Adult Education at the Center A Message from the Rabbi-
Rabbi Rafi Cohen Continuing Our March for the Living As we approach Yom Ha'Shoah (Holocaust Memorial Day) which occurs this month on Sunday, April 11, I recall one of the most significant trips I have ever experienced. When I was a high school sophomore, I participated in the March of the Living, an interna-tional, educational program that brings Jewish teens from all over the world to Poland for Yom Ha’Shoah. Central to the trip is a march from Auschwitz to Birke-nau, the largest concentration camp complex built dur-ing World War II, and it is followed by a flight to Israel
to observe Yom Ha’zikaron, Israel Memorial Day, and Yom Ha'Atzmaut, Israel Independence Day.
One of the expressed goals of the March of the Living is for young people to learn the lessons of the Holocaust and to lead the Jewish peo-ple into the future vowing “never again.” It is crucial however, to consider the meaning of these words and that Jewish people need not be the only ones to take this vow. While the words “never again” are part of our ver-nacular and an overarching concept in any Jewish history curriculum, there are many non-Jewish groups who find ways to observe this impor-tant date whether by gathering for a brief ceremony, lighting a yellow me-morial candle in memory of the six million, or reading some of the names of those who perished during the Shoah.
A recent article in The Jewish Week (New York City’s equivalent to the Jacksonville Jewish News) describes a group of eight teens, mostly black and Latino, who are currently seeking funds to complete a trip of their own to Eastern Europe and to go “back in history” to experi-ence their own march of the living. For these members of the Global His-tory class at the High School for Law, Advocacy and Community Justice, a public school near the Upper West Side of Manhattan, the trip to Auschwitz is a potentially life-changing experience that I was very fortu-nate to undergo. To this day, when I hear the sound of the shofar my mind returns to the blast of the ram’s horn that I, and 6,000 others, heard as we marched from Auschwitz to Birkenau wearing identical blue March of the Living raincoats. It snowed the day that I marched, but I remember the sun piercing through the sky as we emerged from the darkness of one of the crematoria.
While my mental snapshots may be different than yours, it is es-sential that we all find ways to observe Yom Ha’Shoah. Some of our sto-ries about the Holocaust do not resonate as strongly as others and enter-ing a concentration camp barracks filled with children’s shoes and other accessories confiscated during the war certainly makes an impact unlike any other. To quote one reader of an article published by the teens as they attempt to raise funds for their trip, the sights that these inner-city kids may witness upon their visit to Auschwitz will aid them in “becoming voices that we all need in order to keep the facts of the Holocaust alive in the future”.
The history we recall belongs to all of us, and we may know someone who marched from Aushwitz to Birkenau, experienced one of the other camps, or perhaps you completed the walk yourself. It is vital for each of us to find meaningful ways to remember what happened and complete our own symbolic march for the living.

EASY TIPS TO GO GREEN AT HOME 1. Reusable Bags When you go out shopping, bring your own reusable bags. This preserves resources by cutting down on the huge number of paper and plastic bags that are discarded after a single trip. Stores may even give you a bag credit. 2. Tap Water Drink water from the tap, instead of buying single-use bottled water, which requires much more energy to produce, store and transport. Barely 20% of those plastic bottles end up getting recycled, and most are made out of petroleum. Use filters if you are con-cerned about your local water supply. 3. Electricity. There are many ways to trim those electric bills. Wash your laundry in cold water instead of hot, line dry your linens, and use a toaster oven for small heating needs instead of a bigger electric stove. Open windows to let the light in, turn off unneeded lights and appliances, and unplug unused electron-ics to counter the 'energy vampire' effect.

Q and U get Married at the Jacksonville Jewish Center Preschool
Weddings are always such happy occasions, especially when they are between two letters that belong to-
gether! Harry Shmunes, or Mr. Harry, performed the marriage between Letter Q (represented by Ashley
Zunic) to Letter U (represented by Mason Teitelbaum) with all the rules and guidelines of the other 24
letters of the alphabet. The preschoolers watched in amazement as the ceremony took place. There was
a chuppah, witnesses, flowers, bridesmaids, a Ketubah, and of course, the
breaking of the glass (their crayons)! Parents and students sang in celebra-
tion and watched as Letter Q circled around Letter U seven times. Their
union was sealed as they wrote their letters side by side and broke their
crayons . Once again, the fantastic teachers at the JJC Preschool combined creativity and excitement
with a true learning experience! Come check out the JJC Preschool. Contact Stephanie Teitelbaum at
268-4200 x136 for information and/or to take a tour.

students. Our study of
Passover culminated in two
model seders. There was a
Kindergarten – 2nd Grade
model seder for our youngest students and their families, with
lots of suggestions for keeping our children involved and busy at
our home seders. We had a unique “progressive model seder” in
3rd – 6th Grades, with help from our 7th and 8th Graders. Activi-
ties and songs reinforced the students’ knowledge of our Pass-
over traditions.
