See Atlantarepresentedby the iconicartifactsthat shapedour history.— ThroughDecember 2016

Welcome and Bonjour!

During one memorable week in 2016 metropolitanAtlanta will become the focus and the inspiration forAmerica’s greatest outdoor Impressionist landscape painters.Thirty-five of the top tier plein air painters haveaccepted the invitation and the challenge of the second annual Olmsted PleinAir Invitational. They will traveltoAtlanta to paint their vision and we anticipate the thrill of seeing our familiar landmarks through theirdiscriminating eyes.

The event isApril 25th - May 1st and celebrates the 194th Birthday ofAmerican landscape architect, FrederickLaw Olmsted, Sr. It will take place across our city at theAtlanta History Center campus, theAtlanta BotanicalGarden, hosting a show of Chihuly glass art,The Shops BuckheadAtlanta, and culminating in the OlmstedLinear Park.

These locations will be captured by NorthAmerica’s greatest plein air painters who will paint and documenttheseAtlanta cultural and business locations, creating a legacy for future generations to enjoy.

Each evening the public is invited to ticketed events allowing them to meet and mingle with the invited artists. At the end of the show, the hundreds of diverse and enchanting paintings produced during the week will beoffered to Friends, Sponsors,Collectors at the Druid Hills Golf Club.

In addition to broadening the plein air movement,we hope to expand the knowledge and culture of plein air, accomplished through event lectures, demonstrations and educational programs in theArtistVillage. The publicis invited to paint alongside the invited artists in the park during our Paint Quick competition. Additionally, the Olmsted PleinAir Invitational is delighted to present 25 sponsored scholarships offered to high schoolstudents for Paint Quick competition.

This marks the second year of what we believe will become an annual art event deserving of our fair city. For one week the Olmsted PleinAir Invitational will shine with the light of art and inspiration as we share inthe amazing phenomenon the plein air movement has become.Through all the various events our goal is tobring together all who share our love of art and our city. We both wish to express our sincere thanks andgratitude for allowing us to be part of this grand artistic experience.

Let’sToast toArt!

What is enPlein Air?

En plein air is a French expression whichmeans “in the open air” and is particularly usedto describe the act of painting outdoors, which isalso called peinture sur le motif (“painting of theobject(s) or what the eye actually sees”). In painting,“sur le motif” reproduces the actual visual condi-tions seen at the time of the painting.Artists havelong painted outdoors, but in the mid-19th Centuryworking in natural light became particularly impor-tant to the Barbizon school, the Hudson RiverSchool and Impressionism. The popularity of paint-ing en plein air increased in the 1840s with theintroduction of paints in tubes (resembling moderntoothpaste tubes). Previously, painters made theirown paints by grinding and mixing dry pigmentpowders with linseed oil.

It was during this period that the “Box Easel”, typi-cally known as the French Box Easel or field easel, was invented. It is uncertain who developed it first, but these highly portable easels, with telescopiclegs and built-in paint box and palette, made treksinto the forest and up the hillsides less onerous.Still made today, they remain a popular choiceeven for home use, since they fold up to the sizeof a briefcase, and thus are easy to store.

Welcome toAtlanta’s Second OlmstedPlein Air Invitational!

Once again,Atlanta joins the prestigious ranks of towns and citiesholding plein air painting competitions; forward-looking localesthat recognize the importance of theArts to the surrounding

Community.TheArts speak to each of us individually in a way thatenhances our lives.TheArts teach us about the world we live in.In particular, plein air painting allows us to view our familiar

Atlanta landmarks through the discriminating eyes of recognizedartists, documenting these places for posterity.
