CHARISA CHAN YAN YANMaster of Architecture and Bachelor of Architectural Design graduate

Originally from Hong Kong, I was thrilled to study architecture at The University of Queensland. The cultural diversity at the school makes it unique. What was most exciting for me is that at UQ students can choose to study the subjects that they are interested in,

allowing for specialisation. I chose to tailor my education to prepare me for my future career.

I have always been fascinated with the global city of Singapore, especially the innovative architectural design and sustainable practices. Now, I have moved to Singapore, a city that has emerged as a model of green building in Asia, and am working in RSP Architects Planners & Engineers.

YOUR CREATiVE AND PRACTiCAL EDUCATiONUQ Architecture emphasises the importance of practical skills so that you can communicate and refine your ideas through drawings, models, prototypes and structures.

We learn to create new spaces best through testing ideas three-dimensionally, that means making and building. Working physically in the studio with paper, card, modelling clay and foam gives you the confidence to experiment with architectural form. Our teaching model is founded on hands-on construction at multiple scales, leading to more complex materials and forms. Our curriculum features opportunities to make models using laser cutters and 3D printers, to construct furniture and prototypes, and even to work on small buildings using our well-resourced workshop facilities. Your teachers have experience in using the latest digital technologies of fabrication, as well as in traditional construction methods. You’ll also learn to use drawings, animations and virtual reality simulation, to communicate and explore architectural solutions. Our students excel in architectural design and communication, regularly winning prizes and receiving invitations to exhibit their work.

Sulcus Loci installationSulcus Loci was an immersive interactive installation designed and built by students from the faculty’s Interaction Design and Master of Architecture courses in collaboration with sculptor Svenja Kratz and composer Eve Klein. It was built in our CoLab for an exhibition at the State Library of Queensland.

Students worked with architect Kim Baber in a research studio studying ‘Optimised Geometries’. Students undertook a series of hands-on studies with soap bubbles, t-shirt fabric and plaster models, followed by detailed exploration using digital modelling software.

Sulcus Loci showcases the impressive image library generated by researchers of Queensland Brain Institute’s Microscopy Unit. The final form was a response to naturally occurring patterns and ordering systems like those within the human body.

End of Year Exhibition

Each year, Master of Architecture students undertake courses, often led by senior architects, where they are tasked with designing solutions to real-world problems. Learning from industry professionals ensures UQ Architecture students are work-ready and graduate with valuable connections. In 2016, a group of Master’s students studied under two of Brisbane’s leading architects, Michael Rayner and Paul Focic, to design a future bridge linking UQ’s St Lucia campus to West End.

“The masterclass involved balancing challenging real-life problems in connecting the University campus across the Brisbane River,” Mr Rayner said. “But the project also entailed broad-based thinking about how universities interact with their cities, and how ‘knowledge cities’ of the future might evolve.” For the students, it was an opportunity to create a response to a current vision for a more connected city that is shaped by their own time, place and culture.

“Being able to work on a project that tackled existing issues provided me with a deeper view and understanding of how things work and interrelate with architecture,” Master of Architecture student Rachel Wong, who participated in the masterclass, said. “Although the design brief was challenging, it was one of the semesters where I gained the most and felt truly inspired by architecture.”

In the last four years, our students have enjoyed study tours to Hong Kong, the US, Japan, India, Myanmar, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. UQ Architecture has won generous funding from the federal government for its international travel program that has supported most students.

We believe that travelling prepares our graduates for international careers as architects. Students who study abroad are likely to be more resourceful, willing to take chances and immerse themselves in unfamiliar situations and have cross-cultural understanding and curiosity.

The UQ Abroad program offers you the exciting experience of studying overseas for up to one year on exchange while gaining credit toward your degree. Overseas study can be undertaken in either the Bachelor of Architectural Design or the Master of Architecture. The University has exchange agreements with over 200 universities in 41 countries, including the US, the UK, France, Germany, and Italy.

