    SMILE, someones watching

  • Hello once again...is this time flying by or what? I always heard when I was younger, my elders would say, how fast

the years seem to go by. As a kid you may not realize how

fast it does go by. But stop for a second and think about your Elementary

School years. How long ago does that feel to you, even if your only in Middle School

now. And many of us have been out of school so long ago, that the drama in todays schools sounds unreal from how we grew up.

It is Obvious, we knew not to bring knives or guns or drugs to school. If we had a beef

with someone? You call them out! On the playground or off school grounds and fist

fought. Whoever won, made their point and dont do it again. I say that because, back when we All had respect to our elders (regardless of what we felt on the inside), we knew our place, as a kid growing up. Im guessing from about the 30yr range and up from what I see..its still all about how well (you as a parent) raise your children with good morals, self respect, shoot for the Top kind of attitude.

I feel that if you discipline your children as they are young, it all becomes easier to

raise because they know your rules, your acceptable behavior of them. Ive taken and succeeded at something I never thought I would have needed to do 12 yrs. ago. But that

was to stop everything crazy non-sense and be the Dad I needed to be to raise 2 won-derful daughters. As they now reach graduation soon. I think back to Elementary school,

fun moments. Great memories here in Freeport already. As a single father to these girls, I

say thank you to those teachers we have met that was sincere, kind and thoughtful of all

of our children. It was a great feeling of welcome to us. God Bless, Ms. Floyd too. Strange how quickly it changed tho, the way the teachers deal with students today in High School.go look it up, go figure it out, Google it? Im sure with all the horomones changing at that age, the kids could become very dramatic over foolishness. However,

you took that job. Do your job, just as all of us have to do. Like it or not to get paycheck

you must perform daily in the real world. Outside of school world. Youre the ones that can instill greatness and creative selfless invention minded kids. Some of you act

like your too busy to give an average student a chance to grow. Each child possess a

natural skill or talent. Find it! You should search that out in all of your students!

Some of the teachers have brought their pets into classroom everyday? I asked why,

they said to help the Teacher reduce stress for them. Really? What about those kids who

are allergic to animal dander? Yes, we pay big money to keep our kids healthy, right? If

the job you chose to do, is that stressful to you. Quit! Then stop doing it! (For your own

health). The kids do NOT need to hear about your struggles with your failing marriage or

anything personal as far as Im concerned. Its when teachers befriend a student with extra attention, isnt that how these illicit affairs happened? Yea, give me a break! As usual, I want you to change the mental channel with me and lets change the topic. How many of you (along with the entire Nation) was watching the Kentucky vs

Wisconsin Mens Basketball Final Four. As you may know, Kentuckys program in Basketball is one of the Nations Best and has been for many years. However they had an undefeated season and only 1 game away from winning it all being 40-0.

Well, that didnt happen. Wisconsin shut them down the last 6 minutes of the game and convincingly beat Kentucky. Still 38-1 season. Great. Ok, let me go on to my main

reason for stating such. After the game on National TV, an all black, sad defeated UK

team, was asked about what they thought of this big white kids (named Frank) on his performance against them? A black player stated this, F*** that nigga. So, because it was a black kid saying this there is no outrage of racism or racial state-

ment as such? Are whites rioting? Now, we all know Dam well that if the white boy

(Frank) would have said the exact same 3 words towards the black kid? There would be

riots still going on all across America! Am I right Al Sharpton?

You see, now-a-days its only us white folks who are considered racist, when any of us comment to the such towards any (other than white) race. You all do know what Im saying is the truth. Weve seen it happen too many times lately over black thugs, wanna be gangstas causing trouble acting all bad, rob, beat up people...then when the white cop shows up and he attacks the cop? What happens when you attack an officer?

YOU MAY GET SHOT! No matter your color. Then, for months after the incident they

loot, riot, burn and destroy businesses and the city. Even though now, that hip-hop thug is Dead. They are on TV listed and talked about him as if he was an innocent 10yr old or something, hands in the air? (Even that wasnt true). He was 19. An Adult. You are responsible for your actions no matter what color you are as an Adult of 18,

right? Please feel free to write in or comment on what Im writing here. Anytime, I like a good discussion. Ill print if you want. Freedom of expression, speech, etc. In closing. I would like to Thank You, for reading my little newspaper, going on 7 yrs.

now. If you are a visitor. When you go to our beaches here in Walton county or wher-

ever, PLEASE pick-up your trash when you leave the beach. We are very proud to care

for our area and as you can see how beautiful and unique some places are around here.

