Binnaway Bush Telegraph Page 1 April 2011 Bush Telegraph A Community Newspaper for Binnaway Issue No. 34 April 2011 Deadline for next issue: 12 noon , Saturday 30 th April The 2011 Binnaway Show was very successful with increased numbers of entrants in the cattle, sheep and horse sections. The Show had a very successful yard dog trial section, which took all day to complete. Another section to create a lot of interest was the newly introduced 5 -20 hp Open Traction Pull Working Technical Design Class. Although there were not a lot of entries in this section this year the boys who did enter enjoyed the experience and appreciated the feed back from the judge, Mitchell Rawlinson, who was very impressed by the standard of the entries. This section was organised by Sam Bowen, helped by John Nalder. It is great to see the younger members of the community wanting to become involved with the show. Hopefully this is the start of increased interest by more young people! Although entries were down in some sections of the pavilion there still was an impressive display for visitors to the show. Thanks must go to Binnaway Central School staff and students who supported the show with entries in the Farm and Garden Produce, Horticulture, Cooking and Arts and Crafts sections. The Open Art section created an impressive display as people entered the pavilion with a range of very professional art work on display. We have some very talented artists in our district! Again our creative sewers and “crafty” people did not let us down with some very fine displays of needle craft in those sections for us to admire. Numbers of entries were up in the Jams and Sauces section which was great to see but unfortunately they were down in the Photography section, though the display was worth looking at. Hopefully next year this section will have lots more entries. This is a good opportunity to acknowledge the work done by the stewards. Without all their work before show day chasing up entries and then on show day we would not be able to run the show!. There are some ladies in the pavilion who have been stewards for many years - one lady at least has notched up close to sixty years acting as steward in her section. Thanks also to the local school and preschool for the displays of student work which were also included in the pavilion. These displays generated a lot of positive comments and are a great showcase of the work being completed by our young people at school- either preschool or “big” school. The sheep section was boosted by entries from Baradine Central School, Coolah Central School and St Lawrence's, Coonabarabran and the show society would like to thank them all for supporting our show. The arena was busy all day with 4 rings running at once , followed by ring 5, the sporting events, which was held once ring 4 was finished. A unexpected feature in the ring was a display put on by Shirley Sim, a granddaughter of Stan and Nancy Guy who was home visiting family for the weekend. Shirley put on two displays of her horsemanship with her very well trained Friesian horse - one display was an apache display where she and the horse were “dressed” in Apache clothing and performed a routine to Indian music. Later in the day they again donned costume, this time for a much more formal display. This is the first time we have had a display like this at the show and it was thoroughly enjoyed by the people watching. Displays by different groups, including the Rural Fire Service and the Coonabarabran Vintage Car Club created points of interest as people wandered around the grounds. Thank you all of these people for supporting the show. The Lions members were kept busy all day at their BBQ feeding the masses as were the ladies in the dining room who provided morning teas and then salad lunches for people who wanted something a bit different to the BBQ. The Show Society took the opportunity to farewell John and Brigita Nalder and to thank them for their many years of tireless work for the local show. John was president of the show for three years and Brigita was secretary for five years. Both these jobs involve a lot of time and commitment. President, Mitchell Rawlinson, presented them with a gift from the committee and wished them all the best in their new home. One disappointing area on the day was the lack of support for the novelty events. Sponsorship had been obtained for tug-of - wars, dog jumping and dog racing but unfortunately these events did not go ahead due to lack of interest. This is a shame as it would have been a fun way to finish off the 2011 show. If anyone has any ideas of events such as these which they feel would be worth holding at the 2012 show please contact the show committee. We also would need people prepared to run them on the day as all the committee members are already flat out and can not do more on the day! Remember it is your town and your show! The 2012 Show will be held on Saturday 3rd March so you have nearly twelve months to prepare for the show. Binnaway Show 2011 p

Old Photos WantedTo coincide with the 150 year celebrations I would like to try and get a collection of photographs together which depict Binnaway’s past. I am looking for photos which show buildings which now no longer exist, sporting teams (hopefully with names), events of significance eg opening of the new school, climatic events eg floods particularly if they are of the town itself and droughts, occupations and the work they performed. If you have any of these type of photo or something that you think might be suitable I would be most grateful if I could arrange to get a scanned copy of the photo. All original photos will be returned to their owner. Over time these photos might be used in a book, displayed for the 150 year celebrations and hopefully used in the end as part of a muesem. If you are able to help with this request can you arrange to see Doc Halliday at Binnaway Rural Supplies?