Why go overseas? Some benefits of having an overseas study or work experience include:• broaden the scope of your degree• gain a different perspective on your

field of study• discover new career opportunities• improve your foreign language skills• experience a different culture first-

hand• increase your understanding of the

world and gain a global outlook – a quality highly regarded by employers

• make lifelong friends from different parts of the world

Travel is an essential part of an architectural education. Unfamiliar places inspire creative ideas. Travel gives you the chance to experience architecture from different places and times and provides perspective and understanding of diverse cultures.

STORIES FROM PENANG

Students in front of the Ke-Lan Tan House, a converted shophouse in Penang.

Amid the heat and humidity, armed with cameras and field journals, 18 third-year Bachelor of Architectural Design students embarked on a 10-day study program to the UNESCO World Heritage historic city of George Town, the capital of the Malaysian state of Penang.

The federal government’s New Colombo Plan Mobility Program funded the students on the trip in April 2016, with the aim of increasing knowledge of the Indo-Pacific in Australia.

George Town provided an opportunity to experience a multicultural society within a

well-preserved South-East Asian colonial heritage site of significant civic, religious and shop-house buildings that date from British settlement at the end of the 18th century.

Led by Leonie Matthews, the group was supported by local architects and heritage practitioners, with many making time to meet and discuss their understanding of George Town. On returning to Australia, students exhibited their documentation of the site and their proposals for sustaining the life of George Town.

Hong Kong Express

During a 10-day travel studio to the Pearl River Delta region, Master of Architecture students visited the fast-growing cities of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Macau. There they learned about Asian solutions to urban density, global mobility, and temporary dwelling.

The federal government’s Endeavour Program funded 16 students on the tour to foster relationships and connections with South-East Asia, one of the most dynamic and thriving regions on the planet.

In Hong Kong, students experienced living in one of the most congested hub cities in the Asia Pacific region, a major gateway to mainland China. Hong Kong has one of the busiest international airports in the world and the field trip focused on the transient movement of people who occupy the city from a few hours to a few days, weeks or months. Students compared Hong Kong with two other highly-characterised urban realities: Shenzhen, a growing financial centre in the region, and Macau, the ‘Las Vegas of China’.

One of eleven design studios within the School’s Master of Architecture degree, the Utopian Urbanism course was coordinated by Dr Silvia Micheli and Jonathan Kopinski, with the assistance of architect I-Wen Kuo. The field trip featured design workshops in the internationally renowned OMA Hong Kong office and guest lectures from academics at the University of Hong Kong.

On returning to Australia, students developed a suite of architectural projects for the region’s increasingly transient population.

Old buildings and structures lead precarious lives, they are vulnerable to dilapidation, development and natural disaster. Now, the latest technological developments, such as laser scanners, robots and drones, are being used to create detailed digital models of endangered buildings, preserving a record of them. Dr Kelly Greenop and Dr Chris Landorf from UQ’s School of Architecture are working with researchers and students to model some of Brisbane and South-East Queensland’s historically significant buildings. Researchers at the CSIRO were developing the Zebedee hand-held 3D laser scanner for the creation of location maps to help robots and driverless cars navigate, but Dr Greenop immediately saw the application for architecture. “I thought that’d be fantastic for architects because buildings are really hard to measure,” she said. Dr Greenop said architecture students had played a key role in the projects, helping with the scanning, creating 3D models, and developing other forms of digital heritage such as films.

Dr Greenop and her colleagues are also working to get their digital models uploaded to CyArk, a website designed to digitally preserve at-risk heritage sites in perpetuity, updating file types as technology changes.

Contribute to our built environment with a deep understanding of architectural design and communication, history, society and technology.

What is Architectural Design? Conceiving new buildings requires that you learn to think spatially and communicate convincingly through drawings and models. Through design, you will test your imagination and propose environments for living, working and playing. Architectural design requires a synthesis of ideas that respond to client and community needs and an inherent concern for the quality of living and working environments.

Integrated sustainability and technology The natural and urban environment will also directly impact on your designs. Your education in sustainable systems, materials, and strategies is integrated into your technology subjects, where you will also learn about structural systems, construction methods as well as visiting architectural building sites during construction.