Can you imagine if we all just left our trash on the beach? We dont, so please do the same. Thanks for visiting, come back and see us again sometime. Have a great day!

FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH IN WALTON COUNTY

    CELEBRATES NATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK

WALTON COUNTY The Florida Department of Health in Walton County (DOH-Walton) will

recognize National Public Health Week April 6-

    11. National Public Health Week is an initiative

of the American Public Health Association

(APHA) to rally the public health community and

to bring awareness to public health concerns that

affect the Nation. This year the national theme for

the week is Healthiest Nation 2030.

Currently, the U.S. spends more and gets less when it comes to health care and public health

outcomes. This is the defining challenge of our

generation, states Holly Holt, Health Officer and Administrator of DOH-Walton. This is a task that we, the public health community, are

uniquely positioned to help overcome. Thats why, during National Public Health Week, DOH-

Walton will be rallying along with the public

health community across our Nation to make the

U.S. the healthiest nation in one generation by 2030. Every year in the United States, seven out of 10 deaths are due to preventable chronic

diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. In fact, chronic diseases account for 75 per-

cent of national health care spending, yet only 3 percent of our health care dollars go

toward prevention. In Walton County, there are more than 45 percent of adults that are

living with a costly and potentially life threatening chronic illness.

DOH-Walton is working to lessen the effect of chronic disease by educating the public

on prevention and increasing the ability to see a healthcare provider. Through the

growth of DOH-Walton primary care clinics in Paxton and Mossy Head during the last

year, the ability to see a healthcare provider regularly in Walton County is becoming

more of a reality for residents. DOH-Walton offers primary care services in DeFuniak

Springs, Santa Rosa Beach, Paxton, and Mossy Head that help residents and visitors get

care that can prevent serious health conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and heart dis-

ease. Clients with diagnosed chronic diseases can seek help to manage their conditions

with case management staff. In addition, the WeCare Program at DOH-Walton refers

uninsured clients to over 20 specialty physicians in the area.

Additionally, DOH-Walton partners with county businesses, agencies, and stakeholders

to work collectively in making Walton County a healthier place to live. The Walton

Community Health Improvement Partnership (WCHIP) brings these partners together to

work to improve healthy behaviors by promoting a physically active lifestyle and con-

sumption of healthy foods through multiple venues, i.e., promotion of walking history

tours and geocaching, cooking classes, and community or container gardens. Efforts to

increase use of screening services, preventive and primary care services included

agency collaboration to provide diabetic screening and awareness at local events. Also,

the WCHIP partners are implementing innovative ways to increase awareness of local

health and wellness resources through community resource leaders and social media.

    Upcoming DOH-Walton Events

WCHIP Annual Health Summit- April 22nd at DOH-Walton in DeFuniak Springs. Community partners will discuss current data and trends in Walton County. This

discussion will help direct initiatives for the upcoming year.

Lets Talk Medications Class- April 30th at DOH-Walton in DeFuniak Springs. Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) College of Pharmacy and

Pharmaceutical Sciences will lecture on non-narcotic pain management.

DFS Victims Fight Back The victims in a failed Robbery attempt were

honored Tues. with the Citizens Awards given by

Chief Mark Weeks. The two young ladies were

recognized for their bravery in thwarting an attempt

by a man trying to rob them of a $1000. One of the

victims displayed a can of pepper spray, as the

suspect tried to enter their vehicle. The suspect then

fled the area. The victims were able to provide a

good description and were very helpful in identify-

ing the suspect. 28 year old Bobby Lee Chaney was

arrested over the weekend after citizens, including

the victims, recognized Chaney. Chief Weeks was

very gracious to have the assistance of the victims

and other citizens in identifying the suspect. His

hope that others would want to come forward,

should they witness or become victim to a crime.

