a letter from our chairman

Dear Members,

I can’t believe this is my last letter to you as Chairman of the Board of the Memphis Jewish Community Center. Over the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of leading this great organization alongside Larry Skolnick and his great team of staff. We’ve experienced many changes as we continue to grow.

At the MJCC’s Annual Meeting on April 14 at 5:30pm, I will be passing the reins to the incoming Chairman, Gary Makowsky. You are all invited to this meeting to vote for the new slate of MJCC Board Members and to hear about the great accomplishments of the MJCC over the past year and where we are headed next. The meeting will begin promptly at 5:30, and the reception will follow in the Belz Social Hall.

We are excited about the approaching summer and the expanded offerings at the MJCC Summer Camp. New this year, we have Pirate and Princess Camps, Rock Band, FitRanx, Girl Power Sports, and more. Returning this summer include the very popular Circus Camp, Sabra Camp program, LEGO, Science, Art, and Theater.

Also new at camp this year is a Leadership-in-Training program for our rising 9th and 10th

graders, which will give teens the tools to develop into amazing leaders. LITs will get to do a little bit of everything, including team building, community service, hands-on experience with younger campers, and workshops on various topics that will help them land their first job, whether that is at MJCC Day Camp or somewhere else in the future.

To learn more about camp and to register, get a copy of the brochure at the Member Services Desk or view it online at jccmemphis.org/camp.

August registration in the Early Childhood Center is filling up quickly. Please encourage your friends and family to call the ECC at 901.761.0810 to explore enrollment in the new state-of-the-art Infant Center or any of our other programs.

I look forward to seeing you soon!

Craig Weiss, MJCC Chairman of the Board

Bar Kocva Jewelry from IsraelOpening April 19 from 2–4pmShowing in the Gallery through April 28Israeli-born Bar Kocva is a jewelry designer who uses the finest silver, gold, titanium, semiprecious stones, and ancient Roman glass to create one-of-a-kind brooches, watches, Judaica pieces, and many other exclusive designs. A graduate of the Bezalel School of Art in Jerusalem, he has been a prominent artist in Israel since the 1980s.

Traces of MemoryCoordinated by Memphis in May International Festival On loan from the Galicia Jewish Museum KrakowMay 1–31 in the MJCC LobbyA contemporary look at Jewish past in Poland, Traces of Memory pieces together relics of Jewish life and culture in Polish Galicia that can still be seen today, interpreting these traces in a manner that is informative, accessible, and thought-provoking. The exhibit offers a lament for the destroyed Jewish civilization that once flourished in this country, remembers the locations where annihilation took place, and gives credit to commemorative efforts that have occurred since the Holocaust.

Traces of Memory features photographs by the late Chris Schwarz and is co-curated by Prof. Jonathan Webber (Emeritus, UNESCO Professor of Jewish and Interfaith Studies, University of Birmingham, UK; Professor at the Institute of European Studies, Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland), who also provided the texts.

Through specific research-based curriculum, challengers will engage in new exercises each session that help them learn to enjoy fitness, test their limits, and “level up!” Each participant is allowed to test to level up after 12 workouts, and is invited to continue in classes for free after testing to the black band level. Also, parents can join their young challengers for our Sunday workouts, helping further the commitment to setting healthy lifelong fitness goals.