Practical experienceThe design courses form the main area of study in the Bachelor of Architectural Design. In these courses, projects are developed in a studio setting through the application and integration of the knowledge and skills acquired from supporting courses. In addition to design, key areas of the program include environmental design, architectural technology, history and theory, communication, and digital design.

Most of all the degree gives you the research skills necessary to understand the complex situations that you will face as an architect in a dynamic world.

Design StudiosThe Master of Architecture program at UQ invites you to undertake four, from a choice of 11, design studios over the course of your two-year degree. You can steer your career towards commercial, civic, or residential design; you can focus on landscape and urban scales; or develop additional expertise in architectural engineering, conservation, or digital manufacturing. The work that comes out of each studio is highly varied and reflects the individual interests of our students. Our teaching staff support your exploration and independent learning, and encourage your curiosity and creativity.

Research ElectivesAlongside design studios, technology, and professional practice courses, Master of Architecture students undertake Research Electives, offered in small groups. These focus on the current research undertaken in the school. These courses develop your ability to evaluate and respond to complex and difficult scenarios in a specialised area. Offerings in the research elective change each year to take advantage of partnerships with the profession and research opportunities. Students make their course selection at the beginning of each semester.

Design ResearchGraduating Master of Architecture students can enrol in the Design Research course in their final semester. Students research architectural, art and museological techniques and technologies of visual communication, display and exhibition. Working with artists and architects, students apply their research to conceiving and making an exhibition standard presentation of an aspect of a past studio project in a media of their choice. Past projects include films, animations, installations, models and one-to-one fabrication of details of larger projects.

Prepare for your career as an architect, tailor your education to your passions and develop the research skills necessary to understand the complex situations that you will face as an architect.

MASTER OF ARCHiTECTURE DESiGN STUDiOS

Architecture and Commerce Explore architecture’s role in commercial development and global consumer culture. Learn to work with the quantitative language of financial speculation and, in parallel, the terms through which architecture’s relationship to commerce has been theoretically considered, from the populism of ‘Learning from Las Vegas’ (1972) to corporate branding and ‘starchitecture’. Design proposals are expected to critically balance the expectations of commercial development against broader societal needs for sustainable and accessible cities. Designing with the material technologies of commercial developments is an integral part of this course.

Adaptive CapacitiesOperate on, in or alongside existing built fabric, analysing its heritage and material qualities, and formulating architectural proposals for its re-use, adaptation or conservation. The historical legacy of places is considered broadly, embracing the modern and industrial, cultural heritage and memorialisation, as well as designated heritage sites. The design process takes in past and present uses of the site, as well as regulatory parameters, conservation policies and methodologies, stakeholders and economic viability. An expanded range of technologies, such as digital scanning, is used in the documentation of the site and the communication of proposed interventions.

Institutions and IdeologyNegotiate the ideological underpinning of existing and future institutions in the design of buildings and precincts for governance, justice, diplomacy, education or culture. Learn the dynamic and contested nature of exterior and interior public space and be challenged to develop compelling architectural expression for organisations that play a significant role in public life. Design proposals engage with the political structures and processes that drive regional infrastructure and the regulatory context for building. Designing with the complex briefing and planning requirements for institutional and public buildings is essential to this course.

Dwelling and DensityPursue diverse solutions to the challenge of accommodating rapidly growing, urban populations in Australia and Asia. Based in research and fieldwork into formal and informal housing in cities, issues such as density and amenity, privacy and community, climate and cultural appropriateness, affordability, disability, ageing, and changing household demographics are considered in the design of innovative housing. The relationship between individual housing projects and their effects at the urban scale in increasing or decreasing segregation, gentrification and suburban sprawl are explored. The design of individual dwellings as well as the design of common spaces is expected.

Landscapes and Architecture Design fixed or mobile architectures that sustain or shape familiar or unfamiliar landscapes. The idealisation of wilderness, agrarian and (post) industrial landscapes through historical concepts such as the picturesque, as well as contemporary ideas about nature as a casualty of human activity, are the conceptual backdrop for revisiting the relationship between buildings and their environments. Design research in this course includes extensive fieldwork, documentation of natural processes and systems, and reference to other genres in which landscapes and nature are portrayed. You will explore active and temporal relationships between architecture and its environment.

