GALLERY AT THE CROSSTRANSITION OF IDEAS - STUDIO 2012

Course Lecturer Catherine LassenCourse Design Studio - University of New South Wales

The focus of this course was to do an intensive study of one of Rem Koolhas’buildings. In doing so, we are able to learn more about architectural history (modern architecture) and theory (architectural ideas) and how these elements can be translated into a successful design without the final product appearing diagramic like. For my study, I have done a rigorous study on the Casa Da Musica at Porto. The concepts explored were re-interpreted, translated and transposed onto a new project with a different brief and site location.

As a result, I have designed a Gallery at Kings Cross which explores concepts such as varying layers of transparency as well as changing sensory experiences throughout a continous circulatory path.

The site is located within the heart of Kings Cross, a a socially challenging and cultrally diverse district within Sydney. The existing use of the site consists of a four storey car park with the roof being converted into an open green space for passive recreation. However given the lack of program and survalence, the site is relatively seculded and dangerous.

This urban renewal project aims to regenerate the site and provide facilities which integrates itself with the existing program instead of competing with it. To do this, a new building is introduced on the exisitng green area, however it is pushed up against the neighbouring building to maintain the outdoor recreational space. The circulatory path from the carpark to the new proposed gallery becomes an enhanced and changing experience for park/gallery visitors.

Transparency Interpretation from Casa Da MusicaThe lowest level is the carpark, hidden and opaque. The middle level is semi-transparent. The musicians being able to see the visitors, but the visitors are unable to see the musicians. The programs above are transparent to the public in terms of access routes and visual visibility from the street.

Transparency Translation for the GalleryThere are three levels of transparency. The room at the core is most grand, the final destination and hence is not transparent. The middle layer is semi transparent where there may be some interactions between the public and private. The outer layer is transparent, revealed.

07

Circulation Interpretation from Casa Da MusicaThe circulation of the existing program appears as individual rooms. The large glazing with the city as backdrop makes the experience within the programs as floating boxes where each one possesses it’s own character and identity. The general progression is towards an upwards motion.

Circulation Translation for the GalleryThe circulation of the Casa Da Musica is not defined as a single path. The proposal is to have a dual set of circulation path, one for the paying customers and the other for non-paying customers. The areas of intersections also provide opportunities for the semi-transparent zoning.

P A R R A M A T T AT H E A T R E C O M P L E XURBAN ACUPUNCTURE - STUDIO 2012

Course Lecturer KEN BAIRDCourse Design Studio 01 - University of New South Wales

Parramatta Theatre Complex was a studio which focused on establishing a relationship between a public place and the urban environment. At the moment, there are opportunities for extraordinary growth on both sides Parramatta River, the older CBD end and the newer Residential Zone.

However, mono-functional zones have prevented this opportunity. A grided lane system approach aimed at making a dynamic, public oriented city is developed as a solution to activate the river edge and connect North Parramatta and the CBD.

DESIGN STUDIO 01 SITE ANALYSIS | 2011PARRAMATTA THEATRE COMPLEX

12

The site is subjected to flooding due to an increase in hard surfaces and a loss in green areas. Hence an open park amphitheatre is proposed to counteract any potential natural disasters.

The older green spaces are defined whereas the residential green areas are undefined like perennial spaces. The proposal should allow encompass spaces that can be discovered.

The Road Hierarchy suggests that the older part of Parramattta is more dynamic whereas the newer residenital part follows a rigid grid structure. Hence the circulation proposed through the site should reflect both of these circumstances.

SITE ANALYSIS

The use of a combination of ramps to address all edges. Allowing the site to flood during raining seasons to alleviate the of flash flooding by 80% and provide visitors changing experiences.

Multi-directional access from the site into the building to draw in visitors from all directions.

The hierarchy of volumes is determined by the theatres. The more used and important programs are located close to the water. This makes the visitors walk through the site to reach their desired spaces, simultaneously experiencing the building.

MILL OWNERS ASSOCIATIONLE CORBUSIER COURSE - ELECTIVE

Course Lecturer Wendy LewinCourse Student Exchange Le Corb - University of Sydney

The Mill Owners’ Association building captures much of Le Corbusier’s discoveries in India. In particular, the brises-soleils re-appears and have been angled to capture prevailing breezes. Furthermore, it enables Le Corbusier to blur the boundary between the internal and external environment as well as light and shade.

The experience of this building begins with a long ramp to produce a grand entrance into the cubic box.

Once inside, Le Corbusier has exposed the structure. His use of columns as the main structural system further allows him to achieve free planning. There is an architectural dialect of curvilinear forms versus orthogonal forms as wells as single story volumes versus double story volumes. The result is a diverse sequence of sensory experience.
