AUSTRALIA

The Host City

About Darwin

If there’s one single thing that really makes the Arafura Games special, it has to be the host city of Darwin.

Modern and vibrant, Darwin is Australia’s most northern capital – in fact Darwin is closer to many major Asian cities than it is to those of Australia. No wonder this tropical city enjoys a reputation for being the gateway to Asia.

Around 50 nationalities are represented amongst the population of Darwin, giving the city a distinctly multicultural feel. In fact, the array of local cultural community groups are highly supportive of the teams that attend the Arafura Games, and

Page 4: Arafura Games 2007 - Full Result

many even organise special functions and billeted accommodation.

Darwin, like the rest of the Northern Territory, is also known for its casual lifestyle and passion for sporting and outdoor recreational pursuits. In part, this is because Darwin’s population is younger than the Australian average. It’s also due to the excellent sporting facilities, bike tracks, parks and reserves – not to mention great fishing. It’s easy to get around in Darwin, with most attractions only a short drive away.

Weather

A major factor contributing to Darwin’s enviable lifestyle is the weather, which encourages outdoor activities. Darwin’s climate is governed by two seasons: the Wet Season, from October to April and the Dry Season, from May to September, marked by cool crisp nights and gloriously fine days ranging from 18 to 32°C.

What to see and do

There’s always plenty to do in Darwin. Of course there’s a packed program during the week of the Arafura Games, but it’s well worth making the time to see something of this fascinating city. Some popular options for visitors include:

• Get to know the local flora and fauna by visiting Crocodylus Park. The park boasts a spectacular array of animals including kangaroos, monkeys, lions, some of Australia’s most spectacular birds, and of course well over 100 crocodiles. Be sure to make time to see the crocodile feeding sessions.

• Shopping in Darwin is simple and accessible. • The Darwin City Mall and surrounding areas offer several

speciality shops and food courts, while the air-conditioned Casuarina Square Shopping Centre will suit all your shopping needs under the one roof. Quality souvenirs, including stunning Aboriginal art and crafts and exquisite jewellery made from local pearls are readily available.

• Enjoy the self-contained reef habitat of Indo-Pacific Marine, the lush Botanic Gardens, the wallaby haven of East Point Reserve, or hand-feeding the fish at Aquascene.

• Enjoy Darwin's beautiful harbour by hiring or chartering a boat, taking a ferry trip across the harbour to Mandorah, strolling down The Esplanade, or visiting the shops and eateries of Stokes Hill Wharf or Cullen Bay.

• See the sights - hire a bicycle and take advantage of Darwin's extensive network of bike and walking tracks.

Page 5: Arafura Games 2007 - Full Result

• Savour a taste of Darwin: the diverse people who make their home here contribute to the myriad of flavours just waiting to be enjoyed at Darwin's restaurants, cafes and markets - Mindil Beach on Thursday nights, Palmerston on Friday nights, Parap on Saturday mornings and Rapid Creek and Nightcliff on Sundays.

• Experience some history by visiting the Fannie Bay Gaol, the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre, the East Point Military Museum, Myilly Point Heritage Precinct, or taking a historical walk. The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory and Parliament House, home of the Northern Territory Library, are also worth a visit.

Outer Darwin

Darwin is also the perfect base for discovering the attractions of the Top End:

Within an hour's drive of Darwin, you can come face-to-face with some of the Territory's best known attractions on a jumping crocodile cruise at Adelaide River, or meet some of the cutest and most fascinating animals at the award-winning Territory Wildlife Park. Birdlife abounds at Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, and the modern Window on the Wetlands complex provides an excellent overview of wetlands fauna.

The Tiwi Islands (Bathurst and Melville islands, a short flight from Darwin) are home to the distinctive Tiwi batik and silk-screened fabrics. Access is only by organised tour, visitors are welcome to come and experience the strong Tiwi culture.

Swimming and picnics can be enjoyed at Berry Springs Nature Park, Howard Springs Nature Park, Lake Bennett Wilderness Resort, Lake Alexander and Manton Dam.