LEST WE FORGETThe Anzac tradition was forged on 25 April 1915 when the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula. It marked the start of a campaign which lasted eight months and resulted in some 25,000 Australian casualties, including 8,700 who were killed or died of wounds or disease. The bravery and spirit of those who served on the Gallipoli Peninsula shaped a legend, and so the ‘ANZAC’ became a part of the Australian and New Zealand language. In 1916, the first anniversary of the landing was observed in Australia, New Zealand and by troops in Egypt. That year, 25 April was named ‘ANZAC DAY’.By the 1920’s, Anzac Day ceremonies were held throughout Australia and the states had designated Anzac Day as a public holiday. Commemoration of Anzac Day continued throughout the 1930s and 1940s with World War II veterans joining parades around the country.Since the end of the Second World War, veterans from other conflicts, ex-service men and women, current serving personnel and cadets join in parades to show respect to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. In recent years there has been a resurgence of participation at Anzac Day ceremonies, veterans of the past proudly display their medals, soldiers of today boldly wear their uniforms. Families of veterans who have passed on honour their memory by wearing medals awarded when the battle was over. Source: (www.dva.gov.au)In 2011, our Binnaway community will honour our veterans with a march at 10.30am, forming outside the Binnaway Memorial Soldiers Hall, and marching along with school students and descendants of veterans will march along the main street to Len Guy Park. In the event of heavy rain, both the march and service will take place in the Hall at 11am. At 11am, the Anzac Commemorative Service will commence, with students from the Binnaway Central School leading the service. A guest speaker will provide the commemorative address . After the commemorative service, the returned service personnel will be invited to the Shiralee Royal Hotel to partake in the traditional Anzac Day meal.

Returned servicemen and women’s meals will be funded by the Binnaway Progress -Anzac Day Fund

If returned servicemen and women’s families plan to share this meal, please book with the Royal Hotel by APRIL 20 AT THE LATEST!! DO NOT FORGET OTHERWISE you may turn up and find that there is no provision for you!!!!

Servicemen and women are automatically booked in!!!!!! Families and Friends are not automatically booked !!!!!!

Senior Citizens LunchThursday 24th March 2011A day of fun and frolic was had at the Binnaway Health Centre on Thursday 24th all in the name of Seniors Day! Forty seniors gathered for lunch followed by entertainment and it was a great hand clapping day. Violinist Pixie Jenkins entertained us with Rollicking Violin music which got many toes tapping. His good humour together with his fiddling brought lots of fun to the party. Luncheon was provided by the CWA girls and our thanks go to them for the good food. The celebration was funded by a government grant and brought much joy to our community. Many thanks go to all for making such a happy occasion.

We have endeavoured in this column to introduce our readers – particularly those that come to town in recent times – to some of the men and women who have, over the years, contributed to the welfare and the social well-being of our town. They have won their [laces on Binnaway’s “Honour Roll” in different ways. Some for their loyalty and passions, some for their courage and their tenacity, some for their enterprise and ingenuity, and some for their sporting skills.John Brophy Renshaw was the son of Ignatius and Ann Renshaw, who came to Binaway in the early part of the 20th century. Jack’s father died when he and his siblings were very young, and his mother Ann Renshaw (later Collins) assumed the role of Matriarch. A women of great drive and determination, she strived, in the face of extremely difficult conditions, to give her family of eight, the very best education, to fit them for their career paths.Jack attended Binnaway Public School, then went to Patrician Brothers Orange and finially to Holy Cross College in RydeFrom working in the family’s dairy, which operated out of the “Hampton Park” property, Jack went on to run the Binnaway Butchery, until the business was taken over by Walter Frater.By then Jack’s exceptional talents became increasingly apparent. His election to the Coonabarabran Shire Council was the first step on the road to a reamarkable political career. He served 8 years as an alderman and was Shire President for two years. In Spite of his Conservative country back-ground Jack renshaw had decided that labour held the key to his political aspirations, and joined the party in 1930.What happened in the following few yearsis the story of one of the nost meteoric careers inNSW Parliamentry history. In 1941, he wrested what was regarded as a safe Country Party seat – the seat of Castlereagh, from the sitting member Alfred Yeo. By 1053 his status within the party had grown to the stage where he was admitted to the cabinet and given the portfolio of public works.Jack renshaw became the “go-fix-it” man for the Heffron Government, and at one time or another, he held the portfolios of lands, Agriculture and the newly created Industrial development and De-centralisation.

