School 2020
February has been a busy month with our I Love to Read activities, Pink Day (anti-bullying), sport and music/band activities. Please see below some photos on the I Love to Read month and our day of pink further in the newsletter.
On March 6th teachers will be working together around our School Goal - Nu-meracy. We have also been continuing with our teachings including Learning Intentions, Success Criteria and other components of the Assessment Waterfall. There is much information/research to support these structures in student learning, including writing strategies using Regie Routman. If anyone is inter-ested in knowing more, please feel free to contact the school. An informative website to access some of this information is (and there are others by John Hattie and Lyn Sharratt that are available):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGyvDvOegXE
We also have some very EXCITING news to share with our community! Mrs. McIvor’s grade 6 class from last year who won our divisional SRSD group Citizenship Award, was again nominated, and WON the provincial Manitoba School Board Association Citizenship Award. They will be receiving recognition and their one-thousand-dollar monetary award on March 12th at the MSBA Ceremony. This is the first time an SRSD group has won this Citi-zenship Award. This is a testament to how our teaching/learning has shifted to an inquiry/authentic approach – their yearlong big question was ‘How do we ensure that all children’s needs are met?”. Because it was the students who chose this overarching question, it helped them connect to their learn-ing in all curricular areas in a more meaningful and engaging way. At the same time, they fundraised to help children in their communities, including the Children’s Hospital. It was an amazing, hard-working year for them, and it showed through in their data, academically and social-emotionally as a community of learners. Congratulations to Mrs. McIvor and her students!
As we welcome March in, we are also looking forward to the warmer weather! Which bring us to formal assessment time where teachers are assessing in all areas. Teachers are also preparing the report cards, which are being sent home on March 23rd Have a happy and safe Spring Break everyone and we hope you come back re-freshed to continue with our last few months of our school year!

ALL VISITORS ARE TO REPORT TO THE MAIN OFFICE
All visitors, including parents, must report to the main office upon entering the school. We ask that parents/guardians do not go straight to
their child’s classroom. If you are dropping something off for your child, please leave it at the office and we will make sure he/she gets it. If you
are coming to pick up your child, please report to the office, and we will call your child down. You must sign your child(ren) out. If you are
coming at the end of the day, please wait for your child in the front foyer or office area.
DISMISSAL
Parents are always welcome in our school. Dismissal can be a
very busy time at the school and we encourage parents to wait
by the front entrance at dismissal time and not in the front of
the classroom doors. If you wish to see a teacher after dismis-
sal, please call, set up an appointment, or use your c hild’s
agenda.
SCHOOL CANCELLATIONS
Winter has arrived. With the winter weather comes the concerns about school closures. The responsibility and authority not to open schools
because of severe weather rests with the Superintendent. Should he issue such an order, announcements will normally be made before 7:00 a.m.
on the local radio stations (Steinbach online). Information will also be posted on the divisional website: www.srsd.mb.ca
Walking Students & Drop off Students Students should not be at the school earlier then 8:30 am.
The only exception are the students who arrive with early
busses.
All students must be picked up at 3:10 pm
We have Patrollers before school from 8:20-8:30

