloading the app, TaketimeSpiritual Meditations (Android and

IOS). It is also possible for us to lookinto developing a local TaketimeTogether Group to be led in themeditations.

The website and the app providemeditations on episodes of Jesus’s lifein the order that they appear in thegospels. A new meditation is addedevery week.

The biggest problem for many of uswhen we try and meditate is stayingfocussed.  Ignatian meditation uses theimagination to construct a settingwhich becomes the backdrop forthe experience and helps with thatfocus.

At the heart of Taketime is theIgnatian idea of an imagined encounterwith the Jesus of the Bible in which weare invited to step into an episodefrom the New Testament and imaginea conversation with Jesus. The sessionsenable you to imagine a setting inwhich you encounter Jesus.  You arethen given an opportunity to speak to

him and then to hear him answeringyou.

The 5-minute version is simply animaginative encounter. The 10- minuteversion adds to this a relaxationexercise and a few moments to rest inGod’s presence. The 15-minuteversion adds more space in which torest in God’s presence. The 20-minuteversion adds to this an option to goback into the story and imagine whoyou might be, how that might feel and

what God mightbe saying to youthrough theexperience.

How do Iknow thatJesus isspeaking tome? You don’t.It could be God,or it could bewishful or

destructive thinking on your part.Because God is Love, a genuinemessage will never be destructive.Challenging, maybe, but notdestructive.

Ask yourself if what God seems to besaying is what a loving and wise parentwould say to their child or if it agreeswith the teaching outlined by Jesus.  Ifso, then there is every chance that it isGod speaking to you.  If not, put itdown to your imagination.  If in doubt, speak to someone with spiritualwisdom, perhaps a Christian ministeror friend.  You will gradually grow inconfidence in discerning what is fromGod.

The introductory meditation takes 5minutes to experience, why not give ita try?

A Note from the Taketime team:  Ifyou suffer from serious psychologicalissues or mental health problems youshould already have some professionalmental health support. If youexperience emotional discomfortduring these meditations, stop whatyou’re doing and talk to your doctoror mental health provider. Taketime issupported by the Mission in BritainFund of the Methodist Church.

BerekoExciting things are happening inBereko!

The best news is that there hasbeen a good amount of rain, sothank you all for your prayers, they have been answered. Pleasedo keep praying though because, in some parts of the Diocese the rain has beentoo heavy and caused flooding and building collapses. Thankfully, Bereko seems tohave escaped the worst of this but do please continue asking God to give themgood rain! It is now harvest time, so the rain is vital for the crops to ripen.

Our soup lunch, in February, run by Rachel Smith was a great success as always. Itraised over £350 and importantly raised awareness of our companion link withBereko. It was great fun! Our next awareness raising activity will be a spongestation at the Paddock Wood Half Marathon, and then the Bereko section withinthe Churches Together stand at the Paddock Wood carnival in July.

Barbara Farnham is very busy as the purveyor extraordinaire of Bereko palmcrosses! She has already sold 4,000 so far thisyear and we have also sold 10,000 to ChurchHouse Bookshop, Westminster. We buy thecrosses from the Bereko church family duringvisits and they use the income to fund theirchurch projects.

You may remember that last April, we fundeda two-day study trip for seven Bereko eldersto nearby Babati. They visited communitydevelopment projectsrun by LivingstoneTanzania Trust, a UK

charity. The elders found the visit inspirational and decidedto register their own group called: the ‘Bereko GardenGroup’, with the government. This is necessary for thegroup to have a bank account and brings with it, sensiblerules about how the bank account must be managed.

Membership of the Bereko Garden Group includes the localMuslim elders, the primary and secondary school head teachers and Rev RichardSuki, all working together for the benefit of the community.

The Group’s first project is anexemplar agricultural project beingdeveloped on an acre of land, donated rent free by the previousChair of the Town Council. Thepurpose of the project is twofold:to demonstrate and teach goodpractice to community members, and for profits to be used to fundcommunity projects.

