Archbishop’s Appeal Mission and Purpose

Mission

As recipients of God’s gifts and caretakers of all that we have, are, and will be, we as a Church demonstrate our gratitude by assisting and serving others. The Archbishop’s Appeal enables donors to come together in supporting essential ministries that promote the Gospel message of love across the Archdiocese of San Antonio’s 19 counties.

Purpose

The Archbishop’s Appeal acquires the financial resources needed to support archdiocesan ministries that provide for the spiritual, educational, and material needs of individuals and families across the archdiocese. The Appeal empowers parishes to inspire communities and guide the faithful into a deeper understanding of stewardship and love. It allows us to promote the Gospel message in word and deed, serving others in prayer and through our financial gift.

2019 Appeal Steering Committee The Appeal Steering Committee is a seven-member decision-making and reporting body that reviews annual funding requests, determines appropriate use of funds, and assists in planning the upcoming Appeal. Their recommendations help the Archbishop and Presbyteral Council determine which ministries or agencies should be funded. The Appeal Steering Committee is comprised of two clergy, one of whom serves as the Chair, two Pastoral Center staff members, one Archdiocesan Finance Council member, one lay member, and Moderator of the Curia or Vicar.

Appeal Direct Mail Program

The Annual Appeal Direct Mail Program enables Archbishop Gustavo to communicate directly with parishioners throughout the archdiocese. In three mailings (January/February, April, and July/|August), the Archbishop personally invites the faithful to further Christ's mission to serve others. The Archbishop is able to contact all parishioners listed in the Archdiocese’s development database. Parishes are responsible for submitting parishioner updates monthly for those who are new, recently married, moved, or deceased. Updates should be emailed to the Development Office at [email protected]. See page 28 (Parish Roster Updates) for more details. In 2017, 69% ($3.2M) of all contributions came from direct mail, 24% ($1.1M) came from In-Pew solicitations, and the remaining 7% ($.5M) came from online, bill pay, and other donations.

1. Kick-off mail appeal (January/February)

This first invitation from His Excellency mailed to parishioners’ homes asks them to make, renew or increase their commitment to this year’s Appeal. All gifts are credited to the donor’s parish goal. Fulfillment options include making a single gift or a pledge for 10 monthly payments.

2. First Follow-up mail appeal (April)

The Archbishop follows up with those who’ve not yet responded. Donors are invited to make an eight-month pledge or a one-time gift.

3. Second/Final follow-up mail appeal (July/August)

The Archbishop appeals with one final invitation for potential donors to participate with a four-month pledge or a one-time gift.

Always encourage your community to participate using the donation form sent to their home. This expedites the fulfillment process, increases accuracy, and is most cost-effective. Encourage only those parishioners who did not receive a letter in the mail to respond using the in-pew envelope. By completing this form, they will receive letters in the future.

My Dear Brother Priests and Faithful Lay Leaders, As we begin the preparations for the 2019 Archbishop’s Appeal, I am delighted to use this occasion to express my gratitude for your extraordinary leadership. As leaders, our model should be the Good Shepherd – the One who looks for the sheep who is lost, the Shepherd who is willing to lay down His life for His flock, the Leader who shows compassion as God the Father does. As you prepare for the 2019 Archbishop’s Appeal, I ask that you reflect on its importance for each one of us. The Archbishop’s Appeal is a mission of unity, mercy, compassion, service, and evangelization. The Appeal is an ongoing ministry of our Catholic community, which enables us to be the hands and feet of Christ for His people in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. For the 2019 Archbishop’s Appeal, the Appeal Steering Committee and I have selected a theme of Encounter: Live in Faith, Give in Love. It is a theme that reminds us to be generous in our dealings with one another, to live our faith with gratitude for all that we have been given, and to serve as Missionary Disciples:

The 2019 Appeal overall goal remains at $4.5 million for the fifth consecutive year. The Appeal ministry puts our faith into action by supporting ministries that evangelize, catechize and form, reach out to youth and young adults, educate, encourage vocations to the priesthood and religious life, administer the sacraments, care for retired clergy, and aid the most vulnerable. I am deeply thankful for your willingness to share this ministry’s importance and impact with your parish community. Pastor’s Role No poster, letter, or insert can replace the impact of a pastor’s personal support. You play an essential

role in communicating to parishioners their role in serving the universal Church. As their spiritual leader,

your personal request is crucial. You are your parishioners’ principal motivator.

As a supportive pastor, you are asked to:

Consider your own commitment to the Archbishop’s Appeal, both in prayer and gift.

