Program

For my program, I wanted to create an exhibition area that individuals could visit at any time during the day. This would allow individuals to physically see and experience the principles of the “new architecture.” I also set aside time for speakers to talk about issues that I felt were relevant when creating a “new architecture.” I also set aside time for breaks and discussions so that the information is not too overwhelming. While I do like the amount of information I was able to include in one day and I do like the specific topics that I decided to cover, I feel that many of the topics could have been discussed in ways more creative than simply listening to a speaker.

1” AND 2” MODELS!

! I created a one inch model (upper row), using a curvilinear plane that is pierced by several black and grey triangles. While I do like the sense of conflict that I was able to achieve in this model and the amount of complexity I was able to achieve in such a small space, I feel that the idea could have been expanded using another material. The two inch model (bottom row) used a second curvilinear plane, with the same triangles piercing through it. I created both models attempting to make the viewer feel a sense of conflict because I believe that university graduate school programs should be more specialized so that they conflict with one another. While I feel that this concept was successfully illustrated, I think that this concept could have been better illustrated mixing two very different materials.

My first iteration (top row) to the four inch model only had one curvilinear plane with several triangles piercing through it. This model lacked complexity and was actually a less complicated design than my two inch model. The next iteration of the four inch model fixed this problem and added a third planar element to the space. While this model is much better than the first iteration, it does not increase in complexity enough still. This series of models could have used the inclusion of a second material in order to truly further develop in complexity.

4” MODELS

The black and white four inch model was created in order to convey a sense of conflict. This relates to my idea discussed in the program for the architectural summit, which seeks to create more specialized architecture programs. This way, the programs in different universities conflict with one another so that debate between different perspectives becomes something that it more common in the field. While this model does successfully create a crumpling effect on the viewer, it lacks complexity because only one material was used. Also, the model looks incomplete because of issues with craft. The red model adds a second material to help create this “crumpling” effect. This inclusion of another material was successful. However, the model is becoming a bit too chaotic and parts seem to be added without consideration for the overall aesthetic of the model. In order to more effectively convey a sense of conflict, some of the formal elements need to approach a common direction, while others seek to disrupt this development.

4” MODELS

This model creates layers of curvilinear planes with holes cut into them that create a sense of perspective when the viewer looks through the piece. This model is meant to comment on the fact that I believe that university architecture programs should be more specialized. Just as the university programs will become more specialized, so does the viewers line of sight when he or she looks into the piece. In this model, the mix of materials is very successful as well as its combination of static planer elements with dynamic linear ones. However, the shape of the model is a bit too resolved and is not really an open and

expandable concept The drawing of this model is effective in that it conveys a sense of the models form without using much much detail. However, the drawings look a bit flat because the thickness of the paper was not drawn using two lines placed closely together. Also, the layout of the poster is a bit awkward and could have been constructed with more of a direction in mind.

THE JOURNEY

The journeys that I designed included both a solitary journey and a journey revolving around the communication between two individuals. In the solitary journey, everyone would be be isolated and forced to hike by themselves. On the way back, everyone would kayak in one group, but each boat would be made for one person so the experience of the journey is still meant for the individual.

The other journey that I designed split people into groups of two where they would be forced to hike directly down the ravine. While I do feel that the concepts discussed on posters were successful, the presentation was not visual enough. My posters relied too much on text and did not include enough sketches, diagrams, or pictures of similar design concepts.

SITE MODEL

The site model used a combination of curved pieces of wood and nylon to create lines throughout the space. This model was created in order to show a full-utilization of the space given. It was also created in order to complement the surrounding natural environment. The model has organic, naturalistic shapes and translucent materials that would encourage the viewer standing within the space to look upwards at the sky and the nature around him or her. I feel that the combination of materials used in this model was very successful. I also think it was successful that it was constructed without using any glue. However, I feel that craft and neatness in the models construction could have been improved. I also feel that the curved wooden pieces could have been something a bit more complex.

SITE MODEL #2

In order to iterate off of my first site model, I cut holes into the facades of the curved pieces of wood. While I feel that this did increase the complexity of the curved pieces, it was not enough of a leap. I should have done things that effect the overall form and structure of the model so that it is a true iteration that seeks to create complexity.
