This Sunday, the Good Shepherd explains another Truth about the New Life we have as Gods sons and daughters through our Baptism and how we are to be effective witnesses to the Risen Lord: "I am the true vine. . . Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it re- mains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Just as we need to heed the voice of the Good Shepherd, so that we may follow him to the fullness of life, so too must we always remain intimately connected to the Lord Jesus like a branch to the vine. The LORDs Paschal Mystery frees us from the snares of sin and death, from all that brings sadness and holds us back. But this freedom is not like a bird that is freed from a snare and flies away. Our freedom opens the door to a per- sonal and intimate relationship with Almighty God. Our free- dom is that we might have life and have it in its fullness. If we have no relationship with the Lord—if we do not know Him, love Him, and follow Him—we have NO LIFE. There is NO true happiness and NO peace apart from the One who declares I AM the true vine. The Risen Lord has given us the Church itself, his Flock, as a means to be rooted and connected to the True Vine, as well as giving us the Sacraments, Sacred Scripture, the lives of the saints, and Church teaching. Preserving and deepen- ing this relationship with the True Vine, this rootedness and connected-ness, must be our top priority. And the more we are rooted in the LORD, the more we will seek ways to be effective witnesses to his death and resurrection, and thus bear much fruit for the LORD. In Holy Baptism, we are grafted onto the True Vine, Jesus Christ, and share His life. Christ emphasizes the need to nurture and nourish this New Life, saying: unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.(John 6:53) Today, we congratu- late the 7 of our children who are nourished for the first time by the Risen Lord in their First Holy Communion, the sacra- ment of Christs Sacred Body and Precious Blood. Fifth Sunday of Easter I Am the True Vine

Dear People and Friends of Saint Joseph’s,

Christ is Risen; Truly He is Risen! This Sunday, the Good Shepherd explains another Truth about the New Life we have as God’s sons and daughters through our Baptism and how we are to be effective witnesses to the Risen Lord:

"I am the true vine. . . Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it re-mains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches.

Just as we need to heed the voice of the Good Shepherd, so that we may follow him to the fullness of life, so too must we always remain intimately connected to the Lord Jesus like a branch to the vine.

The LORD’s Paschal Mystery frees us from the snares of sin and death, from all that brings sadness and holds us back. But this freedom is not like a bird that is freed from a snare and flies away. Our freedom opens the door to a per-sonal and intimate relationship with Almighty God. Our free-dom is that we might have life and have it in its fullness. Con-sequently, the Risen Lord directs us, “Remain in me, as I re-main in you.”

This fullness of life we call Eternal Life. The way we share in eternal life, through which we find happiness and peace here and now, as well as have the path to a fruitful life is ex-pressed in his statement, “I AM the true vine.” The image of the vine emphasizes this necessity of our rootedness in the Risen Lord, or in other words a personal relationship with Jesus, otherwise we have no life. If we have no relationship with the Lord—if we do not know Him, love Him, and follow Him—we have NO LIFE. There is NO true happiness and NO peace apart from the One who declares “I AM the true vine.”

The Risen Lord has given us the Church itself, his Flock, as a means to be rooted and connected to the True Vine, as well as giving us the Sacraments, Sacred Scripture, the lives of the saints, and Church teaching. Preserving and deepen-ing this relationship with the True Vine, this rootedness and connected-ness, must be our top priority. And the more we are rooted in the LORD, the more we will seek ways to be effective witnesses to his death and resurrection, and thus bear much fruit for the LORD.

In Holy Baptism, we are grafted onto the True Vine, Jesus Christ, and share His life. Christ emphasizes the need to nurture and nourish this New Life, saying: “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.” (John 6:53) Today, we congratu-late the 7 of our children who are nourished for the first time by the Risen Lord in their First Holy Communion, the sacra-ment of Christ’s Sacred Body and Precious Blood. We also congratulate the 16 young people who have been empow-ered by the fullness of the Holy Spirit in Confirmation this past Friday. TIME TALENT and TREASURE A Way of Life at Saint Joseph’s

Renewal at Saint Joseph’s through Intentional Discipleship

Intentional Discipleship requires a deliberate decision to pursue a deeper conversion (relationship) with Christ through worship, pray-er, service, giving, studying, and discerning. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that the process of conversion and repent-ance was described by Jesus in the parable of the prodigal son, the center of which is the merciful father. The parable reveals the new life — pure, worthy and joyful — of anyone who returns to God and to his family, the Church. Only the heart of Christ who knows the depths of the Father’s love could reveal to us the abyss of his mercy in so simple and beautiful way.

Please consider pursuing God’s love and mercy by participating in one or more of the following:

Daily Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation — Experience the gifts of conversion and the healing power of the Sacra-ments of Reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist. Please con-sider attending daily Mass and frequently participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Become a Perpetual Adorer — No other sacrament (except the Holy Eucharistic) has greater healing power; through it sins

are purged away, virtues are increased, and the soul is en-riched with an abundance of every spiritual gift.

St. Thomas Aquinas

Sign up for 1 hour a week as a perpetual adorer or a substitute in our Adoration Chapel. Open 24 hours a day, except when Mass is celebrated. To sign up please call the Rectory and ask for Mary Ellen Gardner.

Legion of Mary — The Legion is a lay apostolic association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the Church, serves the Church and their neighbors. Interested in joining or learning more about the Legion of Mary? Please contact Joanne Bauer at 717-393-7346.

Intercessory Prayer Ministry — Becoming a parish of intentional disciples includes an intercessory prayer team.

Are you being called to join others in opening yourself to the Holy Spirit so that He leads us in prayer?

Do you have a strong desire to pray for God’s will to be mani-fest within our parish?

Do you relate to the image of intercessory prayer as “tilling the soil of the heart of our parish” so as to prepare it to re-ceive the seed of the Gospel?

There are both individual and group prayer opportunities. For infor-mation please contact: Suzanne Ganse: 717-393-0067, [email protected] or come to the 1st floor meeting room in Reli-

gious Education Building at 6:30pm on First Fridays (next date is May 4th) for group prayer followed by Mass at 7:30pm in the chap-el.