3/4V Learning about Sound
We are learning about sound and how it works. Did you
know that sound energy is found all around you? Computers,
stomping, animals, nature, people; all of these things make
sound. Sound is caused by vibrations, which creates sound waves
that travel to your ear. The part of your body that we call the ear is
actually called a pinna. The pinna is shaped to tunnel the sound
into your ear canal. The sound makes your ear drum vibrate,
these vibrations cause the middle ear bones to move and signal
the cochlea which is filled with nerve endings. The nerve endings
send the information to the brain which tells your brain what you
are hearing. This happens a lot quicker than it sounds.
We have taken all the information we have learned and creat-
ed an instrument of our choice. Many of us decided to make gui-
tars, others made drums (bongos), maracas, and pan flutes. The
criteria we followed was make an instrument that is nicely deco-
rated, it has to be sturdy, hand held, and made from scratch. We
wanted to have our finished product make 3 different sounds and
be able to change these sounds by creating different pitches and
loudness. We really enjoyed creating our own instruments even
though we faced challenges throughout this process.
EGG-straodinary Learning in Grade 1
The Grade 1 classes have been learning about sequencing, ordering steps and
reading recipes. Together as a class, we created a delicious breakfast of scram-
bled eggs, juice and toast. Each child had the opportunity to crack an egg, add in-
gredients and whisk the eggs. They watched intently as the eggs were cooking
and were so excited to try the final product. What an EGG-cellent learning experi-
ence for everyone!
Bus Cancellations
If the weather reaches - 45 (with wind chill) busses may be cancelled. Poor visibility or poor
road conditions may also cause busses to be cancelled.
If conditions are unsafe in any area, transportation is cancelled for the entire division.
We urge parents to check the website and listen to local radio each morning during the winter
months. While busses are usually cancelled at 6 AM they can be cancelled with little notice
due to a turn in the weather.
Students should be well dressed for the weather and prepared to wait at their bus stop in case a
bus is delayed.
Parents Get The Final Say
Our division is very spread out geographically, and weather conditions can vary from area to
area. Even if busses are running parents always have the final decision. If you will not be
sending your student on the bus due to weather conditions please contact:
Transportation Office: (204) 422-6222 / [email protected]
New Bus Status Updates
The transportation website has changed to include a list of busses and their status for
morning pick up times. Please be aware that the bus status will only be changed if the bus is
more than ten minutes late, and will only be used for morning delays.
This information should appear on the Transportation Bus Schedule and also on the school
division home page www.srsd.ca and the corresponding schools websites.
School Bus Winter Weather Safety
Notes from the Music Room — February Events Honour Band, on January 31 and February 13, was enjoyed by seven grade 8 students from Arborgate School. They joined about 75 other students from SRSD schools in two days of band workshop. Due to their excellent focusing skills, they were able to learn to play three band arrangements, which were performed on the evening of February 13. The concert also included performances from the three high schools. Special thanks to the high school teachers, Mrs. Betz, Mrs. Markusson, and Mr. Davis, for their excellent teaching and direct-ing.

7 Teachings for January
Honesty… means being truthful, genuine, sincere, trustworthy, loyal, fair, and upright. An honest person tells
the truth and does not lie, cheat, or steal. An honest person does not hide anything. An honest person is frank and straightforward. Miguel de Cervantes is often quoted as having said, “Honesty is the best policy”. This
statement explains that it is important to be truthful and to never cheat or steal. If you are honest, your charac-ter will always shine through.
Honesty is represented by the Sasquatch who walks among us quietly, teaching us to be honest with ourselves and accept other for who they are.
Here are some steps to follow to show honesty: At home, at school, or in the community, do your best to tell the truth.
Keep your promises.
Express yourself positively.
Tell the truth, regardless of the consequences.
Voice your opinion in a thoughtful manner.
Follow the rules.
Complete assigned tasks and chores.
Avoid telling lies.
7 Teachings for February
Truth …means to understand the importance of all of the other teachings and practice them. It also
means to speak the truth; don’t be dishonest or try to hide truth from others. Live the truth so others
find you trustworthy. Be true to yourself, knowing your strengths and your weaknesses.
The Turtle represents truth because it is one of the oldest animals on our planet. It is patient, careful,
slow and steady, and attentive to details. These are important characteristics
for those who tell the truth.
Here are some steps to follow to show Truthfulness: Be truthful to others. Don’t spread any rumours or lies.
Be truthful to yourself and know your limits.
Be truthful at school. Do all your own work and do not look to your friends for answers.
Do not make excuses for your mistakes or misbehaviours.
Follow the rules so that everyone gets along.
7 Teachings for March
Humility… means to accept that all people are equal; no one is better than another. Humility means
to think of others before yourself, to not be boastful, but to have a
modest sense of your own self-worth.
The wolf represents humility because it always thinks of the pack before himself and is devoted to pro-
tecting his family and working for the good of the pack.
Here are some steps to follow to show Humility: Do not brag or boast to others who are struggling when you are not.
Be humble to yourself and follow your own best judgement
Be kind to others, treating them with compassion, patience and calmness
