President’s Column

Hi, Everyone. The touring season is here and the SouthernCalifornia weather that we thought we might not see again hasreturned. In addition to the wonderful flowers, the mountainsand canyons are very lush and green. Great time for a drive!

Thanks to Nedra for organizing the March dinner event atJay’s. We held our usual raffle, despite no one steppingforward to assume raffle duties. I shopped for the prizes andconducted the raffle. It was fun! So, let’s try somethingdifferent. How about agreeing to do the raffle for 1 or 2months only? That way, you aren’t committing yourself toattending every event. The Board and I think this would work.Give me a call if you’d like to help out. Unless someonecomes forward, there will not be a raffle at our April clubevent.

There will be at least 2 opportunities to back the Jag out of thegarage this month. First up on Sunday, April 10th, our Jags willconvene at 2 PM at the Bay Beach Café in Coronado. Join uson the outdoor deck of this fun restaurant at the west end ofFerry Landing. We will enjoy a no-host bar, followed bylunch, while we watch the bay traffic (air and sea) and the SanDiego skyline. A relaxing afternoon on the bay! Please see thedetails later in this issue.

Next up is Rolling British Car Day on Sunday, April 17th. Allcars British will gather in the parking lot behind the KrispyKreme Doughnuts in the Clairemont Towne Square by 10 AM.Most of us will get there by 9 AM to swap stories and admirethe cars! You will see everything in the parking lot: Minis,Deloreans, Bentleys, Rollers, and, of course, many gracefulJags. After a brief meeting, with route sheets in hand, the carsstart rolling out at 10:30 AM. This is a fun (no pressure) drivethrough little-traveled areas of San Diego, ending at Buca diBeppo Italian Restaurant in Mira Mesa for lunch. You can dothis drive with or without a navigator. The route alwaysdoubles back on itself with a U-turn, which explains why someof us wear a tiara to this event. As we wave to the other Britishcar drivers coming from the opposite direction, we rememberthe British etiquette rule governing waving: never wave withyour hand held higher than your tiara! This is the 10th

anniversary of this event and the San Diego British Car ClubCouncil (who organizes this event) is looking to get 150British cars to participate. No registration, just bring your Jag.Grab your Jaguar apparel (tiara optional) and come out forsome fun!

And last, but not least, please join me in welcoming GayleAskren as the new First Vice President. He is very excited tobe stepping into this position. Thank you Gayle.

Enjoy life’s drive,Hazel Jaguar Tracks April 2005 Page 3

However, the board feels an obligation to club members to offer at least one rally a year. The rally may be offered asan optional event later in the year.

Katherine Partain has volunteered to make the route and food arrangements for a “Drive & Dine” on May 15th to Bates Nut Farm inValley Center, for the May 2005 club event.

Tech-Tips: From Bonnet To BootBy Paul Novak

My Jaguar hobby began in early 2000 when I decidedto own one of these beautiful machines. But which one (or ones)should I buy? With so many beautiful cars to choose from, thiswas a very tough decision. I purchased some Jaguar books, didsome Internet on-line research, talked to current Jaguar owners, and then in September 2000 I purchased my first Jaguar. It wasa 1984 XJ6 Vanden Plas. This car is my daily driver and I havedriven it 50K miles since I purchased it. My Jaguar collectionhas grown to include a 1969 XKE Fixed Head Coupe (my fundriver), a 1990 XJ-S Convertible (my wife’s car), and mostrecently a 1957 Mark VIII Saloon (my first major restorationproject). My interest in these cars was initially just fortransportation, but I have found Jaguar ownership to be a veryfun and rewarding hobby.

Over the past 5 years I have: acquired an extensiveJaguar technical and reading library; joined several Jaguar Websites and email lists; and learned to perform most of the servicingand maintenance work on my cars myself. Having more thanone Jaguar certainly helps as it gives me the flexibility and timeto research the source of the occasional problems, order parts, perform the servicing or maintenance work and then get the carback on the road again. I started out learning how to do theroutine servicing actions like oil changes and then moved on tomore ambitious maintenance work like the removal andreplacement of an engine cylinder head and then the completeengine bay restoration for my 1984 XJ6 Vanden Plas. I havelearned that working on my Jaguars myself has not only increasedmy knowledge and understanding of these cars and reduced mycost of ownership, but it has also helped me to learn someinteresting things about cars and meet some wonderful peoplewho I might not have met otherwise. I have also brought mycars in for professional work when the problems clearly exceededmy abilities, tools and available time constraints.

“Tech-Tips: From Bonnet To Boot” referring to the British terms for the engine hood “bonnet” and for the trunk “boot”

Since becoming one of the SDJC Directors, I havediscussed with other SDJC officers how best to meet the needsof our members interested in a more technical approach to Jaguarownership. With the full support of Hazel Beck, the SDJCPresident, I have offered to lead that effort by writing this newcolumn for our “Jaguar Tracks” newsletter, as well as arrangingworkshops and special events catering to those interested inlearning more about working on and maintaining these wonderfulmachines. I have decided to name my column “Tech-Tips: FromBonnet To Boot” referring to the British terms for the enginehood “bonnet” and for the trunk “boot” and implying that I willcover anything pertaining to the car. Each month I plan to provideinformation on different aspects of Jaguar maintenance, servicingand restoration. I will have a feature called “Who’s Who InThe Zoo” with articles on people, organizations or businesses

like our local San Diego shops that specialize in Jaguars, profilingtheir expertise and capabilities. I will also have a feature called“Intake And Exhaust” where members can provide me withtheir questions on Jaguar maintenance related problems and Iwill research and provide suggestions on how best to proceed.

Please look to future issues of the SDJC Jaguar Tracksfor “Tech-Tips: From Bonnet To Boot” for ways to get the most out of your Jaguar(s). Send your “Intake AndExhaust” questions or suggestions to me at:[email protected].

Minutes ( continued from page 14)approval is in part a result of Mr. Steve Cushman’s lobbyingefforts on behalf of our club. It should be noted that the PortCommission had no complaints regarding SDJC’s previousevents at Spanish Landing. JCNA has sanctioned approval ofthe SDJC Concours, moving it from August 7th to August 14,2005.

Curtis Parker reported he will not Chair the 2005 Concours.Curtis Parker and Sandy Millard have prepared a set ofguidelines for the next Concours Chairperson and will assist inthe transition and registration. The board discussed variousmembers who might be interested in chairing this event; HazelBeck will contact those members. Hazel Beck reportednumerous members indicated they would be interested inworking on the Courcours on the 2005 Membership InterestSurvey. She suggested inviting those members to a pizzaparty in March to form various Concours Committees. Curtissuggested assigning members to be responsible for specificactivities, acquiring supplies and staffing various functions forthe Concours event. The most labor-intensive area isConcours registration, which will be handled by Curtis andSandy. Curtis Parker asked the board’s opinion regardingpurchasing two additional green canopies to replace thosestolen in 2004. They are currently available at Wal-Mart forapproximately $100 each.
