Leave worries about engine failure to the WESMAR APU System.Easy to Engage right from the Helm

WESMAR’s Auxiliary Propulsion Units come in two sizes: the APU Model 300 and the APU Model 200. They offer an instant, reliable alternative source of power with minimal maintenance.

Powered by your vessel’s generator or stand-alone engine, the APU allows fuel efficient, continuous operation, giving the ability to bring the boat to port in the event of mechanical failure, and the ability to quietly cruise without the use of the main engine. Simplicity and practicality are the focus of this ‘get-home’ system.

The compact, rugged design of the APU ensures reliability with robust, corrosion-resistant operation. And, as with all WESMAR products, the APU is built of the most durable materials and powder coated to ensure a long life.

Complete control from the helm using state-of-the-art electronics. The WESMAR APU systems can be operated right from the bridge by simply turning the key and using the proportional joystick for forward and aft propulsion. Once the system is engaged with the key lock at the helm, it is activated and you are immediately in control and underway. No need to visit the engine room at all.

“The WESMAR APU kept us off the rocks and got us home safely in opposing wind and current.” said Captain Brian Calvert, on an around-the-world-cruise, who periodically reports his pleasure with the WESMAR products on board his Selene 48 Ocean Trawler. First he reported: When the impellor failed on the engine, the APU performed flawlessly. I ran it for two hours and maintained 4 knots. It is always a reassurance to know I have it if I need it.” Then, several months later came this report from the far end of Borneo, ‘about as remote as life on earth gets.’

APU System Design: Adapts to your Boat’s Needs

What our Customers say... “Thanks to the WESMAR APU we got home safely.”

It’s all about space: The APU can be installed upright, upside down, or sideways.

He explained he was watching the weather and trying to time his return to the then home marina so they departed at 3 a.m. Then things changed ultimately to winds from 25 to 45 knots with sheets of rain so powerful he compared it to a drive-through car wash, then back to nice swells and under 20 knots of wind. Then when rounding a point where the wind shifted again his engine stopped.

“It could not have picked a worse place as the swells now hit us on the beam sending things flying about the boat and we were being swept back onto a rocky point. I got the APU auxiliary drive running and it got us away from the rocks and held into the seas. Shortly after the engine lights came on and she fired up. I disengaged the APU and we headed off. An hour or two later the engine died again, so on goes the APU and away we go making 3 knots in opposing wind and current. This cycle repeated itself several times, shorter intervals each time, so that by the end of the 40 miles remaining we were switching back and forth regularly. We made the 16-hour trip and were extremely glad to finally tie up at the marina. This was the worst day at sea in four years but thanks to the WESMAR APU we got home safely.”✴

Our technical team specialist in China, David Yen, reported an impressive 4.5 knot speed during sea trials of the WESMAR APU system on a 60-foot Queenship Trawler.

Yen reported that using a hydraulic pump powered by a 20KW Genset, the APU achieved the boat speed of 4.5 knots. The boat, was delivered to the West Coast of the U.S. to its new owner.

“The installation was uncomplicated” said Yen, “the APU only involved an additional valve on the Central Hydraulics.” ✴