Convey your sincere, positive attitude about the Appeal, its mission, and how it connects to the larger

Church.

Appoint an Appeal Coordinator or form an Appeal Committee.

Work with Appeal Coordinator(s) to evaluate previous years’ results, develop a strategy to meet this

year’s goal, and educate parishioners on the Appeal’s importance

Request an Appeal Territory Coordinator to help with the parish historical analysis.

Consider linking the Appeal webpage to your parish website.

Ask for participation from all members of your parish community, whether in gift or prayer.

Use the homily during In-Pew or Follow-Up Weekends to motivate parishioners to participate.

Show the Appeal video at all Masses on In-Pew Commitment Weekend, February 16 & 17.

Ask parishioners to respond to the letter they received at home. Invite those who didn’t receive a letter to

complete the in-pew pledge card, allowing them time during Mass to do so.

Appeal Coordinator’s Role

Thank you for answering the call to serve! As coordinator , you will assist your pastor in reaching your parish goal, sharing with your parish community your faith and eagerness to build up the Kingdom of God. You will serve as a liaison among the Archbishop, the Appeal Office, Appeal ministries, your pastor, and the people of your parish. Your role is key to raising the funds needed to continue those ministries that put our faith into action by serving others. Begin by prayerfully considering your own gift to the Appeal. Your personal support is the first best step to take as you prepare to invite others to participate.

As Appeal Coordinator, you are asked to: Fall 2018:

Attend the Archbishop’s Appeal Training Workshop.

Learn more about the Archbishop’s Appeal by reading this manual and asking questions.

Recruit two or three others to help you educate parishioners about the Appeal.

December 2018:

Inform your parish office to expect a FedEx package the week of 12/10/18 containing 2019 parish materials. If you do not receive your package by 12/20/18, contact the Appeal Office at (210) 734-1604.

Confirm the Appeal materials’ arrival via email at [email protected]

January/February 2019:

Display Appeal posters in high traffic areas no later than January 1, 2019.

Assist your pastor in all areas of conducting the parish Appeal.

Invite parishioners to help meet the parish goal; strive for full participation through gift and prayer.

Coordinate the use of all Appeal materials, announcements, and prayer intentions.

Coordinate the distribution of the Appeal insert through your parish bulletin or with the help of ushers.

Remind your pastor to ask the parish community to prayerfully consider their level of support.

Throughout 2019:

Coordinate a monthly progress report to keep parishioners up-to-date on progress toward the Appeal goal.

Keep the invitation open, encouraging those who haven’t yet participated to do so.

Remind the parish office to forward in-pew pledge envelopes within one week of receipt. Envelopes should be delivered to the Chancery or mailed to P.O. Box 34150, San Antonio, Texas 78265-4150.

Complete the parish checklist and return to the Office of Archbishop’s Appeal by August 31, 2019.

Share the Appeal Impact Stories with parishioners during periodic status updates.

• Strongly encourage all parishioners and all major parish committees to make a pledge of their own .

2019 Appeal Parish Timeline

December 10, 2018

Appeal materials (posters, bulletin insert, and in-pew envelopes) are sent via FedEx to parishes, addressed to the pastor or his designated representative. Please inform your parish office to expect the package around 12/10/2018. To ensure that these impor tant resources are not stored where they may be forgotten or accidentally discarded, place them in a visible area for parish use starting January 1, 2019.

January 1, 2019

Appeal posters should be displayed in high traffic areas beginning no later than New Year’s Day and remaining in place until December 31, 2019. Archbishop sends the fir st direct mail asking par ishioners to participate in the Appeal.

February 16-17, 2019 - Appeal In-Pew Commitment Weekend

Refer to page 15 of the manual. Plan ahead to ensure that bulletin announcements and prayers of the faithful are used (page 16).

February 23-24, 2019 - Appeal Follow-up Weekend

Refer to page 18 of the manual. Ensure bulletin announcements and prayers of the faithful are used (page 19).

March–December 2019

Pray for the Appeal year-round, at least once a month. We encourage you to provide, at all Masses and in your parish bulletin, an update on progress made toward your parish goal. Strive for 100% participation from all parish households. Use Appeal funds raised Thermometer or Excel chart for % Paid and % Participation in periodic bulletin updates.

April & July/ August Follow-up mail appeal

The Archbishop sends two follow-up mailings to those who have not yet responded. Dur ing these per iods, the pastor thanks those who have contributed and announces the mailing to those who have not participated. Provide announcements encouraging prayer and gifts of any amount. Follow-up announcements are available on page 22.

