Iniezione The newsletter of the NorthWest Alfa Romeo Club

T he last year has been anything but exciting. It has

been full of fear, regulations, ridiculous perceived

needs and the nature of humanity on horrific display.

While I have thrived in seclusion, I have missed many of the

social interactions that I used to take for granted. One of

those is a good group drive, and conversing with those like-

minded souls who are driven by

their love of cars.

I met “Panhard Paul” Melrose a

few years ago on an Alfa Romeo

club drive. I’d never seen a Pan-

hard before, and have only seen

one other since. It’s an amazing

French design, powered by a tiny

flat-twin engine, with design cues

from the aeronautical influences of the 1950s. Paul’s

PL17 Hot Tigre is a family treasure, and not only does

Paul drive it often he knows all the details about the car.

That knowledge is essential, since anywhere he drives it

looky-loos of all kinds have to ask, “What IS that?”

On March 21 Paul celebrated 10 years of the annual

Spring Drive he coordinates under the auspices of the North-

west Citroёn Owners Club, which always draws a unique

cadre of cars. This was my first one, and I was not let down

in any way. The event was well organized, the route planned

out to a tee, and the participants, both cars and drivers, were

very interesting, and not just the several Alfas that turned up.

At the top of the list was a pair of Citroёn SMs. Citroёns

are a rare breed to start with, and the SM is powered by a

Maserati 4-cam V6. So, a French car with

idiosyncratic hydraulic self-levelling suspen-

sion, powered by an Italian engine. What

could go wrong? The engineering in these

cars is from the beyond. These two, one

fuel-injected and one carbureted, were both

spectacular examples

with very knowledgea-

ble owners.

The SMs were

paired nicely with a

pair of Goddesses.

Yes, the sleek and

stylish Citroёn DS, a

car that holds a special place on many lists for beauty and

engineering milestones. Talking with one owner summed up

this French masterpiece, as he described the service manual

instructions on how to adjust the carburetor. It states clearly

to follow all steps, do all steps in order, and to not skip any

steps. This is then repeated in bold typeface. The first step:

adjust the clutch... Most of us would just throw our hands up

in despair and anguish, or, worse yet, disregard the strong

suggestion to do all the steps as written. An engi-

neer’s dream? A back yard mechanic’s nightmare.

But, as with Alfa Romeo, these owners are pas-

sionate about their cars.

Cleaning the Windshield Helps the View Ahead

W ith a year’s worth of Covid closures in our rear-

view mirror, and the front window needing to be

cleaned of all possible Covid dangers, it’s not com-

pletely clear what next month or the one after will look like. It

sure seems to be getting better. I got my vaccine shot and

many others have as well. As more get them over the next

few months our ability to safely gather will improve our vision.

Our hunger for gatherings and events may soon get satis-

fied. With our May track day on page 7, the Spring drive we

enjoyed in March, and the NWARC version of the Tulip Rallye

on April 24 (also on page 7) we’ll have choices. As the safety

improves, we will have great options for Vintage racing with

the Spokane Festival of Speed in early June. We’ll even host

our club meeting from Spokane in June.

In Seattle on the July 4th weekend, you can visit the PNW

Historics including the car corral. The rules will be different

this year; they won’t sell tickets at the gate (they must be pre-

purchased), you must wear masks, and perhaps even be as-

signed seats in the stands. We’ll have more info as we get

closer and can see through that windshield.

LeMay / America’s Car Museum Alfa Romeo Display

June 24th, 2021 through June 24th, 2022

O ur folks at the LeMay / America’s Car Museum in

Tacoma are putting on a great display of Alfa Romeo

history and style that will run for a year. Kicking off

with a big party on June 24th or 25th, the display will have a

few pre-war cars showing where the legend began. Alfa Ro-

meo’s rich history captured eyes while winning races and

hearts; the cars were the peak of style and performance.

The display will show this with multiple pre-war 8C and 6C

cars, as well as 1900s from the early post-war years. Then

as the 60s and 70s arrived, Alfa Romeo found fresh success

in racing with the Alfa TZ, TZ2, GTA, and GTAm… all on dis-

play as part of this show. “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday”

worked for Alfa as the street cars sold well, with GTVs, Spi-

ders, and Alfettas

standing proud in this

display. The movie

The Graduate also

helped people recog-

nize the brand, so we’ll

have a Duetto Spider

holding a spot.

