GENETICALLY MODIFIED (GM) Babies: Three-parent IVF will now be debated on the floor of the House of Commons There has been an important development concerning the three-parent embryo issue. There will be a debate in the House of Commons this Tues. 3rd Feb. You can find out more, and get in touch with your MP, www.stopgm3parentbabies.com The Government is asking Parliament to legalise the production of human beings who have had part of the ova (their mother’s eggs) from which they themselves came replaced by material taken from other ova. These reconstructed ova would then be fertilised artificially (i.e. by in vitro fertilisation - IVF - in laboratories) and inserted into their birth mother’s wombs. THESE CHILDREN WOULD

EFFECTIVELY HAVE THREE PARENTS. This would be something we have never before dared to do - or been allowed to do - to human beings. It is genetic modification (GM) - Parliament banned this in 2008. But the government is trying to pull wool over our eyed by calling it genetic ‘donation’ and not unlawful. It is claimed it will eliminate some rare but very serious diseases. If it were already lawful there would be no need to ask Parliament to approve these regulations. GM could have all sorts of serious side-effects because it is tampering with the basic constituents of human beings. It could cause new congenital abnormalities in not just the children themselves but their descendants. GM experiments using animals have had some horrifying results. Most countries are holding back. BRITAIN IS RUSHING AHEAD. It is an assault on the sanctity and dignity of human life; another example of unacceptable manipulation and trivialisation of human life. We must do all we can to stop it. This is Catholic Education Sunday We welcome with joy, the pupils and Mrs Elaine Kane, the new head teacher of St. Lucy’s Primary, who will speak to us at the end of 11am Mass. The theme for 2015 is “Proclaiming the Joy of the Gospel”. It is an opportunity for parents, teachers, schools and parishes to consider how we are all “Proclaiming the Joy of the Gospel” in words and action in our daily lives. This year there is a particular appeal to all parish communities to encourage young people to consider aspiring towards Teaching as a profession which is so important in the formation of our young people.

this very moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ.

The Church which “goes forth” is a community of missionary disciples who

take the first step, who are involved and supportive, who bear fruit and rejoice. Before all else, the Gospel

good of others. Jesus wants evangelizers who proclaim the good news not only with words but above all by a life transfigured by God’s

presence. The best incentive for sharing the

Gospel comes from contemplating it with love, lingering over its pages and

Exhortation of Pope Francis. St. Blaise was a 3rd century physician who became bishop of Sebastea. From being a healer of bodily ailments, St. Blaise became a

physician of souls, then retired for a time, by divine inspiration, to a cavern where he remained in prayer. Blaise instructed his people as much by his example as by his words, and the great virtue of the sanctity of the of the servant of God were attested by many miracles. From all parts, people flocked to him for the cure of bodily and spiritual ills. In 316, the governor of Cappadocia, Agricolaus, began a

persecution by order of the Emperor of Licinius and St. Blaise was seized. After interrogation and a severe scourging, he was taken to prison and subsequently beheaded. While being taken into custody, a distraught mother, whose child was choking on a fish bone, threw herself at his feet and implored his intercession. Touched at her grief, he offered up his prayers, and the child was cured. St. Blaise is invoked for protection against illnesses and injuries of the throat.

ORDER AND DISCIPLINE IN CHURCH

Mobile phones - would all parishioners please ensure that your phones are switched off prior to entering the Church. This is a sign of respect for God and for others during the Celebration of Mass and other services.

Toilets - Would parents/guardians please ensure that your child goes to the toilet before Mass starts, as children going during Mass can be disruptive. However, should the need arise, all children who are P1-3, MUST be accompanied by an adult for safety reasons. An electronic switch has been fitted to the lights in the Gents Toilet. There is no need to switch them off as they will automatically extinguish after 10 minutes… so be quick!!

Smoking - If you require to have a cigarette before the beginning of Mass, could you please ensure that you do so outside the hall door.

Standing having a cigarette outside the Church detracts from the dignity of God’s house. We have opened the shutters to make the entrance more attractive and more like a church than a closed down pub. Smoking outside the entrance sends the opposite message.

Shutters - During the day, the shutters are to be kept up, in order to create an appearance of welcome and openness. It also improves how the Church looks. There is someone in charge of security.
