Architectural Master Planning with Autodesk® Architectural Desktop 2004
BD41-4
Fernando Rodrigues
This class focuses on the implementation of Autodesk® Architectural Desktop in architectural master planning. Learn how to use Architectural Desktop to generate and manage your departmental areas, schedules, mass models, and presentation drawings with one-click updates. No more obsolete data

Questions (10 minutes)
Introduction
Who am I?• I am a user
What do I do?• Design and plan healthcare facilities
Why am I here?• I want to share my experience
What is an Architectural Master Plan ?
Its an interactive & multidisciplinary design process that evaluates existing conditions and tests multiple scenarios to generate a detailed guide for design & construction of new and renovated infrastructure prior commitment of capital.
Who gets involved
• Architect• MEP & Structural Engineers• Programming Consultant• Client (Leadership Level)
Goals of a Master Plan
Align the facility development with the strategic goals of the institution or organization.
Identify the strengths and weaknesses of existing facilities (buildings) to accommodate existing and future programs.
Identify and prioritize opportunities for the most appropriate use of limited capital investment.
Master Plan Components
Organization Review• Goals, Needs and Milestone Evaluation
Facility Assessment• Quantitative Assessment• Qualitative Assessment
Concept Exploration• Space Programming• Concept Evaluation
Implementation and Financial Studies• Phasing Strategy• Cost Models
Master Plan Process
Extensive data gathering • Questionnaires• Interviews• Field observations
Exhaustive test and exploration of options• Sessions/Presentations to evaluate concepts• Continue evolution of alternatives (a lot of changes)
Deliverables will vary by firm, by project and by client• Limited only by resources and creativity• Don’t have industry standards
Not a traditional environment for CAD tools• Need of presentation materials (images)• Limited capability to store data in a DWG format
Master Plan Deliverables
Text Documents• Area reports• Condition reports• Space programs• Cost projections• Construction Schedules
Presentation Images• Assessment plans• Concept plans• Mass models• Phasing plans
Assessment Plan
Colored floor plan (Image)• Shows location & size of
existing departments color-coded by function
Process:• Background exported from
a dwg as eps• Colored in a graphics
software package or by hand
• Area values are taken from a spreadsheet
• Final product stored as pixel information (jpg,tif,..)
Qualitative Assessment Schedule
Spreadsheet output• Describes condition of each
department and buildingProcess:• Data gathered from field
observations, consultants’ reports and questionnaires is stored in a database or directly on the spreadsheet
Quantitative Assessment Schedule
Spreadsheet output• Describes the amount of
existing constructed area by building and department
Process:• Data gathered from field
observations, consultants’ reports and questionnaires is stored in a database or directly on the spreadsheet
Space Program
Spreadsheet output• Describes the amount of
new and renovated area required fulfill the needs of the facility
Process:• Data form the facility
assessment is evaluated by a programming consultant in conjunction with the needs and goals of the facility to produce a new schedule of areas
Concept Evaluation
Colored floor plan (Image)• Shows location & size of new
departments and action taken on existing areas all color-coded by function
Process:• Background exported from a
dwg as eps• Colored in a graphics software
package or by hand• Area values are taken from a
spreadsheet (space program)• Final product stored as pixel
information (jpg,tif,..)
Mass Model
Image• Tri-dimensional representation
of options and concepts showing the surrounding context of the facility
Process:• Modeled in CAD or in other
modeling tool• Low quality render• Do not show architectural
elements• Mass dimensions taken from
DWG (concept evaluation plans)
• Departments are color-coded by function like the floor plans
Cost Model
Spreadsheet output• Describes cost associate
with the different actions recommended in the master plan (renovation, new construction, demolitions)
Process:• Areas from the space
program integrated with the concepts are given construction values by different levels of impact
Phasing Plans
Colored floor plan (Image)• Shows the phasing for the
implementation of the master plan recommendation in an established time frame
Process:• Background exported from a
dwg as eps• Colored in a graphics software
package or by hand• Area values are taken from a
spreadsheet (space program)• Final product stored as pixel
information (jpg,tif,..)

What is the Problem?
We keep our data in different databases….
Cad files Images
Text files
Other Databases
Spreadsheets
Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2004
Can help us to change this....
GOALS
CONSOLIDATE as much data as possible to one databaseReduce time spent in OTHER programsAVOID data repetition in different databasesHave data ready for MIGRATION to future projectsIncrease PRODUCTIVITYNo more OBSOLETE data

Methodology
Customize ADT toolsClean BackgroundsAdd color to site plans (yes, use gradients)Trace P-lines to delineate areasGenerate SpacesInput data from questionnaires, field reports, space program, cost, etc.Use display order to properly display your space objectsUse Project Navigator to reference your files more easilySchedule your dataRender your model
Display Configurations
Set display configurations by project phase
Purpose:• Help determine the
appropriate display for each drawing during each phase of the project
• Create a configuration for pre-design display
Space Object Representation
Turn-on Space Object Volume Display
Purpose:• Obtain a tri-dimensional
representation from the departmental areas for mass model
Space Object Styles
Create new Space Styles for:• Building Gross Areas• Existing Areas• New Construction Areas• Major Renovation Areas• Minor Renovation Areas• Demolition Areas
Purpose:Track areas individually for each type of action proposed in the master plan
Property Set Definitions
Define new Property Sets for each new space style (by style), and new sets for departmental information (by object)
Purpose:Schedule areas, locations, names, cost, condition of space etc.
Classifications
Create classifications for new space object styles
Purpose:• Separate groups of spaces
for correct scheduling
Schedule Tags
Create Tag to space objects
Purpose:Display department names and
program target & actual areas on floor plans
Layers
Create layers by department function and map colors using True Color or Color Blocks
Purpose:• Provide space objects with
a color organization for presentation images
Tool palettes
Create tool palettes to add space objects
Purpose:• Expedite the Object-Layer
mapping (additional layer keys are required)
Schedule Styles
Create Schedule Styles for Building Assessment, Departmental Assessment and Proposed Areas
Purpose:• Display data of qualitative
assessment, proposed areas, cost, etc…
