Presidents Update - June/July 2020

PRESIDENT’S UPDATE

Well I hope you all are well and coping OK in these very trying times.

I’m sure we are all over it but sadly the virus is still out there ready to pounce so please be safe and follow the Covid guidelines.

With the opportunity now to exercise ourselves with our motorcycles I’d like to confirm subject to the Covid rules that:

The first Monday - 2nd Sunday and Last Wednesday of each month are set aside as official club ride opportunities.

Meeting at McGraths Hill Maccas for a 10am departure.

I was hoping too to advise of a club meeting in fact the Annual General Meeting (AGM) for August but unfortunately the rules do not permit this at present so the AGM is postponed until we can again meet.

So for the moment stay safe and be safe if riding your bikes and I look forward to a more normal existence.

Best Regard Pete Drury

Ed’s Desk - June / July 2020

Welcome to our June/July 2020 Magazine - Bit late...apologies...Hoping all

our members are staying safe and doing well. First Motogp of the year (for the

big bikes anyway)...and what a race...spills and thrills...Marquez was out front

leading and had a major front end lose...he rode it on the knee and elbow to

the edge of the track, got it upright and rode it thru the gravel to re-joined the

race in 18th, from there it was a how to ride a motoGP bike lesson...all the way

back to 3rd...where he high-sided out with a spectacular crash...the bike hit

him on the way to the fence and now out with a broken arm...Crutchlow had

a crash in morning warm up and was out with a broken wrist (scaffoid bone)

...lots of spills in practice and a few in the race...Congrats to Yamaha boy

Quartararo with his first win...Vinales in 2nd Dovi in 3rd...and our boy Miller in

4th with a good patient ride. Another race the following weekend and another

straight after that...and another...so it will be a busy time...and not much time

for bones and bruises to heal. Always glad to get your comments - Troy Maher

Vale - Frank SloanMACQUARIE TOWNS MOTORCYCLE RESTORATION and PRESERVATION CLUB

1st June 2020

Dear Gwen,

It was with great sadness that we learned of

Frank’s passing. He was a great club member

and office bearer for many years. We know he

will be sorely missed being able to join in on our

club rides and activities.

It is a pity that this virus shut down has prevented

the club from running our regular meetings – special

mention of Frank will be made at our first allowable

meeting.

You have been a tower of strength through difficult times,

your devotion to Frank has been obvious and worthy of our

highest praise.

All the best wishes from the

members at Macquarie Towns

Restoration and Preservation Club.

EVENT REPORT - Warragamba For Lunch - 14th June 2020

WARRAGAMBA FOR LUNCH - 14 June 2020

A Second Sunday, so an informal ride had been planned, but unfortunately weather didn’t understand my requests for good riding conditions and although rain actually held off the roads were pretty wet. Who would get out on a bike on such a day? Well, Trevor decided to put his best wheel forward and see if anyone else would turn up. I took the Cressida out for a run (bit of mud wouldn’t show) and we had a nice tour for a couple of hours. Messages had come from a number of other members saying they’d meet us for lunch, and sure enough we found a bright group waiting at the table I’d booked at Warragamba Workers’ Club.

The Workers’ Club has put appropriate restrictions in place very strictly, and there was plenty of space around our jolly table. Jeff Farrugia won the prize for best stories (and heartiest consumption of delicious food), while I got the wooden spoon for spilling a visible quantity of Tooheys Old on the table – a tragic waste of draught beer after such a long time without it.

Full marks to the cheerful Workers’ staff - front of house, bar and bistro - who made us all so welcome in this very pleasant little club.

Many thanks to The Freemans, Thatchers and Farrugias for a lovely afternoon with lots of happy social chat. Kathleen Toovey

EVENT REPORT - First Monday Ride - July 2020

FIRST MONDAY RIDE - 6 July 2020

Rod Brigham chose a cold morning for the first ride in July! Nonetheless, a hardy group of familiar (and some unfamiliar) faces turned out in their thermals and neck rolls for a nice morning ride in good company.

The plan was Wiseman’s Ferry, so off everyone went across the new bridge and out to Sackville Ferry, up to Maroota then directly to Wiseman’s for refreshments. Most riders made this an early lunch stop at one or other of the village cafes before heading their separate ways home. A couple decided to retrace the route via Sackville and have early afternoon tea at Tractor 828: wrong! Oh it’s a lovely spot, with good food and coffee, but the word has got out and the place was absolutely PACKED. Anyway, it was a nice break for Michael Hall before heading back to where he’d parked the car and bike trailer for the journey home to Portland; Trevor showed him the way up Old Sackville Road and across into Kurmond Road.

Karen Drury was riding pillion with Peter, and Susan was with Terry Dingwall; Graham Cooper, Peter Dowding, Ray Stanfield, Graham Laughton, Garry Appleyard and Michael Powell, John Quinnell, a few from the Classic Club and send-off party Alan Harper.

See you next month, same time, same start location; stay well!

EVENT REPORT - Narellan Ride - 12th July 2020

NARELLAN RIDE - 12 July 2020

This time, Trevor was the rider who piked due to the weather – he couldn’t see through the fog whether it was clearing up or not, so he came in the car with me. McGrath’s Hill Maccas can be a very popular meeting place on Sunday mornings so when we saw a clutch of bikes we assumed they were with some other group, but it turned out that 8 of them were with us, as well as Albert and Peter in the shiny black Adamson Jaguar.

I’d booked a table at Narellan Hotel, and TT and I had mapped out a leisurely ride to get there, while avoiding Penrith and all parts of The Northern Road. Apart from Michael Powell, who peeled off at Marsden Park, everyone was happy for me to confirm the lunch booking and they didn’t mind following a car instead of a bike along a simple route.

When we arrived, some confusion about the table we’d booked was sorted by a table on the outdoor terrace, where we lingered over lunch and tall stories until Steve Runnalls (the aviator in the group) spotted a serious rain cloud approaching from the south-west which sent all the riders on their way pdq. Between Runnalls (on the doorstep of home) and Richmond (heading back to Dee Why), everyone else had a clear picture of which road they’d be taking and I understand all made it in their respective doors without getting their bikes wet. EVENT REPORT - Wallacia For Lunch - 24th June 2020

WALLACIA FOR LUNCH - 24 June 2020

For quite a lot of years, the scheduled June Midweek Run has been a trial for the Sunday Ride of The Annual Rally; although the Rally is off I had a ride in mind for the Sunday so we rode over that (and extended it a bit). Maybe you can ride it again this time next year?

While we’re all somewhat restricted, meeting point for all rides is McGrath’s Hill Maccas; as we grabbed a cuppa by way of morning tea quite a few riders turned up then I outlined the itinerary we would follow and rang ahead to Wallacia Pub to book a couple of tables.

Trevor led the group, having practised the route 10 days ago by himself. We set off across the new bridge and Up the Putty to East Kurrajong Road, down Tennyson Road, right to the end of Kurmond Road, back across the river and through the orchards, along to Agnes Banks and back across the river (now called Nepean, having changed its name where it meets the Grose), up to Hawkesbury Lookout for a pit stop and chat. Then we headed to GWH for a short run then followed the down side of the rail line to Blaxland, down Mitchell’s Pass to Emu Plains, out to M4 and across the river once more, slip down to Mulgoa Road and out to lunch.

We had a pleasing mixture of machinery on this ride, along with very good company. Nice to meet Michael Powell, Garry’s Godson, who is one of those QANTAS workers in limbo at present; welcome any time to join our rides, Michael. Michael Richmond sacrificed surfing for riding his HD, all the way from Dee Why, while Michael Hall had a special family birthday date. KT