Masterclass Engage critically and intensively with the distinctive formal commitments, theoretical position and modus operandi of a leading practitioner or practice. Their example is used as a springboard for advancing new directions in which you can formulate and demonstrate a related but independent position responsive to your own time, place and culture. Studio activities are typically conducted in an intensive mode to enable significant national and international guests to lead the studio.

Utopian UrbanismAnticipate future scenarios for the city and develop architectural responses to forecast global challenges, such as climate change, population increase and diminishing resources. The impetus for positing alternatives to the present is treated seriously through critical review of the history of utopian proposals in architecture and urban design. This research grounds the formulation of future scenarios and is the basis for the design of alternative visions for cities. The course emphasises the agency of architecture in effecting change. Studio activities may include field trips to cities in Australia and abroad.

Material Experiments Experiment with emerging and known materials and fabrication technologies to address challenging conditions and programs. Prototyping, 1:1 resolution, digital fabrication and robotic assembly, prefabrication and lightweight structures are topics addressed in these studios. A focus on innovation at the level of the construction detail is a key driver for design speculation, approaching buildings as the aggregation of numerous decisions about material and assembly. Studio activities are primarily undertaken through detailed material modelling and prototyping, along with computational analysis, and drawing and intensive workshop components.

Winter Sleepout Every year the school’s students, teams from local architectural practices, alumni and staff ‘sleepout’ to raise money to combat homelessness. Since its inception, the school has raised almost $50,000 through the sleepout. UQ Architecture lecturer Michael Dickson said that both the charity, Second Chance Programme and students benefit from this event. “We teach students about homelessness in academic subjects, but giving them the opportunity to hear from Second Chance about the very real difficulties that their clients face and how they can make a difference in their lives is important too. We want our students to go out and become practitioners who make a difference.”

Social Outreach StudioIn the Social Outreach Studio, students work with communities on design challenges to deliver real benefits for people facing social or economic disadvantage. You will have the opportunity to work in remote and regional areas with organisations and communities that the school has strong existing partnerships with. As a student architect, this will help you learn to meet different project challenges and understand the specific cultural needs of your clients. When students participate in the Social Outreach Studio design course, there is funding to help with the cost of materials, travel, and accommodation.

SOCiAL COMMiTMENTAt UQ Architecture, you will learn to design with an awareness of people’s needs, with a respect for the past and a vision for the future.

The built environment influences our everyday lives, including how we interact with others, and how healthy and happy our lives are. Led by research into the ways in which architecture can build communities and utilise sustainable strategies, you will learn how to be an agent of change. Through collaboration with industry colleagues, you will investigate solutions to social problems and ways in which architectural design can effect social change. You will also meet real clients and visit built exemplars.

Fees and costsCourse fees and student contributions

When you study at university, at the start of each semester or teaching period you are charged a fee for each course you enrol in.

Most undergraduate places at UQ are Commonwealth supported, i.e. funded partly by the Australian government (Commonwealth support) and partly by you (student contribution).

You qualify for Commonwealth support if you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or an Australian permanent resident and have a Commonwealth-supported place (CSP). International students pay full tuition fees.

If you have a CSP, the amount you pay for a course (your student contribution amount) depends on the fee band level of the course (see table below).

It is not possible to publish a fixed fee for a program, because fees are charged according to the courses you choose, not the program you are enrolled in, and most students can choose different electives during their program.

Indicative annual fees (based on average first-year enrolment patterns) are listed on our Future Students website to help you plan your budget.

Future StudentsW:future-students.uq.edu.au/study/find-a-program

Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF)

In 2011, the Australian Parliament passed legislation allowing universities to charge a fee for non-academic services such as sporting and recreation activities, employment and career advice, child care, financial advice, and food services. UQ levies the SSAF – which is capped at a maximum of $294 for 2017 – according to whether you are an internal or external student, full-time or part-time. The fee is indexed annually.