September 7-8, 2019—Second Appeal In-Pew Weekend (Parishes Under goal)

Parishes below goal in pledges on August 23, 2019 are encouraged to conduct a second Appeal Weekend on September 7-8. Refer to page 23.

October 26-27, 2019 - Appeal Gratitude Weekend

Please use the pulpit message using page 24 of the manual.


The 2019 Archbishop’s Appeal begins with In-Pew Commitment Weekend. The Appeal Coordinator will stand before parishioners at all Masses to announce the start of a new Appeal, the theme, and parish goal, and how to complete an in-pew envelope. The Appeal resources (Appeal video, prayer intention, and envelope instruction guide) will guide your efforts for In-Pew Weekend.

Checklist: For the Pastor:

A motivational talk supporting the Appeal. A visible sign of the pastor’s support is critical to success. Parishioners are more likely to pledge when their pastor confidently indicates that the Appeal is worthy of generous support. When the Appeal video is shown, this can be a shorter commentary; if the video cannot be shown, this show of support should be a longer, motivational homily.

Encourage unified effort from your community. Invite everyone to pledge a gift of any amount, and encourage prayer.

Pray the Appeal prayer at the presentation’s conclusion.

For the Coordinator:

Meet well in advance with your pastor to discuss and plan for the Appeal Weekends. Provide him with copies of the Appeal Timeline, Pastor’s Role, and Pastor’s Homily.

Coordinate with the parish office to ensure that the Appeal prayer intention is included for all Masses.

Place envelopes and pencils in every pew and ensure their year-round availability.

Prepare to read the pulpit message at all Masses, including the instruction guide to completing an envelope. If you are unable to attend all Masses, recruit and instruct other parishioners to assist you during the weekend. Provide any assistants with copies of the In-Pew weekend information.

Show the 2019 Appeal video, either using the DVD provided at training or by playing it off of our website at www.archsa.org/archbishops-appeal. If your par ish is unable to show the video, the pastor should prepare a motivational homily.

After the Appeal video or homily, encourage parishioners who received the Archbishop’s letter at home to respond to that. If they did not receive a letter , encourage them to complete the Appeal in-pew envelope. Read the step-by-step instructions, guiding them to complete the pledge envelope and place it in the offertory basket. These offerings will be prayed over by the pastor and parish community. Thank parishioners for their support.

The Appeal Follow-Up serves as another invitation for families to participate

in the 2019 Appeal. By this time, parishioners should have received the Archbishop’s letter, seen the video, and heard a motivational message from the pastor.

The Appeal resources (Archbishop’s letter, bulletin insert and Appeal prayer) will guide your efforts.

Checklist:

For the Pastor:

Encourage 100% participation from your community. Invite everyone to pledge a gift of any amount.

Pray the Appeal prayer at the presentation’s conclusion.

For the Coordinator:

Coordinate with the parish office to ensure that the Appeal prayer intention is included for all Masses.

San Antonio Seminarians in the Community: Educating the Next Generation of Priests “For a priest, everything is ministry.” – Seminarian, Third Year At twenty-two, most young men in college are busy preparing for graduation and contemplating the next step in their lives. At twenty-two, this third year seminarian serves local college students as a campus minister knowing that “Any time you interact with anybody, you’re fulfilling the role of being Jesus Christ to that person.” He sees his ministry assignment as a benefit to both the college students he serves, as well as himself. Each semester, Assumption Seminary sends its students on different ministry assignments where they learn aspects of the priesthood that no amount of classroom time can teach them. Appeal donors’ generosity makes this new generation of Christ’s most devoted servants possible, providing them the financial support that makes their formation a time solely focused on prayer, learning, and service.

The Appeal Follow-up serves as another invitation for families to participate in the 2019 Appeal. By this time, parishioners should have received the Archbishop’s letter, seen the video, and heard a supportive message from the pastor. Read the Appeal follow-up pulpit message below at all Masses .

Good morning/afternoon, my name is ____________. Last week I shared with you about the Archbishop’s Appeal and the good work that we do as a community united in thanksgiving, stewardship, and an enthusiastic love of neighbor. Today, I would like to read Archbishop Gustavo’s letter to all of us. [Archbishop’s Letter — Page 20] The Appeal is not about how big or how small your individual gift is; rather, it is a communal effort reflecting our love for our God, our Holy Church, ourselves, and one another. The Appeal accomplishes what none of us could ever do alone; it is our united effort to Encounter: Live in Faith, Give in Love. 1. EDUCATION A successful parish Appeal campaign begins with Stewardship education.