Between St Andrew’s Church andthe Bereko Community

Partnership, we have sent £5,000 topurchase equipment, seeds etc to theLivingstone Tanzania Trust, who areproject managing and training for thefirst two years.

We are next visiting Bereko inOctober and hope to see a flourishingmarket garden by then!

And a final note … please put Saturday16th May 2020 in your diary – it is ourannual quiz night to raise funds forBereko.

‘The Duke’ and the King of KingsIn 1967 ten thousand people packed into the New York Cathedral to hear theDuke Ellington Orchestra. This was the Duke’s second sacred concert the thirdtook place in Westminster Abbey just 6 months before he died. What aremarkable man. From the seedy jazzclubs in 1920’s Harlem to the world’sbiggest Cathedral six decades later.Along with America’s highest civilianaward and doctorates in music, DukeEllington is now recognised as one ofAmerica’s greatest composers.

In 1962 Ellington was approachedabout performing at the opening ofSan Francisco Grace Cathedral. A‘Festival of Grace’ had been plannedfor the opening celebration. This wasto include performances of Britten’sWar Requiem, J.S Bach’s ChristmasOratorio and a sacred concertfeaturing Duke Ellington’s Big Band. He said of the sacred concerts, ‘they werethe most important thing I have ever done, now I can say out loud what I havebeen saying on my knees for years.’ He never made a secret about his biblereading and praying, it was embedded in his life.

A Forty-Year PartnershipHe was nick-named ‘the duke’ by his school friends. His conversation wasarticulate and engaging with a childlike spontaneity. He cherished his bandmembers. They were soloists in their own right and audiences came specially tohear them and they stayed with him because of the rapport they enjoyed asmusicians. He wrote and arranged his music to match their individual musicalstrengths. In 1938 a young Billy Strayhorn met up with Ellington. Strayhorn hadstudied as a classical pianist and composer. He left college when he realised thatbeing black meant there was no future for him in classical music. At his firstmeeting with the Duke he imitated Duke’s actual style of piano playing. Then heplayed the same song in a new key with different chords and the Dukeimmediately recognised that Strayhorn was special and invited him to join theorchestra. They stayed working together for forty years. Billy Strayhorn andDuke Ellington wrote well over 3000 compositions and even today it’s notknown who wrote which one, their styles became so entwined.

‘Such Sweet Thunder’Duke Ellington preferred to call his music American music rather than jazz. Asthe band found acclaim all over the world their music became more substantialwith some of their compositions over an hour long. When the band was touringin Canada they were playing in Ontario at the same time as the StratfordShakespeare Theatre. Duke Ellington met the theatre directors and talked aboutShakespeare and the plays. He then read them all and went on to compose atwelve-part seventy-minute Shakespeare Suite, for his band called ‘Such SweetThunder.’

‘There’s Something ‘bout Believing’Last summer the BBC Proms devoted a concert to Duke Ellington to re-enactmusic from his sacred concerts. The music was still big band, swing, withunderlying blues, gospel and improvisation. He was at the peak of his musiccareer but what made these concerts unforgettable was that his band music wassecondary to the words. The words were about God, the majesty of God, thelove of God, the life changing forgiving power of God. Words written by theDuke forged on the anvil of hard life experiences. Words from a man who lovedGod, devoured God’s word. A life that breathed prayer and despite deep moralflaws, knew God’s forgiveness. The message blazed out from band, choirs, soloists, dance, across the audience in the Albert Hall and to millions watchingon TV. Here is an example of the Duke’s lyrics: -

“Something ‘bout believing, that keeps unfolding. / Something ’bout believing that makesmy soul sing./ Something ‘bout believing that keeps me holding, Unto God Almighty. (atthis point the choir recites) -‘The silliest thing I ever read, was that someone said ‘God isDead.’ The mention of the first word automatically eliminates the second and the third!- / Something ‘bout believing that’s greater than pleasure/ Something ‘bout believingthat’s greater than treasure, / Something ‘bout believing that’s beyond measure, just oneGod Almighty.”

The duke had met the King, the King of Kings and life began to swing!
