Gearing up for the 47th

Tournament of Champions coming

up the week of April 9 in Las Vegas,

the PBA issued some milestones in

the tournament’s history. This of

course evoked my own personal

memories of the great “senior

prom” of professional bowling, or

at least that’s what it was “back in

the day.”

The inaugural event was held in

1962 in Indianapolis and had a two-

game three-player final. Joe Joseph

of Lansing, Michigan won with a

480 and claimed a big $15,000. In

1965 the Firestone Corporation

adopted the event and for the next

28 years it became the Firestone

Tournament of Champions, referred

to as “The Firestone.” Billy

Hardwick won that year and his

$25,000 prize check was said to be

$5,000 more than what Jack

Nicklaus won for winning the

Masters that year.

In 1966 the event moved to

Riviera Lanes in Akron, a stone’s

throw from the magnificent

Firestone Country Club, where

players enjoyed pre-tournament

rounds of golf, an opening night

banquet (later, their Hall of Fame

inductions), and even the wives had

their own dinner. Firestone paid for

“major” media people’s hotel

rooms and meals, setting up a big

pressroom in the bowling center.

They ran a pool for the writers,

which consisted of naming the

order of finalists, and eventual

champion, and if there were a tie, a

combined final round score was

guessed. The winning writer

received a set of four brand new

Firestone tires.

For the twenty-fifth tournament

anniversary, all past winners were

invited to Akron. Firestone also

hosted a fun pro-am tournament

after every victory banquet. The

writers, Firestone executives, PBA

founder Eddie Elias and his wife

Peggy, sponsors, and 24 profession-

al bowlers took to the lanes for fun

and photos. Each amateur who

signed up received a bright red

Firestone shirt with his or her name

in huge white letters across the

back.

Even when Firestone had to

stretch the budget, some press peo-

ple were still brought in and had a

free hotel room. One year, in 1991,

there was a 40-minute delay of the

show with a bomb threat. ABC-TV

showed the finalists playing ball in

the parking lot of the lanes. Dave

Ozio won that year. Alas, Firestone

decided to drop the sponsorship and

Bridgestone Tire company picked it

up, but only for one year.

Brunswick stepped in and saved the

sponsorship from 1995 to 2000.

Eventually the tournament moved

to Mohegan Sun Arena in

Connecticut and stayed there

through 2007.

And now, as of 2008, the event

has been staged in the huge Red

Rock, Las Vegas complex.

Probably the biggest news that

came of that was in 2010 when

New Jersey’s Kelly Kulick became

the first woman to win a PBA tour

title, defeating Chris Barnes 265-

195. This writer was in Arlington

TX that week for the Grand

Opening of the Bowling Campus,

but suffice to say a group of us was

glued to the television in a hotel

room for that show.

Last year I was at Red Rock when

Mike Koivuniemi rolled a 299

game in the semi-final match, win-

ning over a regional bowler, Tom

Dougherty, who was encouraged in

the tenth frame to make his score an

even 100. Mike went on to defeat

Tom Smallwood 269-207 for a

$250,000 payday.

While it is still an exciting tourna-

ment, especially since the PBA

includes an evening for its Hall of

Fame inductions, it will probably

never compare to the early days of

“the Firestone.”

Johnny Petraglia, who had to get a

special furlough from the US Army

to compete in his first Firestone,

said that the entire city of Akron,

Ohio would turn out for a parade of

champions. Each bowler got the use

of a big car (often a convertible) for

the week. There were banners along

the main road. Welcoming signs

were everywhere. The press was

treated to dinner every night at lav-

ish local restaurants. Each year on

the day of the finals, the press and

finalists had the Champions’ break-

fast and press conference. Local

volunteers took vacation days from

their regular jobs to work at the tour-

nament. The winner received a

white jacket in addition to a major

title and big check.

And here I have joined the

“remember when” club, something

I thought was silly “back in the

day.”