Within easy driving distance of Darwin is Litchfield National Park, with its stunning waterfalls, freshwater swimming pools, and the magnetic termite mounds. Further afield are Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) and Kakadu national parks – well worth a look if you can spare a day or two.

Ministers Message The Hon Kon Vatskalis MLA Minister for Sport and Recreation

As Minister for Sport and Recreation for the Northern Territory, I welcome you to join us at one of the leading sporting events on the Asia Pacific calendar – the Arafura Games.

The Arafura Games has secured its reputation as one of the world’s most unique multi-cultural sporting events, and as a breeding ground for the emerging champions of the Asia Pacific region. The Northern Territory Government is proud to play host once again to our international sporting neighbours to join in a week-long celebration of sporting competition, cultural diversity and friendship.

The Arafura Games is about more than just sporting competition; it focuses on providing a sporting experience and professional development that will benefit competitors, coaches and officials alike. During the Games, people from all over the world converge in Darwin to witness the thrill of top-class competition and to experience the cultural vitality typical of this tropical city. The Territory continues to show its support for the Arafura Games and welcomes our sporting neighbours as they make their way across the Arafura Sea.

I wish all competitors well as they tread the stepping stones toward competition at the highest level, and wish players, spectators, coaches and administrators alike a warm and friendly welcome to Darwin in May 2009.

Fundamental Principles Emerging Champions

The Arafura Games focuses on athletes who are on the way up, striving to compete at their highest level. The Games provides a key stepping stone for athletes aspiring to represent their countries at the pinnacle of their sport. Competition is offered to regional and development athletes as well as national teams to experience the thrill and excitement of a high quality international sporting event.

Sporting Neighbours

Countries of the Asia Pacific region are invited to come together to compete in a friendly sporting environment, applications from countries further afield are also welcomed. The Arafura Games provides a pathway through which friendship, goodwill and cultural understanding between competing nations can strengthen and flourish.

Sharing Knowledge

The Arafura Games not only offers an international sporting competition for developing athletes, it also offers similar benefits to coaches, administrators, officials and other support staff. Opportunities such as the International Sport Conference as well as accredited coaching and officiating courses are offered during the Games week. The Arafura Games welcomes any requests for such servicesfrom visiting countries.

History From its humble beginnings, the Arafura Games is now recognised as a leading international sporting competition for the developing athletes of the Asia Pacific region. Held every two years in Darwin, the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory, the Games is billed as a meeting of "Sporting Neighbours" and attracts competitors from all parts of Australia, nations throughout the Asia Pacific and beyond.

The Arafura Games began in 1991 as the Arafura Sports Festival with 1500 participants from seven countries competing in 13 sports. By the time the eighth Games were held in 2005, participation had soared to more than 3,000 athletes representing 32 nations, with competition in 30 sports. Over the years, tens of thousands of athletes, spectators, officials and volunteers have been involved.

Logo and Name The Arafura Games' logo, with its flag motifs, was developed to represent the coming together of competitors throughout the Asia Pacific region. The region centres on the Arafura Sea, the body of water joining Northern Australia and South East Asia.

The name of the Arafura Sea comes from the Portuguese mare aurifera, meaning ‘sea of gold’. The name dates back to 1623, when shipwrecked Portuguese were said to have seen gold-studded quartz on the coast of Arnhem Land.

The four vibrant colours used in the Arafura Games' logo combine the cool turquoise of the Arafura Sea, the glowing sun which shines above, the strong ochres of the Northern Territory’s earth and the welcoming blue of the skies.

Mascot

Rocky the rock wallaby first bounded onto the scene at the very first Arafura Sports Festival in 1991. Each year, he comes back better than ever. Rocky is not one to be camera shy. During the Arafura Games, Rocky appears all around Darwin and at all sporting venues providing plenty of opportunities for those special photographs.

Rocky is a member of the greater wallaby clan that lives across the Top End of the Northern Territory. Like their kangaroo cousins, wallabies are noted for their athletic ability and can cover ground at great speed. Visitors have the chance to meet some of Rocky's relations by visiting one of Australia's largest protected wallaby areas at East Point reserve, a tropical park land in Fannie Bay close to Darwin City Centre.
