Greetings WakeMed Volunteers!

We hope this newsletter finds you enjoying the summertime weather. Volunteer Services has been actively working to collaborate with our partners across the system. The President’s Report - Raleigh Campus

Greeting to the WakeMed Volunteers!

I hope this message finds you enjoying this time of year.

Our schedules get a little hectic this time of year. With seniors graduating; summer travel with family and friends; and for our WakeMed patients, there are expected and unexpected medical visits added into the mix.

Although it can be a frustrating time; in the grand scheme of things, it's just a moment in time.

In the midst of their busy schedules, two of our Volunteer staff members have also made the time to improve their abilities to serve WakeMed. Please join me in congratulating Jackie Kennedy for her certification in Healthcare Volunteer Management. In addition, Chris Gage has been elected as the Assistant Vice President in Continuing Education for the Society of Healthcare Volunteer Leaders. Both of these ladies have taken on avenues that will result in helping us be better at what we do! Thanks ladies and well done!

Do any of you remember playing with Mr. Potato Head as a kid! Well one of the recently funded board requests utilizes our childhood friend in an amazing way. “The Potato Head Project exists because it gives parents of premature babies hope. Hope when you have no idea what is going on and no idea where to turn. It gives you something to look forward to, it gives you something to hold on tight to because the truth of the matter is . . . in the NICU hope is all you have.”* Visit the website https://www.thepotatoheadproject.org/ to read some of the incredible stories of how families of micro-preemie babies have found hope in that childhood toy.

At the June 13 board meeting, the Raleigh Volunteer Board hosted the Cary Volunteer Board for a collaborative luncheon and meeting. Together we talked about the impact that we (YOU) have made and would want to make in the future. These meetings keep things in perspective, especially when life is busy and we think our individual effort might not be as substantial as it truly is. It's a helpful perspective because I get to see first hand the volunteer community sharing their love and concern and serving our WakeMed family in so many different ways.

So, thanks for being a part of this WakeMed community. The summer may just be a moment in time; but the time, talents and enthusiasm that you share make a lifetime impact.

The President’s Report - Cary Hospital

Hello All, It has been an exciting time to serve on the WakeMed Cary Volunteer Board of Directors. The nominating committee has been very active with interviews of prospective board members. This year, we have had a wealth of volun-teers express interest in joining the board. We are thankful for so much interest as it is such an important and rewarding service. We have had two prospective board candidates attend the May board meeting to help them clarify and understand this role, while allowing our current members

the opportunity to meet and understand a little more about each of them. We plan to continue with this process until new members are selected. It is essential that we invite new members to join this group each year, as this adds to our diverse perspectives on board related matters. In the April board meeting, we had an excellent presentation of the WakeMed Milk Bank located in WakeMed Cary Hospital. Montana Wagner-Gillespie, the newly appointed Manager of the Milk Bank, shared information and a funding request for a Milk Dispensing Pump. This pump will allow greater precision and volume in milk processing, which in turn, enables it to reach more fragile infants in the community. The funding request was taken on as a collaborative effort with the Raleigh Volunteer Board of Directors. It was approved by both boards and we are glad to be a part of such an impactful funding initiative. Montana invited those interested to stop in and take a tour of the Milk Bank. It is a special area that is very supportive of volunteers. In the May board meeting, we had a presentation from Lisa Koch, Staff Chaplain who reviewed the different services they provide. The board presently funds support for two services in this area: Tea for the Soul and Bereavement support. We are thankful to have such great leaders in this area, helping our patients, families, and staff as we journey through healthcare together. Tom Gough, senior vice president & administrator, Cary Hospital, has been keeping the board updated on our facility. Most recently, he noted that from October 2016 thru March 2017 there have been 542 more inpatients than the same time period the previous year. He is focusing on new services such as thoracic surgeries, breast surgeries, and advanced GI procedures. He informed us there are 50/55 surgeries a day in the Cary Facility. He also let us know that the Woman's Pavilion and Birthplace project should be completed in August. We are all excited for this new space for our patients and families. In closing, I would like to wish all WakeMed volunteers a happy and healthy early summer! Hopefully we will have some drier weather - looking forward to working with you in the coming year.

Respectfully Submitted, Joe Esmond

My name is Vernon Burkhart. I moved here about 9 years ago from Jersey City, NJ. I came here to watch my son get married and I en-joyed the greenery so much, I decided to move here.

In NJ, I worked with an organization that dealt with children with HIV/AIDS. I was also highly involved assisting people who were terminally ill and facing end of life decisions. I became a leader of support groups, went to Washington, DC and spoke on be-half of the needs of the children and their parents or in most cases their grandparents. Once I relocated to Raleigh I continued my involve-ment within the community I have grown to love. I am presently the chairperson of the CAB. (Citizens of the Action Board). CAB is a Ryan White funding that Wake County receives for those affected with HIV/AIDS. In the years I have spent with WakeMed I have worked providing support for Environmental Ser-vices and enjoyed it immensely. Currently I serve as a Guest Ambassador at WakeMed Raleigh Campus which I love because it allows me the op-portunity to speak and interact with many different people. I also provide office support at WakeMed Corporate Offices for Construction and Design. This new role has taught me new skills along with making new friends. Besides WakeMed, I also serve at my church. I serve on the financial committee and as a host for the round table events held on Tuesdays and Thursdays that provides meals and companionship for those in need. I enjoy camping with my friends and going on hikes. Some of my favorite pass times is going to the movies with my grandson Kieran and I enjoy walking my dogs Keillee and Dexter.