Time – Our time is a gift from God. Help your parish community understand that “being on God’s time” means to spend time praying with our parish community, invite others to give of themselves in prayer and worship, share Christ’s love with family and friends, and volunteer our time in church and communal activities that serve others.

Talent – God entrusts each of us with unique skills and talents in order that we use them in the service of others: our family, parish, archdiocese, and community, carrying out Christ's mission of the Catholic Church in San Antonio. Treasure – All gifts are from God, including money and material possessions. We are responsible for sharing these blessings for the glory of God with those in need. As Christian stewards, we return in thanksgiving a proportionate gift, as the first fruits of all we have received.

2. MOTIVATION

A successful parish Appeal campaign continues with the pastor’s motivational support. The Appeal messages should be given from the heart, with the conviction and facts/examples that demonstrate how your parish and the archdiocese work TOGETHER to carry out the mission of the Church locally. Invite parishioners to participate by responding to the letter sent to their home or by filling out the pledge card. Ask for a sacrificial commitment from every household to be united with the other 167 parishes and missions dedicated to carrying out our mission as One Church. Share parish goals for finances, participation, and new donors that everyone can work on TOGETHER.

3. FEEDBACK/|TRANSPARENCY A thorough follow-up process will ensure that every household has an opportunity to give. Make an effort to reach everyone by utilizing all resources and different avenues of communication available at your parish.

Parish Detail Reports The Archdiocesan Department of Development uses Raisers Edge to track donors, generate reports, and process gifts. Pastors and coordinators may at any time request a report detailing the status of parish progress, including a list of their parishioners who have given or pledged. This parish report is confidential since it contains private donor information. The Office of Archbishop’s Appeal will email a weekly All Parish Summary Report summarizing each parish’s progress. If you have NOT been receiving this, please provide our office with pastor , coordinator , and par ish emails to ensure that key personnel remain informed.

Parish Rosters Updates It is essential that the Office of the Archbishop’s Appeal maintains an accurate database to provide correct reports and reduce mailing costs to outdated addresses. Please continue to update parishioner information and provide changes as they occur throughout the year. There is a specific procedure your parish office must follow. For more information, please contact the Office of Development at 210-734-2620 ext. 1091, or email [email protected].

Appeal Direct Mail Outs For the direct mailings, your parishioners will receive a letter with an Appeal pledge envelope from the Archbishop. It is recommended that parishioners who receive these letters respond using this pledge envelope as it expedites the payment at the bank, reduces processing costs, and ensures accuracy.

In-Pew Payments During In-Pew Commitment Weekend (February 16-17), your parish will receive envelopes with pledges and donations. Please keep Appeal envelopes in a secure location as they contain sensitive personal and payment information. Envelopes should not be opened and sent in manila envelopes addressed to: Archbishop’s Appeal, PO Box 34150 San Antonio, Texas 78265-4150. You may also hand deliver them to the Pastoral Center at 2718 W. Woodlawn San Antonio, Texas 78228.

Cash Donations Please do not send cash contributions by mail as this can result in theft and loss of funds. We recommend that you hand deliver the envelopes to the Office of Archbishop's Appeal or issue a parish check with a detailed list of donor names, mailing addresses, and their respective gift amounts. This allows our office to issue proper credit to the donor for their contribution in the form of a tax letter at the year’s end. Additionally, do not hold parishioner contributions for more than a week. This delays the payment process and will affect the timing of transactions made to the donor’s bank account.

Donor Correspondence Donors will receive a thank you acknowledgement for all donations, monthly pledge reminders, and tax statements.