Night Owls Run Higher Risk of

    Health Problems

Even with the same amount of sleep as early risers, they were more

    prone to diabetes, muscle loss

Night owls are more likely than early risers to develop diabetes and

other health problems, even if they get the same amount of sleep.

That's the conclusion of a new study that included more than 1,600

people in South Korea, aged 47 to 59, who provided information about

their sleep habits and underwent tests to assess their health.

"Regardless of lifestyle, people who stayed up late faced a higher risk of

developing health problems like diabetes or reduced muscle mass than

those who were early risers," "This could be caused by night owls'

tendency to have poorer sleep quality and to engage in unhealthy

behaviors like smoking, late-night eating and a sedentary lifestyle," Of

the 1,600 people in the study, 95 were night owls, 480 were early risers

and the remainder fell somewhere in the middle.

Even though they tended to be younger, night owls had higher levels of

body fat and fats in the blood than early risers. Night owls were also

more likely to have sarcopenia, a condition where the body gradually

loses muscle mass, the findings showed.

Men who were night owls were more likely to have diabetes or

sarcopenia than those who were early risers, the investigators found.

Compared to women who were early risers, women who were night

owls tended to have more belly fat and a higher risk of metabolic

syndrome -- a collection of health conditions that increase the risk of

diabetes, heart disease and stroke.Considering that many younger people

are night owls, the risk associated with this type of sleep habit is "an

important health issue that needs to be addressed," The study found an

association between being a night owl and increased health risks; it did

    not prove cause-and-effect.

Drug Abuse Drug abuse isn't just about street drugs. Besides marijuana, legal medi-

cines are the most commonly abused drugs in the U.S. Over-the-counter

and prescription drugs can help and heal us. But some can be addictive

and dangerous if theyre used the wrong way.

    Keep your family safe.

Sedatives like phenobarbital, pentobarbital (Nembutal), and secobarbital

(Seconal). They help with anxiety, sleep problems, and some seizures.

But if you take more than prescribed, you can get addicted. High doses

can cause trouble breathing, especially if you use them when you drink

alcohol. If you cant function without barbiturates, get help. Going into

    withdrawal can be dangerous.

Valium (diazepam) and Xanax (alprazolam) are two examples of benzo-

diazepines -- another type of sedative that can help with anxiety, panic

attacks, and sleep problems. They work well and they're safer than barbi-

turates. But overused, they can also lead to physical dependence and

    addiction.

If you have trouble sleeping, drugs like zolpidem (Ambien) , eszopiclone

(Lunesta), and zaleplon (Sonata) can help you get the rest you need. But

if you use them longer than your doctor suggests, you may start to be-

lieve you need them to sleep. Although they're not as addictive as some

sleeping pills, doctors are concerned about abuse if they're not taken as

prescribed. Seek help if you are addicted to any drug, your living a

longer life will be the Thanks youll get. Call us if you need us! G. Roll

several projects as well as putting together a strategic

plan for the city for the next five to ten years. The

Water and Sewer Departments have now gone to a 10

hour four day work week now having Friday, Satur-

day and Sunday off with the exception of the on call

duty person. Additional annexation letters are being

received for those wanting to join into the city limits

and we are working hard getting the paperwork com-

pleted for this to happen. The City of Freeport fire

assessment fees will be discussed at the next meeting

with regards of turning it all over to the county rather

than the city assessing since we do not own the fire

department any longer. The annual Spring Arts and

Crafts Festival held this past weekend sponsored by

The Town Planters Society of Freeport was again suc-

cessful as well as the Freeport annual Car Show and

the city Easter Egg Hunt was a huge success this year

as the Destiny Church played a large part in the egg

drop (10,000)and bunny drop from a helicopter,

several hundred people were on hand and the children

had a wonderful time picking up the eggs and visiting

with the Easter Bunny, so many thanks to them for

their contribution to the community. Plans are still in

the making for the renovation/expansion of the com-

munity center and we are hoping to be able to begin

the process soon. Please dont forget the ground breaking on April 15th, at 11:00 am for the new Publix

Supermarket, we are all excited and look forward to

not only their presence here, but also the many

businesses that we should see come into Freeport.

