OVERVIEW

The set of samples for Case 15321 contained seven (7)soil samples which were analyzed through the ContractLaboratory Program (CLP) Routine Analytical Services.Included in the sample set was a field duplicate pair.

SUMMARY

All analytes except Sb were successfully analyzed in allsamples. Areas of concern with respect to data usabilityare listed according to the seriousness of the problem. These include:

MAJOR PROBLEM

The matrix spike recovery was extremely low (<30%) forthe Sb analyte in the samples. The quantitaton limitsand reported result may be biased extremely low and, therefore, have been qualified, "R" and "L",respectively.

MINOR ISSUES

The ICP Serial Dilution results for the K and Zn analyteswere outside of the 10% control limit. The reportedresults for these analytes in the samples are estimatedand have been qualified "J".

flR30223I

Page 3: AR3G2230 · Guidelines for Evaluating Inorganic Analyses. INFORMATION REGARDING REPORT CONTENT Table 1A is a summary of qualifiers added to the laboratory's results during evaluation

The laboratory duplicate result was outside of thecontrol limit for the Cu analyte. Therefore, the

• reported results for this analyte has been qualifiedestimated "J".

The matrix spike recoveries were low (30-75%) for the Asand Se analytes. The quantitation limits and reportedresults for these analytes in the samples may be biasedlow and, therefore, have been qualified, "UL" and "L",respectively.

The matrix spike recovery was high (>125%) for the Mnanalyte. The reported results may be biased high, andtherefore, they have been qualified, "K".

NOTES;

The laboratory duplicate results were outside of the 20% controllimit for the Cr, Fe, and Mn analytes, however, the results werenot outside of the 35% contol limit used for inorganic datavalidation. Therefore, these analytes were not qualified.

The data was reviewed in accordance with the National FunctionalGuidelines for Evaluating Inorganic Analyses.

CODES USED IN COMMENTS COLUMN

A = Due to an extremely low matrix spike recovery (% recovery isin parentheses), the quantitation limits and reportedresults may be biased extremely low.

B = Due to a low matrix spike recovery (% recovery is inparentheses), the quantitation limits and reported resultsmay be biased low.

C = The laboratory duplicate result was out-of-control (% RPD isin parentheses), the reported results are estimated.

D = Due to a high matrix spike recovery (% recovery is inparentheses), the reported results may be biased high.

E = The ICP serial dilution results were outside of the controllimit (the results are in parentheses), the reported resultsare estimated.

GLOSSARY OF DATA QUALIFIER CODES (INORGANIC)

CODES RELATED TO IDENTIFICATION(confidence concerning presence or absence of analytes):

U = Not detected. The associated number indicatesapproximate sample concentration necessary to bedetected.

(NO CODE) = Confirmed identification.

B = Not detected substantially above the levelreported in laboratory or field blanks.

R = Unreliable, result. Analyte may or may not bepresent in the sample. Supporting data necessaryto confirm result.

CODES RELATED TO QUANTITATION(can be used for both positive results and sample quantitationlimits):

J = Analyte Present. Reported value may not beaccurate or precise.

K = Analyte present. Reported value may be biasedhigh. Actual value is expected to be lower.

L = Analyte present. Reported value may be biasedlow. Actual value is expected to be higher.

[] = Analyte present. As values approach the IDL thequantitation may not be accurate.

UJ = Not detected, quantitation limit may be inaccurateor imprecise.

UL = Not detected, quantitation limit is probablyhigher.