“My name is Anameeka (Annu) Singh and I have lived in Cary, North Carolina all my life – in fact, I was born at the WakeMed Cary Hospital! My parents are both engineers and I have one brother who is pursuing a career in the computer world as well. I recently graduated from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) but I attended Green Hope High School for the first two years of high school before coming to NCSSM. I will be attending the University of Pittsburgh in the fall to major in Neuroscience and pursue my dream of becoming a neurosurgeon. My desire to get experience working in a hospital environment and interacting with patients is what led me to volunteer at WakeMed Cary Hospital. I have thoroughly enjoyed the four years I have spent volunteering at the Gift Shop. From manag-ing the cash register, re-stocking shelves, deliver-ing gifts to patients, to having the privilege of talk-ing and building bonds with staff, patients, and families, the innumerable stories and experiences I have garnered are priceless memories that have shaped me and I will carry with me into the future. When I’m not volunteering, I enjoy reading, writing, playing piano, playing tennis, listening to music, singing, etc. Throughout my high school career, I served as the president of Green Hope’s National Beta Club, a leader of NCSSM’S Service Learning Board, and a Residential (Life) Assistant in NCSSM’s student community. I was also an active player on the Green Hope High School and NCSSM Women’s Varsity Tennis Teams, serving as co-captain of the NCSSM team my senior year.”

Financial Officer We are pleased to announce Rick Carrico, MBA, CPA, will join WakeMed in early May as executive vice president and chief financial of-ficer (CFO). Carrico comes to us from Greater Hudson Valley Health System in Middletown, New York, a multi-hospital integrated health system, where he has served as vice president and chief financial officer since 2014. He pre-viously served seven years as associate CFO at Norton Healthcare Inc., in Louisville, Ken-tucky, a not-for-profit system with annual reve-nues in excess of $1.5 billion dollars. As CFO, Carrico will be responsible for Wake-Med’s overall financial operations, including planning, strategic sourcing, revenue cycle and all accounting functions. He will work closely with our Board of Directors, Strategic Leader-ship Team, and departments across the sys-tem to ensure strong financial performance and to position WakeMed for continued future success. “I am pleased to welcome Rick to WakeMed and look forward to working with him as we continue to adopt a value-based approach while ensuring the long-term financial health of the organization,” commented Donald Gintzig, WakeMed president and CEO. “Rick is an ex-ceptional leader whose broad experience and financial expertise will be a great benefit to us here at WakeMed.”

Carrico brings over 30 years of experience in health care strategy, operations, finance, reve-nue cycle and auditing and has worked at both not-for-profit and for-profit organizations. He has worked for multi-facility health systems in New York, Kentucky and Florida. Carrico holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ken-tucky. Recruitment for a CFO has been underway since Mike Browning departed WakeMed last summer. In the interim, Stephanie Sessoms has been serving as acting CFO. EMPLOYEE & MEDICAL STAFF UPDATE April 18, 2017

WakeMed and Duke Health Announce Cancer Care Collaboration

We are pleased to share that we have signed an agreement with Duke Health to establish an in-novative collaboration in the critically important area of oncology/cancer services, effective May 1, 2017. The primary goal of the collaboration is to meet the growing and future community health need for a comprehensive, high-quality, fully in-tegrated, value-based cancer care network that is easily accessed across all of Wake County. “Working together with our colleagues at Duke to streamline, enhance and expand the delivery of oncology care in Wake County is an exciting de-velopment for patients, caregivers and the com-munities we serve,” explains Donald Gintzig, WakeMed president & CEO. “This agreement supports both WakeMed and Duke’s commit-ment to improving the scope, quality and value of care we offer to our patients and their families through innovative and cooperative collabora-tions with like-minded organizations.” As stated with the Heart Care Plus+ collabora-tion, this agreement does not represent a mer-ger, any intention to merge, or any other over-arching formal organizational affiliation between Duke and WakeMed. Both organizations will continue to retain their identities and operate in-dependently. This relationship supports Wake-Med’s mission and strategic plan – helping to improve the health and well-being of our commu-nity while clearly aligning with our 10 aspirational goals.

Cancer Care Plus+ Our shared cancer care collaboration will be known as Cancer Care Plus+. It will establish a comprehensive cancer service throughout the WakeMed system that is fully integrated with Duke Cancer Institute locations in Wake County and anchored at Duke Raleigh Hospital.