Another reminder to go by and visit the Heritage

Museum, the museum is open Thursday-Saturday

from 12:00 (noon) until 5:00 pm, volunteers are still

needed to help with the operation of the museum. Join

us on Tuesday, April 14,2015 for the next city council

meeting beginning at 7:00 pm. Doors are always open

for your thoughts, please drop in or give me a call at

    835-2822.

Stop and smell the Roses they say, calming odor to the senses..buy flowers!

CHELCO to reduce rates by $1 million

CHELCOS Board of Trustees has approved a decrease in elec-tric rates that will save its members $1 million during the next

    12 months.

By being good stewards of members money and reducing costs, we are able to pass significant savings along to members,

and that is something we take great pride in here at CHELCO, said CEO Steve Rhodes. Our goal is to control costs while maintaining or improving safety, member service and reliabil-

    ity.

CHELCO will reduce the distribution cost adjustment (DCA)

on bills from $.004 (four-tenths of a cent) per kilowatt hour

(kWh) to $.00275 per kWh. The reduction of $.00125 per kWh

will save the average CHELCO residential member, who uses

1,200 kWh per month, about $1.50. The new rate will take ef-

fect on bills mailed in May for April usage.

The DCA tracks changes in the cost to distribute electricity to

CHELCO members. It can change if costs increase or decrease.

CHELCO calculates the DCA once each year. The other com-

ponent of expenses, the cost to purchase electricity, is tracked

up or down by the wholesale power cost adjustment (WPCA).

In the last two months of 2014, CHELCO reduced members bills about $600,000 by adjusting the DCA to reflect lower than

    budgeted costs achieved in 2014.

The lower DCA for the next 12 months reflects CHELCOs efforts to contain costs, said Rhodes. This adjustment is for 12 months because we are recognizing that these measures are

ongoing. CHELCO has taken small steps in many different

areas to achieve these results. It is a credit to the board of trus-

tees and all employees who prioritize the best interest of our

members as they work day-to-day and plan for the future.

CHELCO is a not-for-profit electric distribution cooperative

serving more than 46,000 accounts in Walton, Okaloosa,

    Holmes and Santa Rosa counties.

Forgive the people trying to put this down, talk

There are two sides to the week ahead - very fast and very slow. When it comes to closing deals, getting a

bargain, or sending your message out to the world, be quick off the mark. The faster you respond to the

opportunities around you, the better off you will be. The Universe loves speed, so pick a goal and plan,

talk, and advertise your way to success. After this you'll be ready to kick back and relax to soothe nerves.

Are you on the same merry-go-round and feeling overwhelmed, with financial issues causing feelings of

frustration? If so, the way to deal with this isn't to flail around in the water trying not to drown but to gather

information and make intelligent decisions. You don't have to sort this out alone - get help. If you feel

panic rising, this is the time to find someone who can inform you of solutions you never knew existed.

Mind power rules this week, as does developing an insatiable curiosity. You'll go far if you read everything

you can find and become inspired. Read motivational books if it will help you take action and do what you

have to do. The information you pick up could be crucial in helping you get a better job, persuading your

love interest out on a date, or explaining why you deserve a pay raise. Creativity and romance rock, too.

Mental activity could keep you awake at night. Your subconscious mind seems to be very active at this

time, too, so by tapping it you may be able to put its helpful attributes to good use. Consider journaling

every day and your creative ideas could leap off the page, helping you resolve problems and gain a new

perspective on life. Watch your dreams, too, as they can prove helpful.

It's well worth socializing this week as it could significantly change your life. Whatever issues or chal-

lenges you face, someone you meet is bound to have an answer - or at least some advice. Even so, it doesn't

mean you have to discuss your innermost secrets. Carefully choose the people in whom you confide. Venus

dances into your sign this weekend, making you an attractive option.

This week is all about action related to your goals and ambitions. The cosmos may have some amazing

surprises for you in the form of encouraging events or people you meet. If you have been procrastinating

concerning an important career plan, this is the time to get busy. However, you will also benefit from

befriending likeminded people who might be able to offer you support.

A new influence kicks in, motivating you to start on all those plans and ideas you've been thinking about.