The newer years

are well represented

with the 164 LS, Spi-

der Quad, 156 Sedan,

155Q4, 147 GTA, and GTV Coupe…

many of these not readily available in

the US but they were well loved in Eu-

rope. The plan is to also include an

8cCompetizione, 4C, Giulia QV, and

Stelvio so new offerings round out the

colorful Alfa history, making it easy to

see the link between then and now.

Though some are

cars we may never

have seen up close,

a few will be recog-

nizable. With so

many great Alfa club

members who love

their cars, there were

great cars to choose from, such as Kim Buty’s Montreal,

Georges Hebrant’s Alfetta Sprint Veloce and many more.

Plan to join the ACM if you’re not already a member, since

the display will refresh with new and different cars throughout

the timeline necessitating multiple visits. There will probably

be monthly Tech Talks throughout the year.

Once the museum finalizes their opening party plans, we’ll

setup an event to be part of it. If you have a car that you re-

ally think should be part of this display, let me know! In the

meantime, the ACM opens for business on April 2nd with lim-

ited days and hours (Fri, Sat, Sun, 10 am – 5 pm) until re-

gional Covid numbers improve even more. Keep being safe

and we get to enjoy more stuff.

Books You Really Should Own

M any of us have copies of Simon Moore’s fantastic

books detailing the his-

tory of select models

within Alfa Romeo’s history. The

Immortal 2.9, The Magnificent

Monoposto, and The Legendary

2.3 cover, in amazing detail, each

car produced, its ownership,

achievements, and status when

published. If you like the details, the slight differences be-

tween cars are there to be learned. If you like stories of why

it’s one way or another, it’s found in these books.

These books are running low on the shelves of Parkside

Publishers and soon there will be an announcement to that

effect. I’m sharing this now so you can jump inline ahead of

others and buy them. If you’re thinking, “I already have

these, why is Fred bugging me?” The answer is because you

may want to buy a book or two as gifts for others… for exam-

ple, my birthday is in January.

On the other end of the spectrum of cool but odd was a

Toyota Celica GT-Four in Castrol Racing livery from the Car-

los Sainz WRC era. It was a

hoot to keep pace with and a

head-turner at every corner.

There were some MGs, sev-

eral BMWs, and a few daily

drivers that filled in the blanks

on this rainy day. Not to be

forgotten was the only Toyota

Crown hearse I’ve ever seen. Morbid or not, this

slightly-smaller-than-a-Cadillac body hauler was as

pristine as a freshly embalmed corpse. It was

flanked by a Honda KEI van that hauled a very spe-

cial four-legged friend along for the ride.

By the end of the drive, my Porsche 911 and I al-

most felt normal. With our state

moving into Phase 3, it was quite

appropriate. This last year will

not be forgotten, even though we

might want to. As we return to

whatever the new normal is, I’m

glad that meeting new people,

sharing our love of cars and driv-

ing together has not been lost along the way.

Spring Out For a Much Needed Drive

The Citroёn line-up of a pair of DSs as well as two

SMs would be impressive any time, but as this

rainy, cold, March day was the annual Spring Drive they were

almost normal! With two Giulias, two Stelvios, one bright yel-

low 4C, a silver Milano and assorted Alfisti in other fun cars,

NWARC was well represented. In all, 39 cars and 61 people

showed up, an excellent turn-out!

Covid-19 fears may have kept some away but not many.

People seemed very hungry to get into their cars and enjoy

driving, scenery, other people, car sounds, or simply getting

out of their homes. They gathered (a bit closer than my com-

fort zone) and chatted through

masks, about their cars and

catching up on life. Some fa-

miliar faces were barely recog-

nizable now they’re a year old-

er and half-covered with safety

masks. A couple of people

recognized me only on the

second pass!

Paul handed out his route guides to the crowd and went

over oddities or details. I’d also entered it into Rallista so peo-

ple with iPhones had a digital option.

At 10:15 in the morning we hit the road, heading west over

Newport Hills, then skirting the May Creek area back

east before following the May Valley Road. This area

has a rich coal mining history, but the route passed

through with little hint of that except the blip of a com-

munity known as Coalfield, now mainly just a quiet

intersection.

From there, we dropped down into the Cedar River

and followed up towards Maple Val-

ley, followed by twisty roads out past

Ravensdale where we made a pleas-

ant 8 mile loop out to the Kangley

and Kanaskat areas. This brought us

back to our first stop, at Black Dia-

mond, another key mining town,

whose bakery had yummy donuts

and snacks.