It might be inappropriate to mention Jack Renshaw’s name in the same breathe as the great Martin Luther King, but Jack too, had a vision and a dream. His vision was the ridding of the “back-blocks” mentality, held by many people at the time, in their attitude to country towns. His dream was the raising of living standards in country towns, thru better health services, better transport and communication facilities and the creation of employment by moving light industries from cities to country areas. The Ministry of Industrial development and De-centralisation was jack Renshaw’s “brain-child” and an important step in his political agenda

In 1959 he was made Deputy Premier and handed the Treasury portfolioTwo years later he became NSW’s 31st Premier, but it was a desperate move by the Labour Party to try and win back support and arrest the serious drift in the party’s popularity. After 25 years in office the party seemed to have lost it’s way. It suffered a humiliating defeat at the polls and was thrown out of office. However, the Castlereagh Electorate stuck to the Binnaway man thru thick and thin and he held the seat for 39 years, and remained a powerful force in Labour Party ruling cicles for the full extent of his Parliamentry life. When Neville Wran won government, he picked the country boy for his Treasurer, a ppost he held from 1976 to 1980.I a Profession subject to the most intense public scrutiny Jack renshaw maintained a “squeaky clean” image. He certainly hit the headlines on many occasions, but always for

the best reasons. The former Binnaway Butcher was named Companion Of The Order Of Australia in 1979, and tributes to him are visable across the State – on public buildings and public thoroughfares. A section of the Pacific Highway is named The John Renshaw Drive. In spite of his onerous parliamentary work – load, JR never lost contact with his electorate or with his home town. He would go to great lengths to come back for town functions and seize the opportunity to refresh old friendships with a rouond or two at the local water-holes.His friends all called him by his nick-name Spot. A name he got possibly because of an eye injury sustained in a accident. He was quite comfortable with that and for a man who never insisted on protocol, it would be fitting for us, in paying him a compliment, to simply say : “Goodonyer Sport – Goodonyer Mate”.

A bit of a slow start to the year as our meeting was cancelled in January. We held our first meeting on Wednesday night in the health centre with 8 members in attendance. Everyone was full of chatter about their Christmas activities with families. Robyn has been getting our book club organised and we are in the process of getting a few books together. Our main business was the Seniors Citizens lunch. which is to be held on Thursday the 24th March in the Health centre. This years entertainment is to bePixie Jenkins. Pixie is a very well known Country violinist. He doesn’t just play the violin, he makes it talk. I have been a great fan of his and have seen him many times in Tamworth at the country music weeks. Please come and make the day a success for us all.D. Leader

New Enviro Tag by LeaderLeader products have recently launched a new NLIS tag which they hope over time will be the way of the future in NLIS tags. The new round tag is Australian made and fully recyclable which means that as cattle are sent for slaughter the chip will be sent back to Leader for them to remove and reprogram. The savings made by returning tags and chips will be returned to the producer in the form of cheaper NLIS tags. This is the company’s plan and cheaper prices will only happen after a critical number of tags begin being returned from the abattoir system. To encourage producers to purchase the new Enviro tag Leader are offering the following.

Buy 300 Enviro tags and receive a FREE Jumbo Ring Expander and 25 jumbo marking rings

Buy 1000 Enviro tags and receive a FREE Blue Heeler Stock Prodder

If you want any more information on these tags or other Leader products call in and talk to us.

Good numbers and quality in Stud Cattle SectionThe Brangus, Hereford, Limousin and Braford cattle breeds were represented this year at the Binnaway show. Coonabarabran High

School put in a top effort showing the Elton Brangus cattle. Local Binnaway Central School lad Cody Pitman is a very keen parader and did an excellent job helping the Southern Cross stud with their cattle. Cattle results are indicated in the photos, with the exception of

Columbian Sol E 34 who somehow missed out on her photo, but was British Breeds Grand Champion Female on the day. The Columbian Shield for the most successful exhibiting stud was won by the Columbian stud itself – well done Gary!