A Pastor’s Homily—Sample Homily Notes for February 17, 2019

6th Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections on the Scriptures: The gospel for today is the Lucan version of the Beatitudes –four blessings and four corresponding woes. Matthew’s Jesus goes up on a mountain to proclaim the Beatitudes, like Moses proclaiming the Law to God’s people on Mt. Sinai. Luke’s Jesus delivers the blessings and woes on the plain, among the people whom he encounters each day and with whom he identifies his mission. Jesus is a true prophet who, like Jeremiah in the first reading, often encountered opposition and rejection by the world when he proclaims God’s word and acts upon it. False prophets easily find friends because their falsely optimistic statements do not challenge their listeners or call them to divine wisdom. Homiletic Thoughts: The reading from Jeremiah and the response (Psalm 1) greatly simplify human life in a fast-changing, chaotic world in which people are bombarded on all sides by calls to the “good life” through acquiring possessions, power, and pleasure. Embracing human wisdom is folly and leads to a barren life. Seeking divine wisdom and trusting in God alone leads to vitality and fruitfulness. The true meaning of life is found not in worldly success as such, but in an unshakable trust in God. The blessings and woes are neither naïve nor threatening. Jesus addresses them to his disciples. His words describe what it means to be a missionary disciple striving to further the kingdom of God. The kingdom is a place of justice and peace, mercy and compassion, harmony and unity, healing and love. In the kingdom the poor, the hungry, the weeping, and the rejected have a special place and are to be welcome and assisted by the community of faith. Those who put their trust in world riches, hoard their possessions, and neglect the poor, do not belong in the community of faith, among missionary disciples. Neither do those who ignore the hungry, or those who laugh and invest their limited resources in seeking personal pleasure, without regard for those who are mourning and in need. Those who live as authentic missionary disciples of the risen Lord Jesus may well be ridiculed by those who invest and take satisfaction in worldly wisdom, preferring false prophets. Pope Francis has called the entire Church – each of us – to be missionary disciples, living in accord with God’s word, proclaiming the gospel of mercy and love especially through our actions. After an extensive consultative and listening process in the Archdiocese, Archbishop Gustavo has set the theme of Missionary Disciples at the head of our archdiocesan priorities. Empowered by the Holy Spirit we are called to welcome and assist – and go out to encounter and invite – the poor, the hungry, the mourning, and those who are despised because of their faith and trust in the Lord. While each of us is to respond in our own unique way, as a community of faith we are also to do together what we cannot do alone. The Archbishop’s Appeal is a trustworthy way of working together to further the kingdom of God in our midst – in our Archdiocese. Annual Appeal: As you know, the name of the Annual Archbishop’s Appeal does not mean that the money goes to the Archbishop himself! He gathers the money in our name, to fund essential ministries that might not be possible within our local church without our help. The Appeal helps support our college campus ministries, our ministries to the incarcerated and imprisoned, and the formation our future priests. The Appeal also helps our Catholic Charities to reach out to the poor and the needy. These are only a few examples of why the Appeal is vital to the Archdiocese. It is an effective, proven way of living our own missionary discipleship. Some are able to give a large amount, while others can give a small gift. All gifts help and are important! All gifts reflect our response to the Lord’s call to us to be missionary disciples. God has blessed each of us in many ways. Let us respond with gratitude and generosity!

Making a Gift to the Appeal Gifts to the Appeal can be made at any time!

One-time Gift: A one-time contribution can be made at any time during the year and received as: cash, check, money order, credit card, or electronic funds transfer. Encourage parishioners to use the Appeal donation envelope they received in the Archbishop’s letter. If they did not receive the letter, it is likely due to their missing information in our database. Invite them to make a first-time gift by filling out an Appeal pledge envelope at your parish.

Pledge Commitment: The Appeal campaign runs from January 1 to December 31, allowing donors to make monthly payments on their pledge commitment. Pledges can be set up using a credit card or electronic funds transfer, either through an envelope, online (www.archsa.org/archbishops-appeal), or over the phone. Please encourage parishioners to use the Appeal donation envelope, if they received one by mail. If they did not receive a letter, they are not in the database. Encourage them to make a first-time gift by filling out a pledge envelope at your parish.

Step-by-Step instructions to filling out the in-pew envelope

Pledge envelopes should be available to parishioners year-round either in the pews or church vestibule. Consider keeping some in the parish office, as well. Parishioners should be able to place their completed envelopes in the offertory basket. Parishes are asked to send Appeal envelopes to:

Please do not keep envelopes longer than one week.

1. Open the envelope and notice the box on the left labeled “My Gift to the Appeal.” 2. To make a pledge with gift installments, fill out the first three spaces within the box. You can send

your first gift payment now, or simply complete your pledge and make your gift at a later time. The Office of Archbishop’s Appeal will send you monthly reminders. Payments can be made until December 31, 2019.

3. To the right of the box, include your preferred method of payment information. A) For credit cards, please include your desired monthly gift amount and the duration of your pledge (number of months). B) For automatic withdrawals, please include a voided check and indicate your monthly gift amount and pledge duration (number of months). C) You may also make a donation by cash or check. Please do not make pledges ending after December 31, 2019. 4. To make a one-time gift, fill in the space in the “My Gift to the Appeal” box and write “1” in the

“Months” space provided with the payment options. 5. For all gifts, please provide your name, signature, billing address, and at least one other form of

contact information, and today’s date. Please remember to write clearly!

Once complete, place it in the offertory basket, mail to the PO Box listed on the envelope, or drop it off at our parish office.


