Marco Polo, the office cat, helps keep things purring along as we go about our daily routine at Arborist Enterprises, and we like to think he shows how we feel about our four-legged friends. In fact, he’s just the tip of the furry iceberg.

“Everyone here is an animal lover,” says Tina. Ben and Tina have a ten-year-old Bichon Frisé named Eloise, a compact canine inherited from their daughter despite a “pre-pup agreement” that exempted Ben from primary dog-walking duties.

At the opposite end of the size spectrum, John Brewer’s eight-year- old Weimaraner–at 90 pounds– is larger than the breed standard of 70-80 pounds. “He can very conveniently set his head down on a standard-height table,” says John, somewhat wistfully.

Nobody does a better job of caring for your part of the world than our landscape foreman Shawn Gross. ”Shawn always has a smile on his face,“ says Tina Tresselt, co-owner of Arborist Enterprises. ”He‘s our go-to guy for all of our mulching and planting jobs, and he does a great job!“

Shawn marked his ten-year anniversary with us in March, but when not working, he loves spending time with wife Athene, daughter Alyssa, and son Austin. In addition to being a great dad who loves going to his children‘s soccer games.

EMERALD ASH BORER cLOSES in

The harsh winter of 2013-2014 may have done a number on your shrubs. Broad-leaf evergreen shrubs such as holly and cherry laurel are susceptible to winter burn—caused when leaves are dried out by the wind while the roots are in frozen ground and unable to replenish the water. Here are some other stressors that do no favors to your shrubs:

We would be remiss if we failed to mention plants such as Southern Magnolia or Crape Myrtle that are able to survive mild winters in southeastern Pennsylvania, but not harsh ones. Occasionally our clients must hear the sad news that had they selected a hardier species, it would have survived.

Every case is different, however. If a shrub is healthy going into winter—no insects, no disease, healthy growth patterns—it has the best chance of surviving. So when we come out to assess the damage, we’ll look for signs of insects from the fall and if we see them, we’ll recommend insect control. We’ll also prune to remove dead foliage and fertilize to help the plant recover.

LAWN ROAD Recovery

We are finding out just how hard this winter was on lawns, too. Cooler temperatures have delayed germination of crabgrass and broad leaf weeds, but in many areas the grass is brown and completely dormant. We’ll respond by applying a fertilizer blended with a pre-emergent herbicide for crabgrass control. Fertilizing the grass helps to break the dormancy and get it to green up faster.

Other kinds of lawn mayhem we’re seeing include:

Snow mold, a pink or gray fungus typical of late winter after the snow melts

Damage by squirrels digging up nuts

Turf gouges by snow plows

Ruts left by cars and trucks

Tunneling by voles

Don’t miss grand opening weekend June 13-15, 11am-3pm at Longwood Gardens this summer. The spectacular new outdoor garden is expanding from 40 to 86 acres and includes three miles of walking trails, five learning pavilions, and colorful wildflower plantings.

Arborist Enterprises crews were some of the first on site to help keep the construction schedule on track. “We did a lot of selective tree removals and also a lot of tree pruning,” says Arborist Enterprises President Ben Tresselt.

Winter 2014 Storm Damage Cleanup The grounds at Longwood Gardens needed extra care this winter, and we were there. “Arborist Enterprises’ work was extremely valuable in recovering from the ice storm damage,” noted Longwood Communications Manager Patricia Evans. “The team was on the site February 5—the very afternoon the ice storm subsided, and worked with us through March 14. We appreciated their quick response and dedication to the cleanup efforts.”
