Reflections on the Sunday Scripture
April 29, 2018
The Fifth Sunday
of Easter
Readings:
Acts 9:26-31 1 John 3:18-24
John 15:1-8 Gospel
Jesus said to his disciples: “I am the true vine, and
my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every
branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one
that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. You
are already pruned because of the word that I spoke
to you. Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a
branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains
on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in
me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever
remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit,
because without me you can do nothing. Anyone
who does not remain in me will be thrown out like
a branch and wither; people will gather them and
throw them into a fire and they will be burned. If
you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask
for whatever you want and it will be done for you.
By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much
fruit and become my disciples.”
1. What is the difference between trimming and
pruning? God prunes so that the dead or living parts are cut away. If He only trimmed, He would only be reducing or shaping what is bad. Therefore, by pruning, God increases the production of fruit. 2. What are the signs that an individual is in need
of “pruning?” What in your life needs to be “gathered and thrown into a fire?” When we prune our roses or other plants - what happens? Do we see much fruit or flowers? Does the entire body become stronger?
3. How do you think God prunes us? Do you think He should only trim? What must we do to “bear fruit?” Should we get rid of the old so the new can blossom in the “Light of Christ.” 4. What are our feelings about being trimmed, bearing fruit, the consequence of not bearing fruit, and Jesus’ promise at the end of the gospel?
St. Joseph the Worker
Tuesday we celebrate the feast day of St. Joseph the Worker.
Glorious St. Joseph, patron of all who are
devoted to toil, obtain for me the grace in toil in the
spirit of penance, in order thereby to atone for my many
sins; to toil conscientiously putting devotion to duty
before my own inclinations; to labor with thankfulness
and joy, deeming it an honor to employ and
to develop by my labor the gifts I have received from
Almighty God; to work with order, peace, moderation,
and patience, without ever
shrinking from weakness and
difficulties; to work above all
with a pure intention and with
detachment from self, having
always before my eyes the
hour of death and the account-
ing which I must then render
of time ill spent, of talents
unemployed, of good undone,
and of my empty pride in
success, which is so fatal to
the work of God.
All for Jesus, all through Mary, all in imitation of Thee,
O Patriarch Joseph! This shall be my motto in life and
in death. Amen.

PRAY THE ROSARY TODAY
Please join the Knights of Columbus for
Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary, this
Sunday, April 29th, after the noon Mass.
This month, we will meet in the Church
rather than the Chapel.
One way that we can
honor Mary, is to
recite the Rosary.
“The Blessed Rosary of
Mary, is a sweet chain
linking us to God.”
Saint Pope John Paul II
The Knights gather to pray the Rosary
after the noon Mass whenever there
is a 5th Sunday in a month.
A Prayer for Our Country
O Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy, at this most critical time, we entrust the United States of America to your loving care.
Most Holy Mother, we beg you to reclaim this land for the glory of your Son. Overwhelmed with the burden of the sins of our nation,
we cry to you from the depths of our hearts and seek refuge in your motherly protection.
Look down with mercy upon us and touch the hearts of our people. Open our minds to the great worth of human life and to the
responsibilities that accompany human freedom.
Free us from the falsehoods that lead to the evil of abortion and threaten the sanctity of family life. Grant our country the wisdom
to proclaim that God’s law is the foundation on which this nation was founded, and that He alone is the True Source of our cherished rights
to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
O Merciful Mother, give us the courage to reject the culture of death and the strength to build a new Culture of Life. Amen.

Father Sebastian would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to the following individuals for all their hard work in providing St. Mark’s Parishioners with a wonderful picnic this
past Sunday. To Carol Simmons and the Hospitality Team; to John Farr and the Men’s Guild; to Maureen Monda and the Women’s Guild; to Francine DiScala

The Parishioners in turn thank Father Sebastian for hosting this “end of winter, beginning of spring” celebration. Even the weather dared not disobey.
