Cooper Bone and Joint Institute Partners With Inspira Medical Center to Expand Services

The Kevin G. Halpern Board Room On April 16, Cooper University Health Care dedicated the board room on the 10th floor of the Roberts Pavilion in memory of Kevin G. Halpern who served as Chief Executive Officer of The Cooper Health System for 18 years from 1981 to 1999. Through his leader-ship, Cooper achieved significant growth, transforming from its roots as a community hospital into the region’s only university medical center. During his tenure, Cooper became a state-designated Level 1 Trauma Center and also a Children’s Regional Hospital. His leadership and vision paved the way for the Cooper Health Sciences Campus of today. Mr. Halpern, who died in September 2012, was a dedicated community

A Salute to Volunteers During National Volunteer Month

Berkowitz Lecture: How Emotions Affect Clinical Decisions

Congratulations to Montrice Johnson, of Gloucester City, who was named Volunteer of the Year. Ms. Johnson has been volunteering with Cooper since 2012 in the Medical Staff Services office.

Left to Right: Susan Bass Levin, President and Chief Executive Officer, the Cooper Foundation; John McGeehan, MD, Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions; Paul Katz, MD, Dean, Cooper Medical School of Rowan University; Barbara Berkowitz; Edwin Berkowitz; Danielle Ofri, MD, PhD, D.Litt (Hon), FACP, Associate Professor of Medicine of New York University School of Medicine, Editor-in-Chief, Bellevue Literary Review and New York Times writer; Arthur Berkowitz; Julie Berkowitz; and Adrienne Kirby, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cooper University Health Care.

Despite years of scientific training, emotions often play a role in how physicians make clinical decisions. Physician and author Danielle Ofri, MD, PhD, a nationally known expert who has studied the relationship between emotions and the delivery of medical care, discussed this topic at the Second Annual Berkowitz Lecture sponsored

by the Cooper Foundation on April 9 at the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. The Berkowitz Lecture series is made possible by a generous gift from The Berkowitz Family Foundation to sponsor annual educational pro-grams for physicians and students on a variety of medical ethics featuring world-renowned experts in the field.

April was National Volunteer Month. Since its inception in 1974, National Volunteer Month has been about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their community. Nowhere is the spirit of volunteerism more evident than at Cooper University Health Care. Every day, 365 days a year, Cooper’s 390 volunteers selflessly give their time and talents to help Cooper achieve its vision to be the premier health care provider in the region. On April 10, approximately 90 volunteers joined hospital staff and leaders at the annual luncheon recognizing our volunteers for their unwavering support and continued generosity of time and talents.

Cooper Advanced Access Initiative Turns Episodic Care into a Lifetime of Care for Cooper Patients

Need a Ride? Give Zipcar a Try!

Cooper emergency room staff takes care of 76,000 patient visits each year and many of the patients who make these visits do not have primary care physicians, or insurance. Seeing the opportunity to improve the health care of the uninsured and underinsured individuals, a team of Cooper innovators developed a plan to help these patients join the ranks of insured individuals and to receive preventive and routine health care. This team of innovators including members of the Urban Health Institute, Emergency Room, and Patient Financial Services, launched the Advanced Access Initiative. Since December 2013, a daily report has been gener- ated that includes every patient who is discharged from the ED and who does not have a PCP, regardless of insurance. The report then goes to the Urban Health Institute call center team who calls to ask each patient, “Can we help you in scheduling a follow-up appointment?” “We found that most of the patients in this workflow are uninsured and Medicaid eligible,” says Evan Gaston, Program Manager, Clinical Innovation, Urban Health Institute. “Our ED is referring patients to internal medicine, turning episodic visits by patients into lifetime customers of routine care.”

Do you need an occasional ride but want the convenience that is not often available with public transportation? Here’s some exciting news. Zipcar, in partnership with Cooper University Health Care and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, has expanded its service to the Camden area and is now offering residents, employees, visitors and students, as well as guests of the Ronald McDonald House SNJ, access to cars “on-demand” by the hour or the day. Since early May, a Nissan Sentra and a VW Jetta became available, for reservation by Zipcar members, in the Camden County Improvement Authority (CCIA) garage, adjacent to Cooper University Hospital. Camden County donated the parking spaces in the CCIA parking garage as part of their Sustainable Camden County program, an initiative to reduce emis-sions and the carbon footprint in the county.

Patients without insurance are offered a “no cost” visit in the Urban Health Institute’s Cooper Advanced Care Center and are scheduled to meet with a certified financial registrar. As of December 2013 through early April of this year, 188 patient visits have occurred in the Cooper Advanced Care Center through this program.

Zipcar hourly reservations in Camden start at $9.25 per hour and $73 per day for drivers on Zipcar’s “Occasional Driving Plan.” Gas, insurance and 180 miles of driving per day are included in the cost of all reservations. More information is available at zipcar.com/camdenNJ.

Raul Munoz, MD, Attending Anesthesiologist. Through data analysis, the team found that when the first case of the day did not start on time for a variety of documented reasons, it impacted the overall scheduling and performance of the center as whole. “First Case On Time” (FCOT) was identified then as the project’s major metric. By monitoring the reasons and delays and addressing them through new policies and protocols, the team was able to achieve a significant improvement from a baseline FCOT of 17.7 percent to 62.9 percent FCOT. The team will continue to chart and monitor progress of the major metric for future improvements. The team also identified other areas or departments that may benefit from shared information on the improvements made at the Voorhees Surgical Center.

Voorhees Surgical Center – Throughput Optimization

The following is one in a series of occasional articles that highlights a project that uses Lean Six Sigma methodology to achieve operational improvements and maximum results. A project team was assembled to optimize scheduling and caseload at the Voorhees Surgical Center. Between January 1 and July 31, 2013, data showed that the center was not fully utilizing its capacity for performing same day surgeries, resulting in a financial impact of nearly $300,000 due to delays in on-time starts, cancellations and delays in scheduled surgical dates. The core team consisted of : Lisa Laphan-Morad, Project Sponsor; Mary Lou Kenney, RN, Clinical Director VSC, Process Owner; Mike Mercincavage, Director, Performance Analysis and Improvement, Black Belt; Cory Angelini, Performance Improvement Specialist, Master Black Belt; Hilary Ramos, HR Compen-sation Analyst, Green Belt; John J. Cooper employees plant blue pinwheels in recognition of National Child Abuse Month.

On April 1, Cooper staff gathered to “plant” 59 blue pinwheels on the front lawn of the hospital outside the Roberts Pavilion to kick-off the recognition of National Child Abuse Awareness Month. The pinwheels represent the approximately 59,000 households in Camden County with children under the age of 18. In addition, the exterior of Cooper University Hospital was aglow in blue lights throughout the month of April to bring further awareness. “As a pediatric emergency physi-cian, I have seen far too many cases of child abuse come through our doors,” said Kathryn M. McCans, MD, FAAP, Attending Physician in Cooper’s department of Pediatric

Emergency Medicine and expert in child abuse and neglect. “These children deserve better and it’s our job to raise awareness and get these families help before another innocent child is hurt. Speak up and tell some-

one if you suspect abuse, you could be saving someone’s life.” The blue pinwheels are the new symbol for child abuse and are an uplifting reminder of childhood and the bright futures all children deserve.