FAQs How do I benefit from the Appeal?

Four personal benefits flow from your Appeal gift:

1) Your gift helps you make the Church what God intends it to be. We are Christ’s hands, feet, and heart when we serve others and assist in the Church’s mission of salvation for all.

2) Your gift ensures that Christ’s mission continues for our children and loved ones. 3) Your gift reaches all areas of the archdiocese, supporting social services and evangelization ministries

from which you and your parish community may benefit (i.e. World Youth Day, Assembly, catechist formation, food pantry, etc.)

4) Seminarians are educated to continue shepherding our parishes and missions, providing the sacraments, and preaching the Gospel for years to come. One seminarian’s six-year formation costs about $240,000.

How is the Archbishop's Annual Appeal conducted?

Like most U.S. dioceses, the Archdiocese of San Antonio conducts an annual campaign to help fund the work of its pastoral ministries, Catholic agencies and ministries providing services and assistance to the poor and destitute, and those working to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Appeal runs on a calendar year.

Why should I give? As Christian stewards, in gratitude for our many blessings, we are responsible to lovingly share our gifts

with others as way to proclaim the Gospel message by imitating Christ’s love for all.

I already support my parish, isn’t that enough? The annual Appeal provides the opportunity to support our wider Church family, the Archdiocese of San

Antonio, as well as our own parish ministries. When we say the Creed, we reaffirm that we are members of the “one, holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.” This means that every parishioner is responsible not only for his or her own parish’s well-being, but also for that of the Church throughout the archdiocese and the world. Together, we achieve what no parish or individual donor can do alone.

How will my gift benefit parishes outside the San Antonio urban area? Archdiocesan pastoral ministries support all parishes, regardless of location. The Archbishop’s Appeal funds

the education of the seminarians who then move forward to serve all of our parishes. Catechists teaching your parish children are trained through the Lay Leadership Formation Fund. Additionally, parishes that cannot afford to purchase religious educational materials may qualify to receive additional support. Engaged couples receive marriage preparation retreats through the Office of Pastoral Ministries. The Archdiocese of San Antonio website, Catholic Television, and Today’s Catholic Newspaper are evangelization resources made available with the support given to the Archbishop’s Appeal. These are just a few of the many ways Appeal gifts benefit parishes across the archdiocese.

I’m a full-time college student. How can I help with the Appeal? Get involved in your parish or school’s campus ministry program. Give generously of your time and talent –

and consider giving up an occasional pizza or movie to help someone who is less fortunate. Your gift will make a difference! Get into the habit of giving of yourself — your talents, your time, and your treasure. One is never too young to practice being a good steward!

Why is participation in the Appeal important? The Appeal helps us, as disciples, to fortify our Catholic faith and serve neighbors in need. Giving generously demonstrates authentic stewardship and discipleship, as we act in charity for the well-being of Christ’s people. Is there a guide for how much to contribute? In prayer, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in how to best support the Appeal, spiritually and financially. Participation is more important than amount, but as a guide, one percent of the total annual household income would be appropriate. Other suggestions include $1 for each day or each week of the year ($365 or $52), or $10 a month for the 10 months of the pledge ($100). Every gift, regardless of amount, is needed to ensure that both the parish and the Archdiocese goals are met. Pastors and Appeal Coordinators are called upon to encourage your parishioners to support the Appeal in every way they can.

Hospital Ministry, Office for Pastoral Care The Archdiocese Hospital Ministry forms individuals to serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to the hospitalized. This ministry carries the presence of Christ to hospital patients and their family members. Volunteers provide regular and emergency pastoral visits to more than thirteen hospitals throughout the San Antonio area. In addition, this ministry works with three priests to provide patients with the Sacrament of Anointing.

Archdiocese Deanery Coordinators The Archdiocese Deanery Coordinators serve as liaisons between their deaneries and the archdiocesan offices. The Deanery Coordinators work with all the pastors in their assigned deanery. They assist pastors to plan realistic parish goals and programs to serve their community. Their efforts support parish staff members and lay leaders to offer programs at the deanery level. Some deanery sponsored events and activities include: Bible studies, liturgy trainings, evangelization retreats, marriage preparation classes, the annual catechist retreat, and many more.

The Adult Education Program works to find community-based solutions to end poverty. This program provides families with the necessary tools to become self-sufficient by offering English as a Second Language classes and General Educational Development courses. These services are available for individuals who live on the west side of San Antonio.

