This module has been designed to provide extensive practical experience in the use of spreadsheet software in typical business and other activities. It provides the learner with an understanding of fundamental spreadsheet concepts, practical experience in spreadsheet design and implementation and an introduction to the use of macros and additional functions.

This programme module aims to provide a Learner with the personal knowledge, skills and capacity to participate in a suitable work placement under supervision for a limited time.

Group Discussion 10% Discussion groups will debate a range of topics of interest to students within the

classroom.

Interview 15% This assignment will be conducted on a one to one basis using an audio tape. Students

will be required to submit a draft CV in advance which will form the basis for the

interview

Business Documents 15% A series of sample documents will be circulated to students. Students will then be

asked to draft a number of documents before submitting a final version of each.

The documents will include a memo, a business letter, agenda, minutes etc.

Oral Presentation. 15% Each student will be given an opportunity to rehearse for this assignment before

carrying out the presentation itself during the 2nd

term. Students will be given advance

notice of the date and time of their assignment.

Written Project 15% Students will be given tuition about project writing with particular reference to the

importance of including bibliographies, title pages, paragraphing etc.

The importance of paragraphing, correct spelling and punctuation will also be

stressed.

They will also be encouraged to use a variety of visual presentations depending on the

precise nature of the project.

Technology Essay 10% A wide ranging discussion will be held in class on the radical changes that have taken

place in recent years in Communication Technology. Students will then be asked to

submit an essay outlining the impact that they believe this is having on modern

society with particular reference to the Social Media.

Use of Technology 10%

Student’s will be asked to demonstrate their ability to use a range of modern

Communication Technology including e-mail, , internet, facebook etc.

PROGRESSION External Progression CIT: There is formal agreement between CIT and this course to allow progression of suitable candidates. In 2011-12 the CCPS (Cork Colleges Progression Scheme) was totally revitalised and now St. John’s has negotiated huge opportunities for its students on both Level 5 & 6 programmes to be able to access Level 7 and Level 8 (Year 1 and 2) Degree Programmes in CIT. Full details are available from the Careers Guidance & Counselling Service (Level 3; Room 306) and on the college website www.stjohnscollege.ie Please take care to attend information sessions normally held after Christmas by the various Departments in CIT (Cork Institute of Technology). Full details of application are available on our website. Students must meet all criteria as laid down according to the negotiated link.

WORK EXPERIENCE To fulfil the Work Experience element you are required to secure two weeks work experience in an area related to the course. Further information in this regard will be given in the Work Experience class. The weeks allocated for work experience are: Monday 17th November – Friday 21rd November 2014 Monday 9th February – Friday 13th February 2015