A huge thank you to the cattle section sponsors – Christie & Hood, Larry Tolmie, Milling Stuart PTY LTD, Davison Cameron & Co, Korff & Co, Coolah Veterinary Clinic, Genesis & Ancare, Leader Products, Southern Cross Braford Stud and Suncorp Bank. Thanks to

the cattle section stewards, exhibitors and sponsors for ensuring another successful cattle section at the 2011 Binnaway show.

The Bowen Brothers also had a modified ride on lawn mower competing. The results for the traction pull as follows:12HP & under 1st Bowen Brothers12-19 HP 1st Bowen Brothers20+ HP 1st Scott BrothersAnother section was the technical design class and this class clearly demonstrated that these boys are future welders & engineers! Binnaway Boxing Gym AGMHard to believe it has been 12 months since the Binnaway Amateur Boxing Gym was incorporated. After a bit of fund raising, and many volunteer hours later, we have established a boxing and fitness facility that would make larger communities envious. Through the leadership of Rhonda and Merv the gym now has three bags, two speed balls, medicine balls, mitts, gloves and an actual boxing ring, amongst other things. This gym is quite an impressive site.We invite all members of the community to come have a look. You never know, you too could decide boxing and fitness can be fun. 60 members can't all be wrong. Training is Monday to Thursday. Primary aged kids start at 4pm, older kids and men at 5pm and ladies fitness is at 6pm.The Gym is also due to have its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 13th April 2011 at 7pm. We invite all members, parents and interested people to attend.Clinton Andrews

Art2Go Creative Industries Mentoring ProgramLooking for some inspiration to give your arts practise a kick-start this year? Well, Orana Arts may have the answer for you! This program is customised, one-on-one mentoring for those operating in the creative industries with professionals from the Orana Arts region. It’s open to anyone at any stage of their art career. Even better, there is no cost to participate, with forums held throughout the program to assist with networking and getting to know the mentors better. This program is funded through I&I NSW’s Business Growth Program.Outcomes may include (but are not limited to) participants improving your business management skills identifying and facilitating business growth, or new markets for your work and providing opportunities for artists who are running small businesses to develop networking skills, access peer review sessions and develop collaborations. All artists from any art form – literature, music, performance, screen, new media arts – are accepted, including cross disciplinary with up to 20 places available. Regional Arts Development Officer for Orana Arts Merryn Spencer is delighted that Orana Arts will offer a program helping artists develop their business skills and reach new marketplaces. “The main prerequisite is that participants are willing to grow and be challenged in your art form practise. Up to 20 applicants will be accepted for the program in 2011,” she commented. “All of the mentors have been chosen for the program because of their previous experience in an artform, in business, marketing or coaching background. They have specialist skills and passion for arts and cultural development.”Participants nominate a mentor from the select 5 mentors who all live and work in the region. They are Jen Cowley, Kerry Phipps, Kerry Ellen, Jack Randell and Kim Goldsmith.“They are keen to see emerging artists and the burgeoning creative industries in the region grow and learn, and have networks which may help you. They also have a close understanding of the challenges and joys of working and living in a regional area.” The mentors can provide honest and constructive feedback for you in a supportive learning environment, through phone and email support and also supported travel. The mentoring is supplemented by three regular workshops held from 28 April – 30 October. Closing date for the program is Friday 18 March with applicants notified at the end of March for commencement in April. “There are many different things you can choose to focus on through your mentoring,” commented Ms Spencer. “you can utilise it to manage a personal project throughout the timeframe, or you might want to simply focus on the business side of your arts practise.” “It might be working towards an exhibition from start to finish, planning the promotion and release of a new CD, marketing advice on publishing a new literary work, or receiving some constructive feedback on your work.” To apply, download the PDF from the Orana Arts website http://www.oranaarts.com/Projects/LearningDevelopment.html T: 02 6817 8704 E: [email protected]