Caritas Legal Services

The Caritas Legal Aid Program serves low-income individuals needing representation in civil legal matters. Participants benefit from free walk-ins during legal clinics and Ask-A-Lawyer events. These clinics are held several times throughout the year by Catholic Charities, the Archdiocese of San Antonio, and St. Mary’s University School of Law. Catholic Counseling Services

The Catholic Counseling Service provides individual, family, and couple’s counseling to persons residing in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. This program helps individuals to break the poverty cycle by providing case management services to clients seeking to access food, rental assistance, legal assistance, and employment resources. They also offer assistance to domestic violence groups and Child Protective Service clients. Eleven parishes/ministries currently host Catholic Charities Counseling sites: San Fernando, Christ the King, St. Alphonsus, St. Jerome, St. Paul, Sts. The Financial Wellness & Care Program provides bill payer and representative payee services to low-income individuals 55 years and older. This program serves those who are unable to effectively manage their own financial affairs. Designed to prevent financial abuse, neglect and exploitation of the elderly, the Money Management Program promotes independent living for individuals on a fixed income and those who have no one to assist them with their finances.

Guadalupe Community Center - After School & Summer Youth Program

The After School and Summer Youth Program provides no-cost services to families in need. Offering services to families with children in grades K-12, the program allows parents and guardians to continue working to provide for their families, while their children receive homework/tutoring assistance, arts and crafts, community gardening and nutrition skills, and a safe, positive environment. The program functions year-round, including school holidays.

Guadalupe Community Center - Clothing Closet and Food Pantry The Clothes Closet and Food Pantry provide emergency clothing and food assistance to individuals and families suffering economic hardship. Resources are distributed at no cost and based on the family’s size and need. Beneficiaries include those looking for clothing for a job interview, a warm winter coat, or enough food to last until the next paycheck.

Guadalupe Home The Guadalupe Home is a transitional living program for homeless expectant mothers and homeless mothers with infants, providing them with a safe home environment in which to nurture their babies. The women at Guadalupe Home are ready to improve their lives and the lives of their children.

Parish Support Line The Parish Support Line is a service and resource to parishes and pastors to help the individuals and families who turn to them in desperation looking for food, clothing, counseling, and other forms of assistance. This program is a direct resource for pastors to serve their people.

Pregnancy Services The Pregnancy Service Program is dedicated to saving babies by providing supportive and educational services to women facing unplanned pregnancies. The program offers counseling prenatal education, childbirth preparation classes, labor and birth support, nurse home visits, parenting education, case management, food and utility assistance, community referrals, housing assistance, and basic needs support.

Rural Outreach

The Rural Outreach Program provides legal, counseling, parenting, and outreach programs to communities in rural areas of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP)

RSVP supports adults ages 55 and older to identify volunteer opportunities in which they can participate, as they help to strengthen our communities. Project Rachel

Project Rachel is a post-abortive healing ministry that supports anyone desiring to begin the journey of healing into the merciful heart of Jesus. Services offered include: a confidential phone line to answer questions and listen, individual counseling, and day retreats. Veterans Specific Assistance

The Veterans Assistance Program provides emergency financial assistance and case management to veterans transitioning to civilian life. It offers emergency utility and rental assistance to help veterans and their immediate families obtain self-sufficiency.

Seton Home

Seton Home’s “Living In Faith Everyday” Program promotes acceptance and positive self-development by helping women and their babies to work toward viewing themselves as worthy and unique creations of God. This program works with mothers to attend faith-based activities and a weekly youth group meeting, and encourages them to attend religious services.

St. Peter-St. Joseph Children’s Home

St. PJ’s Children’s Home provides neglected and abused children with a safe haven in which they begin to heal from the trauma of the abuse and/or neglect plaguing their young lives. “Making God Present” Seton Home

The young ladies at Seton Home have been abandoned or neglected, often cast aside because they are pregnant and their families do not want or cannot help to care for them. Many have also been abused. Father Miguel Moreno volunteered at Seton Home when he was a seminarian, working in particular with victims of human trafficking. He says many residents endured traumatic experiences at very young ages, affecting how they relate to people; some are distrustful, suspicious and closed off. During his time at Seton Home, Father Moreno continually asked himself, “How can I help them see and experience the better side of human relationships? How can I make God present to them?” Seton Home’s staff and volunteers work to provide not only professional counseling, but also an environment in which residents can begin to trust others by experiencing God’s love through them. Father Moreno found that his happiest moments at Seton came in seeing the girls begin to trust and engage with others. He saw their faith in humanity restored. He saw the downward spiral reverse, laying the foundation for healthier habits for both the young mothers and their new children. Gifts to the Archbishop’s Appeal support the staff and volunteers at Seton Home as they work to make God’s love and mercy present to these young mothers and their children. Your generosity is vital to ensuring their healing and the foundation of a healthy future.