Cancer Care Plus+ includes the collaboration’s combined cancer care capabilities and locations in Wake County. Working together to establish a broad network of cancer care locations will allow Cancer Care Plus+ to provide the highest-quality cancer care consistent with Duke’s renowned cancer service and WakeMed’s surgical oncology expertise. Cancer Care Plus+ will offer streamlined screen-ing and access to cancer clinical trials, broaden multi-disciplinary care team capabilities in Wake County, expand access to an array of supportive care services, such as hereditary and genetic counseling, and where needed, access to reha-bilitation services. WakeMed already provides a great deal of care to cancer patients. Through this collaboration, our goal is to expand the scope of services avail-able and to enhance the coordination of care; while also integrating with Duke’s world-class cancer program. In addition, we expect to estab-lish a coordinated cancer-focused nursing/professional staff and care protocols throughout WakeMed and the Cancer Care Plus+ service line. Similar to our Heart Care Plus+ collaboration, a governance structure has been established to facilitate the implementation and oversight of this collaboration, all of which will include representa-tion from both WakeMed and Duke Health. Lori Pickens, vice president for oncology services for Duke University Health System will serve as the service line executive for Cancer Care Plus+. While teams have been meeting up to this point to formulate a strategy and business plan, the real work begins now in terms of operationalizing our independent teams, defining processes and workflows, and fully integrating the work we do in the best interest of our patients. Updates on both Cancer Care Plus+ and Heart Care Plus+ will be shared regularly over the next several months and on an ongoing basis in the future.

WakeMed Updates continued

UPDATE May 1, 2017 Dear Fellow WakeMed Employees, Physicians and Volunteers: It is that time of year again where we celebrate our greatest strength: each of you. As Em-ployee Appreciation Month gets underway, I wanted to personally thank you for all you do for our organization and for our patients and their families. Thank you for sharing your gifts with us for the greater good of our community. This spring has been a particularly busy one for us here at WakeMed. More patients trust us with their care, which means many of you have been working harder than you already do. We also have many important initiatives underway tied to our Wake Way 2 Excellence work that require extra attention and time. Throughout it all – no matter how busy you are – you continue to exemplify the Wake Way and go above and beyond for our patients and their families. Your unwavering dedication, com-passion and hard work allow us to continue caring for this community as we have done every day for the last 55 years. I am so proud to be a member of the WakeMed family and to be able to say “I am WakeMed.” This is a place that brings me great joy – both in the work that I have the priv-ilege to do, but especially in the people that I have the honor to know. Your professionalism, passion for delivering quality care and selfless dedication to our mission inspire me. It is my personal wish that you continue to find joy and fulfillment. Thank you again for all you do. May God con-tinue to bless us all.

Very respectfully, Donald

President & CEO

UPDATE June 14, 2017

Two Executive Team Leaders Take on New Roles

We are pleased to announce that two mem-bers of our executive leadership team will soon take on new roles and responsibilities. These changes will take effect in early July. Becky Andrews Promoted Senior VP & Ad-ministrator, Raleigh Campus After serving as Raleigh Campus interim sen-ior vice president & administrator for most of the past year, Becky Andrews has been select-ed to assume this role permanently. A mem-ber of the WakeMed family for more than 30 years, Andrews is a well-respected executive leader with a proven track record of success. In her new role, Andrews will work in dyad partnership with Chuck Harr, MD, the chief medical officer for Raleigh Campus. As dyad partners, they will have primary responsibility for leading, defining, and executing the enter-prise’s strategic direction and overall opera-tions. In addition to her new Raleigh Campus role, Andrews will continue to provide leadership for health information and utilization management functions. Georgia Harrington to Lead Strategic Ven-tures Georgia Harrington, vice president of opera-tions, will be transitioning to a system-wide role as vice president of strategic ventures. Re-porting to Denise Warren, executive vice presi-dent & COO, Harrington will work closely with Rick Shrum, vice president & chief strategy of-ficer, to develop and support strategic relation-ships and business development opportunities for WakeMed that align with and support our mission and aspirational goals.

Specifically, Harrington will provide oversight for our collaborations and joint ventures, physi-cian service agreements as well as Wake-Med’s current and future business develop-ment functions. She will also be responsible for overseeing our strategic innovation efforts which includes establishing a formalized struc-ture and process for identifying, vetting and investing in new innovation and technology opportunities. The Raleigh Campus and system-wide opera-tions functions previously reporting to Harring-ton will transition to other leaders, who will add these roles to their current responsibilities: Executive Director of Pharmacy Valerie Barlow will become executive director of Clinical Ser-vices and add oversight for Laboratory Ser-vices and Imaging Services. Because these are system-wide functions, Barlow will report to Denise Warren. Director of Ambulatory Services Oral Wise will become executive director of Ambulatory and Support Services with added responsibility for Environmental Services, Food & Nutrition Ser-vices, Laundry & Linen Services, Mobile Criti-cal Care, and Spiritual Care. For these new areas of responsibility, Wise will report to Den-ise Warren. Clinical Engineering will report to Information Services. Campus Police will report to Becky Andrews. Additionally, we are pleased to announce that Kelly Guthrie has been promoted to the role of executive director of Revenue Cycle and Health Information Management. In this new role, she will report to Rick Carrico, executive vice president & CFO.
