The BUS SHELTER PROTOTYPE is a design-build project created by The University of Arizona fifth year architecture design studio. The project is in collaboration with the Drachman Institute, the Drachman Design Build Coalition, the Pima County Health Department and the Tucson Department of Transportation. A CPPW Grant was received in 2010 to support public health efforts that reduce obesity, increase physical activity and improve nutrition to combat chronic diseases and promote health. Recent studies have shown that use of public transit can help to increase physical activity and decrease obesity and related health concerns. It was our goal to help battle obesity through the creation of an urban environment which promotes the use of public transportation, in an extreme environment (Sonoran Desert).

Visibility Solutions:

Angle Rotation Rotation of the plan allows for a direct sight line from individuals seated on the shelter bench to the approaching bus and driver.Screen Wall Comparison of critical visibility and shading requirements results in varied fin depths on the egg crate screen.

Sunlighting Solutions:

Northern light (Favorable) No treatment requiredSouthern light (Seasonal) Horizontal plane (roof) sized to shade during Summer while permitting sunlight to enter during the Winter months to increase thermal gainEastern light (Mixed) Vertical plane to shield from moving Eastern light throughout the morningWestern light (Harsh) Vertical plane to shield from moving Western light throughout the afternoon Horizontal Screen Vertical Screen Eggcrate Screen Visibility Grid

02 DBR DESIGN BUILD RESIDENTIALTUCSON, ARIZONA SPRING 2010

This DESIGN BUILD RESIDENTIAL project provided an opportunity to contribute to a residential structure through design and construction, while gaining hands on experience.Combination Intergra Block and steel frame single family residence was designed for passive solar and electrical efficiency through material selection and design.

I participated in the second phase of construction and was responsible for flashing, bathroom design and construction, regionally responsive landscape design and the creation and installation of a rainwater harvesting system.

An investigation of STEEL STRUCTURES and response to lateral forces culminated in the construction of this 8 foot tall twisted tower. Upon completion the tower was tested on a mechanical rig which produced stress representative of wind and seismic forces.

Additional material was applied and bracing was added to the second iteration to improve structural integrity. Through the use of differing sizes we were able to express a structural hierarchy in the steel members.

04 SI SYSTEMS INTEGRATIONPERTH, AUSTRALIA FALL 2009

Creation of a four story office building with emphasis on SYSTEMS INTEGRATION and enclosure began with passive methods of environmental control through the use of a multi-material screen system. Using multiple materials with various levels of transparency allowed for customization of light and heat levels based on corresponding room functions and requirements. This group project focused on the development of a structural and enclosure system specific to Perth, Australia while including influences from Toyo Ito. Analysis of climate, surrounding built environment and culture led to the creation of a skin system that responds to site needs and aesthetics.

05 LC LYCEUM COMPETITIONPENLAND, NORTH CAROLINA SPRING 2009

Designed for the 2009 LYCEUM COMPETITION the blacksmith facility was an addition to an existing Blacksmith Studio in Penland, North Carolina. The intention behind this design was to create a marriage between structure and site, a dialog which amplifies that natural rhythm of the landscape. Pairing a curvilinear roof with towering vertical forge chimneys simulated the relationship between the meadows, rolling hills and the massive timber which lines the site’s boundary.