After this chance to stretch our legs, we continued east

to the Green River Gorge, its cool one lane bridge and the

‘ghost’ town of Franklin. With the rains now a bit heavier,

we wandered roads through lush farmland to and through

Enumclaw. Heading back west

to the Green River Valley some

road construction meant a bit of

freelancing to get us up onto

Lake Holm Road, then out to

the streets of Auburn.

From there we headed up the

Peasley Canyon Road and on

to Five Mile Lake Park. This sits on Military Road, part of the

first real road in King County, which was built between 1858

and 1860 to provide access for goods, services and soldiers

from Fort Steilacoom to the growing city of Seattle.

Gathered at the end, it was nice to visit with Alfisti Merril

Gordon, Kenny Heng, John Wiley, John Schommer and his

friend Ryan, and Eric Seeder in his Milano. Families came

along as well, with Karen & David James, their daughter Ella

and her friend Ben, while Dan O’Connell brought his new-

driver daughter Amy. Cameron

Birch plied the roads in his new

blue Stelvio with his wife, daughter

and son. I also appreciated the

driver of the Alfa 4C Spider for fill-

ing my mirror with yellow beauty.

The drive was smooth, all the

driving was plenty of fun and we all

appreciated the chance to get out

and enjoy a little safe car-socializing. Thank you, Paul!

O ur enforced lack of outside activities over the last year

has brought many projects into closer focus, but

sometimes circumstances make them more urgent all

on their own! Our club meeting on March 9 explored three

projects with very different levels of urgency and ambition.

First up was Kenny Heng, whose beautiful

1974 GTV has featured in a number of the

photos he submitted last year on our various

Search Party exercises. On one such he

parked the GTV before photographing it in

front of one of the Search Party targets.

When he got back in and started the engine,

it had an ominous tapping sound that wasn't

there before…

He took it to Authentic Motorcars where

Randy Johnson found that one ex-

haust valve had way too much clear-

ance. Removing the head showed

that a valve-adjustment shim had bro-

ken and dropped into the cylinder,

denting the top of the piston. Further

inspection revealed that the valve seat

had also come loose… Time for a

complete head overhaul.

Kenny decided to take advantage of the situation and

improve the engine’s responsiveness at the same time.

He’d thought for some time about bringing it up to Euro-

pean specs, as Alfa’s engines were somewhat detuned

for the USA market. So Randy has now pulled the

whole engine and is rebuilding it with higher-

compression pistons and European cams. The ignition

system will also be rebuilt, and the

SPICA injection adjusted to suit.

Kenny and Randy talked about the

options during a short video.

Clearly, this isn’t a radical up-

grade, but it will definitely add some

pep to the engine. Given that the

rest of the car is very original (apart

from upgraded shocks and springs),

this is very much in keeping with how Kenny uses it, and he’s

looking forward to getting it back on the road shortly.

Next, Kristian Jaeger gave us a PowerPoint presentation on

his project. He’d always had a passion for cars, wanted a fun

driver as a personal car but had never tackled a restoration

before. He found what he thought was a good candidate 1972

GTV but sadly it proved too rusty to be worthwhile and had to

be relegated to parts-car status.

Kristian had already booked Wes Ingram to rebuild his en-

gine to “hot street” specs, and Wes suggested that he take the

project to Jim Simpson’s Contemporary Classics of Washing-

ton on Whidbey Island. Fortunately, Jim found a rolling shell in

good condition, one that had been Gerry Woolery’s old 1975

race car. Being a California car rust was minimal, so that be-

came the basis for Kristian’s “runabout”.

Kristian dismantled the ‘75

shell as much as he could,

learning a great deal about

Alfas as he went, and found

that Gerry had been very thor-

ough in preparing the car for

racing, even taking off the

windshield wiper mounting

brackets! Fortunately Greg

Miller has a standard GTV also

on Whidbey Island, so Jim has

been using Greg’s car as a template to reconstruct

missing parts of the structure.

The car’s racing suspension may make it a bit

harsh for road use, but Dave Kingstone commented

that it’s easier to soften a car than to tighten it, so

it’ll probably work out OK. Steve Schaeffer also

advised Kristian to stay focused on finishing the car,

since once a pro-

ject is on the road

restorations tend

to stop!

The evening

ended with a brief

discussion from Ed

Aenile on a road-

ster project he’s

been working on for about 12 years. It

started with a GTV6 that was too rusty

to restore, so he had a new chassis

made to roughly GTV6 dimensions to

take the running gear, and is building

his own body on it in the style of a bar-

chetta convertible that Alfa could have

made in the mid-1950s. Most of the

mechanicals are done (including a 24-valve engine), the buck

for the body has been completed, and Ed and his team are

now shaping aluminum panels for the body itself. More details

can be found at “Project Barchetta” on FaceBook.