Traveling, whether for pleasure or business, is strongly indicated, too. You'll benefit more by taking the

road less traveled. If you're going on vacation, opt for places off the beaten track. They can open you to

new life experiences. If you're thinking of taking a course, look for one with different take on a subject.

Allow your intuitive awareness to guide you through the maze of money matters this week. If you've

despaired of ever getting your finances sorted out, the current alignment encourages you to renew your

efforts. In this instance knowledge is power. The more you know, the more access you'll have to facts that

can banish fears associated with not having enough money. However, you also need to do something.

What do you do if other people seem to question your motives? Perhaps you feel that a love interest, part-

ner, or other people around you are being too inquisitive, and you don't like it! This week you'll need to

flex your muscles and give as good as you get. If somebody seems to be trampling on your boundaries.

Your love life is getting much more interesting. If you're in a long-term partnership, taking on a challenge

together could be good for you both, especially if you increase your joint income as a result. Looking for

love? Opt for a more proactive approach to finding the person of your dreams. This doesn't just apply to

socializing. You'll also benefit from adopting a positive lifestyle with plenty of exercise.

You'll enjoy pitting your wits against others in a competitive sense, whether this involves sporting or

entrepreneurial activities or both. This week's powerful Mercury focus encourages you to think in terms of

strategies to get what you want. Whatever you do, don't leave things to chance. With just a little thought

you can do so much better. Want to capture someone's heart? Show you're the best person for him or her,

even if you have to act a little goofy to fulfill your dream.

A calm, peaceful life may seem like an unattainable dream. This week looks just as hectic as ever, particu-

larly on the home front. It's at such times when in the thick of it that you can make great progress. If you

feel challenged, see it as a plus. It brings an opportunity to progress, even if unwillingly at first. You'll

need to soothe your nerves after so much excitement, and with romance high on the agenda there are

    plenty of chances for that.

  • FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF

    HEALTH IN

    WALTON COUNTY

    ADDRESSES COUNTY HEALTH RANKINGS

WALTON COUNTY The Florida Department of Health in Walton County (DOH-Walton) recognizes the value in measur-

ing health outcomes and today acknowledged the sixth annual

County Health Rankings & Roadmaps tool released by the Uni-

versity of Wisconsin and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

This study highlights the many community factors that influence

health and uses established data, much of which is available

    from the department at www.floridacharts.com.

These rankings are a snapshot of the health of counties across the country and they empha-

size that health is not a singular effort but a combined work in progress across all commu-

nity partners. The department works in collaboration with local governments, non-profit

organizations, health care facilities, business groups, schools, faith-based organizations and

many other stakeholders to improve the health of all people in Walton County. These rank-

ings use data related to physical environments, social and economic factors, health behaviors

    and clinical care.

Working together to make Walton County a healthier place to live is critical. We all have a stake in creating a healthier Walton; no single person or agency can overcome the health

challenges we face, said Holly Holt, DOH-Walton Administrator and Health Officer. Working together, we can make Walton County a healthier place to live, learn, work and

    play.

In Walton County, the Community Health Improvement Plan is designed to address specific

opportunities for improved health that have been identified by the community. The depart-

ment has partnered with many stakeholders to implement the improvement plan and collabo-

rates regularly to track progress. Over the last year, the Walton Community Health Improve-

ment Partnership (WCHIP) members collaborated to improve healthy behaviors by promot-

ing a physically active lifestyle and consumption of healthy foods through multiple venues,

i.e., promotion of walking history tours and geocaching, cooking classes, and community or

container gardens. Efforts to increase use of screening services, preventive and primary care

services included agency collaboration to provide diabetic screening and awareness at local

events. And, finally, the WCHIP partners are implementing innovative ways to increase

awareness of local health and wellness resources through community resource leaders and

    social media.

The Walton County Prevention Coalition understands the value of being a part of the WCHIP as we coordinate drug prevention initiatives that promote drug-free communities

and wellness. Delivering a unified message reinforces the positive aspects of each campaign

while educating the community about how drug abuse prevention fits into overall public

health. Everyone who is interested in promoting wellness should be part of the WCHIP,

states Bryan Callahan, Coalition Coordinator, Walton County Prevention Coalition.

