It all started withConrad Schinkinger 20years ago.

The Bull-A-Rama hadultimately been hisvision back in 1994, andfrom then till now, theevent has remained asteady part of springhere in Lamont and justas much a success as thevery first.

The event has alsobeen a major one for theAg Society, as well as itsmembers.

Volunteer membersMell and Sharon Snyderhave been with the AgSociety for many years, and with the Bull-A-Rama from the verystart.

Sharon, a membersince her high schoolyears, had a largeamount of exposure tothe society as she grewup, with her father beingthe former president.Mell was also a formerpresident of the society. Both spent their entirelives in Lamont.

“This was our homecommunity” states Mell.

The Bull-A-Rama is anevent that today, isknown far and wide, asthe couple explains thatthere are people whocome from all over tocompete, as well aswatch the event.

This year, there wereriders from as far awayas New Zealand andAustralia competing inthe event.

Bull-A-Rama Supremehas attracted cowboysthe world over, and hasalso been voted by theCanadian BullridingAssociation “The best inWestern Canada” fouryears in a row.

Some of the biggestchanges for the society ishow the volunteers pre-pare for the event nowcompared to when it firststarted.

“We had no extra pan-els,” explain the Snyders.“We had to take downmost of the outside arenaand bring it inside. Weeven rented buckingchutes. Over the years,we have acquired panelsand chutes just for Bull-A-Rama”

Mell and Sharon alsoadded that this year wasprobably one of the hard-est for setup, because ofall the snow that hadfrozen the bleachers into

the ground, causingthem to have to rent asteamer. “Mother Naturehas not cooperated”

There have also been afew minor changes overthe years such as the NoBull Trade Show whichwas also a part of lastyear’s event, and the bigscreen TV in the backwhere people can sit andwatch the televised ver-sion of the event byShaw instead of being inthe stands.

Another importantpart of the event is thevolunteers who helpmake everything hap-pen. “When this firststarted, we were the

young people,” jokesSharon, saying that theycan’t do as much of theheavy lifting needed forsetup, so it is up to theyounger members andvolunteers to ensureeverything is where itneeds to be for the bignight.

Over the years, theBull-A-Rama has beenable to put over $550,000back into the communityby showing their sup-port to communityorganizations as well asscholarships. “Wealways try to supportgroups” says Mell.

Some of the organiza-tions that are taking part

this year are: the LamontHigh School GradCommittee, the 4-HClub, and the ChipmanLions Club. The LamontFish and GameAssociation also soldpopcorn during theevent, with all of the pro-ceeds going towardstheir youth camps, andto the association in gen-eral.

Overall, the event’sgeneral success can beseen by many, as the AgSociety has been askedmultiple times to helpother places put on theirevents, and to tell themthe secrets of success.

The other day I received a distress call. Not a phone call, but an email call.My anxiety shot up considerbly when I read: "I am

writing this with tears in my eyes..."Quickly I glanced at the senders name again. Cliff

Moroziuk. Puzzling? Then came more strange words,"Sorry, I didn't inform you about my trips. A few daysback we made an unannounced vacation trip toManila, Philipines. Everything was going fine untillast night when we got mugged on our way back tothe hotel, all cash and credit card were stolen off usbut luckily for us we still have our passports withus."

How awful! A dream vacation gone south becauseof hoodlums.

Then the message went onto say: "We've been to theEmbassy and the Police here but they're not helpingissues at all and our flight leaves soon but we're hav-ing problems settling the hotel bills and the hotelmanager won't let us leave until we settle the bills.please i need you to loan me some money ($1,850USD). I will refund you as soon as I'm back home, Letme know if you can loan me some money? so I can letyou know how to get it to me. I look forward to hearfrom you Soon."

The message ended, "Thanks You, Cliff."How strange! You see, Cliff is someone I had pre-

viously contacted regarding information on SpasaMuskalik Church, and efforts to preserve the agingstructure.

I phoned Cliff after reading the email to ask if hehad been on a recent holiday? Even though he saidyes, it wasn't to the Philippines. And no, he didn't askme for money.

While we shared a laugh, it might not have turnedout to be so funny if I had been a friend of his ratheran acquaintance, and sent the money willingly tohelp him out. Besides some of the mistakes in thetext, the only other clue things were different fromprevious correspondence was the 0 in the replyaddress which did not correspond to his originalemail address.

How creepy! Just to think one can be so easilyduped by online criminals. It made me realize justhow important security measures and systems are,and would like to advise other cyber users to bewareand watch out for the ever increasing number ofscammers out there.

The art of storytelling came to life at the LamontPublic Library Saturday afternoon as the audiencewas pulled into the story as actors themselves.

Animated story teller gives a new twist to classic tales

Story teller Kerry McPhail acts out stories made upentirely from the audiences ideas and inspirations.

Jazmine InksterStudent Reporter

It was most definitelynot a “quiet” day at thelibrary.

Once Kerry McPhailwith T.I.E Dynamics tookthe stage, the room was

filled with a constantmixture of laughing, shouting, and all thenoises that come fromactive imaginationsworking together.

McPhail started hershow with a brand newtwist on the family clas-

sic “The Three Bears”.McPhails version wastold as a rap song withthe help of the youngaudience as props.

During her show,McPhail taught the chil-dren all of the elementsneeded in a proper story,

and proceeded to havethe children make up astory themselves forMcPhail to perform. Thestory and proved to begreat fun for bothMcPhail, as well as theparents, and the youngauthors.
