2018 ERGATHON RESULTS

Fundraising for the 2018 Spring Ergathon hasconcluded with great success and LARA isgrateful for the generosity of our families,friends and alumni! Together, we raised$60,621 to fund repairs of existing boats,trailers, etc., the purchase of new equipment,and acquisition of supplies necessary tosupport our rowers. The donations raised willalso be used toward scholarships so that everyLoyola Academy student has the opportunityto row. Thank you to all who donated andhelped us exceed our goal of $50,000. Learnmore here about this critical annual fundraiserand why your donations have been needed tosupport the mission of LARA this spring. Muchthanks goes out to Andy Schumacher forproviding all of the photography, videographyand social media exposure along with the DJfor the event. A huge thank you also goes outto Coaches Brian Martin and Carrie Lofgren forrunning the March competition and to GigiKane and Lori Bigus for organizing this year'shighly successful event.

8 mixed teams of 8 rowers across skill levelscompeted to see who could erg the mostmeters in one hour. Teams were named afterNCAA Sweet Sixteen teams. In all, our teamsrowed a collective 452,213meters. Congratulations to our winning team,Syracuse, pictured below!

LARA wishes to extend a sincere thank youto the coaches and parents who worked sohard to plan and execute a week of traininghere at Dammrich for our novice rowers. Abig thanks goes out to Novice Coaches EganBerne and Dave Smith for their leadership,patience, and hard work. We also wish tocongratulate Susan Locke and Kim Kipp, thisyear's Novice Training Coordinators, for asuccessful week! Thanks to the manyparents who volunteered food and timethroughout the course of training to keepour rowers supervised and fed, and toparent Bill Strnad for documenting theweek's activity via photography andvideography.

SOCIAL MEDIA GURUNEEDED

LARA dad, Andy Schumacher, hasgenerously donated his time over the pastyears creating videos, photographing rowersand keeping the LARA community engagedvia Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. SPRING PRACTICE &REGATTA UPDATES

A listing of dates and locations forupcoming Spring Regattas can be found onthe LARA website here. Last month's CRFRegatta was canceled due to poor/winterweather conditions. We look forward tobetter weather ahead this spring for ourApril and May races!

PARENT MIXER A SUCCESS

Thank you to the Langas family for generouslyopening their home to our group on March24th. Many LARA parents were able to join usfor this fun spring tradition and were treatedby a delicious Mexican meal prepared by LARAsponsor, Flacos Tacos.

ZANESVILLE REMINDERS

The Midwest Scholastic Rowing AssociationChampionship takes place in Zanesville, OHand runs from May 11-13, 2018. Select rowerswill also travel to Zanesville for the Lake DillonSprints, an MSRA Championships "warm up"regatta that runs from April 20-21, 2018. Staytuned for details regarding this trip, boat line-ups (coming via separate email), and the DCregatta also scheduled April 20th-21st whereseveral Varsity boats will travel to scrimmageagainst DC area teams.

Athletes will be booked at the Holiday InnExpress Zanesville at 1101 Spring Street inZanesville, OH 43701 for the Midwest

Please note there is no Novice practice onFriday, April 20th or Saturday, April21st. Stay tuned for information comingsoon via email regarding volunteer needsand logistics for Lake Dillon and DCregatta travel that weekend. (Additionalnote for Novice rowers: Novice practice willbe held earlier than usual on Tuesday, April24th due to Loyola Academy's early releasethat day. The Novice bus will pick upfreshmen early on April 24th followingAspire testing.)

The Judge Dunne Regatta to be held hereat Dammrich has been confirmed forSaturday, May 5th and all rowers willparticipate. Please make a note of this onyour calendar.

TEAM PHOTO

This year's team photo (including bothnovice and varsity rowers) is scheduled forFriday, April 13th at the start of thatafternoon's regularly scheduled practice.Please ask your rower to bring his or herteam uniform for this picture. In the eventof rain, the team photo will be taken onFriday, April 27th.

LARA willnotify parents when these extra rooms arereleased for the Midwest Championships.

SUMMER ROWINGOPPORTUNTIES

LARA is pleased to offer two opportunities forextra rowing practice this summer:

CHANNEL RATS provides a fun and easy-going workout program led by Loyola coachesthat takes place on the water and on the ERGSat Dammrich Rowing Center. Theprogram culminates in a chance to row in theLincoln Park Lagoon at the Chicago Sprints July6th-8th. This program is open to all currentNovice and Varsity rowers, as well as LARAalumni rowers. Channel Rats runs from June18th-July 8th with T-W-Th evening 1.5 hoursessions (times TBD) , and on Saturdays on thewater. The estimated cost is $200 per rowerand includes a t-shirt. BEGINNER AND ADVANCED BEGINNER CREWCAMPS are offered for Jr High students andincoming LA Freshman interested in rowing.Camps run in weekly sessions from June 18th-August 3rd and costs vary by program. Spring break was a great success! NoviceRowers worked hard in unfriendlyChicago weather conditions here atDammrich. Our Novice Coaches shared theirpride in our first year rowers and the greatstrides they made over the course of theweek. Rowers were treated to a pizza partyand bowling night at Wilmette Bowl onFriday, April 6th to celebrate a week of hardwork and technical improvement. Viewphotos from our Novice Spring Traininghere. Varsity Rowers departed the LoyolaAcademy parking lot at 5am on Monday,April 2nd for Oak Ridge, TN. Rowersengaged in morning and afternoon workouts and seat racing throughout the week asVarsity boat line-ups were determined forupcoming spring races. The week in TNended with a team dinner where new Varsityrowers received their boathouse warm-ups,an annual spring training tradition. Viewphotos from our Varsity spring traininghere.

Thank you to our LARA parents forvolunteering time and items, and forforgoing family trips with your rowers sothat they could take part in this criticalspring break training. We look forward towatching our boats this spring when theyshow off the skills that were solidified overthis intense week of training, coaching andbonding.

MAY BOARD MEETING

The LARA board meets monthly and allparents are invited to attend meetings andget more involved in the LARA organization.The next board meeting takes place in theMarilac Room on May 14th at 7pm. Itemsof interest not already included in theevening's agenda will be addressed at asubsequent meeting in the event that timeruns short.

LA GRADUATION

As in past years, LARA anticipates that anumber of boats will have the privilege ofcompeting in the Scholastic Nationals inCamden, NJ. Because this date conflicts withLoyola Academy's commencement ceremonyfor our Senior rowers, LARA Moderator, TimKane is working with Loyola Academy tosecure an alternate graduation date for rowersin the Class of 2018. Stay tuned for details ofthis special event!

The season-ending Spring Banquet takesplace on Sunday, May 20th. This year ourbanquet moves to the Northshore CountryClub. Stay tuned for more details, includingways you can help. Thank you to MelissaHarlan for running this year's event!