We have chosen Sweets for our Pet of the

Week. If you could put her photo & story

in print, we would greatly appreciate it!

A very pregnant Sweets was rescued from the county shelter and delivered

five precious babies upon her arrival to

Alaqua. Now that all of her babies have

been adopted, this beautiful two year old

Lab/Hound mix is ready to find a forever

home of her very own. If her mothering

skills are any indication, then she'll be a

loyal, loving and gentle dog. If you think

that Sweets is truly the perfect match for

you, then you must come meet her at

    Alaqua Animal Refuge!

    Another Letter To the Editor:

First let us say thank you for all that you have done to

bring the local news to the people of Freeport and the

outlining areas. That being said, I have a topic of in-

terest I'd like to share w/you and that is the problem of

Spring Breakers. Seems as though these students are

allowed to do basically whatever they please - whether

it be driving like a speed demon on Rt. 331 or trashing

    our beautiful public beaches.

According to the info when doing research on our

Posse unit - it consists of two branches: the Citizen

Volunteer Program and the Citizen Posse Unit. Why

don't we have the Volunteer program of the Posse

Unit patrolling the beaches and the Citizen's Unit,

being able to write citations for littering/underage

drinking? Unfortunately, I haven't done that much

research on this issue; but there definitely needs to be

something done with these problems. I'm all for visi-

tors; but I'm in favor of sensible driving and proper

    care of someone else's property.

Thank you for your time, I hope this gets the right at-

tention. Been 5 wrecks just on the bend before the

bridge, all head-on. People need to quick speeding and

    watch the road! GINNY FREEPORT

    Reading Glasses By Rian Lyday

12% of people with glasses wear them as an attempt to see better. 88% of people with glasses wear them as an attempt to appear smarter.

Mokokoma Mokhonoana I had Lasik surgery when I was

young and vain. My dad told me to

wait, that the surgery would improve and my eyes

were still changingI didnt listen. My doctor told me because I was so young at the time of my sur-

gery that I would need reading glasses when I turned 40. I turned 39 this year and I swear

that one day I woke up and couldnt read the label on the soup can. I have never been afraid of growing older, in fact, I look forward to holding grandchildren and watching my hus-

bands hair turn silver. But this sudden loss of freedom, taking away my ability to read something without assistance, really depressed me. I try to joke about it, reaching for my

reading glasses with a smart comment, but insideI am crying. The ironic thing is that I am a teacher and do you know they make teachers manuals in tiny script while my stu-dents have big, bold letters? I dont know why but I believe the text book manufacturers are sitting in a room somewhere laughing at the thought of all of us reading glasses aged teachers trying in vain to teach from a font size 8 book. I am trying to embrace the inner,

blinder, side of me but it isnt easy. Bring on the gray hair. Bring on the creaking joints. Bring on the trips to the doctors. But please, give me back my eyesight. My little world

seems a lot stranger when I have to put on glasses to check my text messages and Facebook

    status.

10 signs you made need glasses:

Blurred close-up vision or presbyopia (the need for reading glasses as we age)

    Poor distance vision, or nearsightedness

Difficulty seeing objects both close up and at a distance (astigmatism)

    Difficulty seeing at night

Increased difficulty adjusting from dark to light surroundings

Difficulty in reading or working at a computer

Eyestrain or eye fatigue ...Frequent headaches..Double vision...Seeing halos around

Looking for more work There have been several handymen workers

and a few skilled carpenters in our area,

that contact my office. So, if YOU need

some stuff built around the home.. Or even remodeling on the inside. Just

    contact 850-585-0262 for details.

    Thank You for your consideration.

Cont from previous pg. I would like to personally thank members of the Walton County Health Improvement Partnership for working to make a difference in the health of Walton County citizens. Their

dedication and service have impacted me personally and professionally. Through my inter-

action with WCHIP partners I was able to reinforce the need for one of my own family

members to seek the help they needed for success, said Latilda Hughes-Neel, Planner,

    City of Freeport.

The time spent with the people involved with the Walton Community Health Improve-ment Partnership is valuable to me as I serve our families in need. WCHIP helps me to

help families in Walton County, especially the children, said Tamara Hightower, Case

    Manager, Childrens Volunteer Health Network.
