The Conversion o f ‘Umar b in Al-Khattab (Continued…) 

One day, ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab set out from his house, and headed for the Holy

Sanc tua ry whe re he saw the Prop het [p buh] offering p raye r and ove rhea rd him rec iting

the Sûrah Al-Hâqqah (Cha pter 69 — The Rea lity) o f the Nob le Qur’ân. The Words of A llâh

appealed to him and touched the innermost cells of his heart. He felt that they derived

from unusual c om po sition, and he b eg an to q uestion his pe op le’ s allega tions as reg ards

the man-composed poetry or words of a soothsayer that they used to attach to the

Nob le Qur’ân. The Prop het [p buh] went on to recite: 

"That this is verily the wo rd of an hono ured Messeng er (i.e. Gabriel or Muham ma d [p buh]

whic h he has broug ht from Allâh). It is not the wo rd of a poe t, little is that you be lieve! Nor

is it the wo rd of a soothsay er (or a foretelle r), little is that you reme mb er! This is the

Reve lation sent do wn from the Lord o f the ‘Alamin 

(ma nkind , jinns and all tha t exists)." [Al-Qur'an 69:40-43]