All in all it was a fascinating evening learning about some

very different ways we can enhance our cars to give us what

we’re looking for. Very many thanks to all for all your time and

effort to bring us up to speed, and good luck finishing all three

projects!

T he MG Car Club’s much-loved Tulip Rallye -

sadly, canceled again for 2021 - has always

involved much more than driving. The gath-

erings before and after, people handing out guides,

us handing them in again at the end and milling

around waiting for the results...

To avoid all those potential germ transfers, we

have an alternate plan; we'll simply run the event

safely, on the honor system. The route guide originally creat-

ed for the 2020 event will be posted on our webpage

(www.nwalfaclub.com) for you to print out yourself. Then on

April 24th or prior (or even the day after), enjoy a drive to

Skagit Valley and the Cascade Mall (now closed) to the tradi-

tional start point under the big Mall sign by

the freeway. Record your mileage and the

time, then head out following the guide and

answering the questions. Woohoo! The

event still lives!

Afterwards, send your 48 answers to me

via email. Scan form? Type out the an-

swers? Hand write them on a notepad and

show it through my window? Write each answer on a $10 bill

and mail them? You choose. Just get them to FKTMRus-

share the winner info and answers on Tuesday.

To keep everyone safe, even if you’re lucky enough to have received the vaccine already, please continue to utilize safe germ procedures; wear a mask over your nose and mouth, wash hands often, do not hug, keep a safe 6 ft distance from others, sneeze and cough into your sleeve, avoid crowded spaces, wipe down common spaces like desks, doorknobs,

counters, steering wheels, shift knobs, and don't chew a piece of gum you found stuck to a wall.

We’ve all made it this far, so let’s keep on track and finish the race. The NorthWest Alfa Romeo club will do its part with safe events and careful practices, such as our Search Parties, short drives, remote meetings, track days, and maybe a scav-enger hunt or two. Thanks for your support and participation and we all look forward to getting back to many of the fun events and socializing we are so good at. Stay safe. - Editor

Be Safe!

Wednesday, May 26 Twilight Lapping

O ur first Twilight Track day of the year

is scheduled for Wednesday, May 26.

It may be postponed, and if it is we’ll

let you know as soon as possible.

We’re running it under the same rules as last

year, i.e. restricted to experienced drivers who

do not require an in-car instructor. This late

afternoon event will be held at Pacific Raceways in Kent, in an

open lapping format designed to provide all registrants the

thrill of driving their beloved Alfa Romeos (or

other vehicles) in a "spirited" manner on a

closed road course.

Drivers must have verifiable credentials

from NWARC, Pro-formance Racing

School or any other reputable car club/

organization for "solo" driving in either Novice,

Intermediate, or Advanced run groups. They must also have

driven solo on track at Pacific Raceways at least twice in

E xcellent news is that Exotics at

Redmond Town Center is planning

to restart on April 24, and to hold

another of their outstanding Italian Car

Days on July 10! The variety - and quality -

of cars that shows up here is amazing, so

keep your fingers crossed and put it on

your calendar.

The display is free and open to the public from 9-11 am.

You’re welcome to put your own Alfa on show, but you’ll need

to get there early, and it needs to be rare, vintage or a current-

series QV or 4C. Otherwise (and certainly if you’re not driving

an Alfa) just park in any of the other lots around RTC and walk

over to the show. Keep in mind that if the chance of rain is

more than 30% the show won’t be held, so plan accordingly!

Alto Miglia 2020+1 AROC Convention

W ith the Alto Miglia 2020 convention de-

layed 14 months, it has now become Alto

Miglia 2020+1. It is still in Colorado

Springs, home to famed Pikes Peak which we’ll visit

along with many other cool places. The Convention

pre-tours are full, as is the High Tea event, but the

other events are waiting for you. If you delay, you’ll

miss out. Go to altomiglia.wordpress.com to register for the

event and the hotel. It’s one of the great ways to celebrate

being part of the Alfa family.

Road Trip To and From Colorado Springs

T here are far too many great roads and sights

between the NW and Colorado to fly there and

back; this event demands a great drive. If

you’ve joined us before, you know we have a great

time and every mile is pleasurable. We’ll cover ap-

proximately 400 miles per day with interesting and

scenic stops to stretch our legs and our minds. We’ll

still practice Covid safety with masks and safe distances

whenever possible.