I chose to study at UQ as it was the highest-ranked university in my area. My undergraduate

experience at the School of Architecture provided me a broad design-focused and hands-on skill set. The best part of university for me, however, was not the set of skills I graduated with at the end, but the many lifelong friendships I made along the way. These friendships will undoubtedly form important business partnerships later in my career.

At UQ I had some incredible experiences, including participating in a student exchange to the Technical University of Munich. My exchange to Germany was by far the most challenging and enriching experience I had at UQ. I was also chosen to participate in the 2016 G200 Youth Forum held in Garmish Partenkirchen; my role at the forum was ‘Minister for Environment’ in Committee III ‘From Consumer-based Society towards Value-based Society’.

Over the course of my undergraduate degree, I received a Student Exchange Scholarship, a UQ Advantage Scholarship, was named as a Birrell Scholar, and received the Dean’s Commendation for Academic Excellence nearly every semester of my degree.

My UQ qualification, high overall GPA, as well as the professional mentors that I gained while studying, helped me to secure my first graduate position at a prestigious architecture firm, m3architecture. Securing this position has enabled me to apply the many skills I have learnt at UQ to real-world situations.

PrerequisitesSubject prerequisites are the Queensland Year 12 subjects (or interstate/overseas/tertiary/bridging course equivalents) required for individual programs.

Some programs have additional prerequisites (e.g. auditions or the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT)).

Entry scoresEntry scores include Overall Positions (OP) and entry ranks. Eligible applicants are selected for admission to a program in order of merit: those with the highest entry score are selected first, and so on until the program quota is filled.

The minimum OP or rank required for entry varies from year to year and is determined once applications have been processed and places allocated. While it is difficult to predict exactly what OP or rank will be needed for entry to a program, you can use the previous year’s cut-offs as a guide.

Special entry programsIf you identify on your QTAC application as being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent you will be invited to apply via the ATSIS alternative entry scheme for a place at UQ. This option takes into account more than just your OP score: it also considers your work history, personal references and life experience.

If you have experienced financial hardship or other difficult circumstances that have negatively impacted your studies, you may be eligible for special entry to UQ. Contact UQ Admissions for more information.

UQ’s Bonus Rank Scheme gives current Year 12 high school students bonus points towards their entry score for completing certain approved subjects or courses. Contact UQ Admissions for more information.

English language requirements If you are from a non-English speaking background, you will need to provide evidence of English proficiency. You can do this by passing Queensland Year 12 English (or interstate/international equivalent), or by other means. Visit bit.ly/UQ-eng-prof for more information..

Programs for high school studentsUQ’s Enhanced Studies Program (ESP) lets you complete a university course at either the St Lucia or Gatton campus during Semester 1 of Year 12. The program is offered free of charge, boosts your tertiary ranking by one point, and you may even receive credit for the course you completed if you subsequently go on to study at UQ: see uq.edu.au/esp

The Young Scholars Program is another chance to discover, learn and engage with UQ’s academic community and like-minded students from across Queensland. See uq.edu.au/youngscholars

Other opportunities include the Institute of Modern Languages (IML) summer intensive sessions: see iml.uq.edu.au/highschool.html and a range of faculty workshops and seminars: see uq.edu.au/schools/activities-for-schools

Alternative entryIf you did not complete Year 12, did not achieve a high enough entry score for your preferred program, or are a mature-aged applicant, there are alternative entry pathways to UQ. Contact UQ Admissions for advice.

Improving an entry score (upgrading)If you are not offered a place in your preferred program and want to improve your entry score or meet subject prerequisites, you can accept an offer in a less competitive program with fewer prerequisites and try to improve your entry score. This is called upgrading.

We recommend you complete one full year of bachelor degree study to upgrade to higher demand programs because the entry ranks allocated to study totalling less than one full-time year are capped. Depending on your academic performance your new entry rank could be higher than your previous rank.

For more information on how to improve your entry score, contact UQ Admissions.