BINNAWAY 2013 WE NEED YOUR IDEASMany changes have happened to Binnaway over the years. The large property runs which made up the district in its early days still exist in name although they have been downsized over the years. The Castlereagh river still meanders along the western boundary of town although the need for a punt or a foot bridge have been overtaken by a road bridge and the river itself is a shadow of it’s former glory having silted up over the years. The introduction of rail saw Binnaway witness a boom in its population few other towns west of the divide can match. In it’s heyday Binnaway boasted at various times 4 general stores some of which also sold clothes and shoes, a hospital, a doctor, a chemist, 2 pubs, a newsagent, a bank, 3 garages which also sold new cars , 3 passenger trains going out of town towards Werris Creek, Dubbo and Coonabarabran and of course further if you wanted to go, 2 greengrocers, 2 butchers, a post office which had a Commonwealth bank agency, 2 cafes, a picture theatre, an abattoir, not to mention the numbers of railway and rural workers who made Binnaway their home as well as the workers who pasted through for a day a month or longer. All these characters have in their own way contributed to Binnaway’s growth. The physical changes Binnaway has undergone over the years have not diminished the quality of life that its residents enjoy nor has it changed the spirit the people display when it comes to celebrating our collective achievements. 2013 marks 150 years since the town was first settled with the assistance of a grant of land by Charles Naseby. The 100 year centenary celebrations included parades, wool, wheat and town queens, balls and many other events. To celebrate the 150 year milestone we need your input. We need to know what type of events or activities you think would be a suitable way to celebrate such a milestone. To coordinate the planning of this event a committee will be required to oversee the organisation of the planned events. It would be ideal if all community and sporting groups as well as members of the general public could consider what they would like to see happen. To enable all groups time to consider their suggestions a town meeting will be held in the Hall on Wednesday 11th May starting at 7pm. Please come along and get involved in the planning and organisation of what should be a celebration to remember for the next 50 years

A new way to avoid any .05 alcohol issues while driving:

A friend went out last night and tied one on.Knowing that he was wasted, he did

something that he has never done before. He took a bus home.

He arrived home safe and warm, which seemed really surprising as he has never

driven a bus before.WOMEN WHO KNOW THEIR PLACEBarbara Walters, of 20/20, did a story on gender roles in Kabul, Afghanistan , several years before the Afghan conflict. She noted that women customarily walked five paces behind their husbands. She recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still walk behind their husbands. Despite the overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime, the women now seem to, and are happy to, maintain the old custom.Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked, 'Why do you now seem happy with an old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?'The woman looked Ms. Walters straight in the eyes, and without hesitation said, 'Land Mines.'Moral of the story is (no matter what language you speak or where you go):BEHIND EVERY MAN, THERE'S A SMART WOMANCAR TROUBLEA blonde pushes her BMW into a petrol station. She tells the mechanic it died. After he works on it for a few minutes the mechanic tells her, it's idling smoothly. She says, "What's the story?"He replies, "Just crap in the carburettor"She asks, "How often do I have to do that?"

IN A VACUUMA blonde was playing Trivial Pursuit one night.  It was her turn. She rolled the dice and she landed on Science & Nature. Her question was, "If  you are in a vacuum and someone calls your name, can you hear it?"She thought for a time and then asked, " Is it turned on or off ?"RIVER WALKThere's this blonde out for a Sunday stroll along the Yarra. She comes to the rivers edge and sees another blonde on the opposite bank."Yoo-hoo!" she shouts, "How can I get to the other side?"The second blonde looks up the river then down the river and shouts back,"You  ARE on the other side."

BINNAWAY SHOW RESULTS 2011

Good morning! Here's my little blurb for this edition. Actually... this was sent to me in an email and the original author is unknown to me... but the information is good, so I thought I'd share it with you.All about cucumbers...1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just

one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.

3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.

4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.

5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!!

6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!

7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don't have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.

9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone!

10. Stressed out and don't have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber with react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown the reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.

11. Just finish a business lunch and realize you don't have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the phytochemcials will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.

12. Looking for a 'green' way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but is won't leave streaks and won't harm you fingers or fingernails while you clean.

... AND they taste great too!Hoping you're having a fabulous day. Love and light, Jen. www.healthwithjen.com http://www.youtube.com/user/healthwithjen