The route to Colorado leaves the NW on Sept 4, Saturday

O ur friends to the south in AROO have a long tradition

of running excellent tours, and have three planned for

this summer. All NWARC members are welcome to

join in!

The three currently on the books are:

• June 25 - 27, Portland - Spokane

• August 13 - 15, Portland - John Day - Ashland

• Sept 8 - 18, a deluxe tour of the Canadian

Rockies centered around Fairmont Re-

sorts, rightly billed as the “trip of a lifetime.”

S ovren has announced plans for this year’s Pa-

cific Northwest Historics! Held as always at

Pacific Raceways in Kent and benefitting Chil-

dren’s Hospital, the usual full slate of races is planned.

Spectators will be allowed, albeit under some re-

strictions; ticket pre-purchase will be required, as will

masks, and seating in the grandstands may also be

assigned. Car corrals are planned, with some of the same

restrictions. Although the details are

clearly still being worked out, this is

one of the major vintage motorsports

gatherings in our area and attracts a

wide variety of fascinating vehicles,

both on the track and in the paddock

and parking areas. Be there if

you possibly can; you won’t regret it! - Jon Inge

morning, with departure points in the Seattle area and the

Portland area. (If you’re coming from other spots, I’m sure I

can give you a meetup point en route.) The route takes us

through the Palouse region of

SW Washington before crossing

Idaho at Lolo Pass. Montana is

big and we’ll use I-90 for a while

to make some distance, then

drop down to one of the most

stunning roads on the planet, the

Beartooth Highway at over

10,000 feet elevation. We wan-

der in Wyoming, then down into

northern Colorado before land-

ing at our destination, about

1,700 miles after leaving home,

in time for the Tuesday Wel-

come Party.

Returning home, we’ll leave

around Noon on Sunday, Sept 12, after the Awards Breakfast.

Hitting the road, we’ll drive Independence Pass and enjoy a

long afternoon. The next morning we head out across north-

ern Utah and then into Idaho. We’d love to swing by Bonne-

ville Salt Flats but the ‘track’ is busy that day and we don’t

have time to hang out and watch. Instead, we’ll cut up through

Idaho, then into Oregon and Washington returning on

Wednesday (Sept 15) evening after just under 1,500 miles

returning.

I am still finalizing the Hotels,

meal options, restrooms, gas

stops, and route guides. We’ll

send them out via email or

postcard to your mailbox, as

well as on Facebook. Once

you have these you can make

your hotel reservations using

the block of rooms I’ll have at

each selected hotel. I look

forward to seeing a large group

of Alfisti on a real Road Trip!

The convention itself is

planned for September 7-12

(Tue-Sun) at the host hotel, the

Doubletree in Colorado Springs.

T his “We Can’t Wait Any Longer”

tour is AROC’s fourth visit to Italy

under the expert guidance of Ste-

ve Austin Tours.

As before the tour includes visits to

manufacturers (Alfa Romeo, of course,

but also Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini

and Ducati), a Lambretta museum, out-

standing private car collections, lake

tours and the usual fabulous food and

wine of Italy.

As this year’s tour doesn’t include

watching the preparations for the Mille

Miglia (due to the date change), a spe-

cial bonus is a

two-day visit to Monaco! Drop into the

casino and see if you can win enough to

cover the cost of the trip...

A nd… we’re back out there! The first 2021 Search

Party ran for the whole month of March, and at-

tracted a higher than usual number of participants,

no doubt every one of them delighted to have an excuse to

get out and drive!

The target items were:

1. An Ice Cream store.

2. A building with a single letter on it.

3. A Railroad crossing sign/gate. (Two bonus points if the

gate is down, five if a train is going by.)

4. Alfa Romeo sign on or in a commercial building.

5. A traditional wrecking yard. (Ten bonus points if it has an

Alfa Romeo in it)

6. An Italianate style home.

7. Cartoon animal. (Painted on wall? Odd statue?)

8. Foot bridge.

9. Statue/Monument. (Five bonus points if you note

the historical significance.)

10. An Alfa Romeo twin to yours. (Two bonus points if

you photo the cars together.)

11. Boat launch with a boat.

12. Chocolate Shop.

Once again we had far more outstanding photos sub-

mitted than we can show here. They’re all on the

NWARC Facebook page in the participants’ individual

submissions, but here’s a selection. May they whet

your appetite, and encourage you to check out page 7 and

take a shot at Search Party #11!