“Let the little children come unto me” ... Textbooks for Parishes in Need

Religious education classes are a vital component of our children’s Catholic faith formation. They ensure that the Church’s youngest generations receive sound catechesis that will help them grow into faith-filled adults with a true love for God and their parish community. Unfortunately, sending their children to classes is a heavy financial burden for some families who cannot afford the cost of registration and textbooks, especially when they have more than one child to enroll. Thanks to the generosity of Appeal donors, parishes are able ease this burden for families facing financial hardship. The Archbishop’s Appeal provides parishes in need with support to purchase new textbooks, ensuring that every child in the Archdiocese of San Antonio has access to Church teachings and the opportunity to grow in the Catholic faith. Criminal Justice: New Life Ministry

The New Life Ministry, Criminal Justice Ministry, is not often talked about, but it provides an uplifting service within our community. The New Life Ministry is a caring support group for family members of incarcerated loved ones. They come together in Christian fellowship and prayer to share their unique trials and hardships. Recently, a mother said this about her experience: “I came to New Life Ministry in shame and fearful over my son, who had distanced himself from me for years prior to his incarceration. You opened me to healing. I learned how to trust in God and renewed my relationship with my son. You have provided prayerful inspiration that brings meaning to what true support is.” Through your support of the Archbishop’s Appeal, the New Life Ministry breathes new life into family relationships, bringing Christ’s love, healing, and hope.


Priestly Formation: Answering God’s Call

The Archdiocese of San Antonio is the blessed home to 19 young men discerning, studying, and training for the priesthood. They have made the courageous decision to fully dedicate their lives to God in service to His people. As our archdiocese continues to grow, so does our need for more priests who will anoint the sick, hear confessions, say Mass, and be the shepherds within our parishes. Given our great need for new priests, the Archbishop does not want cost to be an obstacle for anyone discerning the call to this vocation. Ours is one of the few dioceses that fully covers the costs of priestly formation for its diocesan seminarians. Appeal donors are cr itical to strengthening the Church’s presence and ministering to all Catholics across the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Your gift to the Appeal ensures that those in our archdiocese who hear the voice of God calling them to the priesthood can joyfully respond, “Yes!”

Growing Futures: After School and Summer Youth Program at Guadalupe Community Center

Nestled in the heart of San Antonio’s west side, the Guadalupe Community Center serves as a beacon of hope and help in a community with the lowest median income and highest illiteracy rate in Bexar County. A critical part of the Community Center’s services is the After School and Summer Youth Program, which offers tutoring, peer mentoring, positive adult role models, and a hot meal to students who may otherwise go home to an empty house at the end of the school day. “Students in grades K-12 are offered a safe location after school and during the summer months. Participants are provided transportation, a hot meal, homework assistance, tutoring, character education, an opportunity to learn about gardening, sustainability and nutrition, as well as outdoor recreation and positive interaction with peers and adults. This program is offered at no cost to families, which allows parents to work and/or continue their education with the peace of mind that their children are safe.” Gifts to the Archbishop’s Appeal offers these little ones from families in need with a safe, academically supportive and nurturing place to plant and grow their brightest future.


Catholic Television of San Antonio: Where Communications Meets Young Adult Ministry

Once a month, a group of diverse young men and women, some returning from class, others from work, come together to enjoy dinner, perhaps a drink, and an engaging address by a keynote speaker. Theology on Tap serves young adults by bringing to life the truth of Catholic teaching, covering a variety of topics relevant to their lives. Beyond learning, attendees meet and mingle with young adults from other parishes, creating a stronger community and a culture of encounter. Since July 2017, Appeal donors like you have enabled us to televise Theology on Tap, reaching thousands of viewers through Catholic Television of San Antonio (CTSA). Through this broadcast that highlights young adults, the young Church receives greater visibility within our local community. One frequent Theology on Tap attendee said, “The focus on young adults is a wise investment for the Catholic Church. This allows for an authentic welcome for these souls. We are seeking a home, seeking truth, and desiring a deep relationship with Christ! If the Church continues its investment and efforts through the Archbishop’s Appeal, then I have great hope for this community to be a dynamic center for young adults!” Through your generosity and prayers, the Archbishop’s Appeal supports ministries like Theology on Tap and CTSA, which work to help us all learn about and spread our faith, and even have a little fun, too!
